Second Republic vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme has revealed that the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan initiated the plan to transfer Boko Haram detainees to Aguata Prisons in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area, LGA, of Anambra State. He however noted that the idea was resisted and protested by the people, causing the past administration to backtrack. Addressing journalists at Aguluzigbo, Anaocha LGA of Anambra State during the end of tenure Thanksgiving Ceremony of Chief Victor Umeh as APGA Chairman, Chief Ekwueme said, “I am aware that the plan of bringing Boko Haram detainees to Aguata prisons in Ekwulobia came up a while ago and there was reasonable protest to the then President, Jonathan against it and he dropped the plan. “I was out of the country when I heard that Boko Haram detainees were brought to Aguata Prisons in Ekwulobia, Anambra State. I started wondering how the idea of bringing them to the South East and my local government area came up again after the people thought the matter had been rested. http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/22/jonathan-plotted-relocation-of-boko-haram-inmates-to-anambra-ekwueme/

igawa State chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Ado Sani Kiri, has debunked the allegations that the state government masterminded the arrest of former Governor Sule Lamido and his sons by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, describing it as a callous and unfounded allegation. Former Governor Sule Lamido being led to prison yesterday in Kano. FILE PHOTO: Former Governor Sule Lamido being led to prison in Kano. Kiri, who reacted against the allegation while interacting with journalists in Babura, the hometown of Governor Badaru Abubakar, said his party had no hand whatsoever in the arrest of the former governor. According to him, APC has not even filed any petition against the embattled former governor. He said Lamido’s travail began in 2012 when he led some governors to form new PDP and betrayed former President Goodluck Jonathan. He said since that time, the PDP-led Federal government started witchhunting him to the extent that two of his sons were arrested and charged with money laundering by a Federal High Court sitting in Kano where the first son, Aminu Sule Lamido, was convicted, having been found guilty of money laundering. ‘’To say APC has hands in the arrest of Alhaji Lamido by some disgruntled elements is mere daydreaming. What connects APC with that case?”, he queried. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/apc-has-no-hands-in-lamido-sons-arrest/#sthash.eiiGhZ0t.dpuf

Over 20 Civil Society Organisations on Tuesday barricaded the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja, calling for the sacking of its chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde. The CSOs, under the aegis of the Coalition of Civil Liberties and Equity, besieged the Abuja office of EFCC, alleging that the commission had been compromised by a powerful cabal made up of politicians. The coalition, therefore, advised that for the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to successfully tackle corruption in Nigeria, there was a need to sack Lamorde. Some of the placards carried by the protesters read: “Sack Lamorde now,” “Cabals have hijacked EFCC,” “Buhari merge EFCC, ICPC now,” Lamorde has been compromised”, among others. The leader of the protesters, Stanley Onukwufor, expressed disappointment in Lamorde. He said, “We cannot take it again. The EFCC ought to be a good agency. It did well in the past and prosecuted corrupt people. But it has turned into something else. So many things have happened. Things have gone wrong. We have a President who wants change and wants things turned around. “We are out to let Nigerians know that we want change in the EFCC. The only thing the EFCC does is to arrest little thieves. What about the former governors who looted the treasuries of their respective states? Why is the EFCC not prosecuting them? Most of these politicians are known to be corrupt. The EFCC takes some of them to court and that is where everything ends. Lamorde must go in order to bring change in the EFCC.” But the spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, described the protesters as a group which wanted to mislead Nigerians and distract the agency. He said, “My sincere advice to Nigerians is to ignore these so-called CSOs. We should not allow a group of misguided elements to assault our collective sensibilities with a choreographed protest paid for by corrupt persons being prosecuted by the EFCC. “The era when Nigerians were easily deceived by rented crowds is over. Any discerning mind could see through the selfish motive of the group. Why is it that they did not see any reason to call for the removal of Lamorde all these years until he moved against their patrons? What is the bias in charging a person indicted by a corruption investigation to court? Instead of visiting the indignity of the spectacle of rented CSOs on the nation, they should go and face their trial in court.” http://www.punchng.com/news/protesters-block-efcc-office-want-lamorde-sacked/

The All Progressives Congress and the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Bayelsa State have criticised Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson over the recent approval granted by the state House of Assembly to obtain a N25bn loan. Though it is believed that the loan was meant for the completion of ongoing projects in the state, the opposition parties said the purpose of the loan was suspicious and criminal. The APC, through its Ward Chairman in Kolokuma/Opokuma, Abiye Stephen, commended the Minority Leader and the member representing Brass Constituency 2, Sunny Igoli, for not being present during deliberations on the loan approval by Assembly members. He said the processes and purpose for the loan was suspicious and criminal. On his part, APGA Chairman, from Southern Ijaw Local Government, Ward 16, Fredrick Kuffor, said the decision to obtain a N25bn facility for purposes of completion of projects less than few months from the expiration of Dickson’s tenure was a deliberate diversion of state fund for PDP campaigns. He said, “The processes adopted to obtain the approval is criminal and the purpose it is meant for is deceitful. How do you describe these actions by the State Assembly and the Governor? “This is a criminal way of obtaining money and using it for his bid for second term. He is trying to have a send forth package for himself with our money. “How can he say he wants to use the money to complete these listed projects? Have you forgotten that he said he has completed the payment of some of the listed projects? Where is the money he said he saved for Bayelsa people?” The State House of Assembly had last Thursday approved the request by Dickson to obtain N25bn loan for the completion of ongoing projects. The approval, which was read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Kombowei Benson, was sought by Dickson to enable his government to complete some ongoing projects in the state. Among the projects highlighted in the Governor’s request letter were, the Ogbia-Nembe-Brass Road, the Sagbama-Ekeremor Road, the Yenagoa-Oporoma Road, the New Yenagoa Gateway-Igbogene Road, the Yenagoa Ring Road, the Opolo-Elebele Road, the Isaac Boro Road, among others. The lawmakers unanimously approved the loan request which the Leader of the House, Peter Akpe, and a few others described as long-overdue. http://www.punchng.com/news/apc-apga-tackle-dickson-over-n25bn-loan-approval/

Barack Obama will welcome Nigeria’s freshly elected president to the White House Monday, lending a personal endorsement after the country’s first ever democratic transition. Obama’s administration has faced criticism for not including the continent’s most populous country on a Africa tour later this week that will take in Kenya and Ethiopia. By hosting Muhammadu Buhari in the Oval Office, the US president hopes to underscore that the African giant, also the continent’s biggest economy, is vital US interests. Praise for Nigeria’s recent elections — the first won by an opposition challenger against an incumbent — is likely to be coupled with tricky discussions on combating Boko Haram militants. Nigeria would like to see more help from Washington in its battle against the group, which has been trying to establish an Islamic state in northeast Nigeria since 2009. So far 15,000 people have been killed and 1.5 million displaced by the conflict. Buhari’s visit has been foreshadowed by a uptick in terror attacks, including suicide bombings in neighboring Cameroon and Chad. Rights groups say atrocities have been committed both by Boko Haram and the Nigerian military. US laws banning the transfer of weapons to countries suspected of rights abuses have sometimes pushed a wedge between the two allies. Obama’s administration last year blocked the sale of Cobra attack helicopters to Nigeria, hampering cooperation amid efforts to find the hundreds of still-unfound kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls. Since being elected in May, Buhari has indicated a readiness to address problems in the army he once ran as a general and as Nigeria’s military ruler. Earlier this month Buhari sacked his entire military top brass. Buhari’s purge of senior commanders inherited from his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan was widely expected but is the clearest demonstration yet of his quest for a fresh start. Still, Obama is unlikely to endorse a dramatic ramping up of US military activity against Boko Haram — fearing it could be used by the group as a recruiting tool and entangle the United States in yet another conflict. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/obama-welcomes-nigerias-buhari-to-white-house/#sthash.MSBIDnRy.dpuf |

Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Monday denied speculations that that his administration was planning to sack 10,000 workers. Aregbesola in a statement by his media aide, Semiu Okanlawon, said in Osogbo that “the so-called plan’’ to sack 10,000 workers is a figment of an imagination by the opposition party in the state. According to the statement, nowhere has the Aregbesola administration signifies any intention to sack any worker. “The workers’ sack speculation was part of the opposition party calculated move to misinform workers, confuse them and demoralise them. “Discerning and decent people have come to the conclusion that when opposition makes any allegation, you must quickly dismiss it as being in its character to fabricate falsehood to confuse unsuspecting masses. “This latest falsehood is part of the opposition tactics to misinform workers, confuse them and demoralise them. Nowhere has the Aregbesola’s administration signified any intention to sack any worker.
