As Nigerians express concern over the scary situation in Rivers State, the Federal Government has dismissed media reports of the recent political turbulence in the state as “deliberate over- sensationalization of the situation.” Attempts by five lawmakers of the House of Assembly to remove the Speaker were resisted and the situation degenerated into free-for-all on the floor of the assembly. Five northern governors had during this week met with two former Heads of State, Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalam Abubakar, in Minna, Niger State, asking them to prevail on President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure that peace returns to the state. But addressing newsmen yesterday in Abuja, Senior Special Assistant, Public Affairs to the President, Dr Doyin Okupe claimed there was no breakdown of law and order in the state. He claimed that the crisis in the state was imaginary. His remarks: “We are compelled to react to the unfolding political drama emanating from recent activities of some governors from the northern part concerning political developments in Rivers State. These political moves, which are clearly intended to create fear, despair and sense of apprehension among the citizenry are grossly unfounded, misplaced and a deliberate over-sensationalization of the situation. “We therefore wish to state as follows: Insinuations and statements suggesting that Rivers State is on fire are grossly unfounded. So far, as it is evident to every discerning observer of political developments, the state is calm and peaceful. Residents of the state continue to go about their various businesses, religious, social and political activities under peaceful atmosphere,” he said. Meanwhile, the Force Headquaters in Abuja said in Abuja yesterday that Majority Leader of the House of Assembly, Chidi Llyod, is in its custody and helping police investigators to unravel the circumstances surrounding the crisis in the Assembly. This is coming just as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, has promised a quick, fair and unbiased investigation into the matter. Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP, Frank Mba, who made this known in a statement, said that Lloyd reported to the Force Headquarters on Monday, at about 4pm, in company of his lawyer and went straight to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID). Two days after her foster mother died in a fatal accident in Port Harcourt, the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, last night, at exactly 9.40pm, returned to the country from Geneva. She returned to the waiting arms of her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan, who was joined by former military Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Anthony Anenih, among dignitaries at their official residence in the Presidential Villa. Mrs. Jonathan’s foster mother, Mrs. Charity Iwori- Oba, fondly called Sisi Mama, was on her way to Bayelsa when the accident claiming her life occurred. The First Lady was said to be devastated when the news was broken to her on the telephone. Others who joined the President to receive his wife were his mother, Eunice; wife of Bayelsa State governor; ministers of transport, aviation, power, science and technology as well as culture and tourism. Mrs. Jonathan was immediately led into the president’s residence by her husband. The ministers and a few presidential aides were allowed to follow them in. Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, later led them in a prayer session for the repose of the deceased’s soul, while Anenih gave a brief closing remarks. As some dignitaries were finding their ways out of the president’s residence, some others, include Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State were arriving to console Mrs. Jonathan. A 50-year-old pastor of one of the pentecostal churches in Nigeria was yesterday arrested in a mobile police officer’s bedroom at Iyaba Umudim, Nnewi in Anambra State. He was allegedly trying to make love to the policeman’s wife. Unknowing to the pastor, the policeman was lying in wait for him. The suspect, a father of four from Ngwa in Abia State was said to have been making love advances to the policeman’s wife as the two families lived in the same building and the woman had always rejected. It was gathered that the woman had always told the randy pastor to let her alone each time he tried to seduce her even though the pastor was said to have promised her N50, 000 for a start if she allowed him have sex with her. Also, the woman always relayed the pastor’s advances to her husband who asked her to play along with the pastor. The pastor’s alleged sin caught up with him yesterday when he called the woman’s husband, serving with Mopol 29, Awka on phone at about 4:00pm asking him whether he would return to Nnewi after work and the policeman told him (the pastor) that he had a special assignment in Asaba, Delta State. The police officer said: “The pastor apparently happy started praying for me that God would protect me in my journey, and all that, and I said Amen, but he did not know that I was already in Nnewi when I answered his call.” The police officer said he later secretly returned to his house having arranged with his wife to catch the randy man. At the wee hours, according to him, he ‘laid ambush’ in his bedroom waiting for the pastor’s next action. “It was around 2:23am when the pastor came and we left the sitting room open. He tiptoed into the sitting room with only his trousers and singlet on him, coming bare-footed and sat down in the palour. “He called my wife who came out from the bedroom to welcome him. Minutes after, he requested that he and my wife should go into the bedroom and he was ushered in. He flashed his torchlight in the bedroom and appeared to have a premonition as my wife went back to luck the door at the sitting room. Then he had taken his position on the bed and suddenly, I came out from my hiding place in the bedroom and gripped him and a fight ensued. “He gave me several bites on my left arm and fingers. By then the fight had taken us to the sitting room where my plasma television, handset and other property were destroyed in his struggle to free himself. If not for other sympathizers who were attracted to the noise he would not have been over powered,” the policeman recounted. He said members of the vigilance group were later invited as the pastor pleaded for forgiveness attributing his action to the work of the devil and promised to pay for the damaged property and any amount of money for him to be set free and the incident concealed. He was, however, taken to Nnewi Central Police Station for further investigation. Contacted, the Anambra State police image-maker, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka said he had not been briefed on the incident.
