Phones / Blackberry Starts Looking For Buyer Or Partner by flexpro(m): 8:14pm On Aug 12, 2013
Blackberry's board of directors has formed a committee to explore strategic alternatives for the future of the company that could include joint ventures or a sale of the company, as it struggles to turn its new BlackBerry 10 operating system into a success.

The news comes after the company announced that it had shipped 6.8 million smartphones and recorded a US$84 million loss during the three months to June 1. Only 2.7 million phones running the new OS were sold, a figure that disappointed analysts.

The soft sales led analysts to question the future of BlackBerry 10 and the company during a conference call on the results. At the time, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins offered various themes on the same reply as a defense: "BlackBerry 10 is still in the early stages on its transition. In fact, we are only five months in to what is the launch of an entirely new mobile computing platform," he said.

Webmasters / Is Google Following You? by flexpro(m): 7:17pm On Aug 11, 2013
Internet giant's latest mobile operating system tracks user's location even when Wi-Fi is switched OFF
Google's Android 4.3 operating system has a feature called 'Scanning always available'
This feature scans for networks even when Wi-Fi is turned off
Google claims this is to 'improve location accuracy and for other purposes'

Google is yet to comment on what these 'other purposes' could be.

According to Ron Amadeo from fan site Android Police, who discovered the code: 'Google wants you to leave your Wi-Fi on, or at least partially on, all the time.

'Now I know you might immediately scream 'MY BATTERY [LIFE!'] but this will probably save battery.

Google wants you to leave Wi-Fi on so that apps can get your location, but consider that the other option for location is firing up the GPS chip, which is a battery's worst enemy.'

The feature is turned off by default, according to users who have already downloaded the update.

Plus it can be enabled or disabled by going to Settings, Wi-Fi, Advanced Wi-Fi and checking, or unchecking, the 'Scanning always available' box.

Google rolled out its Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Over-The-Air (OTA) update for Google editions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 handsets earlier this week.

The update to the operating system was announced in July during the launch of Google's 2013 Nexus 7 tablet.

It was first ported to older Nexus devices including Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

Google has introduced other features to Android 4.3 to increase privacy and security.

Its added support for encrypted KeyChains that let people store private information that remains hidden even if hackers break into the phone.

It has also moved the Verify Apps feature that scans any downloaded apps automatically for malware to the Google Play Services menu and added a 'Find My Phone' feature, if the handset is lost or stolen.

Other features include customisable multi-user accounts, restricted profiles, an advanced camera app and a new keyboard.

Android 4.3 has also added support for Bluetooth smart technology, also known as Bluetooth low energy. This means apps can connect to the low-power sensors used in fitness technology for example.

@Brand New,

Allow him to move his website to another host, just hold the advance payment he has made on the project.

Before commencing on any project always put pen to paper or generate an invoice for the client with clear terms written on it in case of any dispute that may arise.

80% of Nigeria one man business do take some web developer/Designer as hungry and cheap people to mess around with.

Even FBI network is also vulnerable when it comes to security breach. You will not let your door open simply because the person selling security padlock says that he is not giving you 100% guaranteed that it will protect your valuables

Djtm: Ssl is no longer secure according to an article I read some days ago.

Webmasters / Re: Let's Discuss SSL Certificates by flexpro(m): 1:21pm On Aug 11, 2013
I totally agree with you on this, imagine deploying an e-commerce website to a client without advising him on the need of ssl security.

The early the better we start bring some of this option to the table when negotiating on web projects with clients the better for us.

*dhtml:
Well, nothing is 100% secure on internet, or so i immagine. SSL is just one out of several security options we have available. Web security is a really really big topic.

But let us limit our talk to SSL, and how we can get the Nigerian people to use it more.
Webmasters / Re: Let's Discuss SSL Certificates by flexpro(m): 9:38pm On Aug 10, 2013
For those who are following the topic that need to know about ssl see below.

What is SSL?
The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) is the most widely deployed security protocol used today. It is essentially a protocol that provides a secure channel between two machines operating over the Internet or an internal network. In today’s Internet focused world, the SSL protocol is typically used when a web browser needs to securely connect to a web server over the inherently insecure Internet.

Technically, SSL is a transparent protocol which requires little interaction from the end user when establishing a secure session. In the case of a browser for instance, users are alerted to the presence of SSL when the browser displays a padlock, or, in the case of Extended Validation SSL, when the address bar displays both a padlock and a green bar. This is the key to the success of SSL – it is an incredibly simple experience for end users.

Na waoo for you, which one be first to comment? abi you wan join d group ni?
*dhtml:
First to comment. . .

@Yawatide, can you advise our fellow webmaster which website require ssl integration and the benefit of such??

I have been studying about it lately and i have discovered that almost half of Nigerian Webmasters don't advise clients on web security.

yawa-ti-de:
I have used SSL certificates from hostmonster on 2 sites so far. I don't know what to say about integration as I just paid for it (around $140 a year) and they tell you it will be active in 24 - 48 hours. Hostmonster's customer support has also been spot on for me, going back 8 years.

If the site you are working on will require an SSL, don't hesitate to insist that the client gets it.

I was actually thinking that the site should be restructure to become like a blog where latest happenings in the web industry will be posted daily, weekly or monthly including site reviews and others.

Or what do you think??

yawa-ti-de:
It has been on a hiatus due to a lack of feedback/audience. Would you like to see it back up and running again? If I get enough responses, I just might fire it back up wink

Many Web Developer/Web Designer in Nigeria don't know the business inside website development services, is not all about collecting a project worth NGN5 Million is all about how well you manage and keep the customer to wanting more from you and of cos prompt customer service is key.

cindayat05: Greenmouse please follow flexpros advice and do what is expected of a CEO, unless you have a difft motive for this post. Moreover the last time i checked, your office don't speak big of you as you come here to claim. If that ogba office is your main office i guess u don't need any advice here, cos 500k will transform that office to look more like an IT firm rather than a business centre.

@ Greenmouse,

Word of Advice, learn how to keep your privacy, i know some best Web designers/Developers that earn millions per project that don't make noise around.

Nairaland Webmaster section has really become children playing ground this days.

greenmouse:
A client is forcing me to use ASP.net for his website project.

The project is worth 7 million naira though, we have agreed already except for this new development, he is now threatening to give it out if I wont use ASP.net as against PHP which he believe is not secured.

I have already told him I specilised in PHP.

He said he doesnt believe in Open source.

Pls advice what do I do, I dont want to loose the job.

Nice Contribution/Enlightenment!

[quote author=Brains1313]@Sluvy4tune

The first two rules of the game are:

1. Never register your domain name with your hosting company.
REASON: If your site goes down and you find your host is not competent enough, you can easily. look for another host and get back quickly online.

2.Avoid Nigeria hosting companies (for now) like plague.
REASON: They are quick at collecting your money. But when there are issues, they are slow as snail. Their customer service is horrible. And their phone lines quickly go dead. Trust me, I’m talking from experience.

The best places to register your domain name are;

************************************
http://www.name.com
http://www.namesilo.com (for less than $10)
NOTE:
They both accept GTB Naira MasterCard
I have presently stick tent with Namesilo because they are cheap and have one of the best navigational systems I have seen in all my years in the business.
************************************

The two hosting Companies I recommend are;
****************************************
http://www.Mochahost.com
http://www.ucvhost.com
NOTE:
1. I have presently moved all my personal and clients projects to Mochahost and they have never failed me till date. And you can also pay with GTB Naira MasterCard.
2. UCV Host is also very reliable; the major problem is that their payment processor does not deal with Nigeria. You will have to go through Global Trend Network at Ikeja. And this will cost you a fortune. So, I advise you go with Mochahost.
