I'm curious cause I recently joined Nairaland and it seems to have alot more members than other forums but they also don't seem to get as much activity. Our issue is with the way our communities were held down when the U.S was on its way up in the world, ~1930-2000. Blacks were kept out of unions, 1/3rd of the men were imprisoned for an average of 10 years, the family was broken, drugs were forced on people who already weren't doing well, and now they've programmed women into gutting another 1/3rd of the men while they're still in the womb.

That's the problem. If you feel guilty, give the Nigerian immigrants a primer before they come here: "You're walking in on the easiest part, and you have no real ties to this mess, so don't talk shit."

I agree. That doesn't really answer the question though. If America has a moral obligation to pay reparations for purchasing them, does Africa have a moral obligation to pay reparations for selling them?

I don't understand how anybody could say what the Haitians did was not completely justified. They were slaves rebelling against people who regarded them as subhuman and took away all their rights and freedoms. They had weapons and advanced technology on the Haitians. Of course they had to pull every stop to get them to leave.

And also the state of Haiti today is not retribution for slaves fighting for their freedom all those years ago. I don't even understand how that makes any sense tbh. I can only see someone with a deep hatred for blacks arguing otherwise.

It was a slave rebellion. They rebelled against their slave masters and fought for their independence. And those white people were not Haitian at the time because there was no such thing as "Haiti". It was only through fighting them that they were able to gain their independence and establish Haiti, the first free black republic. How on Earth could they owe reparations for that?

If a group of people are subugating and enslaving another group of people, absolutely they have the right to fight for thheir freedom. How can you say otherwise?

Imagine the African population was not as numerous then as it is now. That would require a large scale effort of rounding up and distributing as well as determining costs and divying up the spoils. In my opinion the word "historical reparation" doesn't make sense. Black Americans deserve a good life because they are American citizens. And all citizens deserve a better life. Not because they are slaves in the past. The slavery was a horrible fact. But demanding "historic redress is ridiculous". Black haitians killed all whites for Haiti. I don't see anyone demanding historic reparations from black Haitians

But how are we the victim when we profited? These people were sold for gunpowder, iron, and even mirror. They would round up whole villages to be sold to Europeans. There is ALOT of culpability to be held by the african people in slavery.

If any reparation is to be claimed, then the west should be held for that not just the US alone … those who remained in Africa had their own share of woes from slavery and colonization.

I've been thinking about this lately and wondering. Are they owed reparations? They are currently requesting reparations from the United States government, which I support them on. They worked the land. They deserve it. But are they owed from Africans?

At first I thought yes, because they were sold and if you are going to ask from the buyer, it makes sense to also ask the seller. But then I thought the basis of them asking from the US is the idea that they built the institutions in the US that helped establish it as the country it is today. They did not build anything in Africa. So is anything really owed to them?
