Science/Technology / Avast Acquires Rival AVG For $1.3 Billion by fk4real22(m): 6:19pm On Jul 07, 2016
Avast has announced plans to acquire AVG in a $1.3 billion deal that will combine the antivirus products of both companies.

On Thursday, the Prague, Czech Republic-based company said an agreement has been reached that will see AVG bought out in an all-cash deal, made possible through cash on hand and debt financing.
Avast will offer $25 per share to AVG investors, a premium of over 30 percent on current trading prices.

In a press release, Avast said the deal would give the antivirus provider a combined network of over 400 million endpoints, 160 million of which are mobile. These will "act as de facto sensors, providing information about malware to help detect and neutralize new threats as soon as they appear," according to the firm.

Using this data, Avast will then be able to boost its security and privacy products, and emerging markets such as security for internet of things devices are of particular interest.

"We believe that joining forces with Avast, a private company with significant resources, fully supports our growth objectives and represents the best interests of our stockholders," said Gary Kovacs, CEO of AVG, in a statement. "Our new scale will allow us to accelerate investments in growing markets and continue to focus on providing comprehensive and simple-to-use solutions for consumers and businesses, alike."

The buyout has been approved by the Avast management and supervisory boards, and AVG's boards has recommended that AVG shareholders accept the deal.

The transaction is expected to close between September 15 and October 15 this year, depending on the results of regulatory reviews.

Car Talk / Ferrari Unviels The 2017 Laferrari Convertible And It's Already Sold Out by fk4real22(m): 10:29pm On Jul 05, 2016
The convertible version of Ferrari’s incredible LaFerrari supercar is finally here. Well, three pictures of it, anyway. There’s a lot we don’t know about the car including the price, the name, the technical characteristics, how many will be sold, or when it will be available.

We do know that it will have the same engines as the original LaFerrari, including 949 combined horsepower from its 6.3-liter V12 and its 120 kW electric motor, as well as identical performance figures including a 0-60 time of 2.4 seconds and a top-speed of 217 mph.

"Significant and extensive modifications" have been made to the open-top LaFerrari to retain the same stiffness as the coupe version, and the aerodynamics have been improved to deliver the same drag coefficient even when the roof is removed. The car will come with both a carbon fiber hard top and soft top.

Ferrari says the name, price, and other information on the car will be announced at the Paris Motor Show in October. It won’t really matter, though: all examples of the car have already been sold to hand-picked Ferrari owners.

Science/Technology / Blackberry Quits The Manufacture BB10 Blackberry Classic Smartphone by fk4real22(m): 10:21pm On Jul 05, 2016
Former mobile phone giant BlackBerry has announced it will cease manufacturing its BB 10-powered BlackBerry Classic smartphone.

Though BlackBerry said that it will continue to support BlackBerry 10 devices through software updates, with version 10.3.3 scheduled for next month and another one next year, the fact that the company is killing one of its flagship designs is a symbolic move.

The BlackBerry Classic, which was launched in late 2014 as a replacement of sorts for the BBOS-powered Q20, sports the classic BlackBerry design with built-in QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen. But the times they are a-changin’, and BlackBerry is now looking to the future, saying that the Classic has “long surpassed the average lifespan for a smartphone” in today’s market. Ralph Pini, chief operating officer and general manager for devices at BlackBerry, said:

For BlackBerry, and more importantly for our customers, the hardest part in letting go is accepting that change makes way for new and better experiences.
When I took on the role as the GM for Devices, I spoke about three critical elements for the success of our devices business. First was expanding choice for customers. Second was leveraging our unmatched experience and capabilities in security. Third was building on the BlackBerry pedigree.
These are the tenets that help keep us focused and the reasons why we are committed to the success of both BlackBerry 10 and Android devices. To keep innovating and advancing our portfolio, we are updating our smartphone lineup with state of the art devices.

Though BlackBerry is still committing to BlackBerry 10 publicly, it’s clear that it’s fighting a losing battle. Government bodies have long used BlackBerry for the devices’ perceived security credentials, but just last week, news emerged that the U.S. Senate was to ditch BlackBerry in favor of Android and iOS devices. In the statement issued by the Senate last week, it said:

BlackBerry informed Verizon and AT&T that production of all BlackBerry OS 10 devices (Q10, Z10, Z30, Passport, and Classic) has been discontinued.

However, BlackBerry denied sending such a memo. Now, according to its latest statement, it will only officially stop making the Classic, though only time will tell whether this will extend to its other BB10 devices, too.

Science/Technology / Android N Is Now Officially Android Nougat by fk4real22(m): 8:57pm On Jul 02, 2016
The next major version of Google's mobile operating system, which has for long been known simply as Android N, now has its official name.

Continuing the tradition of naming Android versions after sweet treats and desserts, Android 7.0 has been given the name Android Nougat.

The announcement was made by Google through a variety of platforms, including through Android's official Twitter account. The statue design for the new operating system has also been revealed, with the green Android robot mascot standing on top of three nougat bars of different flavors.

The release, initially announced in March and currently on its second (and mostly stable) beta, brings new features like an improved notification shade and split-screen multitasking to the mobile OS, while also improving on features like Doze that came with Marshmallow last year. The release also has Daydream, Google's new VR platform, baked in, though it'll only be supported by Daydream-ready handsets running the OS.

Google took much of the tech world by surprise when it announced the OS in March – two months before its I/O developer conference – and even more so by making the Developer Preview available to test immediately.

Since initially launching the preview programme, Google has been working with manufacturers such as Sony to make it available for a wider range of devices, including the Xperia Z3.

Programming / Google Parners With Udacity To Provide Android Programming Course For Beginners by fk4real22(m): 12:48am On Jun 23, 2016
Google wants more people to learn to program — especially for its Android platform. While the company already offered a few programming courses, they were typically geared toward students with at least some rudimentary programming experience.

Starting today, the Google Android Basics Nanodegree class is available on the online learning platform Udacity. It’s the first Android nanodegree class designed by Google for people with no programming experience at all.

“Google, in partnership with Udacity, is making Android development accessible and understandable to everyone, so that regardless of your background, you can learn to build apps that improve the lives of people around you,” Shanea King-Roberson, program manager at Google, said in a blog post.

The new series of courses teaches how to build simple Android apps. Specifically, it covers layouts, interactivity, object-oriented programming basics, multi-screen apps, connecting to the Internet and data storage, among other topics.

The course requires 165 hours, or about 4 hours a day for 42 days, to be completed.

The first 50 students to complete the Android Basics Nanodegree will also be awarded with a full scholarship to continue the Career-Track Android Developer Nanodegree.

All of the individual courses that make up this program are available online at no charge. Udacity also provides paid services, including access to coaches, guidance on your project, help for staying on track, career counseling, and a certificate upon completion.

Google had already teamed up with Udacity to offer a free course in Android development, but that class required a basic understanding of programming starting with lesson one.

Since there are over 1 billion Android devices worldwide, the demand for basic apps to learn how to code in Android could rapidly increase.

Science/Technology / Sony Boss Confirms The Playstation 4 ‘neo’ Is Real, But Won’t Show It At E3 by fk4real22(m): 2:41am On Jun 11, 2016
In an interview with the Financial Times, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and global chief executive Andrew House confirmed that the PlayStation 4 ‘Neo’ is real. But don’t expect to see it next week at the E3 conference in Los Angeles. House has said Sony doesn’t plan to unveil it at E3.

Rumors of a more powerful PlayStation 4 codenamed ‘Neo’ started emerging in March on Kotaku. The new console is supposed to be much more powerful than the existing PlayStation 4 in order to support more demanding games, and especially for the PlayStation VR headset.

Virtual reality is quite demanding when it comes to computing power. If you want a smooth experience, you need to run a game at a consistent frame rate above 60 frames per second. And because the screen in your VR headset is so close to your face, you want a good resolution as well. That’s why the PS4 can support the PlayStation VR, but the PS4 ‘Neo’ is the console you want for virtual reality (at least if you don’t have a beefy computer).

House basically confirmed all of these rumors and also said it would be a good console for people with a 4K TV, as the new PlayStation should be the first 4K-enabled console.

Now, let’s talk about the disappointing parts. First, rumor has it that Sony will launch this new PlayStation 4 before the holiday season. E3 seemed like a good opportunity to unveil the new device, but House gave this interview to the Financial Times just before E3 so people don’t get disappointed when Sony doesn’t talk about it during its press conference on Monday.

Second, the PS4 ’Neo’ is going to be more expensive than the existing $350 PlayStation 4. Both devices will remain in stores as the new console won’t replace the old.

Science/Technology / Instagram's Latest Update On Ios Makes Photo Sharing Faster And Easier by fk4real22(m): 10:48am On Jun 08, 2016
It’s been a long time coming: After almost a decade in existence, Instagram has finally added the ability to export photos directly to Instagram across all of iOS.

By using the mobile operating system’s baked-in Share Sheet extension, users can now upload photos and video directly to Instagram using the native sharing support.

Until now, it was only possible to upload photos and video to Instagram within the app itself, or through a third-party app that had specifically created an export option for Instagram.

Considering Instagram has recently pulled the metaphorical rug out from underneath third-party developers by limiting API access dramatically, it makes sense that it chooses to add this feature now.

Like sharing anything else using the iOS Share Sheet extension, Instagram’s new feature enables users to share photos and videos with just a few taps. Although accessible, the feature isn’t turned on by default, so to enable it, users will have to go into the Share Sheet “more” option and tap the slider to enable Instagram.

The new feature is very welcomed, but it isn’t without its flaws. Considering the basic structure of the Share Sheet interface, users can only add a caption to the imagery being uploaded. No tagging, no location, no editing, and so on.

As such, it’s great for convenience when time is of the essence, but for more robust posts, the best bet is to still go through the app itself.

Science/Technology / Facebook Is Making The Messanger App Compulsory For Android Users by fk4real22(m): 5:26am On Jun 04, 2016
It's been roughly two years since Facebook decided to strip the chat functionality from their smartphone app. Instead of letting users just download a single app for all of their Facebooking tasks, the company forced users to install a new app to chat, called Messenger. Of course, you could get around that by choosing to go to the mobile Facebook page and chatting there. But even that is coming to an end.

There are a lot of reasons why users might not want to install Facebook's Messenger app. It can be a drain on your battery, and it requests permissions for things like your microphone, which makes some people uneasy. Unfortunately, the company is trying their hardest to make sure that's your only option for using their chat service on your phone.

Android users are already getting notifications saying "Soon you'll only be able to view your messages from Messenger." And we've gotten reports that some Android users are already completely unable to ...

Science/Technology / Instagram Rolls Out New Algorithm That Puts The Best Posts First by fk4real22(m): 4:55am On Jun 04, 2016
Back in March, Instagram announced plans to re-order the feed of accounts you follow based on what you're likely to care about most. The idea is similar to with Facebook does with the News Feed: displaying posts that might interest you the most rather than showing content in chronological order.

A few days after the announcement, Instagram took to Twitter to let us know the algorithm-driven approach wasn't in place yet, but this week the company announced the feature is now rolling out to all users.

In a short blog post the company revealed that in the time since the March announcement, the small group of users who've been privy to the re-ordering were much more active in the app. Instagram says that "portion of the community" has been liking more photos and posting more comments. If you haven't already noticed the ...
