The sites below shed more light on what the city will become and how they will accomplish that goal

ON AN island at the mouth of China's Yangzi River, plans are afoot to build the city of the future. The first residents will move in within five years. The city will be self-sufficient in energy and water and will generate almost no carbon emissions. Petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned in favour of solar-powered boats and fuel-cell-driven buses. The developers of this "eco-city", called Dongtan, hope that it will come to be seen as a model for the rest of the world: London's mayor, for one, is already inspired by it. Will it work?

The island, Chongming, is a semi-rural county on the northern boundary of Shanghai, China's most populous and crowded city, with a population of more than 9.3m in its main urban area. Shanghai's rapid economic growth in recent years has made land in the city extremely expensive. Chongming, relatively poor and undeveloped compared with the neighbouring city, has long looked ripe for development into yet another expanse of factories and commuter towns. Instead, the city's planners¡ªwith strong backing from China's political leadership¡ªhave decided to turn it into a model of what Shanghai is not. Chongming is to be an eco-friendly island. At its eastern end, on an expanse of reclaimed wetland that is today home to a scattering of farmers and fishermen, the eco-city of Dongtan will rise from the paddy fields, crab ponds and vegetable plots to become home to tens¡ªeventually hundreds¡ªof thousands of people.

Chongming likes to call itself China's third-largest island, though many would no doubt object to that description in independent-minded Taiwan (supposedly the largest island, with the offshore province of Hainan as number two). It is a strip of alluvial silt about 80km (50 miles) long and 17km wide that is home to some 650,000 people. The plan is to turn some of this farmland into forest and to make all agriculture organic. Chongming also hopes to attract low-polluting, high-tech industries. But much of its economy will be generated by "green" tourism. Chongming's forests¡ªall planted, because there is no natural woodland¡ªwill provide a holiday refuge for Shanghai's residents, who have few parks or other open spaces to enjoy. There are also plans for a theme park.

Then there is the wetland. Chongming's fringe of tidal reed-covered mudflats¡ªespecially close to Dongtan¡ªare a haven for birds, including the rare black-faced spoonbill, as they migrate between Australia and Siberia. Last year the central government put the wetland under state protection, although Yu Weidong, an ornithologist at Shanghai Normal University, dryly observes that it took two decades of lobbying to achieve this. Dongtan's planners say they will not only preserve the mudflats, but also create a wildlife park some 4km wide as a buffer along the edge of the wetland¡ª"a placenta where life is to be gestated", according to their brochure. Only one-fifth of Dongtan's 86km2 area is to be urbanised.

It sounds like just the kind of greenness so urgently needed in the rest of China. The country's cities are choked by the exhaust fumes from a burgeoning number of cars, shrouded with dust from countless building sites and soaked with rain turned acidic from coal burnt for power and heating. It is beguiling to imagine that Chongming might become a model for city planners elsewhere in China as they struggle with the fastest urban growth in the country's history. By some estimates, China's urban areas, already home to around 560m people, may well have to accommodate another 300m people by 2020.

The central government, worried about the country's growing reliance on imported fuel and anxious to dispel its image as a super-polluter in the making, has begun to talk enthusiastically about the need for "green GDP" growth. There is hardly a local government that does not talk these days about plans for an eco-village, town or even city. But what they mean by this is vague. The central government fears that issuing clearer instructions could threaten growth and social stability. Officials bicker about how to quantify green GDP. Chongming, with little manufacturing industry that might resent the cost of going green, is seen as a low-risk place to experiment.

Ken Livingstone, London's mayor, is one Chongming enthusiast. During a trip to Shanghai in April, he described the Dongtan project as "breathtaking in scale and ambition" and a potential "beacon to the world on how to achieve a low-carbon future". Mr Livingstone has plans to build a zero-carbon suburb in London, in conjunction with Arup, a British engineering firm that is helping to design Dongtan. The project, in an old industrial area in east London, would be much smaller than Dongtan. But Mr Livingstone has said his plan would show that it is "affordable and achievable to make all major new developments low-carbon."

PoliticsGenerator Fumes Kill 17 At Nigeria Prayer Meeting by Femtex(op): 4:54pm On Jul 17, 2008
UMUAHIA, Nigeria (Reuters) - At least 17 people died at a prayer meeting in rural Nigeria after apparently breathing noxious fumes from their power generator while asleep, police and witnesses said on Wednesday.

The deaths highlight the worsening power crisis in Africa's top oil producer, where the near collapse of the national grid is forcing homes and businesses to turn to portable generators.

Much of Nigeria has no mains power for weeks at a time. The capacity of the world's eighth biggest oil exporter has plunged to less than 1,000 megawatts from 3,000 a year ago.

The victims fell asleep on Saturday in a locked room with the generator still running, police said. Their bodies were discovered and the incident reported on Tuesday.

"We are still investigating the cause of the deaths. But a power generating set was found in the hall where they slept, so we are not ruling out suffocation through carbon monoxide inhalation," police spokesman Ali Okechukwu said.

The family had gathered in a village in the Isiala-Ngwa district of Abia to pray for one of their own whom they said was being haunted by evil spirits.

Though Nigerians are very religious, many are highly superstitious and hold strong beliefs in voodoo, ghosts and witchcraft. One survivor, Linus Abba, said the victims were attacked by the evil spirits they were trying to exorcise.

"I heard strange noises and noticed that the room where we slept was filled with smoke, that is all I can remember because I fainted," Abba told Reuters. "It was a terrible attack by the forces of darkness that we came to fight."

Generator fumes kill scores of people in Africa's most populous country of 140 million every year.

BusinessRe: Chams Private Placement by Femtex(m): 8:55pm On Jul 16, 2008
I don't think you want CHAMS to be listed right now. There is an expectation that what happened to omatek, tantalizer e.t.all might happen to this company as well. With the current situation of NSE, I’ll rather let them wait a bit before attempting to list the company. Now with the issue of Certs; I totally agree with you, people should have their certs by now. You might want to contact their registrar’s office.

@ Larez,

I do agree with you. Hunger will take you places you never imagine.

Thanks for being here with us. It seem i felt to hook with tripple G. I decided to join the train of Glaxosmith and ADSWITCH. I hope am not making a suicide. Comments are welcome.
I will say, thread softly on Adswitch. I have EPS of 4.16K with PE ratio of 156.98. This is based on their quarter two result which I doubled with outstanding shares of 125m. If it’s up to me, this is a no go area.

I believe Glasosmith is good at today’s price (or it might go a little lower). I guess people responded to the result by dumping the stock when the FY result fails to meet expectation. I guess many people were probably expecting bonus, instead of the 45K dividend they are now paying. Based on today's price, its trailing PE is about 24 which put it in my buy list.

Based on Daar Communication IPO

If their 2007 PAT was (223,782,000) with 8,000,000,000 outstanding shares. This is giving me EPS of 2.79 kobo. Based on this, projected PE is about 179.21. Now based on their projection for 08 & 09, they have PAT of (3,217,877,000) for 2008, (4,258,910,000) for 2009 with PE of 12 and 9 respectively. My question is, can they achieve this aggressive projection for 2008 and 2009. Is there something brewing that we don't know about that can get them to those projected PAT.

aktopgun:
Me personally, i look at the candlestick pattern first and then other indicators to confirm.

for AGLeventis, it is definitely on the upswing and gapped up again today, doing a 4-price doji in the process. in more developed markets this indecision would be suspect but in the nse i am used to seeing this kind of indecisive pattern going on for weeks becasue the stock is so thinly traded. next i look at volume. the volume has been higher in the last 2 days than in the last 6 months, something is abbout to happen.

all the other indicators are in positive territory and most have been for a while/ i would get out if my target has been met or exceeded on this one.

on the post i highlighted in your text, because an indicator is in the overbought area doesnt necessarily mean a sell becasue u can never tell how long it will be in there for. some spend only a day or two in there and others like AG leventis are there for weeks.

hope this helps
Thanks
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by Femtex(m): 5:35pm On Feb 25, 2008
@ aktopgun / everybody,

I'm trying to understand this candlestick theory / prediction.

I'm going to use AG Leventis as an example. Considering TA;

RSI is about  90. Meaning it is above 70, therefore it is in the overbought zone and you should sell.

MACD is telling you that is Divergence is positive (0.1208), meaning it just hit a new low and you should buy more.
Also, the MACD rises above the signal line - giving a bullish signal.

When you look at the MFI line, it is right around the 75.77 mark (approx 80). This is telling you that it is almost in the overbought zone and you should sell.

Based on these 3 criteria, would you guys recommend AG leventis a buy, Hold or sell?
CareerRe: Two Offers: A Banking Job And An Engineering Job by Femtex(m): 4:27pm On Feb 12, 2008
My guy,

Although, the banking job present the best option at the moment considering the better cash flow opportunity. Come to think of it, this is a marketing position; which means if you don't produce, there is a possibility of getting laid off or fired. The question is, Does your friend have the character/will to succeed as a marketer. Does he have the potential of holding the Job for a long time (5 years) rather than 3 months? Does he have the same passion for marketing as he does for engineering? I believe you can make career out of anything, so far you have passion for it. If all these are true; then go for the banking Job.

My best option will be in the engineering field. It presents better career in terms of job experience that will land you your dream Job within 2 - 5 years if you play your card right. 60K is nothing @ the moment, but when you have the right experience, it might fetch you more than you can ever imagine. In terms of job stability on the long run; engineering gives you better option.

Tell your friend to weight his option.
