Trump supporters sent pipe bombs to prominent Democrats. They ran down marchers in Charlottesville. They killed BLM protestors in Wisconsin. They murdered 23 people in El Paso. Now they’ve plotted to kidnap sitting governors. Which party has a law and order problem? Mar-A-Lago's hometown newspaper endorsed Biden for president Rarely have so many Americans yearned so strongly to remove a sitting president. Count The Palm Beach Post Editorial Board among them. Donald J. Trump’s intentionally divisive presidency is hurtling us toward the most alarming threat to American democracy that any of us has ever seen. For the first time, we have a president who cannot bring himself to commit to the peaceful transition of power. In many other countries, across many centuries, this road often has led to bloodshed, to tyranny. This is our moment — now — to stand up for democracy. To stand up, each of us, for dignity, civility and competence. To stand up for the hope of an America where we might solve the many problems we face with dialogue and give-and-take and honesty. It is time to vote for Joseph R. Biden. https://eu.palmbeachpost.com/story/opinion/editorials/2020/10/09/post-endorsement-sake-our-now-fragile-democracy-biden-president/5874446002/ |

Timiofak:McConnell says he's avoided the White House for months because of Covid concerns https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/mcconnell-says-he-s-avoided-white-house-months-because-covid-n1242634 Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday he hasn't gone to the White Housesince August because their approach to safetyduring the coronavirus pandemic "is different than mine." Speaking at an event in Erlanger, Kentucky, McConnell, the most powerful Republican in Congress, suggested he didn't think the Trump administration had been doing enough to keep the White House safe from Covid-19. "I haven’t actually been to the White House since August the 6th, because my impression was their approach to how to handle this is different from mine and what I insisted that we do in the Senate, which is to wear a mask and practice social distancing," McConnell said. The remark came as the White House has been ravaged by the coronavirus, with the president, the first lady, top advisers and numerous staffers testing positive for the disease in the past week. McConnell made the comment when asked if he thought President Donald Trump should be more transparent about his health, given his positive coronavirus diagnosis and medical treatment. "We talk a lot on the telephone. I think he’s perfectly fine. He seems normal," McConnell said, adding that the focus of their talks has been Amy Coney Barrett, who begins her Senate confirmation hearing for the Supreme Court on Monday. --- MoscowMitch values his life --- |
Deficit hit record-shattering $3.1T in 2020: CBO - So Much for GOP being Fiscal Conservatives https://thehill.com/policy/finance/520252-deficit-hit-record-shattering-31t-in-2020-cbo The federal deficit for 2020 is believed to have hit a record-smashing $3.1 trillion in 2020, well over double the highest deficit on record, according to an estimate by the Congressional Budget Office released Thursday. The official figures from the Treasury Department are expected later this month. Even before the pandemic, the deficit was on track to exceed $1 trillion for the only time since the four-year period following the Great Recession. The fiscal response to that economic downturn led to the previous record deficit of $1.4 trillion in 2009, but that number steadily declined until the mid-2010s. Since President Trump took office, the deficit has grown dramatically on the back of unfunded tax cuts and increased spending on both defense and domestic priorities. But the advent of the novel coronavirus and the massive government response exploded the deficit this year, though the estimate is below the $3.3 trillion expected even a few weeks ago. |

10/8: Trump says that stimulus relief negotiations are back on https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2020/10/08/trump-stimulus-pelosi/ President Trump said Thursday that economic relief talks are back on and could include a new round of $1,200 stimulus checks, two days after he abruptly declared them over and ordered his deputies to stop negotiating with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). “Well I shut down talks two days ago because they weren’t working out. Now they are starting to work out, we’re starting to have some very productive talks,” Trump said in an interview on Fox Business Network. He said he believes Pelosi “wants it to happen, because it’s so good for our country, we really need it.” --- Trump in his usual way ---

Trump says Gold Star families could have given him Covid-19 https://www.politico.com/news/2020/10/08/trump-gold-star-families-coronavirus-427875 President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that he might have contracted Covid-19 from Gold Star family members who were too close to him when telling stories of their loved ones who died in the line of duty. In an interview on Fox Business, Trump told host Maria Bartiromo that he “figured there would be a chance” he would become infected with the coronavirus, citing his meetings with the families of America’s war dead. |

Marines' No. 2 general tests positive for COVID-19 after Pentagon meeting - Marine Gen. Gary Thomas was already quarantining following Joint Chiefs meeting https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/marines-general-tests-positive-covid-19-pentagon-meeting/story?id=73487379&cid=clicksource_4380645_15_comic_strip_sq_hed Gen. Gary Thomas, the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Marines. The Marines' number two general had been in quarantine, along with nine other top military officers in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, following a positive test for a top Coast Guard admiral who had tested positive for the virus. "On Wednesday, the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Gary L. Thomas, tested positive for COVID-19," according to a Marine Corps statement. "He had been in self-quarantine since Tuesday, October 6, out of an abundance of caution following notification of close contact with a person who later tested positive for the virus." That person was Adm. Charles Ray, the assistant commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, who had attended a Pentagon meeting last Friday with the Joint Chiefs. Thomas had attended the meeting in place of Gen. David Berger, the Marine Commandant, who was traveling in Europe at the time. On Tuesday, the Pentagon announced that the senior officers who attended the meeting were quarantining at home as a precautionary move. They included Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. John Hyten, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the other senior generals and admiral in charge of the Army, Navy, Air Force, National Guard, Space Force, as well as Gen. Paul Nakasone, who runs both U.S. Cyber Command and the National Security Agency.

Donald Trump Is Canceling TV Ads In Midwest States That Made Him President https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/henrygomez/trump-campaign-ads-pulled-back-ohio-wisconsin President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign is slashing television spending in the Midwest, canceling millions of dollars in advertising in states that carried him to victory in 2016. He’s been off the local airwaves completely in Iowa and Ohio. The campaign also has given up at least $2 million worth of reservations in both Michigan and Wisconsin since early September. And in Minnesota, a state Trump almost won four years ago and has expressed confidence in flipping, his team already has chopped about $5 million from its projected fall TV budget. The numbers, confirmed by the media firm Advertising Analytics, reflect a race where Democrat Joe Biden has gained a fundraising advantage over Trump and where polling suggests these states are competitive toss-ups or tipping toward Biden. The Trump campaign, meanwhile, according to data shared by Democratic ad trackers, has in recent weeks boosted its TV presence in the Sun Belt battlegrounds — Arizona, Florida, and Georgia — and Nevada, a state Trump lost in 2016. |
