I believe Barca board planned to achieve a sale this summer anyway by alienating his 2 best friends, Suarez and Vidal and even telling them they can leave for free. I believe they are calculating that raising £200m from Messi and getting rid of his wage and Suarez wage would put them back on a decent financial footing. They may actually then start to see performance from Coutinho, Dembele et al.

With this transfer request, a bid of £100-£200m might actually see Messi leave.
