Nairaland GeneralFire Guts Shops In Ogba by fd4all234(op): 5:22pm On Jun 09, 2011
The fire which was put out by the officials was said to have started when a gas cylinder exploded at a shop beside the bank.

It did not affect the bank because of the intervention by the fire service officials, but it completely razed down the shops in the building beside it and a commuter bus with plate number XR 107 LSD said to have been purchased only few weeks ago.

Eyewitnesses at the scene of the incident, who narrated how the fire began, told P.M.NEWS that the fire started from one of the shops in the house which the shop owner uses for filling gas cylinders.

According to them, the owner of the shop, whose name was not given, was filling a cylinder when his neighbour, a woman who has a restaurant beside him was passing with heated charcoal.

“Immediately the woman got near the place the man was filling the gas, the thing exploded causing serious fire. The man and the woman were seriously affected and have been rushed to a hospital.

An aged man, who charges vehicle batteries in his shop at the building, could not bring out any valuable thing as the entire shop was completely destroyed.

Though the man could not speak when P.M.NEWS approached him, a friend who came with him to the shop said he was at home when he received a call that his shop was on fire.

He said he did not come to shop early because of the environmental sanitation exercise that takes place every Thursday.

“You can see that everything in the shop was completely destroyed. Apart from his machine which he uses for his work, the batteries in the shop were not his. Where will this old man start from?” His friend asked.

Though the landlord of the building was not around when P.M.NEWS visited the scene of the incident, it was learnt that residents of the building had complained to the landlord about the danger of having a gas re-fill shop located within a residential area.

According to one of the residents, who did not want her name mentioned, “whenever we remind the landlord of the danger involved, he would tell us to quit if we are not comfortable. All he cares about is his house rent and once that is paid, everyone was on his own.”

She said she was still in her room when she heard a loud sound.

“I thought it was a bomb explosion and all I could do was think of how to escape with only my boxers on me. When I got outside, I saw the huge fire with people shouting and I was told how it happened,” she said, adding that only two persons were injured.
Nairaland GeneralSouth-west Leaders Reject Tambuwal As Speaker by fd4all234(op): 12:29pm On Jun 09, 2011
Some Yoruba Leaders who are members of the ruling People’s Democratic Party,
PDP have rejected the election of Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as the speaker of
the Nigerian House of Representatives.

The leaders who are operating under the aegis of South-West leader’s forum stated
this in a statement issued in Abuja and signed by Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun,
Ambassador Tunde Adeniran, and Otunba Fasawe.

The statement partly reads:

“As part of efforts to ensure that the PDP continues to maintain effective hold on
power after winning the 2011 elections, elders and stakeholders of the party held a
Retreat at Obudu in Cross Rivers state in May, on need to fairly distribute political
offices among the geo-zones of the federation in line with the zoning formula which
the party’s constitution allows.

“It was however, to the utter shock and embarrassment of members of PDP and the
people of south-west that the House of Representatives on Monday June 6, 2011
resolved to dump the zoning formula and willfully subverted the party’s position on
zoning for no appealing and compelling reason.

“The House, in essence, supplanted the chance by the south-west to produce the
Speaker, thereby taking its share in power distribution. In essence, the Lower House
reportedly plotted to offer the north-east zone a political office due to the south-west.

“We commend the national office of PDP for speaking against this development
which, to us, sounds very ludicrous as it occurred like an error and a tragedy in the
contemporary politics of Nigeria. The development has not only laid a bad
precedence in national political arrangement, it has sowed the seed of mistrust and
suspicion in the quest by Nigeria for national unity and common endeavour.”

The leaders further stated that a stakeholders meeting will be convened among PDP
members in South -West over the state of affairs of the party in the region.

“There is need to address all divisive tendencies characterising politics of the south-
west which has started gnawing at the economic and political fortunes of the zone.

“There is also need for us to start refocusing by way of opening avenues for
meaningful dialogue with political stakeholders from other zones of the federation
with a view to repositioning and re-inventing politics in the south west.

“It is against this background that we members of this group will convene a meeting
of stakeholders from the south-west at a date to be soon announced.” They stated.

Speaker Aminu Tambuwal from Sokoto state had defied PDP zoning on Monday to
contest the speakership election and defeated the party’s and presidency’s
candidate Malikat Adeola-Akande in a landslide victory.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘I Want to Marry Oprah or The Queen’ – Seun Anikulapo-Kuti

By Dayo Farore

Barely 13 weeks after his brother, Femi Kuti of the Positive Force band claimed he does not believe in marriage in an exclusive interview with Nigerian Entertainment Today, the youngest son of the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Seun Kuti in an exclusive interview with our reporter also agrees with the beliefs of his older brother saying ‘I’m not a cynic, I’m a realist. As Uncle Femi Falana put it to me, people expect the African to love, to romance and forget reasoning, but it is highly impossible for the Yoruba man to abandon his reasoning for love. However, there is going to be romance, but he will never forget reasoning’.

When we asked if he will ever get married if the right girl comes around, he went: ‘No problem as long as she’s got big money, millions of dollars. I want to marry Oprah or The Queen of England, ladies with big bucks and then I can divorce her in two years with half of her money coming to me… I want a woman who will buy me stuffs like Ferrari, Condo and the great things that would make all the nagging and stress of the marriage worth enduring.’

Seun Kuti has been playing in his father‘s Egypt 80 band since his pre-teen years before taking over the band after his father died on Saturday, August 2, 1997. His second album, ‘From Africa With Fury: Rise’ produced by Brian Eno is set to be released on Tuesday June 21, 2011 by St. Jude Music and Egypt 80 Records with his record label, Knitting Factory Records in New York City holding the copyright.

Seun Kuti on Marriage

NET: Do you mean you do not wish to give in your marriage?

Seun: Sure I want to give, but not just eternally. Being married to a woman without money means giving forever. No, I don’t want to give forever; she should be giving generously big too. (Laughs)

NET: So what happens if you marry someone like Oprah and she goes broke before two years?

Seun: I would have divorced her before she goes broke. I would know the money is finishing, that is how smart I am.

PoliticsUduaghan Storms Out Delta Assembly As Ochei Emerges Speaker by fd4all234(op): 9:53am On Jun 08, 2011
Governor of Delta State Dr Emmnuel Uduaghan on Monday walked out of the Delta
state House Assembly in protest. The Governor had sent a note to the clerk of the
assembly to remove some items from the order paper but he refused.

Following this development, Governor Uduaghah stormed out the assembly midway
into the inauguration of the assembly when the clerk started reading the proclamation
speech meant for the governor. The Governor did not return to the ceremony despite
several appeals by some members elect.

This hiccup notwithstanding, the 5th assembly of the Delta House of Assembly
elected Hon. Victor Onyekachi Ochei, PDP, representing Aniocha North
constituency, as the Speaker while Hon. Basil Ganagana, PDP representing Patani
constituency was selected as the Deputy Speaker.
Both leaders were elected unopposed.

In his acceptance speech, the new speaker said, “as you are all aware, the
legislature is an arm of government with among other functions, the task of law
making, representing the citizens, over sighting the activities and performance of
government. It’s imperative to state that the principal purpose of each arm of
government is to provide services to satisfy the needs of the people. Each arm of
government has its functions, vision, mission and the realization of this vision is
essence why we were elected.

“I am only the first among equals; I therefore crave your support, cooperation and
love, as a team with the collective desire and objective of bringing about development
and sustainable growth, through the instrumentality of legislation, once again.”
TravelNigerian Tourists Spend N12.3b Yearly In South Africa – Envoy by fd4all234(op): 9:47am On Jun 08, 2011
South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Kingsley Mamabolo has
disclosed that his country earns over N12.3 billion annually from Nigerians, who visit
the country on leisure, tourism or business.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja yesterday, Ambassador Mamabolo, revealed that a
recent statistics shows that in January 2011 alone, about 4,220 Nigerians visited
South Africa, compared to about 3,491, who visited the country for the same purpose
in January last year.

“Nigeria remains the leading African market in terms of tourist arrivals in South Africa.
Based on our research, Nigeria is identified as the hub of West Africa and a great
base for South Africa tourism to centralize tourism functions and activities within the
region. This of course is based on the country’s standing as the powerhouse of West
Africa and it’s growing economy, large population, increased use of technology and
political stability”, he said.

Ambassador Mamabolo revealed that as a result of this growth, South Africa Tourism
has concluded plans to open an office in the country, beginning with a skeletal staff
this year and full fledged operations within the next couple of years, while a new
South Africa Chancery and residential building have already been built in Abuja.
He maintained that South Africa has laws that guarantee safety and security for
residents as well as tourists visiting the country, noting that xenophobia, or violence
against visitors is a common problem in every parts of the world.
Nairaland GeneralBomb Blasts: Govt. To Procure Artificial Limbs For Victims In South Africa by fd4all234(op): 9:36am On Jun 08, 2011
After six months in hospital receiving treatment, victims of last year December 31
bomb blast in Mogadishu barrack, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja are to be flown
to South Africa to get artificial limbs.

A military sergeant and two women who lost their limbs in the incident are among
those to be flown abroad in an arrangement being made by the FCT
administration.

This is as victims of May 29 Democracy Day bomb blast in Zuba, would also be
among those who would benefit from the oversea treatment which is expected to
take effect in a week time.

Disclosing this in Abuja yesterday while on an inspection visit to the Asokoro
District Hospital and the Wuse General Hospital where some of the victims are
currently undergoing treatment, the FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr. Biodun
Olorunfemi said the FCTA would collaborate with the National Emergency
Management Agency NEMA to facilitate the immediate transfer of the affected
victims.

This according him is to rehabilitate them and also procure artificial limbs for
those who lost some parts of their bodies adding that the procurement process for
the installation of hi-tech digital surveillance equipment in Abuja has reached an
advanced stage.

His words: “They (doctors) are going to take all the measures required now to
ensure that they follow up their treatment when they are discharged and also to
make sure that they can socially get back into life. The people who are going
abroad are just the current bomb blast victims who have lost their limbs. The
limbs will be replaced in South Africa . We just want to be sure that this is done
very quickly and within the next one week, all that should be completed and
done”.

The Permanent Secretary stated that the Federal Government would soon begin
the installation of Closed Circuit television Cameras at strategic locations in the
city in order to monitor the activities of criminals and stem the tide of bomb
blasts.

“The procurement process for that has gone far. Any moment from now, they will
begin some of those installations of the CCTVs but I am sure you also know that
there are other security arrangements that also have TV network but which
government does not really have to disclose to the public.”
