i sort of agree with you but you are still at the mercy of the customer officer. i am all for paying full duty for your own peace of mind.
ib2015:
Each month, we know when the different plates will be coming out in high registration states like Lagos, Abuja, Kano etc so, if your car reg is reading AA ....you are old school but if its reading GGE your just a last year baby.
Guys are trained fo this. That is why if a neatly refurbished vehicle with a new plate is passing, it get stopped and let go after a closer look.
Vis a vis, that is why customs is against old numbers being used for new vehicles as the case is now.....and they are still fighting to get it reversed.
These are just fact....not a confrontation. I am only here to boost your right up.
Peace.

how do u determine when the 6 years starts to run without papers. the answer is forever
ib2015:
6 years after first registration.
Autos › Re: 0 by fanex(op): 8:23am On Apr 08, 2015
you are right. if it sounds too good to be true, then it is.
saintjoel:
Which is why you need duty papers for clarification, something tells me that you're just confused about this cotonou issh but instead of asking, you just decided to start throwing tantrums.
Autos › Re: 0 by fanex(op): 8:21am On Apr 08, 2015
There is no reason for you to be rude and completely out of order. i understand the need to defend your livelihood but not in the manner you have done. what you have done in effect is to raise suspicion.

i have written this article to the best of my knowledge and it is up to you (the expert) to respond with utmost civility.

25k charge for your services

i think you guys should run a more transparent business.

undisclosed agent fee at the point of sale.

i do business with one of those Lebanese guys that import the cars to cotonu and he told me that that the reason why prices of cars in the park are steadily going up is because of the touts and the agents. he said they can make upto 500k on a single car worth 5m without the knowledge of the buyer.
He said [b]sometimes
, to avoid trouble, they (Lebanese guys) wouldnt even negotiate directly with customer because of the touts (mostly indigenous touts).

i am all for clean business. state your bill and deliver!!! so i buy a car of 4.5m through you and all you make form it is 25k? you come count bridge for lagos?

i actually got that picture off the internet. so dont be saddened it is the age of information.

saintjoel:
It saddens me when people like you come online just because subscription is now cheap and it has given demented souls like your's a chance to rant about things they don't know. Going through your profile shows that you must be living a sad and miserable life, always antagonising people over issues only you can explain.

I'll treat your case and also use your points as reference.

1."When a Nigerian agent said to me that he will charge me N25,000 for his services to get a car and duty to paid to my door step. I wondered what the catch was.
these guy are not FRIENDS."

If any agent charged you N25,000 for his/her services,it means it's a service charge and I believe you shouldn't have issues with it,which one would you've preferred, the agent taking you into Cotonou to fleece you or having a guide and ending up with a good bargain and you compensate him/her.

2. "IN THE PARK - they add their own ontop of the cost price. 200k and above depending on the car price".

In all my years as an agent,if we make 200K per purchase, many of us will be multi - millionaires by now, what stops you from bargaining yourself and walking off if it doesn't pay you, your agent is just there to act like a body guard,he doesn't need to bargain on your behalf.

3. "DRIVING WITH ESCORT TO BORDER (security) - 20K depending on the car".

I'll have told you that your stupidity has no part two but decorum will not allow me insult you. Everyone knows that when you purchase vehicles from the park, you pay 500,000 cefa to the government and it is used to cover things like insurance, temporary plate numbers, escort services to the border (escorts are licensed drivers engaged by the govt. to drive your vehicle to the border, since you can't drive in another country and it's a way of generating employment for their citizens),where did you get your N20,000 escort fee from?

4."CUSTOM AND CLEARING - 50% of the true cost due to Nigerian Government. they pay a little change, to get your car on the database and pocket the rest of your money. duty worth 500k they pay 120k. so when you check, your car comes up"

50% of which true cost,if don't have an idea of how the system works,it'll not hurt you if you ask instead or ranting. If you've ever taken time to go through my link "https://www.nairaland.com/1572889/custom-duty-payment-made-easier",you'll see that duty payment has been illustrated to the best of our ability. Where did you get the assumption that agents just pay little change and it goes into the system?

5. "They involve a real custom officer to fill out the forms showing that you paid full duty. (scam!!)".

When you say custom officers are involved in the scams that we run (quoting you),who do you actually expect to run NCS offices at the borders or port, maybe you expect to see ghosts from your village or witches that have kept tormenting your soul to carry out day to day activities of the command.

6." NOTE: any car brought through IDIROKO either didnt pay duty at all or underpaid. IDIROKO border is a state border and not federal. if you see the office you will understand".

You're the very first person I've heard this from,so there's now state owned NCS operating at a state border and it's no more a federal customs' command. An international road that has Saamks resort (one of the first indigenous resorts in Nigeria),Winners chapel with a CG NCS squad checkpoint around it's main gate,Obasanjo farms, the Bells university of technology, companies like justrite,Indomie,IDL and so many companies. The road links Rep.of Benin to towns like Ilaro,owode,Ado-odo,otta,ipokia etc and one tends to wonder where you got your picture of a bushpath from.

7. "at the end, they can make close to 500k on a single car and leave you with the risk. your car can be impounded if full duty isnt paid".

So it's not 200K again but 500K,your weed must have been mixed with gegemu and wrapped with cement paper.

If agents make up to 500K per vehicle,it means ordinary 99 camry that's around N850,000 will be around N350,000 (purchase and duty. If I make such money,I won't be shouting on nairaland,I'll be away in U.K or dubai.

8. "Solutions--- go to cotonu yourself and speak negotiate the price of the car before you involve the agent."

Do you think we'll stop you or anyone from going to cotonoui yourself, going with an agent only lessens the risk you'll face in getting a vehicle. What you fail to note is the fact that it pays us if you go into cotonou yourself without us,so that you won't saddle us with the vehicle's wahala at the border..all we would do is leave you with your issues when your car/car parts are stolen or the engine develops faults,na dat time you go know say khaki no be leather.

9. "Insist on following the agent to the bank to the duty. You will however pay for his services. Budget a week to do a clean legal transaction. You can find a good car".

If you go with the agent to the bank, how do you know the dollar valuie he was given and what he's paying into the bank?

Going into the bank with agent isn't a fail-proof system,it's about getting a good and experienced agent and why do you need a week for transactions when you can purchase, clear through customs and even obtain plate numbers within forty-eight hours. If any duty processing goes into a week, there's something more to it,so don't mislead people.

10. "You will however pay for his services. Budget a week to do a clean legal transaction. You can find a good car".

At first you state the N25,000 was a scam and just at the end of your rants, you suddenly advice prospective customers to pay service charges, seriously I don't think you've a sound mind.
Autos › Re: 0 by fanex(op): 7:39am On Apr 08, 2015
well in practice without custom papers its impossible to ascertain when the seven years begins and ends.
saintjoel:
Custom duty papers expire after seven years, once your vehicle is with seven years,NCS can still impound or spot check your papers.
Autos › Re: 0 by fanex(op): 8:16pm On Apr 07, 2015
I beg to differ.
the only reason anyone will drive a car through idiroko is because they got something to hide.
I was just showing picture of the road.
why doesnt idiroko have the same structure and equipment as the main seme border?

So u will take me to benin look for a car for a full day or 2 then clearly it n deliver it to my house for 25k?

hassrash:
What did you no about clearing and forwarding agent?seme border cammand and idiroko border command and ilorin command are the same this duty paper is national,we run a duty clearance from idiroko border successfully non of our customers have ever complain about any harassment from customs nation wide.this picture shown here is rice or turkey which they want to smuggling to nigeria as usual nigerian government didn't legalise it so people find away of smuggling it to country
for your information customs primary assignment on Auto is to ask for the clearance of a vehicle in any of there checking point if they feel like to stop a vehicle, non nigeria custom officer wil tell you dat they dosnt recognise any of her border cammand duty paper!! Nigeria custom officer can only verify the vin on the clearance issue to your vehicle from there database to comfirm the originality of the document issue to your vehicle from the command stated on the document this can happen anywere in nigeria custom checking point if they realise the paper is fake the wil seized your car!you can also Saintjoel a.k.a gbenga he wil tell you more abt it.

Thanks.

If they suspect you, they will check your papers. Wots d point driving and panicking?
Icon4s:
But i understand they only usually check newly registered vehicles.

Never free of custom
Icon4s:
After like how long is a car usually free of customs check?
Autos › Re: 0 by fanex(op): 4:33pm On Apr 07, 2015
no lagos and cotonu duty costs the same thing. but the thieving agents pa like 150k out of the 350k you give to them and bribe their way through IDIroko route. God forbid custom decides to dig history of your papers.
Icon4s:
@op pls explain what u mean by : CUSTOM AND CLEARING: 50% Cost due to d Nigeria govt. Does it that if the cost of Clearing if it comes through Lagos is like 350K coming through cotonou would be abt 175K?
Car Talk › Re: 0 by fanex(op): 4:01pm On Apr 07, 2015
i am fairly certain the owner paid the duty but an agent chopped the money and bribed his way through the border.
GAZZUZZ:
99per of cars in the north come in thru illegal routes.
Autos › Re: 0 by fanex(op): 2:59pm On Apr 07, 2015
if you monitor them properly you will be fine. but if you buy the car hand it to them to pay your duty and deliver it to your house, you are on your own. all the wahala for just 25k i just wasnt buying it hence this research exercise.
shaddi:
How true is your claim, cos I paid full customs duty and we drove past that road with alot of check points.
