In the build-up to the November 2nd Local Government elections in Abia State, Labour Party members in Aba North have taken to the streets to protest what they describe as the imposition of candidates by party leadership. Demonstrators gathered in both Aba and Umuahia on Friday to express their grievances ahead of the elections. Despite heavy rain, determined party members from various wards in Aba North converged outside the Labour Party Secretariat on Faulks Road, wielding placards with inscriptions voicing their opposition. The protest followed the sale of nomination forms, which began on Wednesday, October 2nd, and concluded on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024. The protesters accused the Labour Party's leadership, specifically Governor Alex Otti, of attempting to impose Mr. Iheke Kalu as the Aba North Local Government chairmanship candidate without proper consultation. They argued that the party's grassroots members had been sidelined in the decision-making process. One of the protesters, who spoke on behalf of the group, expressed their frustration, saying: "Governor Otti appointed his commissioners without consulting the party, and we accepted that, even though we didn’t know them. Then he brought in mayors for Aba North, again without consulting us, and we let it slide. But now, when it comes to choosing our Local Government Chairmen, which directly affects the grassroots, he is trying to impose candidates on us. We will not accept it. The party is supreme, and Dr. Otti must listen to us. We cannot have non-members of the Labour Party leading Aba North." In response to the protest, the Secretary of the Labour Party in Aba North, Elder Michael Onwutuebe, expressed surprise at the demonstration, claiming he had no prior knowledge of the protest or the alleged primaries. "I only became aware of the protest this morning. Many of us were preparing for a burial in Ideato, which is why we were dressed in uniforms. But suddenly, party members stormed the secretariat, believing a primary election was being held here. They were concerned about rumors that candidates had already been selected, with some individuals receiving nomination forms. I told them I had no knowledge of this," he explained. The protest, which began in Aba, later shifted to Umuahia, as disgruntled party members sought to amplify their message. Their demand remains clear: no imposition of non-party members as candidates in the upcoming Aba North Local Government elections.

Emeruwa who denied the reports described it as false and unfounded, intended to create dis affection between his office and journalists in the state. This is contrary to a statement earlier released by his chief Press Secretary, Ujoh Okechukwu who had claimed that the spacious capacity of the conference room doesn't allow accommodation of much persons hence the speaker decided to reduce the number of journalists for the media parley. He also said that only journalists earlier accredited and names of their media outfits submitted to the security personnel were allowed in. Spokesperson of House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has clarified that the move by the House to legalise the use of Indian hemp in the country is not to encourage smoking among the populace but for industrial and pharmaceutical reasons, as well as for the purpose of boosting production of over 50 products. Describing Indian hemp as one of the products needed across the word, the Bende federal constituency representative said if legalised, the agricultural produce can help in production paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, beverages, personal care products, fuel among others. Speaking on Tuesday on Flo Fm Umuahia, a radio station in Abia state,he said legalising cannabis is not a leeway to encourage smoking, maintaining that as a born-again Christian, he has not engaged in smoking or any other form of intoxicant since birth and will not encourage it. He revealed that according to verified market research, the global industrial hemp market in 2019 was valued at $5bn, saying it is projected to reach $36bn in 2026. While adding that Nigeria could be a big exporter of cannabis if the right steps are taken, Hon. Kalu urged Nigerians to apply critical thinking to innovations instead of attack. While adding that other countries are legalising the growing of industrial hemp, he advised that Nigeria must not be left behind. In line with UN Single Treaty, he added that the product will be limited to few people, saying unauthorized access will attract sanction. Hon. Kalu insisted that at a time when the entire world is moving away from fossil fuel, transitting into alternative power sources to power vehicles and others, Nigeria must not be left behind. On the medicinal benefit of cannabis, he stated that the World Health Organization, WHO December last year recommended that the United Nations, UN should remove cannabis from schedule 4 of 1961 single convention on narcotic drugs and be classified as therapeutic and medicinal substance. The House of Representatives is explaining that the bill to remove the minimum wage negotiation on the concurrent list was aimed at making states viable and competitive to deliver on programs and policies that are essential to their people. The spokesperson of the house of Representatives and member representing Bende Federal Constituency, Ben Kalu in a reaction to the outrage that has greeted the bill told FLO 94.9FM during his radio weekly engagement program with his constituent that it was intended to allow states to function optimally according to resources available to them. He argued that the bill was part of the financial restructuring of the country that would allow states to also develop in their areas of competitive advantage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjlLqvmZa7c&t=415s |
