You must mean rooting. Pigs are not destructive. On the contrary they are very curious and intelligent animals. You have to make sure that their houses(pens/rooms) are not too high and the gates are iron but not fully covered so that they can always see what is going on.
Now, sometimes you have to observe your animal and study the times that it is displaying this kind of behaviour. It might just be that it's unsettled or hungry.

My pig pen is almost ready, am a beginners, advice please. Do I go for weaner or pregnant ones, which one will be best for me to start with, am just new , pls advice. Am based in PH.
It depends on the level of your experience and training my brother.
You could have gotten both if you have resources to acquire them. Weaners will give you experience on how to nurture piglets from the scratch and to prove all the information you knew based on breeds, feeds/feeding patterns. Also having pregnant sows will also afford you an opportunity to know how to take care of a pregnant sows and nurture till delivery; witnessing the delivery and nurturing the piglets from the first day.
Consequently in business wise, the weaners you acquired would have been reaching their market sizes at the time the newly farrowed would be reaching 8 weeks, thereby you can sell and use the money to nurture the farrowed piglets to their market size also.

Let me stop here for contributions from others.

You went to Okearo and saw?? In Okearo, there is a farmer there who has a mighty boar that is 7years old and weighs over 300kg with no fat; its true but let me shed some light on issues you may not be aware of:

1. Most farmers who drive the jeeps are the ones eating off newbies and oppressing them to eventual frustration through their terrible antics.
2. Google and read up well on the subject of pig rearing. Even whites will tell you the truth that all pigs start and grow the same. Its when they get to a particular age that the exotic breeds start to shoot up faster. I have asked that why wait for more months when you can sell off your animals, make money and walk away??
3. I have visited farms bro, farms with updated biosecurity huh They sold in-sow to somebody for 65k but that exotic pig gave birth to 4 piglets. Mine average 9 and they are not exotic, so why waste my time??
4. Its criminal and wicked to sell weaners for 12k not to talk of the ridiculous amounts people quote around. My mom visited Songhai last year and got their contact number. Are you aware that they have a farm in Nigeria?? As at late last year, a whole Songhai had Camborough weaners of the purest breed for guess how much........ 8k. So what are you saying??
5. Before your pig can weigh those ridiculous weights you are dropping, how old are they, be sincere?? The man who has an over 300kg pig has kept tht animal for over 6 years. I went there with a fellow nairalander in February and they use those big old animals to scam people to buy fake weaners at exorbitant costs.
6. Aside our Camborough, we have another boar, a landrace that we acquired for 4,500 then when weaners were 3000. Its first crossing produced 9 piglets. Isnt that one of the aims of exotic breeds?? If my local female can give me 12 and an expensive exotic gives me 10, why waste my time?? Why not continue crossbreeding till i get a perfect lineage?? If you buy an animal for 15k and fatten, how much will you sell?? At least i have dropped a guideline of the costs it will take to bring them up to maturity....... Its a business and once its profitable, remove sentiments and do the right thing.
People just need to understand the business aspect of piggery instead of breeding. You can still ride jeep easily if someone can add up business knowledge with the farming knowledge. Tayo is a good farmer but needs more business orientation. I won't say more than that for now.
God bless the farmers.

In this, i pitch my tent with you. Because of the percieved profitability of the piggery industry, a lot of people have decided to be wicked and inconsiderate to others. Apart from those who have no farms and pose as farmers, real farmers too are a bottleneck and most of them are as greedy as their pigs. How can a farmer sell exotic animals for 15k? You see all kinds of wickedness going on, farmers trying to exploit newbies and they end up running many of them out of the business.
I will continually say this: breeds are just long talk except you want to go into breeding; then i advise you buy an exotic boar not sow. God bless you for this post
God bless you too in Jesus' name. Let's share contact please. 08037206924

AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by FashPet(m): 2:47pm On Apr 01, 2017
I really appreciate many of the farmers who have been helping other farmers out in providing relevant information for all and sundry to be successful farmers.
But it is paramount to also know that you must be careful in dealing with people especially when it comes to money matter because where good people abound, there's all possibility of having some bad eggs who will like to take advantage of young /new farmers.
Some will over rate the prices of their animals and advertise it as exotic breeds whereas it's not the truth.
This platform is a platform for young to learn/grow and come back with testimonies. Consequently, it's a platform to share relevant experiences and not to make them fear by telling them exorbitant rates when such an individual is just looking for a way of survival and profit.
Some people want to be using it as an avenue to shipwreck others whereas such people may not have any farm anywhere They may do that by giving outrageous prices for weaners, gilt e.t.c which is not supposed to be.
My advice to everyone is that exotic breeds are good but if proper nutrition is not observed, the animal won't still grow or reach the market weight at the actual time. Therefore, let your focus be focused more on how you can feed your animals well with balanced diet and not getting weaners claimed to be exotic for 15k, 20k, 30k.
Get the ones of 3k, 4k and feed them with correct diet and you will see the result. You can do the test by getting both exotic and feed them with the same feeds and you will see practically for yourself.

I am talking from experience as a practical farmer. This is open for criticism by some people who might have been offended and other good farmers in the house.

Have a great day!

As a matter of fact if someone will really learn and acquire knowledge and relevant experiences in piggery, it is quite better to start with crossed or pregnant sows or such an individual mate the gilts personally.

A new farmer will learn the behavior of the animals while pregnant and at delivery period.

Also, he can also benefit from knowing how to take care of piglets and weaners and their behaviors.
There's nothing like starting from the beginning because such an individual will really have bulk of experience in a short while which will make him succeed.
It is imperative to know that in piggery, "the more the experience, the more the success rate and stories".

Have an amazing day all farmers.

Your post isnt clear. Are you saying farmers dont use maize and cassava??

I dont know any pig farmer who doesnt make use of soyabeans, maize and pkc in his compounded feed and who doesnt supplement with brewery waste and cassava peels to make up for the necessary daily feed weight intake of his animals
@dynamix101. That's what I meant. I know some farmers who only make use of pkc as their feed whereas pkc is dominated with high level of protein which can surely be helpful in animal growth but to have balanced diet in feeding I think it's necessary to include other classes of food like carbohydrates sources, vitamin sources and others.
That's why I want other professionals to react to this just to share views.

Hello house! There's an important matter which. I want other professionals to react upon.
I want us to discuss the use of only Pkc for feeding our pigs ; neglecting other known good feeds which are also sources of good nutrients to the animal. Like Cassava and maize which known to be good sources of carbohydrates, brewery waste, soya beans and so on.
Please let's share our views.

It depends on the kind of farm you want to operate. But I view that you want to nurse your pigs from the starting point. Based on that, your decision to get pregnant sows is good but for a new farmer you will require experts attention while farrowing and nursing the piglets so as to prevent casualties and for professional pieces of advice.

The advantage of your decision is that you will soon have your own piglets instead of buying and your farrowing ones will also continue to do that twice or 2 1/2 annually.

Agriculture has ever been a business with high return. Though it's not for lazy people.
Breeds are also important in every livestock. No matter the diet, you can't compare broiler chicks to Cockerels or layers or local breeds. They all have where they can thrive and the kind of feeds applicable to each of them.

Both feeding diet and breed are very important in order to have excellent productivity.

Thank you
