This has been baffling my innocent mind.Looking at the rate at which very young secondary school students tread the sex life without knowing anything about it and making heart breaking mistakes in the process which might mar their smooth life. Nairalanders do you think teaching sex education very early as a subject in sec sch could help reduce this? |
Marijuana one of the leading drug banned in several countries and it consumption is abused by several people. Even though many countries ban the use of marijuana some countries legalize its use. More than 20 states in the U.S.A legalize the use of marijuana for medical purpose this decision may be due to its importance to health. The benefits availed from medical marijuana are: Prevents or cures Glaucoma Marijuana has the ability to prevent glaucoma or even cure patients. Glaucoma causes an increase in fluid pressure on the eyeball that could lead to the damage of the optic nerve and might cause blindness. According to National Eye institute “Studies were done in the early 1970s to show that when marijuana is smoked it reduces the intraocular pressure of the eyes in normal and those suffering from glaucoma. NEI supported further research beginning in 1978 that showed that marijuana when smoked, administered orally or intravenously reduces intraocular pressure of the eye because the normal medication is more effective than marijuana it is preferable to use the standard therapies for glaucoma treatment because further studies are needed to be done on marijuana”. Reduces Epileptic seizures Study from Virginia Commonwealth University showed that cannabinoid one of the active ingredients in marijuana helps in controlling spontaneous seizures in epileptic patients. Prevents Cancer spread Cannabinol aids in the turning off of id-1 gene. The gene that helps in continual spread of cancer cells in the body. Turning off the gene could help in reducing the outspread of cancer in the body. It was propounded from a study by researchers in California Pacific Center in San Francisco in 2007. Retrains Alzheimer's progression Tetrahydrocannibiol an active ingredient in cannabis inhibits the enzyme that produces the plague that kills brain cells in Alzheimer's patients. This leads to the hindrance in the progression of Alzheimer. The study was carried out in 2006 and published in journal of Molecular Pharmaceutics. is equivalent to that of addict smokers, especially when exposed to regularly. Children are more vulnerable compared to adults. It debilitates children health more rapidly than adult. Cigarette contains about 4000 chemicals and about 51 are carcinogenic. When smokers smoke not all the chemical constituents are absorbed by the body some are exhaled with the smoke. This exhaled smoke contains about 51 chemicals that are carcinogenic. Those smoking are protected from some of these chemicals due to the presence of filter on the tip of the cigarette which filters off some of these chemicals that mars one's health. Nonsmokers that inhale cigarette smoke absorb it all because they lack the presence of any filter. Second hand smoke has led to early death of many and provocation of some others health leading to disease development. In pregnant women, second hand smoke causes, low birth weight, still births, babies with impaired lung function, mental retardation, miscarriages. Moreover, research has shown that women who have been exposed to second hand smoke has 69% higher risk of having heart disease and 50% higher risk of stroke than those who haven't been exposed. Children of parents who smoke have high tendency of having increased frequency of respiratory infections and asthma. Smoke absorption makes the blood platelet thicker, increases the level of LDL and also destroys the lining of the blood vessels, thus causing cardiovascular diseases and stroke. People who breaths in second hand smoke regularly have their lung synonymous to that of a person that smokes one to ten cigarettes per day. About 53000 persons dies of second hand smoke yearly and also 37000 nonsmokers dies of heart disease yearly courtesy of inhalation of second hand smoke. Smoking should be curtailed and if the crave is so immense that the habit cannot be restrained the smoker should smoke in a private place to regulate exposure to nonsmokers. National Youth Service Corp was propounded by General Yakubu Gowon on 22nd May 1973 after the fatal civil war. In other to unify Nigerians, confluence the ethnicity and cultures of different people and also for the better development of Nigeria. During this 1 year service to the country, there is a 3 weeks orientation camp experienced by corp members, this camp promotes the association of different people from diverse backgrounds, cultures to mingle when undergoing several activities in camp. This camp fosters the development of 2 main habits that is key to health betterment. The two main habits are: (1) Exercise (2) Normal sleep EXERCISE Every morning corp members undergo exercise which is beneficial to ones health because several advantages could be derived from regular exercise. (1) Curb diseases (2) Weight control (3). Prevent cardiovascular diseases (4) Mood improvement If corp members could persist this habit imbibed in them. It would foster improved daily productivity. NORMAL SLEEP The orientation camp facilitates adequate sleep and hinders excessive sleep. Light out by 10pm and waking up of corp members by 5am makes sleep a normal and adequate one. 8 hours sleep daily for adult is good for their health. Adequate sleep promotes: (1) Improves cardiovascular functions (2) Prevents some diseases e.g. cancer (3) Improves brain power (4) Controls body weight Waking early is good for the efficient alertness of the body and preparing impeccably for the day ahead. Undergoing this process for 3 weeks with the aid of will power is good enough for a corp member to continue this habit and gain the benefits derived from it. Humans wish they could live young forever but aging mars the wish. Humans grow until a certain age when the body metabolic processes start deteriorating accompanied by conspicuous changes in the physical appearance with obvious wrinkling of the skin, several diseases start emerging, and several other changes. No one would escape the aging process. Interestingly, it is possible to better the aging course. This depends on the genetic make-up, lifestyle and nutrition. Knowing what to do in moderating aging is of our own betterment. Researchers have done several work to know how to slow-down the aging process. Calorie restriction and adequate nutrition is a very good way to ameliorate the production of pro-oxidant and consumption of fibers when calorie is restricted is good for satiety and it can also prevent cancer and type 2 diabetes. What we consume determines how we age. Consumption of fruits and vegetables like deep red tomatoes, blueberries, leafy greens, carrots which contain antioxidants that curtail the development of unstable molecules that could damage the cells, Antioxidants in grapes, red wine lower the odds of cancer and heart disease development and premature aging. Omega-3-fatty acids in fishes offer many anti-aging benefits. Salmon, lake trout or tuna are good sources. Whey protein is very useful; it could imitate the advantages of calorie restriction. Pimples is more pronounced in adolescent and adults, it is caused by the infection on the sebaceous gland leading to the production of pus from the pore subsequently causing inflammation and swelling. The smooth fresh skin gets deteriorated when impacted with pimples making it unpleasant to sight and mars the self-esteem of some people. There are several lotions used to cure this infection due to the several properties they possess. Interestingly, there are natural home remedies that could invoke the suppression and removal of pimples. The natural remedies and how they can be used are: ICE Wrap some ice in a piece of cloth and place it on the infected areas for some minutes. Repeat this process intermittently during the day. Ice facilitates blood circulation to the pimple, removal of oil and dirt, and reduction in the inflammation and swelling. The pimple gets obscure after this procedure. LEMON Swab cotton immersed in fresh lemon on the pimples before bedtime and wash with lukewarm water. Alternatively, mix one tablespoon of lemon with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and the pasty mixture is put on the pimples before going to bed and wash with lukewarm water in the morning. NOTE: Fresh lemon should be used and not bottled lemon and those who have sensitive skin should not use this. TOOTHPASTE Apply white toothpaste and not gel toothpaste to the affected areas before bedtime or apply for half an hour during the day. The pimples should be minute by morning. HONEY Dip a cotton swab into honey and rub it on the pimples, wash after half an hour with slightly warm water. One could also mix honey with cinnamon powder to form a pasty mixture that is used on the pimples and washed with cold water in the morning. STEAM Expose your face to the steam oozing from hot water in a large container and cover your head with a towel. Place it for some minutes and remove. Rinse your face with lukewarm water, dry and add oil. Steam triggers the opening and aeration of the pore and removal of dirt and oil from the pore. GARLIC Slice a fresh garlic clove into two pieces Rub the pieces on the pimples and leave for five minutes before washing with warm water. Repeat this process several times in the day. CUCUMBER Cut one or two fresh cucumber into pieces and immerse in water for about an hour. Decant and retrieve the water drink it or use the water to wash your face. Alternatively, you can make a face mask by grinding one cucumber apply the mask on your face allow it to dry for 15 minutes. Wash your skin with warm water. This aids to clean the dirt and bacteria from the pore. TOMATO Slice a tomato bulb and rub it on the infected areas and leave for about an hour and wash. It is an effective way of treating pimples. MUSTARD Add about 1/8 of a teaspoon of mustard powder to 1 teaspoon unfiltered honey and mix well. Use it on the pimples and wash off after 15minutes. EGG Wipe the messy inner egg shell with your finger to pick some egg white ( after you have poured out the egg when cooking) and apply that on the affected areas. You can leave it for as long as you like. You can bolster the treatment by applying lemon first, letting it dry before covering with the egg white. NUTMEG AND MILK Grind nutmeg and add little raw milk to it. Apply the mixture to the pimples and leave for about one or two hours then wash off. BAKING SODA Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with some water or lemon juice. Wash your skin, leaving it slightly damp. Apply the mixture on affected areas allow to dry and leave for few minutes. NOTE: Don’t leave baking soda on your skin for too long than few minutes cause it brings about dryness Wash your face with warm water and apply a moisturizer. Repeat this process twice daily for quick result. PAPAYA Crush raw papaya into pieces to extract its juice and apply on the pimples. PEPPERMINT Crush some peppermint leaves to extract its juice. Apply the juice on the pimples and leave for 10 minutes Wash with cold water when the estimated time lapses. Alternatively, take one or two drops of peppermint oil on the pimples rub it,leave for some minutes and rinse with water. TURMERIC Crush neam leaves and turmeric and add water to the mixture. Apply the product to the pimples and leave for half an hour. It removes pimples and left over scars. Turmeric could also be mixed with lemon juice or yogurt. Apply the mixture to the pimples and leave for 15minutes then wash with water. Note: If after using one or all of these procedures and the pimples still persist you should go and see a medical doctor for further treatment.
