The presidency did not disclose the purpose of the visit, but there are signs that it may be related with the Boko Haram terrorists, disturbing Nigeria since 2009. President Jonathan may need to ask his Chadian colleague about the fate of millions of dollars paid to forge a ceasefire deal with Boko Haram. President Idris Deby, warmly received Jonathan. Photo: Reuben Abati The former Governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, accused by Australian negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davis, of sponsoring Boko Haram, was conspicuously absent in President Jonathan’s delegation. |

APC spokeman said if APC were in power naija would have won 3-2. |
Atiku Abubakar has expressed his frustration with the Nigerian Federal Government regarding the way the Boko Haram Insurgency situation is being handled. The former Vice President and presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress, APC has added that Nigerians should brace up to defend themselves against the extremist Boko Haram sect. “First of all, I must confess that I am extremely frustrated with the Federal Government because this insurgency has lasted far too long,” he said. “It is more than five years now. Nigeria has got all that it takes to eradicate it within a couple of months but it has been allowed to set up for too long. I don’t believe that there is a rare capacity on the part of the Federal Government to tackle the insurgency in the Northeast.” Abubakar has also added that despite various efforts of the Government to bring an end to the insurgency and senseless deaths, the sect had continued to mount a bloody campaign against Nigerians; killing and maiming people and overrunning territories. He accused the Federal Government of diverting their manpower and effort towards less important matters and not making the protection of the people in the Northeast top priority. “Nigerians should press on government to take drastic measures to really bring the insurgency to an end,” he said. He then urged Nigerians to stand up and fight for themselves. “People must stand resolutely in the face of the attacks and not abandon their towns, women and children, ” he said. “People must not wait for soldiers to protect them. There are even instances where soldiers on ground ran away in the face of attack,” he added. It will be recalled that Atiku Abubakar recently condemned “the “senseless murder of these innocent students.” Former military Head of State (rtd) Muhammadu Buhari has also condemned the attack saying:”there was no doubt that we were going through a dark chapter in the history of our country.” |

Last week in the state, a female suicide bomber attacked the Federal College of Education, Kontagora killing herself and another student. Today’s attack, according to a security source occurred around 10am in Limawa Primary and Secondary School. Armed security personnel have been deployed to the scene as at the time of this report. |
Sunday Adebomi, a Nigerian born United States Army Captain has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to suspend every form of gentility and get down with the Boko Haram terrorists group. NAN reports that Adebomi, who hails from Ise-Ekiti in Ise/Orun local government area of Ekiti State and had been in the U.S. Army for almost two decades, gave the advice on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. He said for the President to win the war against insurgency, he has to shelve his gentility and introduce a hard stand. He said the war against insurgency could be won if the Federal Government was determined, adding that there were several ways of wiping out the sect and stopping the incessant killings. He added that if the Federal Government was ready to end Boko Haram today it will be achieved. “ Who are those in the sect that dare face the government? But unfortunately, I suspect there are some bigwigs behind these people. Mr President is being too gentle in his handling of the killings; but unfortunately, it is daily assuming dangerous dimension; gentility cannot win the war. Although gentility is not a crime but Mr President will have to be more aggressive because this is a security threat to the entire nation. Mr President will have to take a stand on the matter either to continue to tolerate the sect and leave Nigerians to be mourning every day with the several killings. Mr President should give a matching order to the military to wipe them off once and for all. Not until a strong stand is taken Nigerians may not be able to sleep with their eyes closed,” he said. The U.S army captain, who said the Nigerian military has been doing a good job in the troubled states, stated that the military is fighting unknown faces and faceless groups. He said to effectively combat the menace, the Federal government will have to first identify the cause of the problem, the root, sponsors, as well as where and how these insurgents get their weapons. According to him, the security agencies do not also understand the terrain they are fighting the war because most of them are alien to the battle fields, adding that they know nothing about the sect, and questioned how they will fight such war and win. Adebomi, who revealed that he led over 5,000 U.S. soldiers to war during the Pre-Mobilisation in 2010, expressed optimism that the sect could be wiped out. He said the sect meant nothing to the Nigeria security agencies if genuine commitment was there adding, all the military need is the Presidential directive. The Nigerian born U.S soldier urged Mr. President to read the riot act to the governors of the affected states or be made to face the wrath of the Federal government, noting that the President could also compel the governors in the states to account for each soul lost to the insurgents. |
Vanguard’s regional editor (North), Soni Daniel, has noticed a pattern in President Goodluck Jonathan’s handling of the Boko Haram issue. In his opinion article, he maintains it has become easy to predict President Jonathan’s reaction to any attack, as he would condemn the terrorists and vow to deal with them. However, it may appear that the stronger he President’s remarks are, the more ruthless the terrorists become. Mr. Daniel then lists a number of occasions when President Jonathan was forced to condemn the actions of Boko Haram after yet another attack, or promised to curb Boko Haram’s activities in his speeches on various political occasions. After the Boko Haram’s November 10th, 2014, attack on the Government Science School in Potiskum, Yobe State, when scores of young students were killed, Jonathan has promised to “bring to justice” all those responsible for the crime and “make them pay” After Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) was attacked by Boko Haram in Kaduna on July 23, 2013, President Jonathan assured that the Federal Government would continue and further intensify its ongoing efforts to effectively curb the menace of terrorism in the country. Again, he denounced the “dastardly targeting of the prominent political and religious leaders by terrorists and enemies of the nation in an odious attempt to inflame passions and exacerbate disquiet, fear, insecurity and sectional divisions in the country.” In April, hundreds of Chibok town (Borno State) schoolgirls were kidnapped from their dormitories by Boko Haram, and, on the same day, the tragic bombong in Nyanya, Abuja’s suburb, occured. In May, a number of bombs went off in various parts of Nigeria, killing and injuring hundreds. Again, President Jonathan condemned Boko Haram’s actions and assured of the Army’s and securoty forces’ ceaseless efforts to bring terrorism to a halt in Nigeria. Ever since the Boko Haram’s ‘advent’ in Nigeria, Mr. Daniel points out, President Jonathan uses pretty much same words, expressions and promises. Instead of talking about Boko Haram, the President should consider starting to work more to end the terror. |

Say no to cultism |
A student of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, arrested along with 9 other people by the Niger State police on suspicion of cultism, made a serious confession. According to Vanguard, all the 10 suspected cultists were nabbed with dangerous weapons on a tip-off. The preliminary investigation however allowed to screen out 7 people, the source said. Out of the remaining 3 people, two were FUT students. It was learnt from the police that all the 3 suspects were allegedly members of Neo-Black Movement (NBM) a.k.a . The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Olusola Amore, revealed that the alleged cultists were arrested as they tried to initiate new members. The police recovered 2 locally made pistols, 3 live ammunition 9mm caliber, 3 axes and 3 pairs of fraternity uniforms. A 500-level computer science student, who was believed to be the gang leader, said he had been initiated 4 years ago to fight injustice and oppression in FUT. Terrified over the development, the young man lamented: “I have been in this gang for four years, but I have never fought against any form of injustice because our school, FUT, Minna, is calm. My parents are in Lagos and still together but they are not aware that I am in this problem. In fact, I am regretting being in this mess.” Having confirmed that their group was “cultist”, the student advised his mates to stay away from the gang adding that he regretted joining it. “I don’t advise even my enemy to belong to this gang because there is nothing to gain from it. I personally am regretting now. Cultism is not good.” When asked whether he knew any other gang members, the suspect said, with tears trickling down his face: “I am about to graduate; so I don’t know of other members.” |
