Revocation of Savanna Bank licence stays – Soludo

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria , Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday, foreclosed the possibility of re-validating the operating licence of the defunct Savanna Bank. Soludo made this position public, while fielding questions from members of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions in Abuja.

He said, “The bank’s licence was revoked on February 15, 2002, as at which time I have not come into office. The bank went to the court; that is the good and the bad thing about our democracy.

“The good news is that individual’s exercising their rights can go to court. The bad news is that it takes a long time for the court to adjudicate the matter.

“In the case of Savanna, the bank went to court since 2002. The Federal High Court, in October last year, finally delivered a judgment and upheld the decision of the CBN for the revocation and confirmed that CBN acted within the powers conferred on it by section 12 of the Banking and Other Financial Institutions Act.”

Soludo explained that initially, Nigerian banks went to raise funds to meet the N25bn re-capitalisation directive but, that they were now faced with a greater task of expanding their business to meet emerging challenges.

According to him, most banks now realise that their potentials are quite huge, hence, the need to go into the market to raise more funds.

He said as at 2004, Nigeria had a total of 14.8 depositors but that the number has reached 22million as at today.

As to why bank profits were yet to affect the real sector of the economy. He said the return on investments for most of the banks was still very low.

According to him; “They are making money but they are not yet there. If you invest N200bn and you make 25billion a year you don’t look at the number as absolutes.” He however expressed confidence that the effects would soon be felt. He hinged his confidence on the fact that a single bank today had the capacity to finance projects that the entire 89 banks could not jointly finance before the consolidation exercise.

Share buy back is not legal in Nigeria under the laws and regulations of the SEC.
Really.

@ everybody

Where can i get updated information including (past AUDITED RESULT) for quoted companies on NSE.
I have checked CASHCRAFT, doesn't seems to give me what i'm looking for.

eniyanman:
@femtex,
share buyback costs money share reconstruction doesn't (not exactly true in the real sense). share buyback is used by companies who want to return money to shareholders but want to avoid paying too much dividend, as dividends are taxed differently to capital gains (dividends are regarded as income, in the UK for example). Share reconstruction can be used to reduce or increase liquity of a stock. There are also adminstrative reasons for doing a share reconstruction.
Thanks  eniyanman

@ all my gurus,

How come most of these banks with high share units are not thinking about share buybacks rather than reconstructions. They have the cash pile up to buy their stock in the open market. How come they are not entertaining this idea. This will therefore reduce number of available shares and increase EPS. What are the benefit of reconstruction compare to Share buybacks?

@ all,

If I get fired from my Full Time JOB for not being productive enough; I'm thinking Should I blame Seun for being the father of Nairaland or should I blame all my Gurus/everybody for keeping me glued to the chair, refreshing Nairaland site every minute to see which Private Placement is best to buy based on analysis, which IPO is better to buy and not get your money return and which Opportunities on secondary market is going to turn up next based on CICO theory, RSI technical analysis, Once again, Million thanks to every member that makes this thread so lively everyday. You guys are unbelievable, God will repay you guys abundantly. May we live forever and never see the downturn of NSE. If thats is possible.

My guy

Don't beat yourself at all on these offers, you have more opportunities coming your way. I don't know much about big treat. For Japaul Oil, those who bought into the offer should be praying for the management not declare Dividend and Bonuses. If they do, this will wipe out most of the gains that is been shown on NSE right now before they get their cert. Check First bank situation, remember when the TS was lifted, the stock rallied up to 54-58. Once 1st bank declared bonuses and Dividends for the year, the share price was marked down as well.
