Months after Chukwuemeka Akachi, a young Nigerian poet and final year student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) committed suicide after sharing his suicide note on Facebook, another student of the institution has towed same lane by allegedly drinking “sniper”.

The student identified as Chinwendu Odoh, attempted suicide by 8:00 a.m on Saturday September 7. She was however rushed to the hospital where she is responding to treatment.

Enugu state’s police spokesperson, Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the incident and he said a full scale investigation has launched. Amaraizu said sympathisers blamed the suicide attempt on depression over an unresolved issue.

The Kogi State Governor reportedly submitted Onoja’s name to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during his trip to Abuja last week.

There is an ongoing social media debate on whether being self-employed

It all started with a tweet from @Ayo_Aroloye, The Ayo of Lagos,
claiming that being in paid employment will not provide an employee
with the financial means to afford to buy a Benz car.

“Your 9-5 won’t buy you that Benz. Put yourself out there dear,” he tweeted.

The tweet ignited a passionate debate amongst young people on social media.

In responding to the tweet, Mowgli with the handle @abdomos tweeted:
“My 9-5 can buy me Benz (not buying tho). You people should stop using

working hard and pray for God’s favour.”

The Paramount Chief of Aowin Traditional Area in the Western North Region, Beyeeman Tano Kwaw Benbuin III, has denied his involvement in the recent flogging of a young man at his palace.

He said though the incident took place in his palace at Enchi, he was not in the town on the day of the incident.

According to Beyeeman Benbuin, the incident is being hyped as an orchestration by his detractors, including his chieftaincy rivals and some police officers at Enchi, the traditional headquarters, to only give him a bad name, because of his resolve to stop illegal mining activities ongoing on in the area, which is a source of income for his detractors.

Speaking to journalists in response to the myriad of allegations seeking to implicate him as a party to the flogging incident, Beyeeman Kwaw Benbuin III said those making the allegations must check their facts again.

According to the Aowin Omanhene, he was away in the Brong Ahafo Region on the day of the incident and therefore could not have taken part in that exercise.

The minister of interior Rauf Aregbesola has thrown his weight behind technology for the faster processing of the Nigerian passport.

“With technology, it is possible to process and obtain the passport within 48 hours, if the application does not have any issues. Nigerian passport should be available within 48 hours maximum after application and at the official fee, the same goes for entry visa, resident permit, seamen license, as well as application and processing of other services”, Aregbesola said at the Comptroller General Management Retreat 2019.

“All officers of the Service must as a matter of urgency, embrace the digital tradition and be technology/computer compliant, particularly at the senior and management level.”

Application and processing of Nigerian passport can be a torturous process especially without using the help and influence of a top-ranking immigration officer or having to cut corners. The long queues at the passport office and the endless wait during processing also betrays an inefficient process.

At the retreat, the former governor of Osun State enjoined officials to discuss and choose a model and period it must take for a Nigerian to apply for and obtain the passport from the system anywhere in the world. He insisted the process has to be as fast as possible and with minimum human contact.

Few hours after DJ Arafat was laid to rest at Williamsville cemetery in Abidjan’s working-class Adjame district, his grave was desecrated by fans for social media photos.

The incident occurred just after Ivoriens paid their last tribute to the late entertainer in an overnight grand funeral concert which began on Friday August 30.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey apologized Thursday for wearing blackface decades ago, becoming the latest politician to face scrutiny over racially insensitive photos and actions from their university days.

Ivey, 74, issued the apology after a 1967 radio interview surfaced in which her now-ex-husband describes her actions at Auburn University, where she was vice president of the student government association.

“I offer my heartfelt apologies for the pain and embarrassment this causes, and I will do all I can — going forward — to help show the nation that the Alabama of today is a far cry from the Alabama of the 1960s,” Ivey said.

Ivey released a recording of the college radio interview she and then-fiance Ben LaRavia gave. In the interview, LaRavia describes Ivey as wearing coveralls and “black paint all over her face” while pretending to search for used cigars on the ground in a skit at the Baptist Student Union party. The skit was called “Cigar Butts.”

Ivey and LaRavia were married for a short time and later divorced.

Ivey said Thursday that she did not remember the skit, but “will not deny what is the obvious.”

“As such, I fully acknowledge – with genuine remorse – my participation in a skit like that back when I was a senior in college.”

“While some may attempt to excuse this as acceptable behavior for a college student during the mid-1960s, that is not who I am today, and it is not what my Administration represents all these years later.”

Ivey is the latest politician to face scrutiny over wearing blackface decades ago.

A racist photo in the medical school yearbook of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam led to calls for his resignation. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring also acknowledged wearing blackface in college.

Alabama Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton, who is African American, said he appreciated Ivey “owning” the incident and apologizing for it.

“While I think this is something that is disturbing in the African American community, for someone to make a mockery of us and our culture, I appreciate her for at least owning it and coming out publically with it,” Singleton said. He said Ivey called him Thursday morning to personally apologize.

Three policemen identified as Uzor Emmanuel (34), Akharamen Michael (31) and Jimoh Halilu (27) have been dismissed from service and also remanded in prison custody for allegedly stealing two AK 47 belonging to the Police Force.
