The chairman, National Population Commission (NpopC), Chief Eze Duruiheoma, has disclosed that over N222.9 billion will be required to ensure a successful conduct of the 2018 census.

Officials of the Iju Police Division, Lagos State Police Command have arrested a trader, one Mallam Isiaka, for allegedly raping a primary 1 pupil in the Iju area of the state.

The victim, a nine-year-old boy who resides with his family on Coker Alhaja Street, Old Akute Road, Iju, was said to have complained about pains in the anus to his mother.

He said the 34-year-old trader penetrated his anus different times when his mother sent him to buy items from him.


The victim’s mother thereafter reported the matter at the police station and Isiaka was arrested and detained at the weekend.

Subsequently, the unidentified boy was taken to the Mirabel Centre for tests which revealed that the boy engaged in anal sex. Further tests to ascertain infections were carried out on him.

According to The Punch, the victim also told his mother that he could not open up on the incident because the suspect allegedly threatened that he would die if he reported anything to his parents.

The victim’s neighbour, one Olawumi, said the parents first became suspicious when their son was sent on an errand and he came back with his pants soaked after staying longer than usual.

The Nigerian Union in South Africa said on Saturday that Nigerians lost more than 4.6 million Rand (N84 million) to xenophobic attacks.


The President of Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on phone from Pretoria, South Africa, that the losses were initially put at 1.2 million Rand ( N21 million).

“The Nigerian Union in South Africa has completed documentation of the losses suffered by Nigerians to xenophobic attacks.

“Nigerians lost more than 4.6 million Rand or N84 million during the attacks.

“A mechanic workshop owned by a Nigerian in Jeppes, near Johannesburg, for example was completely burnt with 11 cars inside it.

“The loss is put at more than one million Rand or N20 million,” he said.



Anyene said the Union had compiled the losses and given the list to Nigeria’s Consul-General to South Africa.

He said Nigerian victims of the attacks needed urgent assistance to re-settle because many had lost their means of livelihood.

“The Consul-General has travelled to Nigeria and we appeal to the Federal Government to do something urgent to assist Nigerians affected by the attacks.

The Ondo State Government ‎says the production of locally made gin otherwise known as “Ogogoro” in now prohibited in the state

Dr. DayoAdeyanju, the Commissioner for Health, said this at the weekend, while addressing journalists, in Akure, the capital city. ‎

He ‎said the ministry had reviewed strategies and embarked on sensitisation to let people know that locally-made gin was prohibited.

“We appeal to the general public to desist from drinking the gin until we are able to identify the source of contamination or find out how the methanol got into the drinks”, he said. ‎

He noted that until the state government got to the root of how the locally made gin was contaminated, ‎production and consumption remained banned.‎

“Until we are able to get the source of contamination or how the methanol get into the ‘Ogogoro’, it would remain banned in the entire state, not even only in Irele.

“‎We don’t know the extent of the contamination. We just need this sacrifice now, so that Ondo State would be free from this deadly disease,”Adeyanju said.

‎He disclosed that about thirty-three persons were officially affected by the sudden outbreak of the strange ailment, adding that ten people were still receiving treatment in a hospital. ‎

He added that two of them had already regained their sight, and are back to their respective homes. ‎‎

Adeyanju noted that toxicology test had already shown, through symptoms from victims of the sudden outbreak, that they were suffering from a ‎methanol contamination.

He said: “Investigations did not reveal symptoms of Ebola,” adding that the state government had moved into the area to curtail spread of the strange disease.

A jilted girl identified as Egoli (surname withheld) in Asaba Community Delta State has allegedly committed suicide three years after she introduced her fiancé to her parents.

According to Leadershipng, the incident, which occurred on Monday, swept through the community when the news of her death hit the area.

It was gathered that Ego, as she is fondly called, allegedly committed suicide when it became clear to her that her fiancé had wedded another girl in Lagos.

Police public relations officer in the State, DSP Celestina kalu who confirmed the incident , said the
girl, a graduate of economics from the university of Benin, had been waiting for her man since three years in Asaba.

She said that the girl was found dead in her room the following day after she and her parents had retired to sleep, with particles of drugs found on her. Her corpse has been sent for autopsy.

Family members who spoke to their correspondent, one of them, Mrs. Mabel Egbeide, said she had complained bitterly about the story of the fiancé marrying another girl in Lagos but her fears were dismissed before she took her life.

Sources said Ego's fiancé, a Lagos based businessman, was relieved of his job in Lagos after he had carried out introduction of the girl before her parents and returned to Lagos where he had stayed all these while before allegedly taking another girl for a wife.
