Ali Modu Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State, may be lobbying for the release of the Chad-bound cargo aircraft that was confiscated by the Nigerian military in Kano for transporting large consignment of military hardware. Premium Times reports that sources at the Aminu Kano International Airport, where the plane is currently detained, said Sheriff, who was widely accused of sponsoring Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria visited the Kano airport at about 10 p.m. on Saturday and held discussions with some officials on the possibility of releasing the aircraft. According to the source, upon arriving the airport, officials granted the former governor a secret tour of the aircraft, during which he inspected its consignments. “I was there and I saw him and two airport security officials accompanying him to inspect the plane. I saw the black helicopters and two bullet proof SUVs. I also heard him (Mr. Sheriff) say verbal directive had been given from Abuja for the release of the plane but that authorities of the airport were insisting on written directive,” the sources said. We read news everyday and see millions(early 1990s) billions (early 2000) now trillions being stolen by politicians. And these same people live and move freely in the country when in power and after. Is there no governmental constitution that penalize stealing in this country?....because I don see poor man steal indomie and he is serving in jail now! |

According to various sources from 100 to 300 Boko Haram insurgents were killed in the recent attack on Damaturu, Yobe State. It would be recalled that the state capital was hit by a ghastly attack on Monday, December 1. As a result, scores of civilians were murdered and a 24-hour curfew was imposed on the town. However, the insurgents suffered great casualties as they might have lost more than 300 of their members, Sahara Reporters provides with reference to the BBC Hausa service. The gunmen stormed Damaturu early in the morning waking the residents up with gunshots. They reportedly set ablaze schools and a police station and then headed for the government house in an attempt to seize the capital of Yobe. According to a hospital source, as the offensive was repelled, more than 100 corpses killed by the military were brought to the Specialist Hospital in Damaturu. One of the locals, Bukar Yakubu, commended the performance of the army: “They really tried even though it was not easy but they killed more than 100 and some of them were captured today.” Daily Trust says however that 150 insurgents were killed adding that the surviving militants loaded bodies of their dead colleagues into cars and drove away with them. They also put the total death toll of the battle in the area at 220 people. Another resident, Mohammed Ali, also praised the military lamenting however over the army’s defensive tactics. |

The pro-impeachment Senators and Representatives have prepared 14 impeachable allegations against President Goodluck Jonathan. The Nation reported that the lawmakers are expected to harmonise their allegations with members of the House of Representatives before sending an impeachment request to Senate President David Mark, in line with Section 143 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution. It was gathered that the pro-impeachment Senators and Representatives are to meet before the end of the week to compromise on a date. However, topping the list of the allegations is the President’s refusal to sign 120 bills into law and why he could not curb the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the north-eastern part of the country, as well as the inability to secure the release of the over 219 abducted Chibok girls . Other allegations include the inappropriate politicising of the security situation; failure to act as de facto President; $10.8billion missing from the Federation Account; squandering of N10billion private jets; and sloppiness/ failure in governance. Others comprised alleged violation of the constitution/ Oath of Office; failure to implement recommendations of panels/ committees; setting up of ill-conceived, “nebulous” groups like TAN for re-election campaign outside the Electoral Act; failure to establish and inaugurate the Nigeria Police Council; illegal deployment of Armed Forces and sowing seed of hatred and turning one part of the country against the other.
