A man, his wife and four children were among the eight people all wiped out by bandits in attack on community near an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Abagena, Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, according to eyewitnesses.

The eyewitness said eight other people were seriously injured and were evacuated to a hospital for treatment.

The eyewitness said the number of the people who lost their lives in the attack may likely rise as three others who were shot by the bandits may not survive the injuries to their chests,’’ the eyewitness said.


“Some of the victims were beheaded and their heads taken away. The bushes are still being combed in search of more victims.

“A man, his wife and four children were all wiped out in the attack.

“The casualty figure may likely rise as three other persons were fatally shot and may not survive the injuries to their chests,’’ the eyewitness said.

When contacted, the police spokesman in Benue, SP Sewuese Anene confirmed the attack, adding that the casualty figure has yet to be ascertained.

Anene said the police had deployed personnel to the scene to forestall further attacks.

When you start getting involved in soccer, you hear all sorts of terminology thrown around. One of the more common words you may hear players or spectators use is the word “cap” or a phrase like “player x has multiple caps”. But many people don’t understand what a cap means in soccer.



In this article, I’m going to explain the meaning of the term “cap”.



In soccer, a cap is the term used to describe how many international games a player has participated in. The term originated in England where players were given a physical cap to commemorate their involvement in an international game. Players no longer receive a physical cap, but the term is still used.



Although this explains what the term means or refers to, it doesn’t explain why a player’s appearance in a soccer game is called a cap or where the term originated. Well, keep reading, and we’ll find out the answer to those questions as well as revealing which soccer players have gained the most caps for their respective countries.



How Does a Soccer Player Earn a Cap?

The term “cap” is only used in relation to a player’s appearances for their national team at an international level.



The world governing body for soccer, Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), only recognizes certain international games as one’s where a player can be awarded a cap. These games are regarded as International “A” games.

This means that one soccer player could play 500 games for their club team, but never make an appearance in an international game and therefore never earn a cap.



Likewise, a player could only play 200 times for their local soccer club, but make 50 appearances at an international level and therefore earn 50 caps.



Although it is worth saying that there are occasions where you will hear someone refer to the number of times a player has appeared for their club team as “caps”, but this is rare and not how the term is commonly used in soccer.



When a soccer player is selected to appear for their national team it is considered one of the highest honors in the game.



The selection says to the player, and everyone else, that this player is one of the best soccer players in the country and they are good enough to go and represent their country in an international soccer game.



They will then join up with the rest of the squad of players and prepare to play against another international team.



However, this selection in itself is not enough to earn a player a cap.



Just because they have been selected for the squad doesn’t automatically mean they receive a cap. To receive a cap, a player has to actually make an appearance for the team on the soccer field during a game.



Each player who takes part in the game at some point throughout the regulation 90 minute period will receive a cap to mark their appearance.



Not only the 11 players who start the game but every player who comes on as a substitute at some point throughout the game as well.

Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Counsel to the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has sued a self-acclaimed discipline of Kanu, Mazi Simon Ekpa for crime against humanity in the South Easterner part of Nigeria.



Defendants in the suit include: Simon Ekpa, Anibueze Juliet, Obinna Uzoaganaobi, Chukwuemeka Livingstone, and Raphael Ajaere.



The suit marked: CU/788/2022 was filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on December 12, 2022.

This is as an Igbo group based in Germany, has submitted a criminal complaint against Ekpa to the Prosecutor’s office of Southern Finland where the Ebonyi-born discipline of Kanu is based.



A copy of the complaint sighted by Vanguard read in part:” Submission of criminal complaint against Mr Simon Ekpa Njoku of Kauppaku 6, 15140 LAHTI, Finland with crimes against humanity, leading, participating in, supporting, funding and encouraging a terrorist organization currently engaged in numerous acts of terrorism in South Easterner Nigeria”.



It further read:”Previously working as a blogger and YouTuber, Simon Ekpa has since many months been propagating the restoration of Biafra over the social media channels while unleashing violence and massacre against the civilian population.



” In the last several years, some Nigerians of Igbo origin which fraudulently capitalising on the emotions people attach to Biafra, have generated enormous wealth for themselves in form of donations and other income through online traffic generated on social media by promising to restore Biafra”.



The writ of summons also read in part: “You are hereby commanded that within 30 days after the service of the writ on you, inclusive of the day of such service, you do cause an appearance to be entered for you in action at the suit of Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, and notice that in defaulting, the claimant may proceed, and judgement may be entered in your absence”.

There has been public outcry against the five-day sit-at-home order issued by Ekpa which IPOB has since dissociated itself from, alleging that Ekpa is being used by the enemies to demonise the movement and destabilize South East.



Kanu has also since disowned Ekpa saying his approach is anti-people and anti-Biafra

The idea of inanimate objects coming to life as intelligent beings has been around for a long time. The ancient Greeks had myths about robots, and Chinese and Egyptian engineers built automatons.



The beginnings of modern AI can be traced to classical philosophers' attempts to describe human thinking as a symbolic system. But the field of AI wasn't formally founded until 1956, at a conference at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire, where the term "artificial intelligence" was coined.



But achieving an artificially intelligent being wasn't so simple. After several reports criticizing progress in AI, government funding and interest in the field dropped off – a period from 1974–80 that became known as the "AI winter." The field later revived in the 1980s when the British government started funding it again in part to compete with efforts by the Japanese.



The field experienced another major winter from 1987 to 1993, coinciding with the collapse of the market for some of the early general-purpose computers, and reduced government funding.



But research began to pick up again after that, and in 1997, IBM's Deep Blue became the first computer to beat a chess champion when it defeated Russian grandmaster Garry Kasparov. And in 2011, the computer giant's question-answering system Watson won the quiz show "Jeopardy!" by beating reigning champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings.



This year, the talking computer "chatbot" Eugene Goostman captured headlines for tricking judges into thinking he was real skin-and-blood human during a Turing test, a competition developed by British mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing in 1950 as a way to assess whether a machine is intelligent.



But the accomplishment has been controversial, with artificial intelligence experts saying that only a third of the judges were fooled, and pointing out that the bot was able to dodge some questions by claiming it was an adolescent who spoke English as a second language.



Manyexperts now believe the Turing test isn't a good measure of artificial intelligence.



"The vast majority of people in AI who've thought about the matter, for the most part, think it’s a very poor test, because it only looks at external behavior," Perlis told Live Science.

The Covid virus can reside on some ready-to-eat groceries for days, UK experts have confirmed.

Scientists carried out tests for the Food Standards Agency (FSA), purposely smearing the virus on to packaging and food products, including fruit, pastries and bottled drinks.

They chose items that people might put in their mouth without cooking or washing.

The risk to consumers remains very low, they say.

Their report says it should be noted that "foods and packaging considered as part of this study were artificially inoculated with Sars-Cov-2 and therefore are not a reflection of contamination levels found on these foods at retail, and lower levels of contamination will require less time to decline to undetectable levels."

The authorities in China are seeking to end protests against COVID-19 restrictions that spread to some of its biggest cities over the weekend.

However, the village head has since gone into hiding following the terrorists’ rampage on his community. But the police are on his trail, according to Gombo Isah, spokesperson for the state police command. “On 19/10/2022 at about 0900hrs, a distress call was received that one Yahaya Danbai, ‘M’, aged 35yrs of Gobirawa village, Faskari LGA of Katsina state, was attacked by a suspected terrorist with AK 47 rifle while working in his farmland at the outskirt of the village.

“The farmer summoned courage and overpowered his assailant, disarmed him and killed the terrorist. “Subsequently, the Ward Head, instead of reporting the matter to the Police, he called one Hamisu, a notorious terrorist and leader of the killed terrorist, reported the incident to him and handed over the recovered AK-47 rifle to him. “Consequently, the terrorists’ gang leader, Hamisu, mobilised his gang, surrounded the village, brought out the gallant farmer and killed him instantly," Isah said.
