Education / NOUN Graduates 17,369 Students, 51 Inmates At 14th Convocation by Fineman2: 5:29pm On Apr 12
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) announced on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, that 17,420 students have been cleared to participate in its 14th convocation ceremony. This follows their completion of required academic and non-academic responsibilities.

NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olufemi Peters, shared this at a press conference in Abuja heralding the event. He noted that the total includes 51 inmates—41 undergraduates and 10 postgraduates—from various correctional centres who have met their academic requirements. The convocation is set for this weekend.

Peters provided a breakdown: 16,964 undergraduates, 6,413 postgraduates, and 40 PhD students will graduate. Among undergraduates, 16 will earn First Class degrees, 1,417 will receive Second Class Upper, 5,518 Second Class Lower, 2,761 Third Class, and 158 Pass degrees. For Nursing Science, 1,117 students will graduate, with 12 achieving Distinction, 490 earning Credit, and 615 receiving Pass degrees.

The Vice-Chancellor praised the graduates’ determination. “I congratulate the graduating students for their doggedness, resilience, and commitment to their academic and non-academic responsibilities that culminated in their graduation at the 14th convocation ceremony,” he said.

IPOB Condemns Massacre Of 18 Persons In Imo State Community, Blames Govt Elements, Simon Ekpa

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has distanced itself and its “security arm”, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) from the recent attacks and killings in some communities in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.

The IPOB in a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful on Tuesday, condemned in strongest terms the massacre where no fewer than 18 people were killed by a group of gunmen, describing it as barbaric.

“We commiserate with the families of those who lost their loved ones. IPOB remains committed in the fight against sponsored criminality and terrorism to destabilise Alaigbo and to blackmail IPOB and ESN,” Powerful stated

No fewer than 18 people had reportedly been killed in coordinated attacks by gunmen in several communities in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, on Sunday, December 29, 2024.

The killings reportedly occurred in Umukabia, Eziawa, Ihittenasa, Umuhu, Amaoku, and Amaebe, all communities within Orsu Local Government Area.

The former Chairman of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof Chidi Odinkalu, who hails from Orsu, had drawn attention to the incident via his X-handle where he posted about the incident.

IPOB said that there was a voiceover in a viral video accusing a group known as Umuoma as being responsible for an attack and killing of at least 30 people in a community IPOB identified as Orsuihiteukwa community in Orsu Local Government Area.

The IPOB spokesperson said, “The sponsored voiceover in the viral video of the senseless slaughter of innocent people in Orsuihiteukwa community in Imo State accused a group that call themselves "Umuoma" as responsible for the dastardly act and not ESN or IPOB volunteers. But the treacherous voiceover also questioned the relevance of ESN Operatives.

“This government paid faceless persons behind the voiceover in the viral video not only discredited ESN but indirectly accused ESN for not acting to save our people. ESN wants to keep all Biafran communities safe, even if the community is hostile to them.

“For public records, ESN remains ESN without any nickname. The so-called "Umuoma" are the same criminals as the Biafra Liberation Army under the control of the Biafra Government in Exile (BGIE) with Butuzor as their notorious commander.”

Powerful further stated, “The leaders of these notorious criminal gangs terrorising and killing innocent people in Imo State are the buffoon in the Finland Prison, Ngozi Orabueze in the USA, and others.

“These criminals have no relationship with IPOB or ESN. These murderous criminals have the backing of the Nigerian government and some South Eastern politicians.

“They were recruited, funded, and sponsored to impersonate and to blackmail IPOB and ESN as a splinter group. But they failed in their agenda because IPOB remains one indivisible family.

“Today many of the criminals are on the run while their remnants still hiding in some bushes in Imo State are on rampage killing the villagers because the people asked Butuzo and their criminal gang to vacate their land and stop staying in their bushes while claiming that they are liberating Biafra.

“The question everyone should be asking is, why are these criminals carrying out their violent and barbaric activities mostly in Imo State and a few neighboring communities in Anambra State?

“Is it not obvious that the government in Imo State is an accomplice to the insecurity and senseless killing of civilians in the state?”

He stressed, “The Nigeria government must leave IPOB and ESN out of their sponsored killings. IPOB members and ESN Operatives do not get involved in any violence against anyone except the marauding Fulani terrorists when they try to occupy our farmlands.

“IPOB remains a peaceful movement fighting for Biafra liberation using non-violence and civil disobedience means to press for Biafra Independence. We reject and condemn any violence against Ndigbo in general.

“Those blaming ESN over the soulless killing in Orsuihitukwa by criminals like Umuoma should stop and blame the Nigerian government and her governors from the East and her security forces and their proxy Igbo politicians who recruited the criminals and provided cover for them.

“The Nigerian military and police cannot deny their knowledge of the location of these criminals and their notorious camp called "Valley" in Orsu Local Government Area that has been in existence for over 3 years.

“IPOB insists that the soulless murderers that committed the genocidal act against our own people in Orsuihitukwa in Imo State were recruited by the Nigerian government in collaboration with some Igbo politicians.

“The aim is to use their violent and murderous activities against genuine Biafra agitation led by IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Once again, IPOB condemns in the strongest term the recent barbaric massacre of innocent Biafrans in Imo State.

“Those criminals masquerading as Biafran agitators who are killing and kidnapping our people will meet their waterloo very soon. The blood of the innocent Biafrans and the spirit of the land will speak against them.

“IPOB is pleading with the Nigerian government and the Imo State government to stop using state actors and other non-state actors to continue shedding innocent blood of Ndigbo in their desperation to blackmail IPOB and ESN.”

I agree with NOUN VC

But I have a problem with FG regarding NOUN, it seems the federal government isn't doing enough for this school that has been around since early 2000, the largest university in Nigeria in terms of students enrollment, the government is only interested in making money from the students instead of making the school stand out and more attractive.

With the right facilities and infrastructure in place, NOUN students will compete well with their foreign counterparts

What exactly does it take to address all the issues in this great school that government cannot do?

Education / Distance Learning, Future Of Education – NOUN VC by Fineman2: 9:28pm On Jan 11
Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Prof. Olufemi Peters has said Open and Distance Learning represents the future of education globally.

Speaking during the 27th Matriculation Ceremony, held both virtually and physically, at various NOUN study centres nationwide, Peters welcomed the new students and highlighted the transformative potential of ODL in bridging the gap to quality education.

“Our mode of education empowers students to learn at their own pace, balancing education with work and family responsibilities,” Peters said. “NOUN is bridging the gap in access to quality higher education, ensuring inclusivity for all Nigerians, regardless of age, location, or circumstance.”

Peters described NOUN’s ODL model as “revolutionary”, particularly in a world increasingly driven by digital innovation and the need for flexible learning systems.

He noted that NOUN stands out from traditional universities by offering unmatched flexibility without compromising on quality, with its programmes rigorously accredited and its graduates highly employable.

The new intake is 18,106 for undergraduate programmes, 5,196 for postgraduate programmes, 10 for MPhil, and 32 for PhD programmes.

“Our model has shown that education can transcend geographical barriers, making learning a right and not a privilege.

“This system proves that educational excellence does not require physical presence in a classroom,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor further urged the new students to strive for excellence.

“Let this moment be a commitment to not just meet but exceed the standards set before you. NOUN is not just about completing a degree; it’s about transforming lives through education.”

The matriculation ceremony also featured the administration of the matriculation oath by NOUN Registrar, Mr. Oladipo Ajayi, marking the formal induction of the students into the university.

Celebrities / Re: I Was Raped Five Times, Iyabo Ojo Opens Up About Abuse by Fineman2: 12:09pm On Jan 04
Ishilove:

You just made me remember a man who belonged to the same religious organization with us, way back then. We called him 'uncle' even though he was in no way related to us.

Anytime I and my sister were with this man in his house, he had no qualms about undressing around us, two pre-teen girls, under the guise of "you are my children." One particular day, he exposed his underpants to us when he was adjusting his wrapper and we saw something that looked like a pestle at 90 degrees in that area. We were too young to understand what we just saw, and it was many years later that we realized he deliberately exposed his erection to us. Someone like that could have raped either my sister or I if we were ever alone with him. Thank God, my sister, who is older felt very uncomfortable with this particular last display. She didn't know why, but she just felt creeped out and after that day we never stepped our legs there again.

And we never told our mum. Why? I have no idea. I guess we never quite understood the danger we were in. I was about 9 or 10 when this was happening.

When we told our mum, years later, she was shocked and furious and said the man was lucky she didn't have his contact details again, otherwise she would have given him the disgrace of his life.

Thunder sha will faya you wherever you are, Uncle Udoh.

I'm narrating this because you mentioned the several conversations you have had with your girl child about predators. I never had such a conversation with my parents, which is why I and my sister did not recognize our so-called 'uncle' for what he was. Thank God he never got the chance to molest us.
thank God for you and your sister

Celebrities / I Was Raped Five Times, Iyabo Ojo Opens Up About Abuse by Fineman2: 9:15am On Jan 04
Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, also known as Queen Mother has opened up about some personal and traumatic experiences from her childhood.

In a conversation with her colleague Biola Bayo on the talk show, Talk to B, which was shared on Friday, Ojo revealed that she had been raped five times.

She highlighted the prevalence of rape apologists in society and stated that she would hold anyone, even her own son, accountable if accused of such a crime.

“I was raped five times in my life. I discovered we have a lot of rape apologists. I don’t care who the person is; if that person is my son, I am going to come for him unapologetically,” she declared.

Iyabo also revealed that her father disowned her when she insisted on marrying her late husband.

“The only time I lacked was when I insisted this was the man I was going to get married to because, at that time, my dad and I disowned each other.

She spoke about how her father struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, which ultimately led to his death at the young age of 40.

“My dad did everything, alcohol and drugs, so it messed him up at a young age. He died at 40,” she added.

Reflecting on her early years, Iyabo disclosed that she was raised by her grandmother and only met her mother when she was around seven years old.

“I grew up with my grandmother, who is half Delta and half Igbo. I think I was seven before I knew my mother,” she added.
