Awka South Local Government Chairman, Prince Chinedu Okafor, confirmed that the missing pupil’s body had been recovered. He also said the rescued children were stable and receiving medical attention at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.

According to a family member, Success was remembered as a brave boy who reportedly broke one of the vehicle's windows, creating an escape route that helped other occupants get out. Tragically, he could not make it to safety himself.

The circumstances surrounding his final moments have added another layer of heartbreak. His father reportedly recalled that Success kissed him on both cheeks before leaving home that morning to board the school shuttle — a journey from which he would never return.

Two other children from the same family were among those rescued.

2027: Obi, Kwankwaso Get Free Hand To Pick NDC Campaign Chiefs

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has disclosed that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have been given the authority to nominate key officials of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a new statement, the NDC said Obi and Kwankwaso will nominate the Director-General of the campaign, Deputy Director-General for the North, campaign spokesman, deputy spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director and other key officials.

The party said the decision is part of efforts to build an inclusive and coordinated campaign structure as the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket prepares for the 2027 presidential contest.

According to the NDC, a complete organogram of the proposed campaign structure was prepared in August and made available to Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso for their input. The party said it has also developed a campaign timetable and is waiting for arrangements on campaign funding and fundraising to be concluded.

The NDC further stated that campaign funds will be paid into the presidential campaign account and managed by officials nominated by the presidential candidate and his running mate, alongside the party’s National Treasurer. The party said this arrangement is intended to promote transparency and accountability and ensure compliance with its reporting obligations under Nigeria’s electoral laws.

The announcement comes amid recent controversy surrounding a separate 59-member campaign council announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement. The NDC had distanced itself from that structure, while the movement maintained that it is an independent organisation.

The latest statement from the NDC therefore provides further clarification on how the party intends to constitute its official presidential campaign machinery.

The party has also appealed to its candidates and supporters at all levels to avoid internal disagreements and concentrate on the 2027 elections. The NDC said there are no battles to fight within the party and identified the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as its common political opponent.

China has warned the United States against weaponising outer space and turning it into a “battlefield”, after Washington publicly confirmed for the first time that it has deployed weapons in Earth orbit.

US confirmation of on-orbit weapons
On 14 September 2026, US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink told the Air, Space, and Cyber Conference that the United States now possesses “on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action”. A US Space Force spokesperson later reiterated that America has “on-orbit space control weapons” but did not specify their type or location.

Experts cited in international reports say the systems are likely non-kinetic—such as electronic warfare tools, jammers or directed-energy capabilities—rather than explosive weapons, in line with US policy to avoid creating orbital debris. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty, to which the US, China and Russia are parties, bans nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in orbit but does not prohibit conventional or non-kinetic space weapons.

China’s response: “Stop preparing for war in outer space”
At a regular briefing on 15 September, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Beijing “firmly opposes the weaponisation of outer space” and warned that the US move risks triggering a global arms race.

“China stands for peaceful use of outer space and keeping it safe, and opposes any arms race in outer space or any attempt to weaponise it and turn it into a warzone,” Guo said.

“We urge the US to stop expanding its military build-up in outer space and uphold global strategic stability with concrete actions,” he added.

Chinese state media, including the Global Times, described the disclosure as evidence of Washington’s pursuit of “space hegemony” and cautioned that other countries may feel compelled to respond in kind.

Russia joins the warning
Russia echoed China’s concerns, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying “outer space must remain free of any weapons” and calling for broad international consensus on demilitarisation. Security forces launch rescue mission after six clerics abducted in Zamfara

Security operatives in Zamfara State have launched an extensive search-and-rescue operation following the abduction of six Islamic clerics along the Dakko–Damri feeder road in Bakura Local Government Area.

According to the Zamfara State Police Command, the Imams were ambushed on Saturday, 12 September 2026, at about 11:30 a.m. by heavily armed bandits as they travelled to Talata Mafara. Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar said the attackers intercepted the vehicle conveying the clerics, who were all identified as Imams, and drove them into the bush. He added that security teams were combing the surrounding forests in coordination with other agencies to secure their release.

DDM learnt that some early reports linked the incident to a prayer gathering at the Talata Mafara residence of former governor and Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, with initial accounts suggesting five or six clerics were taken from the venue. However, the Nigerian Army has refuted claims that the abduction occurred at Yari’s residence, describing such reports as misleading. In a statement, the Army said intelligence indicated the victims were abducted while travelling from the Sububu forest axis within Bakura LGA en route to Talata Mafara, and that “no cleric was abducted at Senator Yari’s residence.”

There are also conflicting local accounts over the identities of the victims. While police maintain that all six were Imams, the Talata Mafara LGA chairman and some relatives have insisted that only one deputy Imam was among the abducted, with the others being petrol marketers.
In a related development, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, met with political stakeholders in Kaduna, calling for unified support behind President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the ongoing campaign against banditry across the North-West.
