Cutting costs is as important to businesses just as oxygen is to man. High cost of doing business is the surest way of suffocating the enterprise, even though it may be making some measure of profit. The economic recession which found its way into the Nigerian economy has made it even more imperative to minimise cost, even as a startup enterprise.

While we may not be talking about profit making here. We however, will be considering a number of ways through which a startup enterpreneur may reduce the cost of doing business and waddle through the murky waters of entrepreneurship.

Stay Virtual
The excitement of making some profit off your first sales or getting massive referrals and recommendations, may be so overwhelming that you actually don't get to sit and decide if your startup is ripe enough for an office space. The image and ambience of a formal office may be enticing too but is it adding any kobo to the revenue? Not to forget that renting or leasing an office space doesn't come cheap and may put a huge hole in the purse of a young enterpreneur. Nobody is saying that getting an office space isn't a wonderful idea, but the big question is: is the cost commesurate with the expected revenue? If the office space and location goes to the very root of the business, then why not give it a try? For a startup, it is more advisable to share an office space with another startup or other business, so as to save more money which can be further used to employ more hands for better productivity.
The new trend is for startups to remain virtual and hover around the cyberspace until they are financially strong enough to own an office space. Irrespective of what aspect of enterpreneurship you may be into. A number of businesses even remain online and still carry on business, thereby saving costs on office space, electric bills and even taxes. For example: Seun Osewa's nairaland.com and until recently, linda ikeji's blog.

Buy Wholesales
Another way a startup enterpreneur incurs cost is by buying things needed for the enterprise in little quantities. The idea is to reduce spending, but in the long run it does the opposite, as more monies are expended for less. Take for example; office stationeries, the more the cheaper. Same thing applies for almost all things needed for running the business. It even affords you the right to ask for a discount from the seller. That way, you reduce cost of transport and also it covers for an unforseen inflation, should the price increase later.
Buying in bulk makes you a prime customer or client to your suppliers. The advantages are numerous, as you may ask for supplies and pay later or that you may ask for up to three different quotations from different suppliers so as to get the real market price and thus avoid overspending.

Automate Your Processes
There are a number of specialized services that a startup entrepreneur will be needing in his business as soon as the enterprise moves up the growth chart. For example, you'll be needing the services of an accountant or a personal assistant. This comes at considerable cost to the purse of the entrepreneur. There are a number of softwares or apps that van effectively do the job(s) required and would only need an administrator, (which may be the entrepreneur himself). Also, only employ for your weakness, for things you can't do yourself. If you can handle an extra position, do it. Chances are, you'll do it with more passion than an employee.

Hire Cheap
Getting the right and qualified workers for startup could be of immense benefit to the enterprise but may be drilling a hole in the pockets of the enterprise, if they are yet to get a financial breakthrough. You may want to get the free services of friends and family on specific tasks or even employ freelance or casual workers who may be cheaper than the usual employee, and still provide the same service. A sure way of getting cheap labour in Nigeria is to employ the services of interns or Youth Corpers of the NYSC. With a little stipend or salary, you are sure of getting an almost equal service as a full time employee would give. A startup should not be burdened down with crazy overhead costs as salaries.

Prioritize And Review Costs
There are some expenditures that expensive, yet very necessary. The young enterpreneur, interested in reducing cost, must find a way to set aside the things that not immediately or directly beneficial to the profit making of the organisation. Some expenses should be pruned down or outrightly dispensed with. For instance, expensive swivel chairs, air-conditioning systems, vacation tours, luxury personal car(s) e.t.c. Pay attention to little details. Little things matter in finances.
You may want to also review all telephone, internet and other subscriptions. Discover how they add to the business and pay accordingly. You may consider delaying payments also for supplies that are not immediately needed for the enterprise.

The good thing about cutting costs is that it puts you in a better position to assess the progress or otherwise of your enterprise. The more you spend on important things, the more you get eager to make the money back. Provided your business strategy is tested and trusted to guarantee financial returns.

Business / How To Manage A Startup Business Growth by FoundersNG: 4:23pm On Sep 25, 2017
It is common knowledge that the bigger a company gets the slower it becomes. Common decision making takes a longer process to actualise. The upward scale of an enterprise signifies a certain level of achievement for the founder(s), but not everybody can manage these exposures. Some enterprenuers are best suited for their small cubicle businesses without overstretching their qualities.

By default, every startup enterprise is designed for growth, but when it comes many find it unable to cope with or manage. Growth for a startup is multidimensional. It could mean an increase in sales or demand for products and services, increase in clienteles or even scaling - which is an upward review of organizational and managerial changes. Here are some of the facets of business that witnesses changes due to growth:

Team Members
The good thing about expansions in business is that it takes more duties off the entrepreneur. As the business begins to expand into specialised departments, more and more hands are needed to man several duties. The leader will have to start entrusting some things into the hands of some new faces.
On the flip side, the leader gets the opportunity to interview more qualified candidates into new openings, unlike what obtained before. As the company expands you spend more time trying to coordinate the activities of the expanding members than actually doing the service your organization sets out to do. Managing interpersonal problems is also a challenge that comes with expansions and growth in business, and the startup leader must be prepared for such eventuality.
A business enterprise looking forward to scale, needs to find experienced senior executives to guide the business forward, particularly when product-market is found and the startup is ready for serious growth.

Clients/Customers
Production is never complete until the goods get to the fina consumer(s). Expansion in business means the traditional ways of delivering services to the earlier clients and customers would begin to experience the dynamics of business. There would be need to reach out to a larger population in a faster and simpler way.
It is pertinent at this stage to always keep the feedback line open and never ignore the suggestions and opinions of your customers. In them lie the keys to the management of your enterprise' new status. Exerienced entrepreneurs define clear key performance indicators (KPIs) for each department and sometimes each employee at the company so they always have a view on what is working and what should be improved upon, with a view to how it affects service delivery to the end clients/customers.

Office Space/ Equipment
The most physical change noticeable with an upward growth in an enterprise is the need to acquire more space for office duties or equipment. Most startup firms can conveniently remain virtual and work from anywhere where there's internet access, but as soon as the investment goes upward, there's always the next level step. Linda Ikeji had this challenge too when she had to get more hands to help out with her blogging and acquire more office space for the new recruits. It went behind what she can handle alone!
As sales begin to pour in and demands for products and service are becoming overwhelming, more and more equipment would be needed to cater to that need. When the founders of Printivo found it hard to match demands with the little equipment and space they had, it was time they moved to where the demands came from! Timing is key here, as many entrepreneurs mistake the first boom in sales as the pointer to expansion of business and purchase of more equipment, thereby further putting a strain of the company's purse. There should be careful analysis of what necessitated the growth and how sustainable it is to warrant an expansion. Leadership here is key!

Legal
When a Venture Capitalist invested $1.2 million into the startup firm of Toilet.com.ng it became apparent that they would be needing a new way of doing business, and to be better protected, they need a legal department or a good law firm to help iron out the grey areas of the establishment.
According to S. 572 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act, Where a persons carries on business as a Sole Proprietor in his natural name, the law does not require such a person to register , but where the person carries on busininess under a pseudonym, he is by the provision the law required to register such.
Also, in the event of an expansion as a result of growth, necessitating mergers, acquisitions or partnerships like jobberman, wakanow and the likes, closer attention to details is required by the startup entrepreneur so as to avoid the kind of legal pitfall that befell Yarnable in its quest for mergers and took if off the Nigerian cyberspace.

Conclusively, when the firm is moving up the organizational chart is the right moment to seek out a mentor, who has been through that stage of the business. Pride and ego is the only challenge here as most young entrepreneurs ignore this step and come crashing soon after.
“So please, take it from me: no matter how incredibly smart you think you are, or how brilliant, disruptive or plain off-the-wall your new concept might be, every start-up team needs at least one good mentor.” - Richard Branson

Career / How To Maintain Discipline At Work Place by FoundersNG: 4:50pm On Sep 20, 2017
Discipline is never a friendly word. Human nature makes everyone try to shy away from restraints on any form of freedom we enjoy. However, maintaining a scalable startup enterprise would require a great deal of discipline from both the enterpreneur and members of his team. According to George Washington: "Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak, and esteem to all."

The importance of maintaining focus, peace and energy at the work place cannot be over emphasised. And discipline holds the key to these. Irrespective of the diverse backgrounds and outlooks of life of the various members of staff, the team leader has a duty to keep the members in line. In many companies, the human resource department has the sole responsibility of maintaining these checks and a congenial work environment. However, a startup enterprise may not have the luxury of a specialised department as such, so the team leader or another does the job of HR department - maintaining checks.

Effective discipline can help correct or restore the erring employee's behavioral challenge(s) and should always be aimed towards increased productivity. It is noteworthy that when an individual is disciplined, he tends to attract an enduring success in almost all spheres of life. And a well regulated business enterprise would have less worry about law suits from aggrieved workers, in as much as these regulations are within the ambits of the Nigerian Labour Act. Then, how do keep my team members in line?

Check The Mirror
The first person to bear the brunt of discipline is the man in the mirror - you! As a startup leader, you owe your team members the duty to be responsible and alive to your tasks! No one wants to listen to a man whose ways of life reeks of gross indiscipline, recklessness and is always shifting blames.
As the head of a business enterprise, the team leader, change begins with you. The perfect brand ambassador is you and your actions or inactions must reflect this! Business 101 teaches that: you should never be late to your own meeting.. Dress like you should and not as you feel. Knowing that the diligence you exude goes along way to inspire or de-motivate your team members. You must always reflect the company's corporate culture. No one but YOU are the first on the front line for discipline! And as William Penn puts it:
"No man is fit to command another, that cannot command himself."

Remove All Distractions
Sometimes, it is better to remove every form of distractions from the work place so as not to make the your team members lose focus on what's important. The danger here is, if permitted for long, they start seeing such 'distractions' as a right!
Most firms block the workers from accessing social media sites while at work. If there must be a TV, then it must be restricted to only the news channel. Other distractions may come from the outlay or comfort at the work environment. In as much as going to work should be fun, the 'fun' should be limited, otherwise, productivity will go down the slope. However, having a younger workforce implies that your approach to discipline is different from when you have a much older members of staff.

Make Clear Rules
From the recruitment stage, all employees should be handed a concise copy of the code of conduct in your establishment. Ignorance of the law (rules) is no excuse. Rules must not only be made, but also adhered to. A late comer must get an oral warning by the team leader and subsequent late comings should draw a query. The offender must know what offences attract pay cuts, suspensions and in extreme cases - dismissal.
The idea is that every erring employee must be able to defend his or her actions, and when wrong, must also be able to admit to the wrong doing.

Give Your Team The Space To Work
As a leader, you don't want to be the one always breathing down the necks of your team members and leading them into confusions and mistakes through unnecessary pressures. Guide them and let them be! No one is perfect and everyone can make mistakes. Let your team members also enjoy independent thoughts about the tasks at hand. Ideas and innovations may come from them too!
All workers have a similar prayer - not to have an overbearing superior. Conflicts are bound to occur in such situations and it may lead to termination or resignation of a valuable staff.

Open All Communication Channels
There must be an easy access to the superiors in a work place, to enable free flow of ideas and opinions. More so, when there is a conflict of opinions.. The errant team member must be able to channel his grievances in the manner prescribed by the company, believing that there will be a fair hearing.
Discipline comes when the offender can communicate his concerns without any fear or doubt. There had been reported instances of wrongful penalties or outright dismissals meted out to workers who were not given the chance to defend themselves. And of course this would lead to legal battles, the resultant effect of which, is a big distraction for the enterprise at large.

To wrap up, having a balance of discipline at work entails that the members of staff must be able to see that they have erred. And justice must not only be done, but must also be seen to be done! In as much as walking the straight line of discipline is not easy in any social gathering, it is advisable as a team leader, to always appreciate, recognise and give incentives to those who have adhered to the rules of the company.
"If we don't discipline ourselves, the world will do it for us." - William Feather

Business / How To Get The Perfect Startup Business Ideas by FoundersNG: 6:57am On Sep 14, 2017
Many fascinating businesses come from simple thoughts and ideas. And these ideas are not the exclusive preserve of these entrepreneurs. Ideas could flow to just anybody, what gives it life is the timely and direct actions taken on the idea(s). Even after we seem to have suddenly discovered a goldmine million naira business idea, chances are, some people have thought about it too, and some may be acting on the same line of thoughts, but you can still find a way to make your enterprise different from what is obtainable.

How do we get these ideas? Many budding entrepreneurs have asked. The simple truth is that it mostly doesn't come from idea brainstorming sessions in business schools but from our simple day-to-day activities. The best ideas are mostly from entrepreneurs who had failed with several other business ideas. Seun Osewa's nairaland.com is probably the last of the series of blogs, forums and online tech solution websites he had set up and failed. He just kept on acting on new ideas that became improvements on his failures. Now, nairaland.com is the single most viewed website in Nigeria with the highest hits! Only surpassed by Facebook.

According to Paul Graham, of Y-Combinator; "The way to get startup ideas is not to try to think of startup ideas. It's to look for problems, preferably problems you have yourself." Consider your daily routines, what problem(s) or challenge(s) do you encounter? How effective are they being solved presently? How is the service delivery? Do you think you can actually do it better? These are some of the questions the entrepreneur minded individual asks, that's the first way of separating the men of thoughts from the boys! Think smart!

Get Away From The Crowd
Ideas come silently to individual minds, not to the crowd. You need to take a break from the routines of life and find a secluded place where you can listen to your thoughts and stimulate an idea. Scientists have discovered that ideas generate best when your brain is at a lower, more relaxed, state called the alpha state, much unlike the beta waves we produced when engaged in our daily chores, of which the end product is stress. Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School, discovered that people who access this alpha state tend to demonstrate superior performance on both physical and mental tests. Let you mind wander into that relaxed state and exploit its creativity.
Start small but think Big. Is your idea scalable? What are the growth prospects? Have a target, which may be quite narrow to start, but be able to enlarge your scope as your idea develops.

Do Your Homework
It is not enough to have the amazingly brilliant idea no one has ever thought of, you have to get off the high horse and do some digging! Research more about your area of interest(s), get to know things are done, where to go and who to meet. There's always a little knowledge on the street that could sharpen your enterprise.
Today there are several startups directory sites where people list their startups with the goal to get exposure for their brands and for link building, an example is vconnect.com. You can also ask questions on forums like Nairaland, Reddit and Qoura on your area of interest and get positive responses from experienced hands. No man is an island!

Fill An Urgent Need
No matter how plausible your idea may be taking shape or materializing, if it is not to meet an urgent demand, then you should probably forget about the whole idea. You must solve an immediate need. You drive on the road and complain of traffic, heat, noise, long routes to work etc. These are challenges and they are goldmines for soft drink enterprenuers like Pepsi, Lacasera, Coke, Gala and the rest. Google map is cashing in on the need for a shorter route to your destinations. While, right there in the traffic in Lagos you can virtually buy anything handy! These are people who are thinking! People who see challenges as opportunities and are exploiting them.
A dream delayed is a dream forgotten. Get to work fast, put down your blue print, establish your mark in that industry, give your competitors a run for their money, be consistent at it, and make your impact be felt.. But first, start!

Consult Widely
Even as the startup is taking its first steps, you need constant consultations. You don't want to be the only one who understands what you do. You need to hear first from your family and friends, they may not be objective enough, but their words of encouragement surpasses that of any other group. Your workers are also to be listened to. Ask questions every now and then. Let them tell you how they think you are faring. The clients/customers are your surest bet at objectivity. They want value for their money and their feedbacks are usually immeasurable to sharpen the company. Customer care should always be a two way communication channel, let them tell you how you can serve them better.
Above all, get a mentor. Someone who has tasted defeat in business but is still standing strong in your line of business. A force to be reckoned with. Let them give you practical lessons of how it should be done. They obviously have gone past the crawling stage of entrepreneurship. Listen to them!

Conclusion
Ideas are free thoughts like the wind. It chooses to blow wherever it wants. It may come while in the shower, at dinner or even while strolling. As much as the prospective entrepreneur is expected to get the light bulb flickered on in his mind, it can also be a product of an intense and constructive brainstorming, but sustainability may be an issue, as no one can sufficiently interpret what you have in mind.
The beautiful thing about startup is, there is no rule against copy and paste! An innovative business may be the toast of the town but you can also do it that way too - differently. There are a number of bloggers who are currently copying the style of Linda Ikeji, a lot of Make up Artists toeing the lines of Tara Fela-Durotoye, and many e-commerce websites following the business plans of Kings and Jumia. So go on, get your business out on the streets!

Jobs/Vacancies / How To Hire Your First Workers by FoundersNG: 6:56am On Sep 07, 2017
Starting a new enterprise can be both exciting and draining - emotionally and physically. You have to be everything and at everywhere. You play all roles. Even those you are not good at. It's your dream, and youvdint expect another person to bring it to life but you. The thing is, you can't be multi-tasking and still function effectively with the services your outfit sets to offer. You just have yo employ extra hands to take some burdens off your shoulder. And getting the right people to pass and manage the torch of your corporate culture is important. That is why your first hire is just as important as your getting your first client.

Convincing the right and qualified candidates can be a bit tricky for early startups too, bearing in mind that the suitably qualified personnel would more readily want to identify with a known or established industry brand. It makes one assume that those who apply to startups are not really competitive enough, knowing they would be earning less than their counterparts. However, for a leader of a startup, there are still a number of ways to corner capable hands to your startup.

Know why you are hiring
As the leader of a startup, you need new hires in virtually all positions, but you can't just go about letting huge wage bills weigh your new enterprise down. You have to prioritize the positions. You'll be needing your first hires to multi-task as much as you probably are doing at the moment. It should be part of the negotiations. The right candidate should be able to see the company as a startup and not an established company. Hiring specific professionals would largely depend on where your startup is located on the
growth curve. The leader should be able to detect why and the right moment to 'risk' hiring.

Delegate the process
If you don't have the luxury of time to start multi-tasking, just like most startups, you should delegate the first stage of the hiring process to some qualified hands to help you prune down the workload of entries that may come your way. Consult friends who have hired for specific roles ( marketing, sales, engineering or administrative ) to learn where to source the best candidates, how to effectively review resumes, better questions to ask and ways to determine the final selections. And if an ad-hoc team is on ground already, have them meet and interview potential hires to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and agrees on the best fit.You don't want to neglect the very reason why you are hiring to something others can do for you, while you devote more time to the core services your enterprise sets out to do.

Due diligence
The assumption is that the list has been pruned down with the help of others, now you are faced with the shortlisted candidates. This part can't be delegated they are your prospective team members. Get to know them, have them relate with you. Listen to them, away from the things put down in their résumés. Know if they have transferrable skills for the position you are hiring for. Be careful to observe things important to them and respond to them. If you miss it, you start with the wrong foot. Hiring the wrong person for your team can be worse than not having anyone at all.

Relate with the candidates
Interact with the candidates. Sell the brand, vision and mission to them, see how much they buy it. For small teams, every new employee has a profound effect on team culture and norms. They will market your brand beyond your imaginations, even if not successful in the interview process. Let them demonstrate their potentials and not credentials. Test their abilities.

Table realistic remunerations
As a startup, never make the mistake of being a crowd pleaser. In a bid to retain a candidate, never make promises you can't fulfill, especially when it concerns remunerations and other work conditions. Make sure you convey a holistic offer, meaning that you reinforce the cultural aspects as well as the monetary ones. Things like flexible work schedules, a social culture (frequent events for staff to connect as people, not just as colleagues), or even a shorter commute may be very attractive to some people. Be clear about what you can offer, and let the candidates decide.

Dont assume, retrain
Happy that the preferred candidate(s) had been selected? you don't just dust your shoulder and expect the new member of the team to carry on without trainings or supervisions. In real fact, they need real hands-on experience on the peculiarities of your outfit. Trim them to your shape and taste. Trainings may not be as elaborate as that of established firms. A little supervision, a memo on the notice board or a little guide would do.

Get your legal documents handy
Seal up the deal in black and white! Get the details of the contract on paper. It is the evidence of acceptance of your offer. And when you’re laser-focused on revenue and market development, the last thing you need is a legal headache. Knowing that everyone is officially taken care of means that you can focus on what matters most.

Getting focused on the work at hand for the leader of a startup is a very difficult thing. Many aspects of the build up might actually be a distraction to the real services offered by the firm. Why not delegate the process of hiring, so the process don't weigh in on the quality of services offered? It is proper also to know how to balance the priorities.

Career / Qualities Of Good Leadership In Business by FoundersNG: 7:07am On Sep 06, 2017
Common as the word 'leadership' is, there is no generally accepted definition of it. Just as it may reflect a natural way of life to someone, it may be a height of attainment to others. But one thing remains constant.. Leadership is that ability of a person to inspire others to do a task they ordinarily would not have done. Leadership is not restricted to a sphere of life, as it can be observed in the family, school church, society, business and political settings. Many people in third world countries (like Nigeria) find it hard to distinguish between leadership and rulership. This may be borne out of past political experience, and has thus rubbed off on the way we conduct our affairs, even in business. Just as John Quincy Adams put it:
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader"

However you see yourself, whatever your age may be, as soon as you make that exciting first hire, you have taken the first steps in becoming a powerful leader. In business, Ownership does not of necessity transfer effective leadership skills on an individual. In fact, the two are poles apart. The fact that I can rent an office space, register a company and pull out a good business idea, does not mean that I have what it takes to make it a going concern. The world is getting more and more specialised.. That means, I would need certain people to run certain areas of the firm. And the key thing here is human management. If I can't, then I can hire people to do that. Have you ever wondered why the richest entrepreneurs seem to do less but lots of delegation? Check out Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola, Mike Adenuga etc. They seem to understand this rule of leadership. There are some qualities that point to effective leadership skills, :

Inspiration
A good leader must know how to inspire others. He must be able to motivate his team in the beginning stages of a startup, inspire his team to see the vision of the successes to come. He must be able to recognise when the team morale is low, when to start a pep talk, organise a bonus system for the team, when to acknowledge the team efforts, when to get in the turf and turn thing around by himself and not delegate. Inspiring others in workpkaces is more of actions than words. "The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority" -Ken Blanchard

Delegation
Trust is the vital ingredient in delegation. A leader must be able to trust his team enough to make some defining actions and decisons about the business. To delegate is identify the strengths of your team, and capitalizing on them. Find out what each team member enjoys doing most. Chances are if they find that task more enjoyable, they will likely put more thought and effort behind it.

Integrity
Integrity cannot be bought with any price, in business, people are number one, not just your clients and customrers, but your workers. They must observe fairness in your decision making. Be honest, fair, candid and forthright, and treat everyone in the same way that you yourself would want to be treated. Whatever ethical plane you hold yourself to, when you are responsible for a team of people, its important to raise the bar even higher. As Peter Drucker puts it: "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things".

Optimism/Confidence
Alexander The Great once said: "I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion". The team leader in a business set up, must know how to stir the team with confidence especially at times when the outlook is not as rosy as planned. The brand ambassador is you, so the optimism and confidence you exude translates to calmness around the office. There is no sailor who will abandon his ship even if it is obvious it will sink.

Communication
It is not enough to have a crystal clear idea about the organization's goals, visions and missions. How it is passed down to every worker on the organization chart is even more important. I once had a lecturer in the University who taught us Law of Evidence. He was one of the poorest communicators and students had to go extra miles to understand the course. Even though he was the top of the his class at Ph.D level. He just didn't know how to disseminate the information he had. Morale is linked to productivity, and it’s your job as the team leader to instill a positive energy. A little humour here and there could pass a vital information. Decision making
