[b]ATTENTION: OPINION PAGE EDITOR KUDOS TO BAMIRO, U.I V.C OVER REFORM SUNDAY SAANU One of the best things that the led could do to the leaders, particularly leaders that are “leading right” is to publicly commend them as such public commendation could propel the praised leaders into wanting to do more. Therefore, it is not out of place to publicly identify the good any leader has done and appreciate because sometimes, when leaders do wrong, we would not forget, but when they do what is right, we hardly remember! It is against this background that I am compelled to praise the efforts of the vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan (U.I) Prof. Olufemi Bamiro whose brand of reform is gradually turning the premier University into a paradise. When Prof. Bamiro took over nobody envisaged the kind of a radical reform sweeping across the length and breath of the sprawling ancient campus. Prof. Bamiro began with the massive road identification project across the campus, putting sign boards in all the roads within the campus. He later moved to the road rehabilitation. Today in U.I, all the roads which were hitherto unmotorable, have been rehabilitated, thereby making driving round much easier. As if that was a child’s play, Prof. Bamiro picked up the antiquated Trenchard Hall, which has always been serving as a convocation hall. The professor of Technology gave the hall a modern touch – a befitting face life. Today, Trenchard Hall is a beautiful bride in U.I as it is fully air-conditioned with a stand-by generating set. What about various toilets ? In the past, one had to cover one’s nose while using the toilets as terrible stench around could precipitate vomiting, but today in U.I, the situation has changed for the better, the toilets are well managed and one could spend more than necessary time there. Trust students, they over-stay in toilets for the sake of writing and reading graffiti, courtesy their V.C’s reform agenda. One can go on enumerating the achievements of Prof. Bamiro in U.I. within a short time in office. Indeed, his achievements are eloquent testimonies to his visionary and purposeful leadership. His critics have continued to wonder where he is getting money to prosecute all these laudable programmes. The point is, Prof. Bamiro is a highly resourceful person. He does not believe in storm without rain, neither does he tolerate motion without movement. Students now refer to him as “an Action V.C” because whenever they complaint to his hearing, he personally sees to their needs. Some call him “Mr. Transformation” following how he is fast changing bad situations to good. If only Nigeria leaders, at all levels, can be as pragmatic and sincere as this U.I. V.C, how beautiful would Nigeria be? Sunday Saanu sundaysaanu@yahoo.com University of Ibadan Dept. of Communication and Language Arts BAMIRO, U.I V.C COMMENDED OVER CAMPUS REFORM SUNDAY SAANU University of Ibadan (U.I) vice – chancellor, Professor Olufemi Bamiro has been commended for his various initiatives leading to the tremendous physical transformation and renovation of ageing intrastructive on the campus. The commendation, coming from both lecturers and non-teaching staff of the community was as a result of unbelievable achievements of the vice-chancellor since he resumed office as many areas which were hitherto eyesorer on campus have been turned around. For instance, students can now confidently walk into any of their toilets and ease themselves comfortably, unlike in the past when such places were users unfriendly. This feat seems insignificant compared to the renovation of all road networks across the campus which has now made driving around a pleasurable experience. Leading the commendation, Prof. Festus Adesanoye of the department of communication and language Arts (CLA) said if Prof. Bamiro could maintain the tempo of his developmental efforts, the University will soon become a paradise, thereby regaining the past along as a true citated of learning. According to Prof. Adesonoye at a part – graduate lecture “this vice-chancellor is really making life more comfortable with all the renovation going on across the University campus. We couldn’t even believe that what Prof. Bamiro is doing now is possible again because the level of decay and neglect is enormour”. “Indeed, Prof. Bamiro is a visionary leader, a prudent manager and a Godly person who believed that the right thing must be done to get the right result. I can say the University of Ibadan is very luck to have had him as vice-chancellor at this point” Prof. Adesanoye said. Echoing similar sentiment, a pensioner of the institution, Mr. Isola Bamidele asserted that it was God who sent Prof. Bamiro to the University, adding” I have not seen any vice-chancellor that so much caters for the pensioners as Prof. Bamiro who sensitised us to agitate for our right. Since then, things have been fine with us” Mr Bamidele said. In her own assessment, Mrs Bolaji Ojo of the Bursary department described Prof. Bamiro as a great leader with an uncommon vision who has transformed U.I better than he met it”. He is really doing well” she added. According to Mrs Ojo “look at the Trenchard Hall, fully air-conditioned, before Prof. Bamiro came, that palce was not conducive for any large gathering, if you go there now, you don’t want to come out. Prof. Bamiro has turned it to an international center”. “We pray that God should continue to give him wisdom and strength because he is really doing well” Stressed Mrs Ojo. CELEBRATING You.I AT 60 Sunday Saanu. The premier University in Nigeria, the University of Ibadan, admirably referred to as the “first and the best” is 60 years old this year, having being established in 1948. And to mark the diamond occasion, a year - long celebration was flagged off by the former Pro- Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Mr. Gamaliel Onosode during the 59th convocation ceremony. The anniversary has since begun. It will come to a glorious crescendo on Nov. 17th year. It must not therefore surprise anyone hence forth, whenever one activity or the other is carried out and publicized as part of the 60th anniversary. The mood in the sprawling campus is already depicting commemoration: repairing and repainting, re- fixing and replacing damaged infrastructural facilities – all in preparation for the grand celebration of 60 years of academic excellence. It is worth it! Yes, drums should be rolled out, glasses must be clunk, fireworks must be displayed and the fatted calf must be killed. The university which started out with the 104 foundation students at the old site previously used by the 56th Military General Hospital, about eight kilometers away from the present permanent site, is today, globally recognized as one of the best universities in Africa and the flagship of post graduate studies in Nigeria. The University of Ibadan which has produced the movers and shakers of the society has remained a lighting rod for all other universities across the country with the You.I products illuminating dark places of the world. The You.I’s achievements over the years are too formidable and considerable to be contested, yet indispensable in the scholastic enterprise. The truth is that this great institution shall continue to live as long as there are those who bear the stamp of its influence. They are everywhere, in and outside the country, research has shown that there is no country in the world without the You.I products holding one sensitive position or the other. As elder talks with an authority of experience, so is You.I pontificating as a result of its pedigree. Still, effluxion of time has not eroded the prevailing culture of intellectual osmosis peculiar to the institution. Who will say the university that produces the Wole Soyinkas of this world, the Chinua Achebes among numerous notable world figures does not deserve fanfaronade at 60? The clues to You.I’s greatness are every where, begging to be interpreted! The gigantic clock mounted against the tower of the university which is quite visible at the entrance of the institution has not stopped to chime, and it is a metaphorical expression of the fact that the impression of academic grandeur known with the school is too exotic to fade! As the University is celebrating its diamond anniversary, perhaps, the occasion will provide an opportunity to reflect on the achievements, prospects and problems confronting the institution at 60. One would hope that the occasion will provide a confluence where the university needs and the willingness of the stakeholders, including the government, society and the alumni will meet to solve the problems confront the University. Undoubtedly, the needs are legion, but let us just examine only one, which requires urgent and pragmatic approach to tackle. At 60, a major challenge confronting the university is energy crisis. Although, the entire Nigerian society is trapped in this national disgrace, it is just quite utopian that a university of Ibadan status will make a private arrangement to generate its own electricity for its own benefit. Power outage is a terrible problem in You.I. it frustrates academic activities and dampens the morale of both the students and their lecturers. Recently, the students were forced to stage a peaceful demonstration against power outage when for three days, there was no light to cook and pump water for use. It took the legendary wisdom of the Vice – Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro to douse the tension. At 60, is it not possible for the ex- students of this great institution to get together, donate money and build an independent power generation project for You.I? It is possible; You.I has more than enough successful alumni to do it. In the spirit of celebration and in tandem with the principle of corporate social responsibility, let successful former students of You.I step forward, put resources together and bail out their famous institution. out of this energy conundrum. Let something tangible be done for You.I on this occasion. In the last couple of years, the University has been blessed with good leadership. And those who mounted leadership seat have been doing their best to reposition the university. The immediate past administration of Prof. Ayodele Falase laid a solid foundation for further development by the current players. Falase’s indelible achievements in terms of infrastructural renovations have found synergy in the administrative acumen of the current vice- chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro. The V.C who has effectively consolidated Falase’s achievements has taken the university to the next level with his own transformational philosophy. Prof. Bamiro is welcoming change instead of dreading change. He has come up with the idea of internationalization of You.I. The Professor of technology who is now been admirably called “Mr. Transformation” is putting in place hybridization of modern technology with harmonization of human capacities, with a view to further reposition the institution. His efforts can be more meaningful with adequate support from the government and other stakeholders. Buoyed by an uncanny doggedness to transform the university, Prof. Bamiro along, with his able team members including Prof. Adigun Agbaje, Vice- Chancellor (academic), Prof. A. Ogunkunle, Vice – Chancellor (administration) and the indefatigable Registrar, Mrs Omotayo Ikotun, has indeed been able to make a mincemeat of the uphill task of providing clear direction with missionary zeal. This 60th anniversary celebration therefore provides a beautiful opportunity for all lovers of education to come and support this university with endowment. It has been said that government alone cannot finance education. People must therefore come from far and near to support You.I. This writer has said it before that the You.I is a national patrimony, which must be jealously protected by all Nigerians. This institution must not be allowed to grow effete by poor funding. Come and donate to You.I as every action of our lives touches some chord that will vibrate in eternity. The only way one can perpetuate his name in history is by a way of endowment to institutions such as You.I. Celebration has been done in the past but this year’s diamond anniversary will be marked with loudest ovation. As said earlier, You.I has every reason to celebrate. For the fact that values have not evaporated calls for celebration. For the fact that You.I has not become a historical relic calls for commemoration. While we salute those who intellectualized it into existence, we ought to sound the trumpet for this national heritage. There fore, join us at this festive occasion as we roll out the red carpet, clash the cymbals and wave the banners at this 60th year of intellectual and scholastic celebration. We fling wide the grates. By-Sunday Saanu Department of communication and Language Arts. University of Ibadan. e-mail – Sunday Saanu@yahoo.com |
You.I. CRISIS MANAGEMENT: BAMIRO’S EXAMPLE Sunday Saanu Recently, the relative peace that has been pervading the University of Ibadan (You.I) was almost shattered as the angry students abandoned their classrooms and blocked the main entrance to the Premier University, thereby disrupting the normal academic and economic activities on campus. Why? They were protesting against power outage on campus. For three consecutive days, they had no electricity to cook, to pump water, to type their assignments and to listen to news and music. That was not all. They were also said to be protesting against the “dead student unionism in You.I.”. According to them, the last time they had something called student unionism was about six years ago. The students therefore felt they had enough justifications to come out and agitate. Trust students, before you could say Jack Robinson, they had mobilized themselves, placards were carried, proverbial songs composed, road blocked and every other activity was abruptly halted. Crisis, of course, conflict. Conflict occurs when there are two incompatible demands or goals. Conflict scholars including Kreitner and Coser have defined conflict as a struggle over values or claims to status, power and scare resources, in which the aims of the conflicting parties are not only to gain the desired values but also to neutralize, injure or eliminate their rivals. Such conflicts may take place between individuals, groups or organization. The point is conflict or crisis is natural in as much as we have insatiable demands. Conflict is inescapable from the human race. Since, crisis and conflict are natural phenomena, the next ideal preoccupation will be how do we resolve, or dissolve or solve crisis? This is where the example of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro is not only relevant but quite salutary and commendable. Observers had thought the V.C would, in the vortex of the students’ demonstration, hurriedly lock his door and find an exist to run away! No, Prof. Bamiro said you would not solve a problem by running away from it. Rather, the Professor of Technology came out of his cozy office to address the rampaging students. He did not hid away and send representative to the students. He came out, and immediately, the students saw their Vice-Chancellor, tension was a little abated Prof. Bamiro asked for the students’ problems and after listening to them. He addressed the issues raised. According to him “the power outage was not the making of the University but that of the Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria (PHCN) which had not supplied the campus with energy in the last five days. The University has since been run by generator at the exorbitant cost”. On the students unionism, the V.C. explained that the Unionism would be resuscitated as soon as the case in court which was initiated by the past leaders is trashed out. No sooner the V.C. concluded his address than the students returned to their hostels and classrooms, thereby ending the crisis that could have paralyzed the University. However, there are many lessons in this You.I. issue for Nigerians. As demonstrated by the students, Nigerians should develop and sustain the culture of peaceful agitation whenever there is discomfort. We have been so complacent in this country. This on-going national crisis in energy sector is enough to provoke a national agitation for improved energy supply. Again, our leaders should be courageous to come out to address our national problems. This is where I want President Umaru Yar’Adua to come out of the Aso Rock cocoon. The President has not been visible enough. He should talk to Nigerians, if possible, replicate the presidential media chart. Prof. Bamiro has shown a good example of how a crisis should be addressed. Since his appointment as the Vice-chancellor of the University, the last students’ demonstration would be one occasion that provided him an opportunity to show his administrative competence publicly. And, he did quite well. His approach has been fantastic in You.I. He has adopted suitable target for maximum impact as his strategy. Prof. Bamiro has not disappointed anyone as his achievements so far testify to his intellectual prowess. Roads within the campus have been rehabilitated and reconstructed. His new vision of internationalization of the institution is indeed yielding positive result as both the students and the staff members now refer to him as “Mr. Transformation”. Only a few people using tinted glass will not see the gigantic turn-around project that the Vice-Chancellor is executing. He is really expanding the frontiers of knowledge through the provision of excellent conditions for learning and research. No fewer than 60 abandoned babies were found at different locations in Lagos State in the last one year, the Special Adviser to the state governor on Youth, Sports and Social Development, Dr. Dolapo Badru, has said. He said this at the ministerial news conference to mark one year of Governor Babatunde Fashola in office at the weekend. According to him, many of the babies were below three years of age with many of them picked up from the streets and refuse dumps, adding, “One of these children was the abandoned baby girl found in a canal around Ifako, Ogba in December 2007 by a good Nigerian. “The government has since taken the baby to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja for medical treatment while others had since been referred to the state motherless babies’ homes for proper care,” he said. As parts of its efforts to give the abandoned babies love and care, the Special Adviser said the government gave some of the children out to some parents on adoption. He noted that 117 children had been adopted by interested members of the society and that the state government had generated over N8 million as revenue on adoption. |
