He was the first African American to hold a medical degree and graduated at the top in his class at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Smith was born into slavery in 1813 in New York City and was set free on July 4, 1827, at age 14, by the Emancipation Act of New York. That was the final date when New York officially freed its remaining slaves. His mother was an enslaved woman named Lavinia who achieved her freedom later in life; in 1855, Smith described her as a "self-emancipated woman." She was born into slavery in South Carolina and had been brought to New York as a slave.[2][permanent dead link] His father was Samuel Smith, a white merchant and his mother's master, who had brought her with him to New York from South Carolina.

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Talbot County, Maryland. The plantation was between Hillsboro[13] and Cordova; his birthplace was likely his grandmother's cabin[a]east of Tappers Corner, (38.8845°N 75.958°W) and west of Tuckahoe Creek.[14][15] The exact date of his birth is unknown, and he later chose to celebrate his birthday on February 14.[4] In his first autobiography, Douglass stated: "I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it."[13][16]

Douglass was of mixed race, which likely included Native American and African on his mother's side, as well as European.[17] His father was "almost certainly white," as shown by historian David W. Blight in his 2018 biography of Douglass.[

How Malcolm X's parents met in Montreal

   There would surely never have been a Malcolm X had the great black-rights leader's parents just stayed in Montreal.
  Malcolm Little, aka Malcolm X's parents met in Montreal in a sequence of events that began when Edgerton Langdon, described as a "labourer," invited his niece Louise Norton to come from Grenada to stay with him at his home at 150 St. Martin (see map and illustration below) in 1918.
   Louise was the light-skinned product of a union between a black mother and a white father. She looked and spoke like a white person, according to Malcolm X, who later clearly disapproved of the grandfather he never knew.
   Louise didn't know her white father and Malcolm, one of her seven children, described his maternal white grandpa as a "rapist" and said he was glad not to know him.
   It probably wasn't a ton of fun for Louise in Montreal, as her uncle Edgerton was considered a "mean, mean man," according to Edgerton's granddaughter Sylvia Langdon of Coursol St, who I interviewed in 2003.
    Louise found herself attending meetings of the newly-formed Montreal branch of Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association, where she met Earl in 1918.
  Earl Little had recently moved to Montreal from Reynolds, Georgia. 
Malcolm X    Little, a father of three, was a dark skinned Baptist involved with Garvey's group in Montreal.
   Earl, 29, and Louise, 22, married here in Montreal on May 10, 1919, thus beginning a stormy, brutal and historical union.
  “An educated woman, I suppose, can’t resist the temptation to correct an uneducated man. Every now and then, when she put those smooth words on him, he would grab her,” wrote Malcolm X, describing their domestic violence.
   The two eventually left Montreal for Philadelphia then Omaha and finally Lansing Michigan and had seven children along the way.
   One of those children, Malcolm - born May 19, 1925 in Omaha - came out light-skinned and red haired. “Thinking about it now, I feel definitely that just as my father favored me for being lighter than the other children, my mother gave me more hell for the same reason,” he later wrote.
   The union born in Montreal soon descended into tragedy. Earl went to court to defend the family’s right to live in a white neighbourhood in Lansing and soon after, the house was burnt down and Earl was mysteriously found dead, run over by a streetcar. Louise was committed to a mental institution in 1939. 
   The children were sent to foster homes, and Malcolm Little eventually became an academic and athletic star before running into troubles of his own. Rather than wallow in failure Malcolm Little became the great black civil rights leader Malcolm X.
   Meanwhile in Montreal,  Edgerton’s son Henry also became a black rights leader but right here in Montreal.
  Henry, who despised his old man, went on to serve in the Air Force and led the local UNIA for decades until his death in 1997.  Henry didn't think much of his cousin Malcolm Little, aka Malcolm X but eventually he came around and later spoke admiringly of him.




Earl Little Father of Malcolm X was a very dark skin African American born in the 18th century not long after slavery. So Earl Little was not the son of a Caucasian slave master and that means his son Malcolm X although light skin was an original Hebrew male. This is significant to show you that complexion has nothing to do with identifying who is mixed with Caucasian and who isn't mixed. By mixed we mean by paternal DNA. All bloodline traces through the father because of this following reason. The couple separated before their second son was born, and Farrakhan says he never knew his biological father.[9] In a 1996 interview with Henry Louis Gates Jr., he speculated that his father, "Gene", may have been Jewish.

America’s Jewish and African-American communities have a shared history of collaboration around civil rights and advocacy on behalf of minority groups, but little is known about the remarkable story of interracial cooperation that took place in the 1930s at historically Black colleges and universities.

“Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow: Jewish Refugee Scholars at Black Colleges” tells that story in an exhibit through June 2 at The National Museum of American Jewish History, at 101 South Independence Mall East (at Fifth and Market streets). In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, NMAJH will be open and free to the public on Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow” tells the story of Jewish academics from Germany and Austria who came to the U.S. after being dismissed from their teaching positions in the 1930s. Some found positions at historically Black colleges and universities in the Jim Crow South. “Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow” looks at the empathy between two minority groups with histories of persecution, some of whom came together in search of freedom and opportunity, and shared the early years of struggle in the Civil Rights Movement.

In early 1933, before the Nazis began dismissing Jews from their posts, more than 12 percent of faculty members at German universities were Jewish. While top academics like Albert Einstein were in demand at prestigious universities, lesser-known professors had a much more difficult time finding teaching positions in the United States. The country was still in a depression, and unemployment, xenophobia and anti-Semitism were prevalent. As anti-Jewish actions in Germany escalated, several organizations, including the Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced Foreign Scholars, worked to obtain positions for the exiled scholars. Of the several hundred refugee scholars who came to this country, more than 50 found positions at historically Black colleges. This exhibition presents a World War II-era refugee story many visitors may not be familiar with, and one that had a major impact on the small Southern communities whose stories it relates.

“You had the situation where you had highly trained experience professors in search of work and you have HBCUs in search of quality educators to serve their community, so it was kind of this serendipitous wonderful serendipity of the moment where this mutual need led to a really wonderful outcome,” explained Josh Perelman, NMAJH’s chief curator and director of exhibitions and collections.

The exhibition includes two films from the producers of the award-winning PBS documentary, “From Swastika to Jim Crow,” which captures the voices of the scholars and their students. Over 70 evocative artifacts and documents, including the work of fine arts instructor Viktor Lowenfeld (“Slave With a Burden”) and his student John Biggers (“The Gleaners”), highlight the lasting relationships formed in these institutions and the instructors’ impact on their students’ work. The exhibition explores what it meant to students to have these new faculty members as part of their community, how the students were affected by their presence, and what life was like for white European Jews teaching at Black colleges and universities during World War II.

“I can’t imagine a more appropriate way to illustrate this uplifting example of the connection between the African-American and Jewish communities in this country,” said Ivy L. Barsky, museum director and CEO. “And it’s a story that most have never heard. As a result, the exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to build bridges in the community and collaborate with Philadelphia’s African American Museum and other colleague organizations, and tease out the stories of courage, of leadership and of the power of good mentoring relationships.”
