* He was a Convert to Catholicism

Mike Hopkins was raised in a Protestant family, but married a Catholic woman. Though they were raising their two daughters as Catholics, he wasn’t sure it was for him right away, until he said he “felt that something was missing in my life.”

After a period of discernment, he eventually joined RCIA and was received into full communion in the Catholic Church. But that raised a question for him when he was sent to the International Space Station as an astronaut in 2013 for 24 weeks: how would he receive the Sacraments?
He couldn’t celebrate Mass or do Reconciliation without a priest. But he would be able to receive the Eucharist if he took consecrated host with him to space.

With the help of his pastor, Fr. James H. Kaczynski of the St. Mary Church in Texas, he got special permission from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to carry 6 consecrated hosts (which can be split into 4 pieces each) in a pyx into space to consume once a week while on the International Space Station.

This was great comfort to Hopkins. “Those events can be stressful,” Hopkins told Catholic News Service about his work in space. “Knowing Jesus was with me when I stepped out the door into the vacuum of space was important to me.”

The view of the Earth that he got from space also had a deep impact on his faith: “When you see the Earth from that vantage point and see all the natural beauty that exists, it’s hard not to sit there and realize there has to be a higher power that has made this.”

Christianity EtcFacts Every Catholic Should Know About The Holy Mass & Eucharist by FMary(op): 4:52pm On Jun 18, 2017
Every Catholic Should Know these facts about the Holy Mass and the Holy Eucharist.

1. When the Eucharistic is being celebrated, the Sanctuary is filled with countless angels who adore the divine victim immolated on the altar. ~St. John Chrysostom

2. The angels surround and help the priest when he is celebrating Mass. ~St. Augustine

3. If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy. ~St. Jean Vianney

4. The celebration of Holy Mass is as valuable as the death of Jesus on the cross. ~St. Thomas Aquinas

5. Once, St. Teresa was overwhelmed with God’s Goodness and asked Our Lord,”How can I thank you?” Our Lord replied,” ATTEND ONE MASS.”

6. “My Son so loves those who assist at the Holy sacrifice of the Mass that, if it were necessary he would die for them as many times as they’ve heard Massses.” Our lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche

7. When we receive Holy Communion, we experience something extra ordinary- a joy, a fragrance, a well-being that thrills the whole body and causes it to exalt. ~St. Jean Vianney

8. There is nothing so great as the Eucharist. If God had something more previous, He would have given it to us. ~St. Jean Vianney

9. When we have been to Holy Communion, the balm of love envelops the soul as the flower envelops the bee. ~St. Jean Vianney

10. It would be easier for the world to exist without the sun than to exist without the Holy Mass. ~St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

The Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed mosque in Al Mushrif, a district in Abu Dhabi, UAE, was on Wednesday renamed ‘Mariam, Umm Eisa’.

Mariam Umm Eisa is an Arabic name for Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

The renaming of the mosque was ordered by Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, “to consolidate bonds of humanity between followers of different religions”, Gulf News reports.

Reacting to the development, Andrew Thompson, a senior chaplain at St Andrew’s Church, was quoted as saying: “We are delighted that we are celebrating something that we have in common between both our faiths.

“Mary, as the mother of Jesus, is of course a holy, special figure in our communities. She is a woman who symbolises obedience to God.

“We look forward to growing in deeper understanding with our neighbours, and we celebrate with them the new name of the mosque,” Thompson said.

Jeramie Rinne, senior pastor of the Evangelical Community Church in Abu Dhabi, also hailed the news.

“Mohammad has made another generous gesture of religious tolerance in renaming the mosque. The UAE continues to set the pace in this region for peaceful coexistence and cooperation. We are very encouraged and feel blessed to be a part of this nation,” he said.

A church in Al Ain was said to have recently opened its doors for Maghrib prayers.

Church workers reportedly laid down carpets on the wooden floor for over 200 Asian Muslim workers to say their prayers.

ProfEinstein:
can you please throw more light on the canonical implications of "suspension a divinis"?
I got this online, I am trying to get a better definition

According to canon 1333 §1, "Suspension, which can affect only clerics, prohibits: 1° all or some of the acts of the power of order; 2° all or some of the acts of the power of governance; [and] 3° the exercise of all or some of the rights or functions attaching to an office.
Christianity EtcVATICAN - The Pope Deeply Saddened By The Events Of The Diocese Of Ahiara by FMary(op): 6:27pm On Jun 09, 2017
VATICAN - The Pope deeply saddened by the events of the diocese of Ahiara Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Yesterday the Holy Father received a Delegation of the Diocese of Ahiara, Nigeria, in a private Audience, which has been living a painful situation for years (see Fides, 8/6/2017).

The members of the Delegation were accompanied by His Eminence Cardinal J. O. Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja and Apostolic Administrator of Ahiara, His Excellency A. J. Obinna, Metropolitan Archbishop of Owerri, I. A. Kaigama, Archbishop of Jos and President of the Episcopal Conference of Nigeria, His Excellency P. E. Okpaleke, Bishop of Ahiara.

Also Cardinal Secretary of State, the Prefect and Superiors of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples were also present as well as Reverend Fathers C. O. Ebii, J. N. Uwalaka and U. I. Olekamma, Sister B. O. Ezeyi and S.A.R.P Iwu, Traditional Head, on behalf of the religious and lay faithful. The meeting, characterized by dialogue and listening, ended with a prayer to Mary and the Pope's blessing.
Below is the Holy Father’s text:

"I cordially greet the Delegation and thank you for coming from Nigeria in a spirit of pilgrimage.
For me, this meeting is a consolation because I am deeply saddened by the events of the Church in Ahiara.

In fact, the Church (and excuse the wording) is like a widow for having prevented the Bishop from coming to the Diocese. Many times I have thought about the parable of the murderous tenants, of which the Gospel speaks (cf. Mt 21:33-44), that want to grasp the inheritance. In this current situation the Diocese of Ahiara is without the bridegroom, has lost her fertility and cannot bear fruit. Whoever was opposed to Bishop Okpaleke taking possession of the Diocese wants to destroy the Church. This is forbidden; perhaps he does not realize it, but the Church is suffering as well as the People of God within her. The Pope cannot be indifferent.
I know very well the events that have been dragging on for years and I am thankful for the attitude of great patience of the Bishop, indeed the holy patience demonstrated by him. I listened and reflected much, even about the possibility of suppressing the Diocese, but then I thought that the Church is a mother and cannot abandon her many children. I feel great sorrow for those priests who are being manipulated even from abroad and from outside the Diocese.

I think that, in this case, we are not dealing with tribalism, but with an attempted taking of the vineyard of the Lord. The Church is a mother and whoever offends her commits a mortal sin, it’s very serious. However, I decided not to suppress the Diocese. Instead, I wish to give some indications that are to be communicated to all: first of all it must be said that the Pope is deeply saddened. Therefore, I ask that every priest or ecclesiastic incardinated in the Diocese of Ahiara, whether he resides there or works elsewhere, even abroad, write a letter addressed to me in which he asks for forgiveness; all must write individually and personally. We all must share this common sorrow. In the letter

1.one must clearly manifest total obedience to the Pope, and

2.whoever writes must be willing to accept the Bishop whom the Pope sends and has appointed.

3.The letter must be sent within 30 days, from today to July 9th, 2017. Whoever does not do this will be ipso facto suspended a divinis and will lose his current office.

This seems very hard, but why must the Pope do this? Because the people of God are scandalized. Jesus reminds us that whoever causes scandal must suffer the consequences. Maybe someone has been manipulated without having full awareness of the wound inflicted upon the ecclesial communion.

To you brothers and sisters, I would like to express my sincere thanks for your presence; and also to Cardinal Onaiyekan for his patience and to Bishop Okpaleke, whose patience and humility I admire. Thank you all". (Agenzia Fides, 09/06/2017)

Christianity EtcCatholic Archbishop Commits Suicide By Jumping Into The River by FMary(op): 5:06pm On Jun 01, 2017
The Archbishop of Bafia, Cameroon, Mgr Jean Marie Benoît Balla has reportedly taken his own life by jumping into the Sanaga River around the Ebebda Bridge in Cameroon.

The Catholic community launched a search for the clergyman after his Land Cruiser SUV with registration plate number CE 9503V was found on the Ebebda bridge Wednesday afternoon- about 90km from Yaounde.

A search of the vehicle revealed his ID card, driver’s license and car documents.

However, a handwritten note on the letter head of the diocese simply read “Je suis dans l’eau”, which translated into English as “I am in the water” was also found in the car, local news website, cameroon-info.net reported.

Naseri Paul Bea, Governor of the Centre region, the Divisional Officer of the locality and other administrative authorities were reported to have rushed to the scene with security forces.

The Divisional Officer, D.O, of Ebebda, told journalists that a Reverend Father informed him about the incident at about 1pm.

“I immediately ran to the scene and saw for myself. The car is truly here on the bridge and the note the Bishop left suggests he jumped into the river”, said the DO.
He also said no damage had been done to the car which indicates there was no violence.
