Suspected gunmen on Tuesday night reportedly attacked the Nigeria Immigration Service office in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, making away with firearms belonging to officers on duty.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 10:00 p.m. at the immigration office located along the Ogbomoso–Ilorin Motorway, near the NNPC filling station.

Sources said the assailants stormed the facility while commercial activities were still ongoing at the nearby Ayanyan Cattle Market.

During the attack, officers on duty were reportedly overpowered and dispossessed of their firearms. The exact number of weapons taken could not be immediately confirmed.

Following the operation, the attackers reportedly fled the scene under the cover of darkness.

When contacted for confirmation, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP, Olayinka Ayanlade, said he had not yet received an official briefing on the incident.

“I have not been briefed on the incident at this time. I will provide updates as soon as the necessary information becomes available,” the police spokesman stated.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the attack, while efforts were ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and the whereabouts of the perpetrators.

A cleric, Adebayo Micheal, said many residents had fled while others travelled due to fear and the festive period.

"A lot of people have run away while some travelled for festivities. They should help us to rescue these children and teachers.

“The trauma they are going through is too much. Even after rescuing the children, they should not forget us. Our town is close to the reserve. There are different kinds of people in that reserve. They should help us,” he pleaded.

Abducted principal speaks from captivity in new video

In a related development, the abducted principal of Community Grammar School, Esinele, Mrs Alamu Folawe, has again appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde to prioritise negotiation over force in securing the release of the victims.

Speaking from captivity in a distress video circulated on social media on Friday, the visibly exhausted principal said the abductees, including schoolchildren, had spent 13 days in the forest under harsh weather conditions.

“We are in the cold, under the sun and inside the rain. The children and adults are suffering. Please don’t let them waste our lives,” she pleaded.

Folawe warned against further military confrontation, claiming an earlier rescue attempt worsened their situation and triggered threats by the abductors to execute one of the victims.

“The force they used yesterday has cost us so much. It added to our problems. One person among us has been picked and they want to kill him because the government tried to help us by force,” she said.

The principal appealed to the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the Christian Association of Nigeria to intervene, insisting that dialogue remained the safest option for securing their release.

“We don’t need force. All they have to do is negotiate with them and release us,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Teachers staged a peaceful protest in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday.

The protesting teachers, who converged on the Iwo Road axis of the state capital, carried placards with inscriptions such as, ‘Bring Back Our Children’ and ‘No More Banditry,’ while singing solidarity songs demanding immediate government action.

The protesters condemned what they described as increasing attacks on schools and rural communities, warning that insecurity was crippling education in vulnerable parts of the state.

Some of the teachers lamented the trauma experienced by families of the abducted children, saying prolonged captivity could have devastating psychological consequences on the victims.

Also, the National Association of Nigerian Students announced plans to stage a solidarity and advocacy rally in Oyo State on Monday over the continued detention of the abducted pupils and teachers.

In an invitation addressed to NANS structures nationwide, the association’s President, Akinteye Babatunde, described the situation as “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”

According to him, Nigerian students can no longer remain silent while innocent schoolchildren and teachers remain in the custody of armed groups.

The planned rally will include visits to the affected schools, the Oyo State Police Command and the Department of State Services office before a peaceful march through parts of Ibadan.

“It has been two weeks since this cruel and callous act was perpetrated and it is appalling that till this day the abducted students and teachers are yet to be rescued,” Akinteye stated.
