According to reports, Justice Obiora Egwatu held that Adeyemi, who is facing an eight-count charge of forgery, fraud, impersonation and related offences, failed to show “exceptional circumstances” to justify bail, describing the allegations as serious and the evidence against him as strong. The court also turned down his request to be moved to a hospital for medical reasons, ordering instead that he be treated by the Nigerian Correctional Service medical team while in custody.
DDM learnt that the House committee, led by Chairman Yusuf Gagdi, said its investigation confirmed that PFIPC was never established by any Act of Parliament or Executive Order, and that Adeyemi operated the outfit without legal backing. Investigators further alleged that the syndicate operated illegally from offices within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, forged Presidential correspondence, created fake cadre posts, and used the purported agency to solicit funds and award contracts.
The panel also heard that a businessman, Gbenga Collins, paid N400 million to Adeyemi for a supposed PFIPC contract to renovate and furnish an official residence, a transaction the committee described as suspicious and under further scrutiny. The ICPC, in its interim report, recommended Adeyemi’s prosecution and disciplinary action against several senior officials who allegedly aided the scheme, while clearing Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila of direct involvement.
Adeyemi, who was arrested in Osun State in July 2026 after a bench warrant was issued for his failure to appear in court, has denied the allegations and maintained that PFIPC is a legitimate agency. He remains in custody pending trial.

EFCC Secures 10,872 Convictions, Recovers ₦1.23 Trillion in 34 Months

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says it secured a total of 10,872 convictions and recovered more than ₦1.233 trillion between October 2023 and July 2026, representing 34 months under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

The anti-graft agency disclosed the figures while highlighting what it described as significant progress in its fight against economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.

According to the EFCC, it received 49,673 petitions during the period and investigated 39,615 cases, while 14,476 cases were filed before the courts. The agency said the number of convictions recorded represents a conviction-to-filing ratio of about 75 per cent.

Beyond the naira recovery, the commission said it also recovered approximately 684.48 million US dollars, £373,906 British pounds and €9.34 million euros, alongside other foreign currencies.

The EFCC further disclosed that courts issued 10,053 forfeiture orders during the period. It said assets and funds worth about ₦661.32 billion and 492.37 million dollars were released to beneficiaries, including individuals and government agencies.

The commission also highlighted a number of high-profile convictions recorded during the period. Among those mentioned were Saleh Mamman, a former Minister of Power, and Robert Orya, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank, NEXIM Bank. The agency also cited the conviction of Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, who was linked to advance-fee fraud.

Despite the number of convictions recorded, the EFCC said its legal battle against corruption and financial crimes remains ongoing, with 36 high-profile cases involving former governors, ministers, senior government officials, banking executives and corporate figures still pending before the courts.

The figures come amid growing concerns over financial crimes in Nigeria, including the increasing use of digital platforms and cryptocurrencies to perpetrate fraud.

The EFCC has consequently continued to warn Nigerians about cryptocurrency-related crimes, urging members of the public to be cautious of fraudulent digital investment schemes, online scams and other forms of financial crime facilitated through emerging technologies.

The commission says its approach is not limited to securing convictions, but also involves tracing, recovering and returning proceeds of crime to their rightful beneficiaries.

The state’s story is one of division, military rule, short-lived civilian government, and a long stretch of democratic governance with its own share of political drama.
How Anambra State was created
Anambra State, as it exists today, was created on August 27, 1991, by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida. Before that, there was an “Old Anambra State” formed in 1976 from the old East Central State, with Enugu as its capital. In 1991, that old state was split into two: Enugu State and the present Anambra State, with Awka made the new capital. This 1991 creation is the one being celebrated as the state’s 35th anniversary in 2026.
From military administrators to elected governors
From the day it was created, Anambra was first run by military officers appointed by the federal government. Captain Joseph Abulu, a Navy officer, was the first administrator of the new Anambra State from August 27, 1991, and stayed in office until early 1992.
When Nigeria briefly returned to civilian rule in the early 1990s, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife became the first elected civilian governor of the present Anambra State, serving from January 2, 1992, until November 1993, when the military took over again.

Residents of Nnobi in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday took to the streets to protest the planned demolition of more than 1,000 houses allegedly marked by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to make way for a high-tension power line.

The protesters, drawn mainly from the seven villages in the Ebenesi quarter, said affected residents were given only about 14 days to vacate their homes.

They appealed to President Bola Tinubu, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Federal Government to intervene, urging authorities to either provide alternative accommodation for affected families or consider rerouting the power line underground.

Community leaders said many of the properties at risk are ancestral homes that have been in families for generations. They also disclosed that the dispute with TCN has lasted for about 14 years and is currently before the court.

The protest later turned tense after Governor Soludo's aide, Dr. Nelson Omenugha, reportedly told the demonstrators that development comes with a cost.

Pensioners Fault Successive Anambra Governments Over Unpaid 11-Month Arrears, Commend Peter Obi's Directive

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Anambra State Council, has accused successive administrations in the state of failing to pay an outstanding 11-month pension arrears allegedly owed to some retired primary school teachers, despite what the union says was a valid approval granted by former Governor Peter Obi before he left office.

The allegations were made during a press conference held in Awka on Thursday and addressed by the State Chairman of the union, Comrade Dr. Anthony C. Ugozor (JP).

The union also challenged the Anambra State Government's recent announcement that it was undertaking a phased settlement of inherited pension arrears. According to the pensioners, the government's announcement merely approved pension adjustments and did not amount to payment of the outstanding arrears.

They explained that pension adjustment should not be mistaken for pension harmonization, stressing that an approval without actual disbursement does not resolve the issue.

Providing historical context, the union said the Federal Government had consistently released funds to states to cover its share of pensions for retired primary school teachers, including beneficiaries in Anambra State.

According to the pensioners, by the time Peter Obi assumed office as governor, the unpaid federal-share pension arrears had accumulated to 16 months. They said the Obi administration accepted responsibility for the inherited liability and began clearing it in installments.

The union stated that five months of the arrears were paid before Obi completed his tenure in March 2014. It further claimed that shortly before leaving office, the former governor approved payment of the remaining 11 months.

As evidence, the union cited a letter dated March 14, 2014, with reference number **HOS/ED/RR/5/SUB.1/T.2/108**, issued by the Office of the Head of Service. According to the pensioners, the letter directed the Local Government Pensions Board in Awka to commence payment of the outstanding balance, noting that the Federal Government had already provided the necessary funds.

However, the union alleged that the directive was never implemented, insisting that the outstanding 11-month arrears have remained unpaid throughout the administrations of former Governor Willie Obiano and the incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The pensioners therefore appealed to the state government to immediately settle the outstanding entitlement, describing the delay of more than a decade as unfair to retirees who dedicated their working lives to public service.

At the same time, the union acknowledged efforts by Governor Soludo in addressing other pension-related issues. It commended his administration for paying approximately **₦22 billion** in inherited gratuity arrears and introducing a **₦10,000 monthly pension award** in October 2024 to support retirees.

Despite the commendation, the union maintained that the monthly award should not be interpreted as pension harmonization. It argued that pensions in Anambra have not been reviewed in line with constitutional provisions for over two decades, even as salaries of serving civil servants have undergone several upward reviews during the same period.

The NUP also disclosed that the issue of the outstanding 11-month arrears has been brought before the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Anambra State House of Assembly, and the Office of the Head of Service. It added that a verified payment ledger identifying the affected pensioners has already been submitted to the government.

The union further expressed concern over the exclusion of retired workers of the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) from the ₦10,000 monthly pension award. It alleged that the affected retirees are now owed 22 months of the allowance in addition to gratuities dating back to 2017.

Among its other demands, the union called for an upward review of the state's minimum pension to reflect prevailing economic realities and urged the government to address unresolved issues surrounding the contributory pension scheme.

The pensioners concluded by appealing to Governor Soludo to complete the ongoing pension reforms through full pension harmonization and settlement of all verified outstanding entitlements, saying such measures would significantly improve the welfare and dignity of retired workers across Anambra State.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a substantial, graduated salary increase ranging between 30 and 80 percent for approximately 250,000 active service personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
