PoliticsI Thought My Son Would Succeed Me —grief-stricken Falae by fellowbeing(op): 5:30am On Oct 06, 2013
SOURCE: http://www.punchng.com/news/i-thought-my-son-would-succeed-me-falae/

A former Secretary to the Federal Government, Chief Olu Falae, has said he lost a political successor in his son, Deji, who died in the ill-fated Associated Airline on Thursday.

Deji, who was the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Ondo State, led the state government’s delegation to accompany the corpse of former Ondo State governor, Chief Olusegun Agagu from Lagos to Akure, for the a state burial.

Falae, who was still grieving over the loss, told the visiting Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, that he had reached the peak of his political sojourn.

“I was looking forward to seeing Deji take over from me, because I have reached the peak of my being in politics. I will miss him so much,” he said.

He, however, noted that he would submit to God since he could not question God over the death of his son.

Tambuwal had visited the home of the chieftain to commiserate with him and his family over the Thursday plane crash.

Tambuwal said Deji was his friend and had sent useful text messages to him on how to move the country forward, four days before the unfortunate incident.

He prayed that God would grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Some traditional rulers in Ondo State also paid a condolence visit to the politician in his Akure home in respect of the sad incident.

Falae, while receiving them, said his son had earned his place in the present Government of Ondo State.

According to him, in spite of his political stature, he never influenced Deji’s appointment as a commissioner.

He noted that his son had been a friend of Governor Mimiko and his appointment had nothing to do with his person.

The traditional rulers, led by Olukare of Ikare-Akoko, Obama Akadari Momoh, encouraged Falae to have faith in God.

Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, told our correspondent that the late commissioner had to go to Lagos follow the corpse down to Akure following the request by Agagu’s family that a senior member of the state government should accompany the corpse.

Meanwhile, SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Segun Mimiko, officially broke the news of Deji’s death to his father on Thursday.

Mimiko, who broke down in tears upon entering Falae’s house, was consoled by sympathisers.

Until his untimely death, Deji was the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Mimiko’s cabinet.
Politics18 Die In Another River Niger Tragedy by fellowbeing(op): 5:20am On Oct 06, 2013
SOURCE: http://www.punchng.com/news/18-die-in-another-river-niger-tragedy/

Barely six days after a boat mishap on River Niger claimed several lives in Malale village in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, another mishap has occurred leaving no fewer than 18 persons dead.

According eyewitness, the accident occurred when a boat conveying people from Kokoli to Ulakami capsized at about 4pm. The passengers were returning from a market in Kokoli, which holds every Thursday.

The boat was said to be conveying about 80 people when it split into two, throwing the passengers into the river.

A survivor, Umar Ibrahim, who spoke to our correspondent said, “We were in the middle of the 10 kilometre journey, when the boat split into two throwing all of us into the water. People started screaming and falling into the water.”

Ibrahim stated that he was able to rescue about 10 women and children adding that the men could take care of themselves and most of them assisted in the rescue to reduce the casualty figure.

He added that the intervention of the boat captains and some passengers who could swim also helped to reduce the number of victims.

“I thank almighty Allah for using the boat driver and other good swimmers to come to our rescue fast, because the bank of the river was far away from us. The other boat drivers rushed towards us and put those of us that were rescued on their boats. Some people were also very tired,” he added.

The village head, Mohammed Garba, confirmed that after the incident, he went round to find out how many people were missing and they recorded 18.

Though some villagers, said, “The river is angry because it has not be given its yearly sacrifice,” some were of the opinion that the boat was too old and was not maintained.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Disaster and Emergency Management, Mohammed Saba, appealed to them to remain calm as people were blaming the boat operators for the deaths.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency has attributed the high level of casualty in the last week’s boat mishap in Tunga Na’ Illo, Borgu Local Government Area of the state, to the lack of the state government’s presence in the area.

Speaking at a one-day sensitisation workshop on liquid and solid waste management, organised by the agency in Minna, the Agency’s North Central Coordinator, Mr. Ishaya Isah Chinoko, said “About 70 people died when the boat which was carrying over 100 villagers to the market suddenly developed an engine problem and capsized mid way in the river”.

The NEMA boss however maintained that the casualty figure would have been less if there were relevant state government agencies, like the police marine and organised local divers stationed there for rescue purposes in view of the heavy water transport activities in the area

PoliticsFG Will Soon Ban Fish Importation - Minister by fellowbeing(op): 8:15am On Aug 28, 2013
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said on Tuesday that the Federal Government would soon place a total ban on the importation of fish and other aquatic consumables.

Adesina said this in Ado-Ekiti during the inauguration of the Special Growth Enhancement Support scheme for fisheries and the aquaculture value chain, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

He, however, said that the ban would be imposed only if arrangements being put in place by the government to that effect worked as planned.

The minister, represented by the Federal Director of Fisheries, Mrs. Foluke Areola, said the country had no business importing fish, given its huge natural and renewable resources.

He said it was in view of this that the ministry was promoting increased fish production through the aquaculture value chain.

This is in pursuance of the goal of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda of the Federal Government, he said

"The value chains are to create an enabling environment for increased and sustainable production of over one million tonnes of fish within the next four years, generate employment and pursue gradual reduction of fish imports," the minister said.

Adesina noted that the aquaculture value chain, under its four-year implementation plan, would increase the annual production of fingerlings in the country by 1.25 billion tonnes.

PoliticsGroups Protest Against FG-ASUU Impasse by fellowbeing(op): 8:07am On Aug 28, 2013
Some civil society groups and students' organisations, on Tuesday, staged a protest march against the prolonged impasse between the Federal Government and the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The placard-carrying protesters said the Federal Government-ASUU disagreement had paralysed academic work in the universities.

The angry groups include the Concerned Nigerian Students; Coalition of Edo Youths Organisation; Edo Youth Congress; Edo State Students; Comrade Across the Nation; South-South Youth League; and Edo Youth for Good Government.

They converged on the Nigeria Union of Journalists' Press Centre, in Benin, berating the Federal Government over what they described as government's unwillingness to address the rot in the nation's universities.

The protesters, who brandished placards with inscriptions such as, "We are Nigerian Undergraduates Unemployed," "Education is a Right," and "Federal Government Answer ASUU," among others, said the breakdown in the FG/ASUU talk should be blamed on the former.

Former ASUU chairman, University of Benin chapter, Dr. Kashetu Ilavbare, said the presence of some of the ASUU members in the midst of the protesters was to guide them, so that they would not take the laws into their hands.

He said, "We don't have anything to do with them; but we got information that they were on the road, so we came to guide them so that they will not destroy anything and to make it peaceful. You can see they are rational people.

"There is need for infrastructure both in the schools and outside, so that is why we are trying to ensure they don't go on the rampage."

The protesters in a statement read by one Omobude Agho, called on patriotic Nigerians to support the action and to enlighten parents and others on why they were agitating.

The statement read in part, "Investigations have shown that the issues at stake are far and above the demand for higher wages. ASUU has resumed its strike because the Federal Government of Nigeria has failed to honour the agreement that it entered into with ASUU in 2009.

"This agreement provided for government funding of quality higher education for Nigerians. Provision of teaching and learning facilities, lab equipment for science students and research grants, payment of earned allowances, retirement age and progressive increase in annual budgetary allocation to the educational sector of 26 per cent, which is the UN standard.

"ASUU has used all alternatives possible in labour relations: lobbying, negotiations, letters, warning strikes, begging, press releases and conferences. However, government has refused to honour the agreement that it willingly signed with ASUU."

PoliticsFayemi Warns Against Desecration Of Traditional Institutions by fellowbeing(op): 7:54am On Aug 28, 2013
Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, warned royal families against desecration of traditional institutions, saying this was necessary in order to sustain the sacred position and relevance of the traditional rulers.

Fayemi spoke at the presentation of vehicles to members of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and the installation of the Onitaji of Itaji Ekiti in Oye Local Government, Oba Idowu Babalola, as chairman of the council.

The vehicles presented to the monarchs included 101 cars, 22 jeeps and one Hilux truck.

The governor said the presentation was in recognition of the traditional council.

He said, "I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to our people in the state, through our royal fathers, to always exercise restraints in bringing traditional institutions to disrepute by engaging in unnecessary court cases.

"This does not mean that the judiciary should not be approached for justice. They should, however, be seen as the last resort after all avenues for amicable settlement had been exploited.

"By so doing, the unnecessary delay and rancour that are usually associated with royal succession would have been avoided. Chieftaincy matters should always be resolved without blackmail and rancour as was the case during the time of our forefathers."

Fayemi said the prevalence of litigation relating to royal tussle had bred 'bad blood' across communities in the state.

He charged the monarchs not to relent in their roles by fostering peace and security, saying, the state government would be responsible for the maintenance of the vehicles.

The Onitaji's appointment as the chairman of the traditional council in Ekiti followed the expiration of the two-year tenure of the Owa Ooye of Okemesi Ekiti, Oba Adedeji Gbadebo, on August 1.

Former Super Eagles left-back Taiye

Taiwo has been hit with tax fraud charges of over 1 million Euros in France, and could lose his Marseille mansion. A Marseille court has already started judicial proceeding to seize his mansion based in Allauch, a French community situated east of Marseille and put at €600,000. Serious matter! But why do these celebs evade tax when they know they would be fished out one way or the other? We've had Wesley Snipes, Lauryn Hill and a host of others get locked up because of tax evasion. According to findings of the French fiscal authorities, Taiye Taiwo defaulted in the payment of income taxes in 2008 and 2009 as well as property taxes in 2011 on his 900m2 home, which they say will be auctioned at €200,000, three times lower than its market value. Taiwo, is said to owe €1,025,000 in taxes, but can apply through his lawyer for instalment or delayed payment if he is not financially fit to settle at the moment. The 28-year-old defender who was not present at the tax office is yet to respond to the charges, played six seasons at Olympique Marseille between 2005 and 2011 before joining Italian giants AC Milan and he recently joined Turkish side Bursaspor and currently earns €2 million per annum.
