Killer of Yoruba Leader in Kano The long arms of the law have eventually caught up with twenty six-year old Abubakar Abdulrahman who killed a Kano-based business mogul and philanthropist, Alhaji Ganiyu Akanbi Bello at his residence in Race Course Road in Nasarawa Local Government Area of the state on t June 5 this year. Abubakar Abdulrahman said he killed the 86-year old Bello because the old man stopped him from stealing money from the house. Abubakar was a former employee of his victim but was sacked because he was in the habit of stealing money, Police said. Alhaji Bello before his death was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Centre of Excellence Hotel, Criss-Cross Hotels and Criss-Cross Oil Enterprises. He was also the Grand Patron of Yoruba Community In Kano and one-time acting Oba Yoruba in Kano. Abubakar’s confession: “I came to steal in his (Bbello’s) house but he recognized me. He was my former boss and has never wronged me. When I came inside the house, I never expected to meet him. “I killed him (Bello) because I am in need of money. He did not owe me, but I knew I will find money in his house. I sneaked in through the gate around 11 P.M. I hid somewhere within the compound until the wee hours in the morning when I gained entrance inside the room. I worked for him for about four years and he never owed me. “My mission in the house was to steal money. He recognized me and confronted me, asking why I came to the house. It was at that point that I attacked and left the compound.” The murderer who speaks English, Hausa and Yoruba fluently also claimed to have dropped out from Kano state Polytechnic. Abubakar was not looking worried and his countenance betrayed regret when he was paraded. Kano state Police Commissioner, Mr. Adenrele Shinaba told journalists that the suspect was arrested at his residence in Badawa Quarters, through some clues found at the scene of the crime. “He will be arraigned before the court as soon as investigation is completed,” Shinaba said. CP Shinaba also paraded three persons, Abubakar Umar, Aliyu Adamu and Mohammed Inuwa were arrested while impersonating as police officers. He said the impersonators had arrested an unsuspecting person along Ibrahim Taiwo Road and labeled him a terrorist by threatening to take him to their office if he refused to settle them. “In the process, they collected the sum of N1.3 million. They applied the same trick on another victim and collected the sum of N500, 000. On tip off, we arrested the suspects and the victims identified them. They have made confessional statements and mentioned three others now at large as members of their syndicate.” http://pointblanknews.com/pbn/exclusive/killer-yoruba-leader-kano-arrested/ |

From GBENGA ADESUYI,Ibadan There was pandemonium at the popular Bodija Market in Ibadan, Oyo State on Friday when Hausa and Yoruba beans traders clashed. The traders of the two ethnic stock clashed over disagreement on the sale of beans in the market. As a result of the confusion, traders and customers hurriedly left the market so as not to be caught in the clash. Though no life was lost in the clash due to the prompt intervention of security operatives, but properties, including cars, truck conveying beans from the North, pepper, beans, fruit and other market products were destroyed. It was gathered that tension has heightened in the market after the June 5, 2013 killing of 10 beans traders by Boko Haram members in the North. After the killing, the Ibadan Foodstuff Traders Association placed an indefinite ban on travelling to the North to purchase beans on its members. It was gathered that despite the ban, Hausa traders still brought beans from the North to the market and sell at very exorbitant prices. The situation worsened as a bag of beans has rose from N11,000 to N20,000 Owing to this, a peace meeting between the two tribes was called by the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa. It was after the meeting that fighting broke out between the two tribes. After returning from the peace parley at the Oyo State Police Command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, it was gathered that beans sellers from the North took delivery of three trailers of their commodity. But on sighting the three trailer loads of beans, there was a violent reaction from the Yorubas traders in the market. This later spread to the whole market. As a result of the confusion, the whole market was deserted,. A combined team of riot policemen and the Oyo State Government security outfit, Operation Burst, chased people away from the market. Many people were seen with their hands up in strict obedience to order of the security operatives. Akeem Emiola, the Public Relations Officer of the Ibadan Foodstuff Sellers Association, confirmed the violent clash to Sun News Online. Emiola said: “No one from the association ordered reprisal attack on the Hausas.” He added that nobody could explain the cause of the pandemonium. He said after the meeting with Indabawa, no one expected any violence. |

A bloody clash between some Hausa and Yoruba in Ibese, Yewa North Local Government of Ogun State on Wednesday claimed the lives of three persons and left no fewer than 30 vehicles burnt. Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the crisis on Thursday, learnt that the violent clash between the members of the two ethnic groups began on Wednesday night following a disagreement between two unidentified men over a commercial sex worker. The violence was said to have later escalated and became an inter-tribal crisis. About 25 articulated vehicles, three cars and five motorcycles were said to have been destroyed in the violence. Also, almost all the shops in the nearby market were reportedly looted. Residents of the busy town were said to have fled the community. Armed policemen were deployed in the troubled town to forestall further break down of law and order while an Armoured Personnel Carrier was seen stationed in front of the Dangote Cement Factory located within the community. The Chairman of the task force in the affected market, Sikirulah Akinsola, confirmed to newsmen that the violence erupted due to a disagreement between two persons over a commercial sex worker. Akinsola, who also doubles as the Bada Orile of Ijako Village, a suburb of the town, said more than 200 persons of Yoruba extraction who felt aggrieved by the alleged killing of their kinsman had decided to demonstrate on the streets when the crisis erupted. According to him, one Kehinde had also allegedly been killed last May by a suspected Hausa man in the town. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the incident, but said no one was killed. Adejobi, an assistant superintendent of police however said the violence in the town had nothing to do with ethnicity. He said, “It was caused by a prostitute and some of the drivers had a problem with some men who claimed to be Ibese indigenes. There was no ethnic colouration. There was no casualty and only 14 vehicles were burnt.” http://www.osundefender.org/?p=33960 |

No fewer than two people reportedly died while property worth millions of naira were destroyed following a clash between Fulani traders and Yoruba natives of Oro-Ago in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. Our correspondent gathered on Wednesday that some irate youths allegedly razed at least five vehicles and 10 motorcycles said to be owned by some Fulani people in the ensuing pandemonium. A source, who pleaded anonymity for fear of attack, told journalists in Ilorin that the mayhem was allegedly caused by Fulani-Bororo settlers who, allegedly flouted a rule in the area that the settlers should never bring arms, ammunition and fighting sticks from their settlements to market on Oro Ago market days. He stated that some armed Fulani traders came to the market on Monday. He added that the vigilance team and hunters in the area accosted them, seized the weapons from them and later kept them at a place in Oro Ago town. The source said the leader of the Fulani people in the area, popularly called Serikin Fulani, surprisingly stormed the place where the ammunition were kept with his people, carted away the weapons seized by the vigilance team and handed them back to the Fulani traders. The source said the hunters and vigilance team attempted to retrieve the re-captured weapons from the Fulani people. According to him, violent clash erupted between the two camps, leading to a breakdown of laws and order as weapons were allegedly used freely by the warring parties. Police Public Relations Officer, Kwara State Police Command, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, said it was untrue that seven people were killed during the clash. claimed that two people were killed. added that security operatives had restored normalcy to the area as, according to him, people have resumed normal socio-economic life and are going about their normal business unmolested. http://www.punchng.com/news/two-die-as-fulani-yoruba-clash-in-kwara/ |
