A former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Saturday received a stream of political leaders, associates, and well-wishers at his Abuja residence following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who died on Friday in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness.

The condolence visits came amid public attention surrounding El-Rufai’s temporary release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, where he had been held since February 18 over allegations of financial misconduct.

He was granted release on compassionate grounds to enable him to attend his mother’s burial.

Among those who visited El-Rufai was a former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who commented in a video shared by the African Democratic Congress on the circumstances surrounding the release.

“To show you that the government knows what they’re doing, they just released him without a court order. El-Rufai’s charges are politically motivated,” Amaechi said.

The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on Tuesday adjourned the bail application of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to March 31, 2026, after hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution.

El-Rufai was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegations of conversion of public property and money laundering linked to his time in office.

The former governor arrived at the court under heavy security at about 9:00 a.m., accompanied by security operatives.

During the proceedings, his counsel, Ukpon Akpan, requested bail to allow El-Rufai prepare his defence, but the prosecution objected, arguing that granting bail could interfere with ongoing investigations.

El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, after earlier being released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
