The lawmakers were said to have argued that the purchase of Toyota Prado Jeeps to the tune of almost N1billion was an unnecessary waste of funds when a similar vehicle produced by Innoson Motors Limited, Nnewi, would cost much less. . “We cannot be talking of ‘Aku lue uno’ (Support for local industry), without patronizing our local investors. In fact, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Uche Okafor should stop the planned purchase of SUV Prado Jeeps and ask the governor to rather get Innoson Jeeps for them.” Culled: http://www.informationng.com

Central Bank of Nigeria (FCT) recent cashless policy is applicable to Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Anambra, Kano, Abia and FCT only. What is the reason, or are they the most developed states in Nigeria or states with largest cash transactions volume ? Cc. Lalasticlara

South African authorities have granted landing permit to Air Peace Flight B777 to enable it to evacuate some 320 Nigerians escaping from xenophobia in that country, a Nigerian consular officer has confirmed. Nigeria ’s Consul-General in Johannesburg, Mr Godwin Adama, made the confirmation in a telephone interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday. Adama spoke against the background of a complaint by the Managing Director of Air Peace, Chief Allen Onyema. Onyema had said that the refusal of South Africa to grant the permit made it impossible for the flight to leave Lagos at 1a.m. for Johannesburg to convey the second batch of returnees. But Adama said the permit had been granted the airline and that the flight would be late in the night of Tuesday. Adama said, “They want Nigerians to arrive during the week, they are taking-off from here midnight. “I do not know the exact time but they will be leaving (South Africa) midnight. “I do not know why they were denied the landing permit. I think it is an airline operational issue. They did not get it yesterday but they told me that it came late yesterday (Monday). “It was weekend and they were going to get it this morning; the airline did not tell me it was deliberate, but they explained to me that they have gotten it. “Our manifest arrived last night towards the close of work and they were to take-off 1a.m. Nigerian time yesterday (Monday) but they did not because it was late. “I have gotten it now so they will be able to make me know the time of their arrival here so that we can know when to take-off.” Adama said buses provided to convey Nigerians wanting to return home were still at the mission premises and everyone was there. “We are still really working on the number (320) to see how we can fill up the airline capacity with anyone that is readily available. “We have more than enough, we are even trying to ensure that the aircraft is filled up that is why we are readily taking people who are on ground now. “We have more than enough to fill the aircraft, the delay has also helped us because as we call names to board we see some people cleared at the last minute. “The truth is they are people who have not been cleared, those who are ready to go are all here and we are trying to queue them up. “We may not even be able to take all of them who are hopeful,” he added. Adama said that the next batch of evacuation would be based on the Federal Government’s directives. While the tensions raised by the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa are yet to fizzle out, a top official of the South African government has dished out bitter words for African leaders whose citizens migrate to South Africa. Nigerians make up a large number of African migrants in South Africa and were among the most hit by the recent xenophobic violence. “We cannot absorb the results of all the problems that are made by leaders who want to loot their countries, who do not care about their own people,” Blade Nzimande, the South African minister of higher educations, science and technology, said on Monday in Durban, while commenting on the bashing of his country over the xenophobic attacks. Mr Nzimande’s remarks, reported by Sowetan Live, a South African news website, including several other local media in South Africa, coincided with the tendering of an apology to the people and government of Nigeria by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Special Envoy to Nigeria, Jeff Radebe. “We met a short while ago with President Muhammadu Buhari to convey our President Ramaphosa’s sincerest apologies about the incidents that have recently transpired in South Africa,” Mr Radebe told journalists in Abuja. “Those incidents do not represent what we stand for as constitutional democracy in South Africa.” Sowetan Live reported that Mr Nzimande was addressing a workers’ union in which he is the general secretary. “African leaders themselves must get their act together, such that they don’t destroy their country and people have to leave. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/352686-xenophobia-south-african-minister-blames-leaders-of-nigeria-other-african-countries.html

The government of South Africa led by Cyril Ramaphosa has sent three special envoys each to seven African countries to deliver messages of pan-African unity and solidarity following xenophobic attacks in the former apartheid enclave. Presidential spokesperson, Khusela Diko, who confirmed the development on Sunday, said the special envoys would reassure fellow African countries that South Africa was committed to the ideals of pan-African unity and solidarity. According to Diko, the envoys would also reaffirm South Africa’s commitment to the rule of law. “The envoys will visit Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. “They will brief governments in the identified African countries about the steps that the South African government is taking to bring a stop to the attacks and to hold the perpetrators to account,” Diko added. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/xenophobia-safrica-sends-3-envoys-each-to-nigeria-6-other-african-countries/

Nigerians who arrived on-board on Air peace flight as a result of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, have been promised by the Federal government to be given N40,000 Naira worth of air time, 9GB of data valid for 2 months as well as a soft loan from the Bank of Industry. While commending the management of Air Peace for the kind gesture, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM Abike Dabiri-Erewa stated this while receiving the returnees. Dabiri-Erewa said, “apart from transport stipend to convey them to their various destinations, for ease of communication, they are to receive SIM cards with N40,000 Naira worth of air time, plus 9GB of data valid for 2 months as well as a soft loan from the Bank of Industry to support those interested in small trade and businesses.” She added that a programme of reintegration will also be put in place subsequently. The returnees were thankful to President Buhari, the Chairman and management of Air Peace as well as the Consul-General in South Africa and the High Commission in Pretoria for their efforts in ensuring their successful return to Nigeria. Dabiri-Erewa said a “total of 187 Nigerians were evacuated, amongst whom over 30 were children and about 317 were initially billed to return on the flight which experienced over 15 hours delay by the South African authorities.’’ This development came as a result of the directive from President Muhammadu Buhari to evacuate Nigerians in South Africa willing to return home due to the recent xenophobic attacks. https://dailytimes.ng/breaking-fg-gives-n40000-airtime-9gb-data-to-187-returnees-from-south-africa/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR0xWKDO5thn6WxxTCLs4tUskMMhEr3GORhD67u8P91RCHKE-MP2xht1Vjw#Echobox=1568299615
