The Nigerian aviation industry has experienced a significant setback due to a crippling foreign exchange crisis, leading to a drastic reduction in the number of operating aircraft. From a peak of 107 airplanes, the current fleet has dwindled to 44, with 63 commercial airplanes either grounded within the country or undergoing maintenance checks abroad. This 58 percent drop reflects a grim reality, even with an increase in the number of scheduled airline operators. Notable carriers include Max Air, Overland Airways, United Nigeria, Air Peace, Aero Contractors, Arik Air, Dana Air, Azman Air, Green Africa, Ibom Air, Value Jet, and NG Eagle. Industry stakeholders are calling for the Federal Government to address the foreign exchange scarcity, as the industry is witnessing the collapse of businesses and impacted airlines' ability to conduct necessary maintenance checks. Aero Contractors CEO, Capt. Ado Sanusi, emphasizes the economic challenges, citing a 30% increase in the exchange rate and a 20% rise in spare parts costs. Aviation analyst Simon Tumba attributes the industry's woes to forex crisis and rising importation levies by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Fleet retention becomes difficult, affecting airlines' capacity to maintain and expand their fleets. Stakeholders, including airline operators, aviation analysts, and industry experts, are calling for urgent government intervention to revive the sector. The current economic environment, marked by inflation and a depreciating naira, has left businesses, including airlines, in dire straits.

Flight levels are standardized pressure altitudes used by aircraft to maintain safe separation of air traffic at various altitudes. They are expressed in hundreds and are based on the International Standard Atmosphere pressure setting of 1013.2 Hpa (or 29.92 InHg). This standardization simplifies communication and enhances situational awareness, enabling effective air traffic management. Flight levels are essential for maintaining Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM), a fundamental aspect of air traffic management. Pilots switch to flight levels during ascent and revert to local atmospheric pressure settings during descent, determined by aviation authorities. During ascent, aircraft reach the transition altitude, which varies across regions. During descent, they reach the transition level, which is specified on standard arrival charts or instrument approach charts used for landings. Understanding flight levels and how aircraft measure altitude is crucial for maintaining safe and efficient air travel, ensuring consistency and uniformity in altitude reporting. The concept of flight levels is a testament to the collaborative efforts of pilots, air traffic controllers, and aviation authorities in creating a framework that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all passengers.

The aviation sector in Nigeria is facing a crisis due to massive foreign withdrawals, unpaid debts, and inadequate government repayments. Foreign airlines have repatriated $1.76 billion in the first and second quarters of 2023, with the Balance of Payment account receiving a total credit of $19.39 million from airline travel. However, passengers spent ₦779.61 billion on tickets, while cargo and other expenses amounted to $10.22 billion and ₦5.65 billion, respectively. The crisis persists, with foreign airlines expressing dissatisfaction over the government's failure to settle outstanding debts. Nigeria leads the chart in terms of airlines' blocked funds, with $792 million. In an attempt to address the issue, the Federal Government recently released $61 million to foreign airlines, which was criticized by the airlines as grossly inadequate. As of July 2022, foreign airlines had approximately $464 million trapped in Nigeria. By November 2023, around 90% of the $783 million owed remained unpaid, and this figure has surged to nearly $800 million as of January 2024. This failure to settle debts resulted in the suspension of operations by two major airlines, Emirates and Etihad, leading to a significant 20% decline in international passenger traffic for the country. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has implemented a 'no pay, no service' sanction on defaulting airlines, focusing on strict measures against debtors and adhering to regulatory frameworks. The aviation industry faces challenges not only from outstanding debts but also from illicit activities, with the NCAA aiming to enforce consumer protection regulations and ensure timely care for passengers.
