The Labour Party's Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed have received the African Democratic Congress' support for the February 25 presidential election.



The support follows the creation of a coalition that intends to advance the pair to the nation's highest position, according to a post on the political party's official Twitter page.



On Monday morning in Abuja, the endorsement was conducted at the River Plate Gardens.

A pastor in Mozambique, Francisco Barajah, has died after attempting to fast for 40 days like Jesus was said to have done after his baptism, according to a report shared on Thursday.



Barajah, who founded the Santa Trindade Evangelical Church in the central province of Manica, was unable to stand, bathe or walk by the end of his fast, Noticias Online reports. He passed away at the hospital in the city of Beira on Wednesday.



Relatives and friends became concerned about Barajah’s health as he visibly deteriorated, ultimately deciding to intervene in his fatal act of faith.



A local report of Barajah’s attempt to recreate the fast said he was foregoing water as well as food. The pastor, who also worked as a French school teacher, was said to have developed “severe anaemia,” had internal organ damage and was unable to digest food.



It adds that one of Barajah’s neighbours said the clergyman had become sick on the 25th day of his fast, but that his health became much worse on the 38th day. Medics reportedly attempted to rehydrate and nourish Barajah with liquid foods, but to no avail.



His followers were said to be unsurprised by the news of his death after seeing his extreme weight loss.

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Thursday depart Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU).

“The President will participate in three High Level meetings on peace and security, climate change and the political situation in some West African countries.





“First is the Peace and Security Council (PSC) meeting of Heads of State and Government on the situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (AUPSC High Level AU), to be chaired by the President of South Africa, in his capacity as the Chair of the Council for the month of February.



”Second is the meeting of the Committee of the Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), currently chaired by the President of Niger Republic,” he said.



Shehu added that on the margins of the annual meetings of the AU, Buhari would also attend an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.



“The Nigerian leader will deliver remarks at these events as well as present his National Statement at the opening session of the Summit, which brings together leaders from the AU member countries as well as a number of non-AU countries and international institutions accredited to the AU in Addis Ababa.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has refused to sell tickets to passengers carrying old Naira notes, stranding them.



According to reports, the early morning train to Ibadan was nearly disrupted by protests following the NRC’s initial refusal to collect old Naira notes.



When the early morning passengers became agitated and tension was brewing, the NRC was forced to accept old Naira notes and the early morning train was then allowed to leave for Ibadan in peace.



However, this afternoon, we were directed not to collect the old Naira notes. The 4 pm train just left for Ibadan and about ten passengers couldn’t board because they didn’t have the new Naira notes.



Why there was so much confusion with the morning train was because the number of passengers with old Naira notes far outweigh the number of those with new Naira notes. But this afternoon train that left around 4 pm didn’t experience such confusion because only ten passengers had old Naira notes with them.



What will happen tomorrow morning is what we don’t know since we have been directed not to collect the old Naira notes.



We have since the suspended collection of old Naira notes on the Lagos Mass Transit Trains. The decision to suspend collection of old Naira notes onboard the Lagos-Ibadan train just started yesterday afternoon, an NRC worker who wouldn’t want her name in print told the Tribune Online.



Speaking on the development, Mr. Eric Umezurike, Managing Director of First Fit Nigeria Limited and a train passenger, said that a Federal Government agency like the Nigerian Railway Corporation is better positioned to collect old naira notes and seamlessly exchange them with its sister agency, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).



According to him;



if a government agency is rejecting old Naira notes at a period when the case was still pending in court, what would be the expectations from market women supermarkets and petrol attendants.



Speaking to journalists at Mobolaji Johnson Station, some of the passengers who were unable to board the 4 p.m. train vowed to stage protests at the train station the next time they were denied access due to the issue of old Naira notes.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned hearing in a suit filed by three states against the federal government, seeking order to stop the full implementation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) naira redesign policy.



The apex bank adjourned the suit filed by Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara states to 22 February.



Zamfara, Kaduna and Kogi had approached the Supreme Court of Nigeria for reliefs on behalf of their citizens to challenge the Feb. 10, CBN deadline for old naira notes to cease to be legal tender.



The Supreme Court in its ruling on Feb. 8, directed all parties to maintain the status quo and quashed the Feb.10, 2023 deadline till the determination of the case which was adjourned to Feb. 15, 2023.





However, while some other states seek to join Zamfara, Kaduna and Kogi in the suit, Bayelsa and Edo State also applied to join on the side of the Federal Government.

The Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo State has invented a 7.5kva fuelless and fumeless generator.



This development was revealed on Friday by the Rector of the institution, Engr. Dr. Michael Chidiebere Arimanwa.

In his explanation on how the generator works, a lecturer at the Mechanical Engineering Department, Engr. Samuel Onyenobi said the fuelless generator is powered by a 12 volts, 75Amp DC battery which stores chemical energy that drives the 3 horsepower DC motor.



“There is a 28kg flywheel coupled to two pulleys and one of the pulleys which is driven by the flywheel turns an alternator of 7.5KVA to generate 150V AC current which is boosted to 220V using a transformer and automatic voltage regulator for stabilization of the voltage.



The alternating current derived is being converted to Direct Current of 12 volts to charge battery and avoid its drain,” he said.

The presidential ambition of the Labour Party (LP) flagbearer, Peter Obi, has suffered a setback as one of the party chieftains in Ebonyi State, Engr. Henry Ude, popularly known as Ajim Best, defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Addressing reporters on Wednesday in Abakaliki, the state capital, Ude said he decided to return to the PDP to work for the victory of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Popular Nigerian singer Seun Kuti has stated that he was a fool when he campaigned for the former governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in 1999.

Seun stated this in a trending video shared on his Instagram page to address his alleged support for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

On Thursday, a US court convicted a Russian-born woman of trying to kill her American lookalike with poisoned cheesecake and then stealing her identity.

The 47-year-old woman, Viktoria Nasyrova, was booked for attempted murder by a jury in New York, per a statement by the district attorney for the city's borough of Queens.

In August 2016, Nasyrova went to the home of her then-35-year-old victim, carrying the cheesecake as a gift.



During the trial, it was revealed that the pair resembled one another at the time.

They both spoke Russian, had dark hair, the same skin complexion and shared other physical traits.



The victim began to feel sick and passed out eventually after eating the dessert brought by Nasyrova. She was discovered unconscious by a friend the following day.

Prosecutors told the court that pills were scattered around her to make it look like she had tried to kill herself.

When the victim returned home after treatment in hospital, she discovered her passport and employment authorisation card were missing, along with jewellery and other valuables.

According to the DA's office, law enforcement agents tested the cheesecake and found it was laced with Phenazepam, a highly potent sedative.



Nasyrova faces 25 years of imprisonment

Nasyrova, who lives in Brooklyn, was also convicted of assault, unlawful imprisonment and theft. She is due to be sentenced on March 21 and faces up to 25 years in prison.



Nasyrova has also been accused of fatally drugging a neighbour in her native Russia in 2014. She denied killing the woman, Alla Alekseenko, in a 2017 interview with CBS News.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has arrested 516 illegal immigrants in Kaduna State.



They were arrested during a mop-up operation by Immigration officials in the Zaria area of the State.



The state Immigration Controller in Kaduna State Liman Sani Kila told newsmen that the illegal immigrants who are from Chad, Niger, and Togo were arrested following actionable intelligence.



He also disclosed that the Service had earlier this year recovered more than one thousand Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from illegal immigrants during a sting operation in various parts of the Kaduna metropolis.





According to the NIS Controller, they will be properly profiled after which they will be repatriated to their counties of origin.



He assured that the Nigerian Immigration Service is working closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (NIS) to ensure no foreigner takes part in the forthcoming elections.

International air passengers are dumping Nigerian airports for Cotonou, Ghana airports to connect international flights due to the exhobitant airfare by foreign airlines operating in Nigeria.



Speaking to journalists, on Friday, in a press conference over the unjustifiable profiteering by foreign carriers, the National president, National Association of Nigeria Travel Agents (NANTA), Susan Akporiaye, said Nigerians are traveling across the borders in droves to connect cheaper flights to their destinations.





NANTA disclosed that it lost between $450 million to $500 million revenue in one year as a result of the drop in ticket sales.



Airfares have risen to almost 400 per cent to all international destinations as foreign airlines operating in Nigeria blocked all low ticket inventories on their websites and have since continued to sell the highest inventories, making it difficult for passengers to buy affordable tickets.





The airlines also stopped travel agents in Nigeria from issuing tickets emanating from other countries into Nigeria in a bid to reduce the amount of money that would be trapped in Nigeria.



LEADERSHIP reports that foreign airlines have shut their lower inventories against Nigerians due to their $550 million trapped fund with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).



The closure of the lower inventories by the foreign airlines have made Nigerians pay a whooping N3 million on a one-way economy ticket and N1.8 million to change ticket date.





According to her, the lower inventories that are shut against Nigerians are opened in other neighboring countries, thereby, forcing Nigerians to seek cheaper flights in those countries.



She, however, said even though they have reached out to the foreign airline operators, their response are unconvincing, saying the fares are selfish, unreasonable and exploitative.



She said, “the trade rules are obnoxious, not consistent with global best practices and the fares are unjustifiably high, all in reaction to trapped funds. We at this stage have reasons to believe there is more to it. The fares and practices are strangulating and our Nigerian regulations is not deployed. No power of authority in Nigeria is presently holding back the rampaging practices of airlines and we regret to say NANTA members are not protected by government in this circumstances, neither is the Nigerian public.”



“The implication of Nigerians crossing the borders to join international flights is obvious. We lose business because the sales won’t be attributed to any traveling agency. The government will lose as well because the government will lose the five per cent Nigeria taxes on the ticket. Definitely, it will come down to ripple effect of loses to the industry.”



Akporiaye however, stated that the foreign airlines haven’t increased fare, rather, they shutdown lower inventories against Nigerians and travel agents.



“The fare hasn’t increased. Just that the lower inventories have been taken out from Nigeria market but they existed in those other countries. The N300,000 fare that we can’t get in Nigeria, they are getting it in neighboring countries. Now, let’s do the mathematics, N300,000 to N3 million. They won’t mind going to other neighboring countries to fly out especially if it’s not too far and it won’t cost them much.





“We are selling our opportunities to other countries and that’s not fair because we can’t continue to give out our benefits, we are selling our rights to neighboring countries,” she lamented.



“To put this in perspective, all low-fare inventories of the Airlines have been deliberately blocked to our members and to this market. Airlines, even after various engagements as partners, have seem not to take such relationship or business history with NANTA into consideration, rather haye gone ahead to make the market extremely difficult for members and in effect expensive for travelers.



“This now means, Nigeria is at a disadvantage since the airlines seems to have mastered the art of exploiting the FOREX issue to their advantage. Agencies are now forced to fold, leave the country or try to use other neighboring countries to sell to their customers, Nigeria travel market continues to be at the losing end with the airlines being indifferent to the plight of travelers and as a body we are left with no option than to call on the government to be more strategic, deliberate and direct in resolving this Multifaceted dilemma.



“Just to be clear, in the aviation downstream sector, businesses are currently folding up and more will follow suite, this will add to the unemployment challenge that the Federal government is wrestling with, if, urgent and precise actions are not taken to nip this development in the bud before it is too late.”



Also speaking, the former national financial secretary, NANTA, Daisi Olotu, disclosed that Nigerians are taking scarce dollars across the borders to purchase tickets in neighboring countries.



According to him, Nigerian government is losing money while the government of neighboring countries are making money from ticket sales and foreign exchange.





He said, “Nigerians buys tickets in dollars in Cotonou and fly out from their. All the airlines flying out of Cotonou are in Nigeria but they shut their low inventories against us in Nigeria and have it opened in Cotonou.

One of Tinubu’s main supporters, Governor Nasir El- Rufai of Kaduna State, has in the last few days accused some presidential aides of frustrating the campaign of the APC presidential candidate and using the new Naira policy to undermine support for the party.



Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has, however, accused the Tinubu camp of engaging in hate speech and trying to incite Nigerians to scuttle the elections.



Speaking at Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, venue of the presidential campaign rally yesterday, Tinubu said the people behind the crisis that is causing nationwide frustration and hardship to Nigerians want to spark turmoil that can lead to the postponement of the general elections.



“They are hoarding Naira so that you can be angry and fight. They want confusion so that the election can be postponed. What they want is an interim government. But we are wiser than them. We will not fight. Any rat that eats the rat poison will end up killing itself,” he told the audience.





The former Lagos State Governor told the people that he was in the presidential race to better their lives.



“I am in the race for the betterment of the people. If it is what I will eat and what I need personally, God has provided for me. I am in this race to make life good and better for you, too.



“Ekiti people are well educated people. They are well read; they don’t joke with education. But it is not good to finish schooling and not get a job. So, we shall provide jobs for you. On that day, we will trek to the polling booths to cast our votes. Your polling booths are not far from where you live. So, you should walk down to cast your votes,” Tinubu told his supporters.



Rallying the people of Ekiti to hope for better and happy life in his prepared speech, Tinubu said he believes every Nigerian is entitled to live a life of dignity.



“I believe each and every Nigerian is entitled to a life of dignity and happiness free from the fear of hunger, poverty, violence and hopelessness. I believe we can do better as a nation. I believe we must do better. History calls. Destiny Calls. Greatness calls.



“I came here today to offer you my best and assure you that I will always work for you. Take a look at my plan and ideas for the nation, you will like them because they were developed out of concern and hope for your welfare and for your future.”

Reacting to the news that two Nigerian communities, which have been devastated by oil spills, have filed claims against Shell at the High Court in London, Amnesty International’s Head of Business and Human Rights Mark Dummett, said:



“More than 13,500 residents from the Ogale and Bille communities in the Niger Delta have now filed claims against Shell asking that the company clean up oil spills which they say have wrecked their livelihoods, poisoned their wells, and polluted their land and water, which means they can no longer farm or fish.”



“Amnesty stands by these two communities in the Niger Delta, which have been engaged in litigation against Shell for seven years, asking that the company clean up the damage caused and compensate them for their lost livelihoods.



“Shell announced in 2021 that it plans to sell its onshore oilfields and assets in the Niger Delta after 60 years of highly profitable operations in the area. It is concerning that Shell has not explained how it plans to address the widespread and systemic pollution of Nigerian communities linked to its operations over many years before it sells up and leaves.



“This case is now proceeding to trial to determine whether Shell’s parent company in London, as well as its Nigerian subsidiary the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), is legally responsible for the harm caused to the communities in Nigeria.



Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, said:



“Had this level of contamination and pollution occurred in Europe or North America, it is hard to imagine that there would not have been swift and severe consequences and legal redress. Shell should clean up the pollution the oil has caused in these communities and compensate those whose livelihoods have been devastated and whose health has been harmed.”
