Yoruba filmmaker, Olajide Kazeem, aka, Seun Egbegbe, has spent 30 months in prison custody due to his failure to to meet his bail conditions.

The erstwhile Lagos socialist, known for his lavish lifestyle, has been incarcerated since February 10, 2017.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Rotimi Oladokun, confirmed this during an interview with newsmen on Tuesday.

“It is not our fault. The N5 million bail bond is yet to be paid neither have any sureties come forward,” Mr Oladokun said.

”So this means that anytime his trial comes up, we will take him to the court from the correctional facility. The only difference is that he would have been reporting to court from his home if he had met his bail conditions. So for now, Egbegbe remains in our custody pending fulfilment of bail conditions.”

A Federal High Court in Lagos granted Mr Egbegbe a bail of N5 million with two sureties each in a sum of N2.5 million on February 24, 2017.

Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo of the Federal High Court ruled that the filmmaker be granted bail once he meets his bail requirements.

“One of the sureties must be a civil servant who has attained level 16 while the other surety must be a land owner in any part of Lagos metropolis.

”The landowner must submit a Certificate of Ownership of the landed property and while the civil servant must submit his international passport to the court.

“The sureties must swear to an affidavit while the house and office addresses and telephone number will be verified by the court,” the judge ruled then.

Egbegbe, 43, a controversial figure in Yoruba movie industry, was arraigned by the police for alleged fraud involving N39 million; $90,000 and £12,550.

The police alleged that he fraudulently obtained the money from no fewer than 40 Bureau De Change operators in Lagos over a period of two years – 2015 to 2017.

Mr Egbegbe, who once managed Fuji artiste, Wale Ayinde Tekoma, was said to have allegedly swindled the BDC operators.

He was accused of falsely telling them he had naira to change into foreign currencies and vice versa.

On March 10, 2017, over 30 BDC operators stormed the court for the trial.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, The film-maker alongside his alleged accomplice, Oyekan Ayomide, was arraigned before Justice Oguntoyinbo for 36 counts bordering on advance fee fraud.

The charge sheet was subsequently amended twice, with the counts eventually increased to 40.

Mr Egbegbe’s trial was sometimes slowed down due to the inability of the investigating police officers, who were listed as witnesses, to attend the court proceedings.

His case was again stalled on November 7, 2017, after a judge fined a police prosecutor, Innocent Anyigor, N50,000.

The fine was imposed on him during the previous proceedings after the defence counsel raised an objection as to the competence of a police officer, Godwin Omaka, to testify in the case.

During his heydays, the film-maker financed the production of several Yoruba films under his Ebony Films Productions imprint.

He produced more than 20 movies including ’Ebony Alhaji’, ’Igbayilola’, ’Tani Kabe?’, ’Kura’, ’Ile Olalewu’, ’Ipo Agba’ and ’Odaran’.

Nigerian actor, Leye Kuti, recently called out his colleagues for abandoning Egbegbe at such a critical time.

Also, Mr Egbegbe’s publicised affair with Nollywood actress, Toyin Abraham, a few years ago shot him into limelight.

The relationship, however, ended in a controversial manner.

As the rate stands, it appears the parallel market rate determines the prevailing rate for most buyers.

Battle For Lagos Takes New Twist As Owolabi Salis Wins At Appeal Court
source : https://eyesoflagos.com/2019/08/07/battle-for-lagos-takes-new-twist-as-owolabi-salis-wins-at-appeal-court/

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, ordered the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Ikeja to resume hearing of two petitions challenging Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s victory at the March 9 governorship election.

A five-man panel of the court led by Justice Hussein Mukthar, in a unanimous decision, allowed the two petitions.

They were filed by the defeated governorship candidates of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Lagos State, Mr Owolabi Salis, and his Labour Party counterpart, Ifagbemi Awamaridi, respectively.

Other members of the panel were Justices O. O. Daniel-Kalio, O. F. Ogbuinya, Stephen Adah and B. B. Aliyu.

The appellate court, in two similar judgments, had upturned the June 17 decision of the Tribunal which dismissed the petitions filed by Salis and Awamaridi.

Eyes Of Lagos reports that the tribunal upturned the decision on the ground that both petitioners failed to file their applications for pre-hearing conference within seven days as prescribed by the law.

The appeal court held that the tribunal erred when it ruled that the appellants had abandoned their petitions.

The appeal court noted that the Tribunal failed to check its own record of proceedings before determining that Salis and Awamaridi filed out of time.

“From the record, it is clear that the tribunal was wrong to have declared the petition as an abandoned petition.

“The case is to be remitted to the lower court for expeditious hearing of the matter,” the court held on Owolabi’s appeal.

The court’s ruling was also similar on Awamaridi’s appeal.

The respondents in the suit are: the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr Sanwo-Olu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the INEC Residential Electoral Commissioner.

FG orders oil companies’ to clear debt owed stevedoring firms
source : https://eyesoflagos.com/2019/08/05/fg-orders-oil-companies-to-clear-debt-owed-stevedoring-firms/

The Federal Government has ordered the International Oil Companies (IOC) to clear all outstanding debt being owed stevedoring firms in the nation’s maritime sector.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Disclosing this to newsmen on Sunday, President of the National Association of Stevedoring Companies (NASC), Bolaji Sunmola who attended the meeting held in Abuja last Wednesday explained that the IOC’s have been given a timeline to comply with the laws of the land.

NASC President said, “you know that the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is mandated by law to appoint stevedoring firms at the nation’s seaports.

“The stevedoring firms being owed by the IOC’s were duly appointed by the NPA, and so refusal to pay the stevedoring firms monies belonging to the maritime workers by the IOC’s is a breach of the laws of the land.

“We were there last Wednesday in Abuja during the meeting called by the Federal Ministry of Transportation (FMOT). The IOC’s were equally there and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN).

“At the meeting, the IOC’s were mandated to comply with the laws of the land by paying up debt owed the stevedoring companies.”

When asked if there was a timeline given to the IOC’s or it’s something they (IOC) could do at their convenience, Bolaji Sunmola stated that the Federal Government handed out a timeline for payment.

In his words, “there was a timeline handed out for payment of all outstanding debt being owed the stevedoring firms by the IOC’s. The IOC’s were there themselves, and didn’t object to this.”

He, however, declined to give details of the timeline handed out to the IOC’s to effect payment to the stevedoring firms.

It would be recalled that maritime workers under the aegis of the MWUN had embarked on a three days strike to drive home their displeasure of being owed months of entitlement by the IOC’s. The strike which had grounded port operations across the country forced the Federal Government to mediate between the stevedoring firms and the IOC’s.

FFS N9.20bn Request: The Quest To Fulfill A Distant Mandate
source: https://eyesoflagos.com/2019/08/04/ffs-n9-20bn-request-the-quest-to-fulfill-a-distant-mandate/

In a bid to boost the capacity of the Federal Fire Service, the Agency is requesting the sum of N9.20bn Special Intervention fund. CHRISTIANA NWAOGU writes that among the challenges facing them are; shortage of fire stations, obsolete equipment amongst others.

For decades, the gap between the potential and reality of Federal Fire fighters has been beyond our reach. But with the efforts of the present Controller General of the Service (FFS) , Alhaji Liman Ibrahim, the nation and the world at large, is beginning to acknowledge the potentials and prospects of the drive of this very critical wing of government and how far they have come in achieving their set targets and aspirations , thus, making the agency a reference point , not just in Nigeria but the African Continent.

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) today is a departure of what it used to be before Liman took over the saddle.

Since he became Fire Service boss, Dr Liman Ibrahim has given strategic direction to the agency by repositioning it as a lead driver in the delivery of dividends. He has given the FFS and the government , a new corporate character, inspiring many across a wide spectrum , to sign up to his vision for taking the service into the future.

The persona of Alhaji Liman Ibrahim inspires the very high of regards: his charisma and sincerity; intelligence and confidence, modesty, dedication , drive , hardwork and insistence on excellence.

He has demonstrated prudence , insight , transparency , boldness and high integrity. All these have helped brand FFS as an agency with a responsible leadership, a wealth of ideas and a sense of purpose.

In getting his vision off -the line less than a year into the helm of affairs, the CG, has toiled tirelessly , running the affairs of the agency under his watch with dispatch.

Prior to his assumption of office , the fire agency was a by-word for backwater service, grappling with age -long challenges of despair, inadequate funding and infrastructural deficiencies.

The appointment of Liman Ibrahim as the third Controller General has made the FFS tick, moreso, he has fine- tuned , tailored and matched governments investments with complimenting results, thereby charting a course for our nation.

Today, Liman can be said to be the architect of the modern and transformed Fire Service we lay claim to as a people. It’s a fact that he inherited a fire fighting agency in utmost despair, laid back and dilapidated, decrepit and derelict infrastructure, an agency that used over one hundred and sixteen years (116) outdated equipment.

Most importantly, the totality of his effort has now placed the Service at par with its counterparts in Africa and beyond, restoring the nations confidence on its ability to contain fire outbreaks, save lives and property through effective service delivery.

Today, with the mandate totally on his shoulder, Dr. Alhaji Liman Ibrahim can be said to be using the midas touch. He has applied the biblical wisdom of Solomon to change the mindset of Nigerians towards the Fire Service.

Since his assumption of office after the retirement of his predecessor , Engr Joseph Garba Anebi, undaunted by seemingly insurmountable challenges, the determined Liman hit the ground running to translate his lofty dreams into concrete reality.

A visionary leader with determination and doggedness , he runs the Fire Service like a Chief Marketing Officer with the motive of delivering dividends to shareholders , meeting customer ( fire victims) and clientele demands, while re- orienting and re- enlightening staff and repositioning the brand (FFS) in the market place as a fire runner and a quintessential brand.

Liman who is bent on rewritting the history of FFS with his giant strides in many facets; unprecedented infrastructural development, human capital development and other major upliftment of the agency says he will shape it in extraordinary ways and redefined their existence .

To attain this aspiration, the Fire Service boss (FFS), Dr Liman , some days back made a passionate appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to inject the sum of N9.20bn Special Intervention Fund into the Service to enable it procure and address fire fighting mobile asset deficit across the country.

The Fire boss who made the appeal while commissioning twelve (12) out of the forty four (44) modern firefighting trucks approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in 2017 and 2018 in Abuja, lamented that while 19 out of the balance is ready for shipment , the Service cannot take delivery of the remaining 13 which are at finishing stages of production due to cuts in it’s 2018 and 2019 Capital budget proposal.

Liman regretted that , this is in spite of all appeal made to the appropriate authorities to retain the Service’s budget as proposed. He said, “ It is in this regard that I am seeking the Intervention of Mr. President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), for Special Intervention Fund in the sum of N9.20bn to enable delivery of the remaining equipment.”

The CG, who acknowledged that the phenomenal increase in the fire fighting asset base under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari is unprecedented in the history of the Service gave a breakdown of projects so far executed to include refurbishment of 20 firefighting trucks and ancillary equipment.

He enumerated others to include the rehabilitation of Fire Service barracks and stations in Abuja and Lagos, upgrading of fire training facilities at the National Fire Academy , Sheda, Delivery of 44 modern fire fighting trucks, water tankers and ancillary equipment as well as the recruitment of over 2,200 Firefighters among others.

Dr. Liman further revealed that the federal government recently approved the establishment of additional six Zonal Headquarters and four Fire Service Training School across the country. He said the locations for the new zonal headquarters are Minna, Sokoto, Yola, Owerri, Asaba, and Osogbo while the training schools are in Katsina , Maiduguri, Ilorin, Umuahia and Yenogoa.

Others are the development of modern communication centre for enhanced emergency response , effective command and control and fire safety regulatory activities.

Others are upgrading of the NationalFire Academy Sheds to a degree awarding institution with it’s affiliation to the Nigeria Defence Academy Kaduna for the purpose of offering post graduate degree courses in disaster management as well as the strengthening of FFS presence in the states.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Barrister Georgina Ekeoma Ehuriah at the occasion, described the commissioning of the twelve trucks as a further testimony of the determination of the administration of President Muhamadu Buhari to take the Fire Agency to the next level.

Barr Ehuriah said, “ since the PMB administration came into power in 2015, the FFS has continued to enjoy improved funding which has changed the face of the Service from a hitherto moribund institution with dilapidated and outdated fire fighting vehicles and accessories to a world class institution.

While commissioning the trucks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federal (SGF), Boss Mustapha, said the President Muhamadu Buhari’s administration is committed to the safety of lives and property of Nigerians and Foreigners alike, hence , the approval by the immediate past Federal Executive Council (FEC) of the procurement of these equipment to boost the economy in line with government policy on Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP)”.

Boss Mustapha who stated that the FFS remains a priority of the PMB’s led administration said to prove this, the government shall continue to empower it to enable it secure national assets and continue to procure more fire fighting equipment to boost fire safety.

He said, “ the Federal Fire Service , as one of the Security Agencies of government , shall be provided with the necessary tools required to secure National Assets and Critical Infrastructure thus, enhancing economic growth of our nation.”

The SGF pledged that , the federal government will continue to procure more of these world class and modern fire fighting equipment in other to improve the euipment holding of the service.

Boss Mustafa expressed the optimism that when fully equipped and empowered, the Service should and must function as the insurance portfolio of the economy. “The economic portfolio of the nation must be be protected by the Fire Service against destruction by fire and related emergencies.

The SGF who condemned the recent killing of innocent citizens and burning down of the Emergency Response Shelter operated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at the Central Business District , Abuja by the IMN said, the federal government will continue to ensure that the Paramilitary Services under the Ministry of Interior , particularly the FFS enjoy the support of the administration to deliver to the nation quality service of providing safety and security.

Eyes Of Lagos however gathered that so far, the Federal Fire Service has among other notable feats created sponsorship for States Fire Service personnel to be trained on enforcement of the National Fire Service Code, ICT and other relevant areas.

Findings further revealed that FFS has also provided Insurance cover for staff in cases of accidents or deaths as well as the outright payment of death benefits. Nothing beats this kind of vision in any reputable organisation.

As a proof of the CG’s quest for excellence and intellectual prowess, he has further widened the scope of this year’s conference of Directors of States Fire Service , billed to take place from August 5-9, 2019 in Kwara State to encompass stakeholders to collaborate in fire fighting activities in the country.

The serviv also introduced the academic journal for the purpose of gathering thoughts and ideas from scholars in Nigeria , with respect to the causes of Urban Market Fire in Nigeria with a view to finding a lasting solution to the menace.

A Fire Safety expert, Mr Alabi Akinwumi who expressed the optimism that Liman will judiciously utilise the N9.20bn Special Intervention Fund requested for if released said, “ I was quite aware that things are bad with the country’s Federal Fire Service.”

Akinwumi who described Nigeria as a country that has to contend with numerous fire and other disasters almost on a daily basis was shocked that for two decades, there was no new addition to the tools of the primary agency responsible for the management of fire disasters .

He said, “this to say the least, is criminal, condemnable and heart-rending! Imagine hundreds of lives that have been lost to fire disasters. Contemplate properties worth billions, if not trillions, of naira annually lost to infernos. How can successive administrations neglect the country’s fire service?

The Fire Expert further questioned thus, “How well can a badly maintained 20-year-old vehicle perform? If the Federal Fire Service is treated with disdain, one does not need to be a soothsayer to know that state fire services will not fare any better.”

One of the drivers of Airport Car Hire Association of Nigeria (ACHAN), Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, Mr. Adeniyi Olayinka has returned a sum of N888,000 and an international passport forgotten by a passenger in his car to the passenger.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Olayinka told journalists at the airport on Wednesday that he discovered the items in an envelope left behind by the passenger on the back seat of the car shortly after he returned to the airport from Ibese Ikorodu destination of the passenger.

The driver who doesn’t have a car of his own, but works as commissioned driver to another member of the association, said it never crossed his mind to covert another person’s belonging because it would put another family in sorrow and it is against the orientation given to every member of ACHAN in the airport.

“Though it could be tempting to some people to see such money and pocket it, especially when their income is very poor. As for me, it never crossed my mind to do so. Because it would create sorrow in another family and also such idea is against the orientation we are given at ACHAN by our leaders,” he said.

Explaining how he found the money and the passport, Adeniyi who has been operating in the airport for fifteen years said: “At about 1:30am on Monday I met this passenger on arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. I negotiated with him and we agreed at N6000 to transport him to his destination at Ikorodu. I returned to the airport immediately I dropped him at his house. But no sooner I arrived and parked my car at the airport I discovered that an enveloped had been left behind on the back seat of my car. I picked the envelope and opened it. What I saw was his international passport. I looked further into the envelope and discovered there was another white envelope inside. I opened the second envelope only to discover that something was wrapped in it. When I removed the wrapper I discovered it contained mint fresh notes of US currency. They were in $100 denomination. I counted and they were 24 in number totalling $2,400. When converted at prevailing rate of N370 as at Monday morning, it amounted to N888,000.

‘’Based on the orientation and instructions we received from the leadership of ACHAN on weekly basis, I reported the findings to the officer on duty at the arrival car park of the airport. I was instructed to drop the parcel and its contents at our secretariat at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

“Since I didn’t have the passenger’s phone contact, I had to go to his the place where I dropped him to inform him or his family member of the discovery. But by the time I got to the passenger’s home at Ibese, Ikorodu, I was told he had returned to the airport to look for the lost parcel. As I was leaving the house in Ikorodu, I got the call from our secretariat that the passenger was already in the airport to report the loss”.

Speaking on the recovery, the passenger, Engr. Dele Ayeni who said he was a living testimony to the advantages of taking cabs from registered point at airports, believe there is hope for Nigeria in many way.

‘’ I arrived Lagos, Nigeria from Cairo on July 29, 2019 at about 1:30 am on Monday. My intention when I arrived was to call an Uber operator to pick me home as soon as I step out of the terminal building. But as I was coming out of the terminal, I met this polite driver who agreed to take me to my destination at Ikorodu at an agreed price of N6,000. While on the way, I decided to drop my jacket on the floor of the car to avoid been notice as a very important man sitting in the rear seat of the car.

‘’ Immediately we got to my house in Ikorodu; I removed my jacket from where I had kept it and also my luggage, without noticing that the envelope in the jacket had dropped on the back seat of the car.’’

Air Peace Captain Simisola Ajibola who operated the Air Peace flight on July 23, which had nose wheel collapse, has debunked reports, saying the aircraft landed without tyres.

She said the incident, which took place at the international runway of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, happened after the aircraft touched down.

“We had a very serviceable aircraft. Our aircraft are machines that are well maintained. It wasn’t the first flight of that day. When we flew the aircraft it was perfectly in good shape.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, “The report about initial landing without tyres is not true. The incident happened after we touched down. I didn’t go into the air without tyres, we weren’t on a decent without tyres. Some reports say we called for emergency while in the air and that is not true. It was after we landed we asked for emergency services. So whatever happened, happened on the runway that day,” Ajibola added.

However, Tunji Oketunbi, corporate communications manager, Accident Investigation Bureau, (AIB) said the bureau has begun investigation into the issue and will come up with preliminary reports soon.

National Assembly Joint Committee has raised concern over Federal Inland Revenue Service’s (FIRS) 2019 projected estimate of non oil revenue tax collection of N146.54 billion. The Co-chairman of the committee, Sen. John Enoh and other members of the committee raised the concern at FIRS’s budget defence in Abuja on Monday. The committee sought to know why the 2018 approved estimate was N153.85 while the 2019 projected cost stood at N146.54 amounting to 4.75 per cent decrease. On personnel cost, the committee asked why the service was proposing 14.6 per cent increase in number of staff from 7, 854 in 2018 to 9000 staff in 2019. It equally demanded explanation to the “proposed N160 million meant to sew drivers’ uniforms, N825 million for refreshment and security vote of N250 million among others. Eyes Of Lagos report that, The Executive Chairman of FIRS, Mr Tunde Fowler while presenting the budget proposal, noted that the proposed increase in staff strength was due to recruitment of staff scheduled in 2019. He further explained that N160 million was earmarked to sew uniforms for the 850 drivers of the service as part of effort to make them fit properly into the structure. Also, he said the amount earmarked for security vote was meant to attend to some security issues, particularly those not receipted for. “The achievement of 2019 budget will be driven by increase oil and non-oil revenue tax collection. “The service in realisation of this responsibility and challenges of doing manual collection will continue to implement automated tax collection for the critical sectors of the economy notably telecommunications, airlines and financial institutions. “The deployment of these platforms is at no cost to the service and the consultants will only be rewarded on increased revenue generation. “There will be increased enforcement activities nationwide to bring more tax payers into the tax net and increase compliance level,’’ Fowler said.

Aggrieved members of the joint aviation unions, Wednesday shot down the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Abuja office to demand for the sack of its Director General, Mr Muktar Usman over alleged high handedness and improve conditions of service. The unions also accused Muktar of not being interested in the welfare and being autocratic in his leadership approach, adding that the director general had refused to pursue the approval of the condition of service. One of the protesters, Dauda Nanbol said “our grievances are that we have some industrial issues and those are issues bothering around the structure of NCAA which comprise of the directorate and department. ” The NCAA management has decided to collapse some the directorate and department which have limited space for people existing in the organization to grow career wise . “While our members sit to write promotion exams and are expected to be promoted but they will be informed that there is no vacancy in the directorate. We are calling on the organization to implement the reviewed organogran as agreed by the Union and NCAA because we have agreed that those directorate and department that have been merged should be returned as they were so that our people can be promoted. “We also have issues of people being employed to occupy the managerial post on contract basis while people growing in the career are told that they cannot attain the post because there are no vacancy for them in this paces.” “Also on the issue of condition of service, We all know that as workers we deserve our wages and our wages are our right because we put in our effort. But our condition of service are being reviewed from time to time but the CoS of NCAA has been lying down in the salaries and wages commission and the management are not interested in getting approval for that CoS to be implemented not to talk of implementation.” The unions are the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN), National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engine era (NAAPE) and Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP). The unions, which threatened to lockdown the airport and disrupt flight operations from Thursday if the federal government failed to address their grievances, are demanding among other things the review of the staff condition of service, returning to the original organogram of NCAA and inauguration of the board of the authority. Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika had said the demands of the unions were not in the best interest of the sector, adding that the unions had not come to him for dialogue before now. Sirika said that NCAA or the ministry was responsible for the delay in the review of the staff condition of service, explaining that the National Salaries and Wages Commission was the agency of government responsible for approving it. On the organogram of the agency, he said that the government took the decision to reduce the number of the directorates in NCAA because of the cost of running the agency. Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, The minister explained that over 500 staff were stagnated without promotion in the organization for several years before he assumed office in 2015, adding that majority of staff had so far been promoted. He said that those yet to be promoted were very few. On the appointment and inauguration of the board, he said that the civil aviation regulations made it mandatory for the government to only appoint an aviator to head the board. According to him, the persons earlier nominated were a non-aviator, which he said was responsible for the delay in the inauguration of the board.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the governments of Oyo and Osun States to declare state of emergency on the Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso. The Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Dr Ade Adejumo and Chairman of the LAUTECH chapter of the Union, Dr Biodun Olaniran who stated this while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday noted that it was not enough to make LAUTECH a campaign issue and not attend to the problems bedeviling the state institution after the polls. Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, The duo appealed to the outgoing government not to politicise raising subvention to 100 per cent but also pay all outstanding debts owed tertiary institutions before leaving office. Adejumo and Olaniran lamented that while Ajimobi was busy awarding contracts few days to leaving office he had not cleared 10 months salaries being owed staff of the institution. They lamented that LAUTECH do not have condition of service for her workers. The ASUU leaders therefore called on the incoming governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde and Governor of Osun State Gboyega to inject funds into the jointly run institution to avoid crisis. “It is not too much for Oyo and Osun governments to declare state of emergency on LAUTECH. It is not enough to make it a campaign issue during the elections in both states. “If Ajimobi wants to raise subvention to tertiary institutions, he knows how much he is owing these institutions. He should go and settle the debt he owes the schools since he is busy awarding contracts left, right and center. We are being owed 10 months salary and most of our demands are not met yet. “Imagine LAUTECH does not have what he can claim as a condition of service for workers”, they said.

CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA URGED TO SUSTAIN MONETARY POLICY TO FURTHER CURB INFLATION
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2019/02/central-bank-of-nigeria-urged-to.html

A Don, Dr Austine Nwaeze, has urged the apex bank to sustain its current monetary policy to curb the nation’s inflation rate.
Nwaeze, who teaches Economics at the Pan Atlantic University, Lekki, Lagos said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday.
The lecturer, who was reacting to the inflation figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday in Abuja, noted that a lower inflation rate would lead to price stability.
Eyes Of Lagos reports that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) released by NBS showed that inflation decreased to 11.37 per cent (year-on-year) in January 2019 compared to 11.44 per cent in December 2018.
According to the CPI figures, urban inflation rate also decreased to 11.66 per cent (year-on-year) from 11.73 per cent December, while the rural inflation rate dropped to 11.11 per cent from 11.18 per cent in December.
However, core inflation, which excludes the prices of volatile agricultural produce stood at 9.9 per cent in January, representing an increase of 0.1 per cent compared with 9.8 per cent recorded in December.
Nwaeze said the apex bank’s continuous monitory intervention in the investment and export window had reduced the pressure on the country’s foreign exchange.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, According to him, the sustained initiative has eliminated forex round-tripping and made foreign denominations available and close to convergent rate.
He said the inflation rate would have dipped further, if not for the spending caused by the 2019 general election.
“The inflation should have declined more than what is being released by the bureau, because of the tightening approach by the monitory authorities.
“The Monitory Policy Committee had kept the lending rate at 14 per cent for a long time, reducing the sum of funds in circulations and this has helped to curb inflation,” he said.
In November, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, said he expected the central bank to keep monetary policy tight in 2019.
Emefiele said the short-term outlook for the economy was good and that the country was open for foreign investors.

'I STARTED OUT AS A FIREWOOD-SELLING ORPHAN' - ATIKU
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/11/i-started-out-as-firewood-selling.html

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says he once was a firewood seller in Jada, Adamawa state.

The former vice-president made this known on Monday while launching his presidential campaign via a broadcast on Facebook.

“I started out as an orphan selling firewood on the streets of Jada in Adamawa, but God, through the Nigerian state, invested in me and here I am today. If Nigeria worked for me, I owe it as my duty to make sure that Nigeria also works for you,” he said.

During the broadcast, Atiku said his primary focus is getting Nigeria to work again.

“The most important question in this election is: Are you better off than you were four years ago? Are we richer or poorer?” he asked.

“I am not making grandiose promises. Rather than promises, I believe in policies.

“A promise is an indication to do a future action. A policy is a plan to achieve future goal. As the International Monetary Fund stated very recently, it is the failure of this government to have a coherent and comprehensive set of policies combined with poor leadership that has led to its failure to deliver.

“Over the last 18 months, I have worked with the best experts Nigeria has to offer to come up with policies and plans that when implemented will get Nigeria going in the right direction again.”

Atiku said while he was vice-president between 1999 and 2007, he chaired the national economic council that “gave Nigeria her highest and most consistent GDP growth of over 6% per annum”.

If elected, Atiku said he will be proactive in attracting investment and supporting the small and medium scale enterprises across Nigeria for the purpose of doubling the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025.

Atiku shared his plan to embark on partial privatisation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and to also cut corporate income tax.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has expressed optimism of surpassing its N1.3 trillion target for the 2018 fiscal year as the Service said it already generated a total of N998.4 billion as revenue between January and October 2018.
The revenue was generated from import duty, excise duty, and Value Added Tax (VAT), among other fees. A breakdown of the revenue shows that the NCS generated N96.6 billion in January, N79.26 billion in February, N87.58 billion in March and N94.3 billion in April.
In May, it recorded N100.5 billion, N98.4 billion in June, N94.9 billion in July and N139.9 billion in August, which represented the highest monthly collection so far. N99.5 billion was generated in September, while N106.8 was recorded in October.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Meanwhile, national public relations officer of the NCS, Joseph Attah, has said that clearing agents do not have the authority to question the structure in Customs or how the agency carries out its responsibilities.
Attah, who was reacting to concerns raised by the agents over the multiplicity of Customs units who they alleged extort and delay cargo even after such cargo had exited the port, advised the agents to report such allegations if substantiated to the Customs management for necessary disciplinary measures.

“The strike force don’t erect checkpoint. They are strategically located. They only act when they receive intelligence because they don’t want to impede the free flow of goods in line with the ease of doing business. The Customs police on its own is a unit created to instill discipline in the system.According to the Customs spokesman, “We have three layers of security in our job. One is the resident officer, which is the commanding officer. If for any reason a cargo escape those people and come out, the Federal Operations Unit will be there to intercept the container and if for any reason, the agent escape their catch and even arrive at his warehouse, and then there is an intelligence that gets to the strike force, they will leave where they are and go and strike and evacuate the container.
“How Customs operate and achieve the result is a matter of strategy. The Customs management reserves the right to adopt a strategy that is most suitable and most productive to achieve the result. I think it will be unfair for anybody to question why we should adopt a particular strategy. What should be important to members of the public is if in the course of discharging these duties, they cross the line, then we will appreciate feedbacks to us with necessary detail to arrest those concerns and deal with the issue. ”Attah, however, noted that it takes two to tango, saying agents who do proper declaration and pay accurate duty would not have any reason for complain

Eyes Of Lagos report that, Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Alimosho Local Government, Lagos Mainland, yesterday, Tuesday, October 9, 2018, protested the alleged imposition of House of Representatives and House of Assembly candidates to represent the community by the state executive.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, According to the protesters, the acting PDP state Chairman, Dr. Adegbola Dominic led executives picked candidates without holding congress.
Some of the aggrieved aspirants complained that the acting chairman handpicked his cronies and forwarded their names to the national headquarters of the PDP as the elected candidates to represent Alimosho Constituency.
In a petition signed by eight aspirants Abu Ojeikere, Olanrewaju Lateef, Uduomon Ohis, Adedipe Dauda Ewenla, Shina Babatunde and Ijimayowa Abbas – vying for seats in the House of Representatives and House of Assembly, they expressed their anger over the alleged failure of the state executive to hold a congress in the community.
Commenting on the development, one of the aggrieved aspirants, Alhaji Modius Oladega, said: “I paid N650, 000 to purchase form for the House of Assembly under the PDP in Alimosho Constituency II.
“According to the party’s guideline, we are supposed to have a congress so that a person will emerge the winner in a free and fair election. We were waiting for the congress to hold. But, to my surprise, somebody called me that they are the elected aspirants.
“Unfortunately, no congress has taken place; but the acting state Chairman, Dr Dominic, without recourse to the local government PDP chairman, selected some names for reasons best known to him and said they are the elected ones.
“This is not democracy; this is killing democracy. Me and other aspirants are appealing to the National PDP chairman to reject the names sent by Dr Dominic as the elected aspirants from Alimosho LGA. We want a congress to hold in Alimosho Local Government Area as it was done in other councils.”
Another aspirant, Mr Olanrewaju Lateef, an aspirant for the House of Representatives, said he bought a form for N1.7 million and no congress was held.
Efforts to reach the party’s State executives for comments proved futile as at press time.
