pls can someone here direct me to where I can get Animal care feed in Ilorin?
I think the best is for you to go to anywhere they sell other feeds, they can direct you because they know themselves.

Has any one experienced piglets bitten by cats. just came this morning and saw my three days piglets dead, and it was reported that cats bit them last night. I am afraid that it may still repeat again. I don't know how to get ride of them.
I have not experienced such but I think it must be a wild cat. You need to be vigilant and strategize on how to get rid of the cat or protect the piglets from being accessible to any predators. I know it can't do that with grown ones.

Hello guys! I want to raise 1000 broiler for Xmas. Is there market for it please?
There's market. It depends on your marketing strategy and your location.

The only advice that I have is that if you have not done it before, 1000 birds is much for someone who has not raised 50 or 100 birds before.

I don't know if anyone here have read my previous posts especially the one I made mention of breeds. You guys should be careful of what you pay so much money for as pure breed. Note: I'm not speaking against anyone, I'm merely putting my two cents in for those that may find it useful. If you're wise enough to know how to make money is this current economy, then you should be wise enough to know how to spend it wisely.
You're very right. There are many computer farmers who just intend to make money from people without conscience judging them. They always advertise pure breed at exorbitant rate to new farmers.
I always tell people to apply business sense even as you're a farmer. Without good business sense, you will still run at loss.
Check how much you have spent in stocking your farm, how much you have used on feeding, how much you have used for drugs, how much you have spent on manpower and how much you're able to sell your pigs; deduct all your expenses from the income and see if you have made profit.
Don't be deceived by people. Do your practical well. Start from weaners as mush as your money can feed if possible and grow from there
God bless pig farmers.

I think it is necessary not to be dogmatic friends. If you know only one approach to something, you may not have an exit point in the day of trouble. Let's try to learn from different things even if you don't need it at the moment. Just put put the in your archive.

But I think as a farmer who wants to excel, there's nothing that stops us from making it a practical by using like 5 of our birds and with that you can be able to talk boldly on a subject matter. Let's research more and make progress and not be on the same spot or counter suggestions without practical facts.
Thanks

They will, with gud management & quality feed. In 8 wks, u shld get a male line to around 2.5kg, which can be sold in that range, depending on who u are selling to.
Thanks. But please how can I get market for others if I can't sell all during December festive period. I don't want to be a festive period farmer; I want a continuous process even after the festivities

Please! If someone breeds broilers for 8-10 weeks, does it mean that they won't attain good market sizes. I mean to be sold at the rate of #3500
Please I need your response.

Pls I have plots of land which I can carve out 3plots to use for pig farming. It's location is ibeju lekki..how can I safe guard the pigs to avoid theft .? And how many can I start with ?
Pls enlighten me.
If you have the capacity, it's good to fence it may engage the service of a night watch or you employ an attendant who can sleep in the farm.

There's no limit to the number you can start with. It depends on your available resources.

Though am aware this post is a bit old but can anyone help.

How much is a kilo of live pig?

How much can one sell a pig of 90 kilo or 100 kilo ..

I need a response urgently please.... Need to know how to regulate the price of pig....am a new babe....

How do one determine the price to sell his pigs

Want to know how price of pigs are determine ..learnt its by weight but how do you determine the exact monetary figure... Someone should please help

Want to know this so I don't cheat the buyers or get cheated by the buyers.

Will really appreciate any response....God bless
If you read through the previous posts, I think the questions you asked have been severally answered even recently.

In Lagos and part of Ogun state the price per kg is between 450-470/kg.
If your pig weighs 60kg, you're to multiply the weight by the price per kg i.e. 60x460. The answer you get is the money you are going to collect.

I also want you to know that price varies. What they sell in Lagos is different from some other states; some states sell higher than Lagos so you need to confirm the prices for those locations.

Consequently, the buyers are very smart when it comes to buying. Their scale might be reading less and sometimes they may edge the animal or the scale so as to have a reduced weight. So you need to be watchful while selling because little interference with the animal or scale can cut a lot of kg which is a loss for the farmer.
In summary, use an accurate scale and be watchful.
This is just a little I can say for now. God bless the farmers.

I like how you have been encouraging other people to wake up. Agriculture is a profession that will continually be lucrative. There are opportunities passing by on daily basis but only few people see them.
Some professional contributions may still come up later. Have a nice time all.

Iam4realthough:
For all the newbies stumbling on this thread like myself & wishing to venture into piggery, my advice is go start reading from page 1. Ask your questions when you get to the last page. A big thanks to all the Ogas that have not been stingy with their knowledge & experience over the years - Lagbaja, Dejia, Femu, Ops and more recently dynamix101, adeyinkapiggs, FashPet, tayo52 and sinaakinsanya, may God keep blessing you all.
Oga Lagbaja posted this feed formulation 3yrs ago & costed it at about N30 per kilo.

50% of cassava ( I buy them Fresh, break them into chips, dry and store them)
30% pkc
10% GNC( groundnut meal) or SBM (soyabean meal)
6% blood meal
2.5%. Oyster shell/bone meal/ lime stone
0.25% lysine
0.25% methionine
0.5% salt
0.25% premix
0.03% (3g per 1kg bakers Yeast) ( probiotic)
0.1% H-Plus from Animalcare

Now to my questions

1- would this formulation still give optimal growth today?

2- If costed today, how much would it be per kilo

3- Would this formulation be good for exotic weaners ?

4- Can this formulation serve through all the stages till they are ready to be served ?

There is still a million questions to go but I'll look forward to your honest response or if there is a better more cost effective formulation for optimal growth pls point me in the right direction
The formulation will work for exotic breed. I'll later get back to you on the costing per kg because it's when farm is small that one takes costing of feeds per kg but it's a good thing to have the records intact and do proper calculation

Pigs are of different stages and they're fed with different formulations based on the stages. Also also one must consider the purposes. If you're raising for slaughter, your whole mind concentration would be on maximum weight that will fetch you enough money.
Many farmers are lazy to have different formulations for their pigs which is not too good. Let me give this instance. If you feed your farrowing pigs with too much protein and fat, they get so much weight and fat which can be dangerous to the piglets when they Farrow. Some fat ones sleep on the piglets and won't stand unless someone intervenes and some piglets die because of this while some get handicapped.
Therefore, you need watch the concentrate and the quantity of feed you give at each stage

Hmmmm........ Buying pregnant sows is a no-no...... If experienced farmers can never buy it, what justification does a newbie have to do so?? It is no easy feat nuturing newborns..... I can tell you because once your sow farrows, you must be at alert esp during the first week and you must go there daily to ensure they dont have complications or life threatening issues like the common stooling which kills them off anyhow.

Also it takes an average of 8-10months for a weaner to attain market weight. The pregnant sow will farrow in 2 months or less and they suckle for 2 months before they are weaned making it a total of 4 months..... Your weaners just turned growers.
Sometimes what is difficult for one person might be easier for another person.

Consequently, the gestation period of pig is always 113-115 days, which is almost 4 months before the nursing period.

Also, 8 months is too much to reach market size for a well fed pig. Though market size varies.

Good market sizes for pigs starts from 50kg upwards
