Nairaland / General / Buhari Moves To Restrict Corrupt Persons’ Movement by fessyadedic: 12:54pm On May 12, 2016
Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday expressed delight and his support for a proposal to stop anybody found to be involved in corrupt practices from traveling abroad.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President expressed his delight at the proposal in his statement to the Anti-Corruption Summit hosted by Prime Minister David Cameron in London. Buhari was also quoted as saying that it was also a good idea that such corrupt persons were stopped from investing and doing business overseas.
He said his administration was committed to deploying public-private information sharing partnerships to bring together governments, law enforcement, regulators and the financial sector.
The aim of the partnership, he explained, is to among others detect, prevent and disrupt money laundering linked to corruption.
He also said the country under his leadership was committed to joining the pilot initiative for automatic exchange of beneficial information.
Buhari also said his administration was committed to reviewing penalties and other actions against professional enablers of tax evasion, including for corporations that fail to prevent their employees from facilitating tax evasion.
The President said, “We commit to work together to enhance company disclosure on the payments to governments for the sale of oil, gas and minerals, complementing ongoing work within the EITI.
“Nigeria is already reporting progress through the EITI working groups and will continue to work with interested countries to build a common understanding and strengthen the evidence for transparency in this area.
“We welcome voluntary disclosures through EITI reporting and by some major companies regarding payments to governments for the sale of oil, gas and minerals.
“We welcome the new 2016 EITI Standard, in particular the requirements on beneficial ownership and the sale of the government’s share of production. We will sign up to the Common Reporting Standard initiative.
“We commit to reviewing penalties and other actions against professional enablers of tax evasion, including for corporations that fail to prevent their employees from facilitating tax evasion.
“We support the development of a global commitment for public country by country reporting on tax information for large multinational enterprises.
“We commit to the strengthening of our asset recovery legislation, including through non-conviction based confiscation powers and the introduction of unexplained wealth orders.”
Buhari also said his administration had drafted what he called Proceeds of Crime Bill aimed at easing asset recovery procedures.
He added, “In order to improve on the current legal procedures and ease asset recovery procedures, we have drafted the Proceeds of Crime Bill which provides for the transparent management of recovered funds and assets and a non-conviction based approach to asset recovery.
“We will work with others countries, civil society, international organisations to support accelerated implementation of the voluntary provisions of the UN Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and we commit to the implementation of the outstanding obligations under the UNCAC.
“We support the establishment of an International Anti-Corruption Coordination Center to be managed by National Crimes Agency of Britain. We will work with NCA in promoting this centre in the African region.”
Buhari also pledged that in furtherance of his administration’s ongoing war against corruption, Nigeria would soon begin the full implementation of the principles of the Open Contracting Data Standard.
He said the Federal Government would apply the Open Contracting Data Standard to major projects in the oil, transportation, power, health, education and other sectors.
The Open Contracting Data Standard enables disclosure of data and documents at all stages of the contracting process by defining a common data model.
The publication of OCDS data ensures greater transparency in public contracting, and can support accessible and in-depth analysis of the efficiency, effectiveness, fairness, and integrity of public contracting systems.
Buhari said his administration was also
taking steps to ensure greater transparency of the ownership and control of all companies involved in property purchase and public contracting.
“Nigeria is already collating this information through the Extractive Industry Initiative process and will extend it to other sectors.
“Nigeria will establish a transparent central register of foreign companies bidding on public contracts and buying property. We welcome the proposal by developed countries to work together to improve the access of developing countries to beneficial ownership information for use in public contracting, the President said.
Nairaland / General / FRSC Begins Seizure Of Vehicles With Expired Tyres by fessyadedic: 12:42pm On May 12, 2016
Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, said the commission would from next week, commence impounding vehicles with expired tyres across the country.
Oyeyemi made this known at a capacity development workshop for Zonal and Sector Heads of Operations of the commission in Enugu on Thursday.
“We have a major problem in our hands. Our management team will be in the field next week to enforce the ban on usage of expired tyres on our “I will personally lead a team that will impound vehicles with expired tyres and secure other vehicles to convey passengers in affected vehicles to their destinations,” he said.
He said that usage of expired tyres and speeding were among the most significant challenges in traffic management in the country currently.
According to him, the rising rate of road crashes is alarming; more than 90 per cent of such incidents, between Feb. 9 and April 7, were as a result of tyre burst.
Oyeyemi added that the commission would also embark on sensitisation of motorists on the dangers of using expired tyres, saying that the step was part of the efforts to minimise road crashes.
He said that use of old tyres had accounted for many fatal auto crashes.
“Tyres are like drugs and last for four years. Some cars move on tyres produced in 2008,” he said.
The corps marshal said that FRSC had recorded significant success in checking crashes involving articulated vehicles and was out to replicate same success on vehicles with expired tyres.
He said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had shown interest in securing Nigerian roads by releasing funds to the commission for its operation.
Oyeyemi said, “We must appreciate the president because for the past 28 years, we have never received 100 per cent capital allocation.
“For the first time we got that this year; 90 per cent of the allocation is for procurement of vehicles and these vehicles will be commissioned by the president on Monday, May 16.
“More than N1.8bn was invested into vehicle procurement and this is the highest number of procurement of vehicles we have ever done in the history of the commission,” he said.
“You must go all out to educate. We must save all those lives; those crashes must be brought down.” .

Phones / Glo Introduced Another Plan N1,000 For 2GB – Alternative by fessyadedic: 12:11pm On May 12, 2016
After some couples of weeks that Glo totally Upgraded Glo BIS on Android and Blackberry device N1,000 for 3GB Plan and everyone was a kind of wondering how expensive the new Absolute and Complete plan will be for N1,400 and N1500 respectively but both carries the same 3GB. Hmm…
I Kept wondering who gave them the idea to upgrade the N1,000 plan to N1,400. A lot of people ported to Glo network because they discovered how cheap their data plans is and that it works on Android. Now the deed has been done and Glo want to re-write their mistake with this new plan they just introduced.
If you have been following me in the previous weeks, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Glo just introduced a new BIS plan For N1,000 and it gives you 2GB . Works like the previous, only that after seeing the light, I don’t think I can ever waste my N1,000 for this mere 2GB plan when I know fully well that I can get more than that adding just N300 on it.
How Can I Get This Plan?
Dial *777*25#
Your N1,000 will be deducted and 2GB will be given to you.
Do you think this plan is a better alternative to the previous?

Romance / Danger!! How Smart Phones Wreck Your Relationships. by fessyadedic: 8:52am On Nov 09, 2015
Even with the most devoted couples, it seems that once-
common conversations in bed have been replaced with
endless scrolling through social media apps or funny image-
based sites – individually.
Is the internet putting up a barrier between people, even in
bed?
We compulsively carry our smartphones with us wherever we
go. The classroom, the bathroom, the bedroom, the outdoors
— our phone is always in hand as if it were some magic self-
defense tool capable of protecting us from all that is evil in
the world.
It all happened so fast. We didn’t have the time to set any
boundaries for smartphone usage, and now we find ourselves
unable to save our relationships and form meaningful
interactions with those dear to us.
Smartphones are very useful in many circumstances.
However, although not ruining your relationships per se,
they can harm it in devious ways.

1._Lack of Mindfulness_
A smartphone is a modern day distraction that is so common,
it’s hardly noticed any more. It accompanies us wherever we
go, demanding our attention multiple times a day. A phone
call, a Facebook notification, oh look someone just pinned
my cake pops recipe!
We become irrevocably immersed in our digital lives,
prioritizing the virtual world over anything else. Is it really
that important to Instagram your dinner, rather than actually
savoring it and sharing your impressions – or maybe a
forkful of the dish – with the person next to you?
Smartphones get in the way of our relationships, making it
impossible for us to wholeheartedly devote our attention to
the present moment. As a result, we lose many moments of
wonder that are unique and never to be lived again.
Why pay a #15,000 to see your favorite band, if you’re going to
watch the whole thing through your smartphone camera
anyway?

2._Loss of Communication_
Smartphones can be the culprit of communication
breakdown among couples.
Intimacy is hard to achieve or maintain when your phone
keeps beeping with alerts, notifications and email reminders.
A constant, merciless distraction, our smartphones have
come to replace deep-felt, long conversations in view of non-
urgent, shallow tasks; retweeting a fun tweet, updating your
Facebook status for the 136th time.
In fact, some people talk more about their relationships on
Facebook than they do face-to-face with the person they’re
actually in a relationship with!
We’re becoming so obsessed over how our lives look to
others through the digital glass that we forget how
significant it is to live, invest and relish in the present
moment and the reality we’re in.
Why choose to communicate through social media, rather
than enjoy a friend’s company? Or better yet, do something
together, other than sitting side by side staring at the
displays on your individual devices?
Inevitably, excessive smartphone use drives us away from
each other, and we only choose to communicate
impersonally and for superficial matters. Somehow, bonding
and intimacy no longer appeal to us, making it impossible
for us to build any new, sincere relationships.

3._Destabilization of Relationships_
To sustain a relationship it needs to be based on constant
give and take, where we think about someone else at least as
much as we think about ourselves. Smartphones upset this
balance.
They can turn us into selfish, nonempathetic individuals
who are only worried how many likes their Instagram photo
received, or how many times their meme got repinned. We
place too much emphasis on our digital lives, and we lose
sight of the urgency and beauty of the everyday.
This leads to a vicious circle, where the more we interact
with the digital world, the more we . . .
become indifferent to the real world and people;
get attached to the meaningless approval of strangers
online;
seek validity and recognition from people we don’t
know;
fail to see or interact with people we do know;
lose the connections to the real world and real people;
depend on the virtual world.
..
We’ve become convinced that our mobile alerts and
notifications are urgent no matter what. We feel the urge to
reply or check our email and social media accounts over and
over again like our lives depended on it.
As a result, we’ve become overly attached to digital
communication, regarding real life communication as
secondary.
We exchange the depth and quality of face-to-face
interactions with shallow and impersonal connections. We
have fallen under the delusion that smartphones improve our
experiences and relationships, when in reality, they’re slowly
eating them alive.
We sabotage our happiness and wreak havoc with our
relationships, failing to see which is more important in our
life. Small, precious moments are slipping away because
we’re focused on reading all of our emails, and we get
unreasonably anxious if we put our phones away even for 30
minutes.
Perhaps we should ask ourselves whether being disconnected
is, after all, really that hard. Do we really need our
smartphones in the bathroom or in bed?

Change your reaction towards your phone today, always respect the presence of your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend or fiancee and save your relationship from it unprecedented fall.
