Herdsmen attack: FG has failed in her duty of protecting Tiv people -Tiv community UK

…says 2,000 Tivs killed in the last 3 yrs., 750 fatally injured while over 100,000 others made refuges

By Joseph Undu

Tiv community in the United Kingdom under the auspices of Mutual Union of the Tiv, (MUT), United Kingdom (UK), has criticized the federal government over her inability to protect the Tiv people of Benue State from the sword and guns of the invading Fulani herdsmen and other criminal elements which the government has claimed are behind the pogrom going on in the state.

According to a statement duly signed by the President of the group, Martin Akiga, Vice President Kuram Gwakyaa and the Social Secretary, Salome Biam on behalf of MUTUK management committee and sent to Vanguard Newspaper, the group called on all Tiv sons and daughters around the world to stand up against this evil and barbarism and say no to the Fulani herdsmen terror. The statement reads in part: “Over the past few years, the Fulani herdsmen occupation in Benue state has led to widespread deaths, seizure of indigenous lands and destruction of farmlands and produce.

“In the Last 3 years, 2,000 Tiv indigenes have been brutally killed and a further 750 seriously wounded or maimed. Approximately 100,000 men, women and children are made refugees as a result of incessant attack on Tiv people of Benue State. Mzough U Tiv UK (MUTUK) urges all Tiv sons and daughters around the world to stand up against this evil and barbarism and say no to the Fulani herdsmen terror.

” Continuing, the group said: “The Federal government of Nigeria has failed to address this dire situation and have failed in their duty to protect the people of Benue. The people of Benue spend each day in anxiety for the fear of becoming victims of this unprovoked cruelty of the Fulani herdsmen terrorism. “Many have watched their lives turned upside down, lost homes, lands and watched the murder of their loved ones. Enough is enough; our time of showing restraint is over. It’s time to say no to living in fear.

No to open grazing

The group also thrown its weight behind the bill banning open grazing in the state saying: “MUTUK supports unequivocally, the Bill banning open grazing that has been put forward to the Benue State House of Assembly.

“This needs to be passed immediately to facilitate the ejection of all Fulani Herdsmen from our state. Once the Bill is enacted, the government must ensure that it is powerfully enforced with the full strength of the law. The Fulani Herdsmen should go back to their respective states and leave us to farm peacefully on our indigenous lands. They have no right to our lands and they have no right to violate our people and property.

“The people of Benue state are not obliged to accommodate these herdsmen with our ancestral lands for the purpose of grazing. We do not owe these murderers anything. Whilst we respect the right of freedom of movement within Nigeria, occupying indigenous private lands does not form part of that right. “Our people are farmers and do not go to other states asking for ‘farming reserves’, our neighbouring states would never agree to this. Why should we create grazing reserves for these terrorists? MUTUK says a definitive NO to grazing reserves in Benue state! No to open grazing, no to Benue lands for Fulani herdsmen, no to living in fear and no to Fulani occupation of Benue valley.”

CrimeHerdsmen Clash With Farmers In Benue, 15 Killed by FoolishOmenka(op): 8:30am On Apr 04, 2017
MAKURDI—NO fewer than 15 persons were feared killed in an outbreak of fighting between herdsmen and farmers at Ipiga village in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.

Vanguard gathered from a source in the area that the crisis erupted Sunday afternoon, when some armed herdsmen stormed neigbouring Ajegbe village, where they grazed their cattle and destroyed farmlands.

The source said: “From there they moved into Ipiga village yesterday morning, shooting sporadically, though they met a stiff resistance from the locals.

“A bloody fight erupted; two of the herdsmen were reportedly killed, while about 13 of the villagers were also killed. However, many are still missing and unaccounted for.”

When contacted, the Senior Special Assistant to Benue State Governor on Fulani Matters, Alhaji Garus Gololo, said two herdsmen were killed in the crisis.

Gololo said: “I just came back from the area this afternoon (yesterday). Two herdsmen were killed by the villagers and many cows were also killed; others were rustled.

“I met the Ardo of the area and everyone has been warned against any form of reprisal attack and there was nothing like that because government had warned against this kind of crisis in the state.

“Though the body of one of the dead herdsmen has been recovered and is reportedly with the police, the search for the other is still ongoing.”

Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu said he was yet to receive detail of the crisis.

PoliticsHerdsmen Attacks: 60 Killed In Attacks On Benue State - Police Chief by FoolishOmenka(op): 10:28am On Mar 23, 2017
- About 60 people have died following seperate attacks by herdsmen in Benue state

- Suspected Fulani herdsmen have continued to plague agrarian communities in Benue

- Governor Ortom has declared that all Fulani herdsmen must leave the state with immediate effect

Emerging reports show that the death toll between 10th to 20th March has risen to 60 in Benue state, following alleged attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Nigeria’s police chief, Ibrahim K Idris says he is deploying a special tactical force to deal with the continuing violence.

The police special tactical force is to comprise of Police Mobile Force (PMF specially trained Anti Riot Policemen), Counter Terrorism Units, Conventional Policemen, Special Anti Robbery Squad, SIB, detachment of EOD, Police K9 (Sniffer Dogs Section), Police Air wing (Aerial Surveillance Helicopters) and other undercover operatives.

According to a police statement obtained by NAIJ.com, the police special tactical force is led by the commissioner of police in charge of PMF, Force Headquarters in Abuja, under the supervision of deputy Inspector General of Police, department of operations.

The attack on Friday March 10, began in Mkgovur village, on the outskirts of Buruku town. When the Hausa Fulani Muslim herders were prevented from grazing their cattle on the farms of the indigenous Christian community, they came back later, armed with sophisticated weapons.

They shot and killed anything in sight. By the time the villagers realised, about ten people had been killed; several others were missing. Others had to flee to the neighbouring Gboko Local Government Area.

Mallam Garus Gololo, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association (an umbrella organisation that looks after the interests of the Hausa Fulani Muslim herders across West Africa), denied that the attack was carried out by the herders in Benue state.

He claimed that the attackers were not the ‘ordinary’ Fulani who, he said, ‘have no other interests than to look after their herds.’ He told This Day Live that they may have come from another Middle Belt State, Taraba.

There are also reports that this particular Fulani group are too heavily armed and very sophisticated, that they seem to come from places beyond Nigeria, as the Governor of a third Middle Belt state, Kaduna, has affirmed about Fulani attacks in his state.

However, the recent Fulani attackers appeared to have a good geographical knowledge of the local communities and the villages. After the attack in Mkgovur, another attack was carried out two days later in the village of Tombo-Mbalagh, Buruku LGA. This Hausa Fulani Muslim herdsmen attack was directed mostly against an unarmed Christian population going about its normal business. About eight people were killed and three others were reported missing.

There are other attacks that have been recorded within the given time frame.

Speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday, March 15 , the state governor, Samuel Ortom confirmed that there is a limit to which he can ask the people of the state to be patient.

If the federal government did not intervene, locals say retaliatory attacks will not be ruled out.

PoliticsCatholic Bishop Tells Pro-biafra Agitators Secession Is Not Answer To Nigeria’s by FoolishOmenka(op): 11:47am On Mar 08, 2017
Pro-Biafra agitators have been advised by the Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese Bishop Charles Harmawa to drop their calls for separation from Nigeria.

According to the northern Christian leader, breaking out of Nigeria is never the solution to marginalisation cry by some regions and there was no guarantee that if the agitators finally got their country, the issue of marginalization would not still crop up.

Harmawa told Daily Sun that Nigerian leaders should find a way of addressing the issues of injustices and discrimination.

He said: “In the first place, people have the right to self determination but there is a procedure towards attaining that.

“Again, I find the argument that Nigerians are group of strange fellows, flimsy because this is not peculiar to Nigeria. There are so many countries in the world that are divided along these lines as Nigeria.

“Why do we still seek international relations while we are so different in our cultural, political and religious affiliations? It is because we are a race and cannot live without one another. So we need to have a rethink on this issue.

“I am well aware of the injustices in all its forms and the level of marginalization in the country and strongly suggest that these issues should be addressed and urgently too, but the solution is not in going our separate ways.

“In any case, there is no guarantee whatsoever that if you are granted independence, you would not have problems in your own country based on differences of clan and other variables.

“The same mismanagement of funds that has crippled the country today is also prevalent at the regional, state and local government levels.”

To end the issue, the Catholic cleric suggested: “it is not about secession. It shouldn’t be.

“We should be more concerned with how to address the injustices and discrimination, the uneven distribution of resources and others and think more on how we can live together as a country because, like it or not, we are one country and a there is beauty in our diversity.”

Meanwhile, Senator Shehu Sani, the representative of Kaduna Central at the upper house of legislature, has slammed the Nigerian government for refusing to honour rulings from the ECOWAS court on Nnamdi Kanu, leader of pro-Biafra group IPOB.

Sani made this remark in a social media post after the ECOWAS court, sitting in Abuja, threw out an application by the federal government seeking the court to reject an application brought by Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
