BBC news has reported that a Tunisian court has sentenced a British DJ to a year in jail after he played a dance remix of the Muslim call to prayer. London-born Dax J, was charged with public indecency and offending public morality - but had already fled the country before the court case. He had also issued an apology. The night club was shut down after footage of the weekend's event was shared on social media and sparked outrage. A court spokesperson told AFP news agency that the court dismissed charges against the nightclub owner and an event organiser, but the prosecution has appealed saying the two should have checked what the DJ would be playing. The event was part of Orbit Festival in Nabeul in the country's north-east. The footage showed clubbers dancing to music played by two European DJs. The music included a dance version of the call to prayer, the religious act that Muslims perform five times a day. "We will not allow attacks against religious feelings and the sacred," the governor of Nabeul, Mnaouar Ouertani, said when the club was shut down. Earlier in the week, the organisers of the Orbit Festival apologised in a post on the event's Facebook page, but said that they did not accept responsibility for the playing of any offensive music. The DJ "did not realise it might offend an audience from a Muslim country like ours," they said in the post (in French). Dax J has offered his "sincere apologies to anyone who may have been offended by music that I played at Orbit Festival in Tunisia on Friday". "It was never my intention to upset or cause offence to anybody," he said. Dax J has performed at festivals and nightclubs around the world including techno festival Awakenings in Holland and the UK's Glastonbury. He runs a studio in Berlin, where he also works as a sound and mastering engineer, according to his management company. The third time was indeed the charm for a Canadian couple who won C$8.2m (£4.9m, $6.1m) in the lottery. Barbara and Douglas Fink had won the lottery twice before, once in 1989 and once in 2010. But February's Western Canada Lottery jackpot was by far the largest, according to a press release from the provincial lottery. The couple from Edmonton, Alberta say they will use the money to provide for their children. "Family comes first," Mrs. Fink told the provincial lottery organisers. "We want to make sure that our daughters and our grandkids are looked after." They'll spend some of their winnings on themselves. Mr Fink says they plan to travel and start house hunting. "Barbara wants a new house, so she'll get one," he told the lotto corporation. Mr Fink had previously shared a C$128,000 prize with four of his friends in 1989. In 2010, the couple won a C$100,000 prize. This time, they were just one of two ticket-holders to guess all six numbers correctly. Mrs Fink says she was the one who discovered they were winners, while her husband was out of town for work. She tried calling him, but at first he didn't pick up. "He didn't answer, so I waited five minutes and tried again," she remembered. "That time, he picked up. I said, 'I did it again!'" THE Samsung Galaxy S8 will be released later this month but there's an issue with this flagship smartphone that could be hugely irritating. Samsung unveiled its latest and greatest smartphone at major Unpacked events in London and New York last week. With an Infinity display that stretches across the entire front of the phone the new Galaxy S8 is, without doubt, the best looking device the world has ever seen. There's also a powerful new processor tucked inside which is reportedly faster than Apple's iPhone 7 Plus and new cameras should provide a hugely improved photographic experience. The S8 also features wireless charging and, like all of Samsung's flagships, it is water resistant The Galaxy S8 and larger S8+ are both available to pre-order now but before fans get too excited there could be a problem with using this flagship smartphone. Fingerprint scanners aren't anything new but, due to the Galaxy S8 featuring a home button embedded under the display, this important security feature had to moved from the front to the rear of the case. Again, this isn't something we've not seen before as many Android phones have a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The problem for Samsung is its placement right next to the camera lens - most phones have it situated underneath the camera. It's thought the Korean tech giant had initially wanted to use a new technology to keep the scanner on the front of the device but had to change their plans after mixed results. A recent report from the Korean Herald stated that "Samsung poured resources into Synaptics’ fledgling technology last year but the results were frustrating. "With the production imminent, the company had to decide to relocate the fingerprint scanning home button to the back of the device at the last minute." And it seems this decision is already causing some problems for the Galaxy S8. With the scanner so close to the camera there could be a tendency to get mucky fingerprints all over the lens. This problem could become even worse for users when Samsung Pay is released in more countries as, like Apple Pay, the system only works via fingerprint recognition. Samsung appears to be aware of the issues this may cause and is alerting users to make sure they keep the camera clean. As users set up the fingerprint authentication, a note will pop up in the camera app explaining that “A clean lens makes for better shots. Clean your camera lens to keep taking better pictures.” One thing that might rescue the S8 from receiving endless complaints about the rear scanner is its new iris recognition. Samsung introduced this technology on its doomed Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, although its results were mixed. Express.co.uk tested the iris scanner on a number of occasions and found it struggled when wearing glasses and when being used in low light. Samsung now say they've improved the iris technology and introduced facial recognition on the Galaxy S8 so users can select a secure biometric authentication method that works best for them This should mean that the device is able to recognise its owner even in challenging conditions. We will be bringing you a full review soon and will be putting this new security feature through its paces in the coming weeks. Samsung might not be the only tech firm moving its fingerptint scanner. It appears Apple could be forced to make the same compromise with its next iPhone. A sketchy new rumour from second-hand sources within Foxconn suggests Apple is looking to relocate the Touch ID fingerprint scanner to the rear of the device. Apple first introduced its fingerprint scanner with the iPhone 5S, with the Touch ID sensor integrated intro the Home Button at the bottom of the display. With the Apple iPhone 8 set to dramatically reduce the size of the bezels around all four edges of the display, this will no longer be possible. There have long been murmurs of Apple embedding the fingerprint sensor beneath the display glass – something this latest rumour disputes. Edward Joseph Snowden is an American computer professional, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee, and former contractor for the United States government who copied and leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013 without authorization. His disclosures revealed numerous global surveillance programs, many run by the NSA and the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance with the cooperation of telecommunication companies and European governments. Snowden has said that in the 2008 presidential election, he voted for a third-party candidate. He has stated that he had been planning to comment on NSA surveillance programs at the time, but he decided to wait because he "believed in Obama's promises." He was later disappointed with President Barack Obama, saying that his policies were a continuation of those espoused by George W. Bush. Blowing the Whistle During his years of IT work, Snowden had noticed the far reach of the NSA's everyday surveillance. While working for Booz Allen, Snowden began copying top-secret NSA documents, building a dossier on practices that he found invasive and disturbing. The documents contained vast information on the NSA's domestic surveillance practices. After he had compiled a large store of documents, Snowden told his NSA supervisor that he needed a leave of absence for medical reasons, stating he had been diagnosed with epilepsy. On May 20, 2013, Snowden took a flight to Hong Kong, China, where he remained as he orchestrated a clandestine meeting with journalists from the U.K. publication The Guardian as well as filmmaker Laura Poitras. On June 5, The Guardian released secret documents obtained from Snowden. In these documents, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court implemented an order that required Verizon to release information to the NSA on an "ongoing, daily basis" culled from its American customers' phone activities. Snowden approached Greenwald after the Post declined to guarantee publication within 72 hours of all 41 PowerPoint slides that Snowden had leaked exposing the PRISM electronic data mining program, and to publish online an encrypted code allowing Snowden to later prove that he was the source. Snowden communicated using encrypted email, and going by the codename "Verax". He asked not to be quoted at length for fear of identification by stylometry. According to Gellman, prior to their first meeting in person, Snowden wrote, "I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions, and that the return of this information to the public marks my end." Snowden also told Gellman that until the articles were published, the journalists working with him would also be at mortal risk from the United States Intelligence Community "if they think you are the single point of failure that could stop this disclosure and make them the sole owner of this information." In May 2013, Snowden was permitted temporary leave from his position at the NSA in Hawaii, on the pretext of receiving treatment for his epilepsy. In mid-May, Snowden gave an electronic interview to Poitras and Jacob Appelbaum which was published weeks later by Der Spiegel. After disclosing the copied documents, Snowden promised that nothing would stop subsequent disclosures. In June 2013, he said, "All I can say right now is the US government is not going to be able to cover this up by jailing or murdering me. Truth is coming, and it cannot be stopped." Motivations Snowden's identity was made public by The Guardian at his request on June 9, 2013. He explained: "I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong." He added that by revealing his identity he hoped to protect his colleagues from being subjected to a hunt to determine who had been responsible for the leaks. According to Poitras, who filmed the interview with Snowden in Hong Kong, he had initially not wanted to be seen on camera, because "he didn't want the story to be about him." Poitras says she convinced him it was necessary to have him give an account of the leaked documents' significance on film: "Not just because I knew that the mainstream media interpretation would be predictable and narrow, but because to have somebody who understands how this technology works, who is willing to risk their life to expose it to the public, and that we could hear that articulated, would reach people in ways that the documents themselves wouldn't." Snowden explained his actions saying: "I don't want to live in a society that does these sort of things [surveillance on its citizens] ... I do not want to live in a world where everything I do and say is recorded ... My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them." A 94-year-old American is celebrating more than four decades of working at McDonald's restaurants. Loraine Maurer of Evansville, Indiana, works two shifts per week, 44 years after joining the hamburger chain. The nonagenarian great-grandmother first joined in 1973 after her husband retired due to disability. "I told him we were too young to stay at home and so I went for a job," she recalled after enjoying a cake at a special party colleagues threw for her. She never meant to stay as long as she did, Mrs Maurer told ABC News, adding that she never thought of becoming a manager because she prefers to interact with her customers. "She is the only one here that knows how to make oats right," said one loyal customer who attended her party. After her husband died in 1980, she began to travel more often with a friend, often visiting McDonald's wherever she went. "I've been to Australia, Russia, Greece, Rome, and I'd always look when I could fly over the cities. I'd look for the arch." One location even offered to serve her beer. "That surprised me!" she said with a chuckle. Even though she contemplates retirement every winter, she says she never plans to leave. "I would miss it too much", says Mrs Maurer, who has four children, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. "I really and truly enjoy it," Mrs Maurer adds. "Life is what you make it. And so I'm trying." For more pix visit source: http://leumasgist..com.ng/2017/03/loraine-maurer-94-year-old-not-thinking.html

In the photos, Uber’s gray self-driving Volvo SUV is on its side, headlights still blasting. The car behind it is badly dented. The pictures depict the aftermath of a three-vehicle collision that occurred Friday night (March 24) in Tempe, Arizona. Local police say there were no injuries and Uber’s vehicle was not responsible for the incident. Another car failed to yield to Uber’s vehicle, police told Bloomberg, causing the Volvo to flip on its side. Uber’s car was in autonomous mode with two designated “safety” drivers up front at the time of the crash, the company told Reuters. The back seat was empty. Uber said yesterday that it was suspending tests of autonomous vehicles in Arizona and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, while it investigates what happened. Uber began picking up passengers in its self-driving cars in Tempe in late February. Arizona governor Doug Ducey was the inaugural rider. Uber moved its driverless tests to Arizona at the end of December after a brief and disastrous pilot in San Francisco. The company defied regulators in California by refusing to get a testing permit for its autonomous vehicles, saying the rules didn’t really apply. Within hours of being put into service for real passengers, one of Uber’s cars was caught running a red light. Uber blamed the mishap on human error, but the New York Times later reported that internal company documents said their cars had failed to recognize that red light as well as five others. Uber might have been blameless in the latest self-driving accident, but it couldn’t come at a worse time. The company is mired in scandal, with allegations of sexual harassment, an exodus of senior-level talent, and the conduct and leadership abilities of CEO Travis Kalanick in serious question. Its autonomous vehicle program could be halted indefinitely by a lawsuit brought in February by Waymo, the self-driving car project spun off by Google parent Alphabet. The suit alleges that Uber and Otto, a startup Uber acquired last summer, conspired to steal trade secrets from Waymo. Uber called it “baseless.” Uber has made self-driving technology the linchpin of its plan for long-term success. In theory, robot cars will be cheaper to operate and maintain than Uber’s current human workforce. They should also be less combative. But the health of Uber’s autonomous vehicle program is unclear. At least 20 engineers have quit since November, Recode reported earlier this week, including Pittsburgh program director Raffi Krikorian and famed Jeep hacker Charlie Miller. Recode also obtained documents showing that Uber’s self-driving cars currently need to be handled by their human safety drivers roughly once every 0.8 miles. The accident in Tempe is another black mark on that program, as evidenced by Uber’s decision to halt tests in Arizona and Pittsburgh. While Uber has said safety is a priority in its driverless testing, that’s been tough to square with the company’s hasty debuts and tendency to equivocate when questioned, as it did after the red-light incident in San Francisco. Anthony Levandowski, the Otto founder who became head of Uber’s self-driving efforts last summer, also shares Kalanick’s brash disregard for regulatory authority. Bloomberg reported earlier this month that a running joke at Otto was “safety third.” cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd4

Taronga Western Plains staff in Dubbo are in mourning following the death of the zoo’s longest resident. Cuddles the elephant was Australia’s last surviving African elephant. Thought to be about 46 years old, she was euthanised today following an age-related illness. “Cuddles was a well known resident of the zoo and much loved by staff, volunteers and visitors alike,” the zoo said in a statement. “We are all mourning the loss of this beautiful animal.” Dubbo zoo vets had developed a special aged care plan for Cuddles and two other Asian elephants advanced in age - Burma and Gigi. Over the past week however, her health began to fail following digestive complications. “Despite every effort, Cuddles’ condition continued to gradually deteriorate and the heartbreaking decision was made to put her to sleep to prevent any further suffering,” a zoo spokeswoman said. Cuddles arrived at the Dubbo zoo the same year it opened, in 1977. She was shipped from Britain with two other female African elephants, Yum Yum and Cheri. Zoo staff described her as a gentle natured animal that loved being the centre of attention and interacting with zoo keepers, and had even perfected the art of getting extra treats like banana and lucerne. She was the enclosure’s noisiest elephant, fond of trumpeting loudly when keepers were within view. Cuddles will be buried in the zoo’s grounds. Staff have requested that in lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Cuddles be considered for the zoo’s conservation partner, the Northern Rangelands Trust in Kenya. cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd4

The U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson has commended Nigeria for the effective strategies adopted to combat the destructive activities of the Boko Haram terrorists, urging other countries of the world to learn the strategy deployed by Nigeria if the global terrorist group, ISIS must be defeated. Tillerson gave the commendation at the meeting of the ‘Global Coalition Working to Defeat ISIS’. The meeting was attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs and senior leaders of the 68 countries of the global coalition working to defeat ISIS, in Washington, D.C. Tillerson described the coalition of the Multi-National Joint Task Force against Boko Haram as a success story that the Global Coalition Working to Defeat ISIS must build on. “Our information sharing as a coalition has prevented a number of attacks, and this must expand and accelerate regardless of departmental or international rivalries. “One example of this is West African nations who have put aside national differences to combat Boko Haram. “Let us build on this good example,” the secretary of state said. Tillerson commended Nigeria and the other neighbouring countries for putting aside their differences and uniting against Boko Haram. “We need greater intelligence and information sharing within our own domestic intelligence agencies and among our nations. “We know military strength will stop ISIS on a battlefield, but it is the combined strength of our coalition that will be the final blow to ISIS,” he said. He said ISIS was connected across every continent, adding we must work to break every link in its chain. “Our information sharing as a coalition has prevented a number of attacks, and this must expand and accelerate regardless of departmental or international rivalries. “We also must look this enemy’s ideology in the eyes for what it is: a warped interpretation of Islam that threatens all of our people. According to him, “many come from middle class or even upper class backgrounds, drawn to a radical and false utopian vision that purports to be based upon the Quran”. “Muslim partners and leaders of their faith must combat this perverse ideological message. And we are grateful that so many have and are ready to take up this responsibility. “But let me be clear: we must fight ISIS online as aggressively as we would on the ground. “ISIS presents an ongoing challenge to our collective security, but as we have seen, it is not more powerful than we are when we stand together,” he said. Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, emphasised the role of the coalition to defeat terrorists, drawing from the Boko Haram experience. “The multinational joint task force is a good example of how a coalition can help tackle terrorism and extremism – in our case, the terrorist group Boko Haram,” Olonisakin said. Nigeria’s defence chief said ISIS, just like Boko Haram, is a threat to collective global security and challenged the international community to act decisively to defeat the terrorist organizations. “In the words of Secretary of State Tillerson, ISIS presents a great threat to our collective security. So we must act now. “We must act collectively. We must act decisively to destroy ISIS and other terrorist organizations,” he said. Among those who attended the meeting were the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, Amb. Hakeem Balogun and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd4 |
