You can get pregnant with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Trying to get pregnant with no success month after month can be frustrating, discouraging and very confusing. But most especially frustrating is when you are experiencing irregular periods. While it may seem initially that there is no answer to your question, when it comes to infertility and irregular periods, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is often the answer. The good news is that you can have a successful pregnancy even if you have PCOS.

PCOS is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. It may cause infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, which is often one of the first signs of PCOS.

This hormonal imbalance interferes with the development of your eggs and the regular release of your eggs (ovulation). The ovaries are commonly characterized by numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) or ‘cysts’ which is why it is referred to a ‘polycystic ovaries’.


WAY FORWARD

WEIGHT LOSS CAN HELP
Gaining a lot of weight can affect your hormones, which can lead to PCOS and make symptoms more severe. If you are overweight, losing weight may help get your hormones back to normal levels. Sometimes losing just 5- 10% of your body weight can sometimes restore your ovulation and make our fertility medications work more efficiently, which could help you get pregnant.

OVULATION INDUCTION

Called ovulation induction, this treatment is designed to stimulate the ovary to increase egg production. Ovulation induction uses tablets (pills) or injections over a period of time. The medications we use are quite effective and lead to ovulation roughly 80% of the time.
Induction varies with individual some by just taking pills get the result while for some might be the combination of things to get the desired result.

But it is always essential you follow up the induction with a folliculometry to see how you respond.

Even though infertility and irregular periods can be frustrating, the good news is that there are simple, effective treatment options for women with PCOS.

OVULATION DISORDERS

About one quarter of infertility cases are due to ovulation disorders. If a woman has an ovulation disorder, she may ovulate infrequently or not all. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common disorders impacting ovulation. Other causes of ovulation disorders include ovarian insufficiency and hypothalamic amenorrhea.


TUBAL FACTOR

Tubal factor fertility is when there are problems in the fallopian tube(s), which prevents the sperm from fertilizing the egg.

UTERINE FIBROIDS

Fibroids are noncancerous growths in the uterus. They are very common (approximately 40% of women have them them). However, the presence of fibroids alone doesn’t necessarily cause infertility or predispose a woman to pregnancy loss. Fibroids that distort the uterine cavity have an impact on the ability of an embryo to implant and should be removed surgically. The impact of fibroids located elsewhere in the uterus are controversial and do not always require surgery.


AGE

Infertility due to age is one of the most common causes of female infertility. As a woman gets older, the number of her eggs decreases rapidly. Additionally, the quality of her eggs also decreases increases the chance of chromosomal abnormalities. Studies have shown that approximately 70% of miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities.



ENDOMETRIAL POLYPS

Endometrial polyps are growths found in the uterine cavity. Large polyps or multiple polyps can impact fertility by interfering with the ability of embryo to implant and should be removed. The impact of small or single polyps is more controversial.


ENDOMETRIOSIS

Endometriosis is when the tissue of the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus. About 10% of reproductive age women are affected by endometriosis.



UNEXPLAINED

Even after a full fertility work-up, for one in five couples an exact cause of infertility cannot be determined. Unexplained infertility is not the same thing as having no explanation, but rather reflects the fact that the tests performed have been normal. There is always an explanation! Often, in vitro fertilization (IVF) can reveal abnormalities in egg quality, sperm function, or embryo development that would not have been determined from standard testing. Thankfully, even when the cause of infertility is not known, various fertility treatments can eventually lead to delivery of a healthy baby.

For those that just got married and you are less than 2 years into marriage. I will advice dont let pressure from family affect you as we have seen often, most time this pressure affect physiologically which in turn affects the hormones in the body and before you know it cycles are been altered which automatically affects conception. So the best shot is be calm and take it gentle, if you need to do anything just simply visit a gynecologist instead of worrying. Or better still you go for a pelvic scan to check the state of your uterus and ovaries(if you are very curious then transvaginal scan should be your best shot) as it will help access your ovaries properly also.

If scan says all is well then it is good you believe so and get calm. But if you now think you need to do something else then you next take will be to track your follicles to know when you ovulate, it is called follicular tracking or folliculometry, most time failure to know when you ovulate leads to lack of conception because. I have seen people that ovulate early while some late but if they put the 14days in their mind as when they ovulate they will just be wasting away time and some doesnt ovulate.

So doing this will help you to know when your ovulation really takes place and if not you can see a gynecologist to know way forward. As some will have polycystic ovarian sydrome and some wouldnt just have mature follicles, and some the follicle will just grow to a cyst et al

If ovulation takes place after your tracking and you meet with your partner and no conception.

In all of this we are assuming that your spouse has a good sperm count.

This where i can recommend you do HSG, to check your tubes. It is important to note that HSG is both for diagnostics purpose and for correction as studies as shown that it increases the chance of conception after it is done withing 3months of the procedure.

If tubes are blocked then d hydrotubation will be next but if the tubes are okay, just keep up with tracking after the HSG you will get the desired result before you start the issue of IVF and the likes.


Plus like i will always say to people dont forget to make prayers your number one shot in all.

Having heard from so many expectant mothers. I have seen a lot of people just spending all they have in the name of trying to conceive. Some of the few things i have seen common is the complain of i have spent a lot and by the time you ask the things they have done it can even be outline.
In the verge of trying to conceive be guided, some certain things need to cleared before you start spending. Dont just start spending your money anyhow, often time it is this spending that often lead to frustration.
I will be sharing few things i believe you need to take as steps when you are expecting and the major factors that should be considered for anyone expecting.
Someone else experience isn't your experience hence be careful of just taking things you hear from people and just start doing.
The pressure of trying to conceive can be much,I can understand but ensure you keep your mind sane and do things that are needful and just throwing money out of ignorance.

It is important to note that INFERTILITY is defined as not being able to get pregnant despite having frequent, unprotected sex for at least a year for most couples.

Infertility may result from an issue with either you or your partner, or a combination of factors that prevent pregnancy.

The cause of infertility may be difficult to determine but may include inadequate levels of certain hormones in both men and women.

Hence both men and women can be cause of infertility. Hence as much as the women carry the burden often in this part of the world the men too should be as much involve in getting solutions.
