[i]By Fola Ademosu As President Bola Tinubu declares a nationwide security emergency to curtail the resurgent terrorist attacks, an insight into one of the most dreaded architects of terrorism in the country, Abubakar Shekau, has emerged. The report by investigative website HumAngle catalogued Shakau’s growing up days and his transformation from a footballer and perfume seller to becoming a ruthless, bloodthirsty international terrorist. “Babson” – the young, skilled footballer, whose talent anyone could hardly ignored on the dusty football fields in Yobe, and in Maiduguri, Borno – would ironically turn out to be the merciless Shekau who led the horrific killings of scores of security forces, Christian and Muslims – and even some of his own fighters. However, the report provides an interesting human angle to Shekau’s complex personality. Growing up in under his disciplinarian father, who was a local district imam, Shekau’s moniker ‘Babson’ echoed across the playgrounds. “He was a familiar face on the village’s dusty football fields,” his childhood friend said. Off the football pitch, he lived a “modest and solitary” life, pedaling his “rickety Spilley bicycle” to hawk humble wares of perfume, straddled on his back. Shekau’s duality, as painted in the report, presents a chilling study in the human study for both generosity and gruesome evil. ( READ: https://thecornetnews.com/what-nigerians-never-knew-about-boko-harams-warlord-abubakar-shekau/) The well-known hideous, violent and remorseless criminal was ironically a “generous warlord”, according to the report. On occasions, Shekau would inquire about relatives and associates struggling to survive. “When he learned that someone was struggling, he often sent financial support — sometimes through trusted couriers carrying envelopes of euros or U.S. dollars, and occasionally even small gold bars,” the report said. It adds, “These resources, believed to have originated from ransom payments and other illicit dealings, were part of the group’s growing underground economy.” Shekau’s wealth had helped him “not only to sustain loyalty among his followers but also to lure back those who had left.” “His generosity was both a gesture of kinship and a calculated strategy for consolidating influence”, the report said while citing the case of Mamman Nur, a senior figure who initially abandoned the group before 2009. Nur relocated to Cameroon, where he struggled to eke a living as a commercial motorcycle operator. When Shekau learned of Nur’s plight, he sent for him, promising him power and money. When he rejoined the terrorist group, Shekau elevated Nur to a senior leadership position, granted him access to funds and logistical networks. Despite portraying himself as invincible, the sun set on Shekau in May 2021. A fierce attack by rival terror group, the Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP), between the 18th and 19th of May 2021 led Shekau trigger his suicide vest - in a display of bravery – rather than surrendering to his assailants. ...Having served as a lecturer and student advisor for over a decade, I have encountered numerous instances of ‘ghost’ students within educational institutions. These individuals, though not spectral beings, are essentially fake students who either gained improper admission, deliberately forged admission letters or students’ ID cards or were removed from the school’s records due to academic deficiencies. Rather than returning home, these ghost students linger on campuses, squandering valuable time. With the advent of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), fake students pose a significant concern. While I have faith in NELFUND’s ability to address this problem through a diligent verification process, my apprehension lies in the repercussions of this grim reality on the affected students, their families, and society. The Center for Consumer Concerns and Awareness Initiatives (CCCI) has renewed its call to regulatory agencies, such as the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), to enforce strict product-monitoring. The call comes in the wake of the recent online firestorms on proliferation of adulterated fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and other affected products in the market. The online outrage and concern over the safety of consumers definitely resonate with CCCI's consistent advocacy for effective check by relevant bodies after products have hit the market. The Center believes that regulators, by so doing, would be able to curb the activities of counterfeiters and unscrupulous corporates who shortchange consumers. The Center said that it investigated and discovered non-compliance to product-ingredients composition standards. |
