Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway: Successful Controlled Explosion Conducted for Bridge Repair.
The Enugu government informed residents about a planned controlled explosion on the damaged bridge along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway as part of their repair efforts.

The exercise involves the anti-bomb unit of the police, zonal mines officers, and the explosive unit of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Residents were advised to be cautious and avoid unnecessary panic during this process.

The explosion aims to aid in restoring the failed bridge, and the announcement aimed to prevent panic among the citizens in the area and the entirety of Enugu.

Charging occurred on December 1st, 2023, at 2:00 pm, followed by blasting on December 2nd, 2023, at 3:00 am.

It was learned that the bridge caved in affecting two lorries conveying goods that were on the bridge when the incident occurred.

According to an eyewitness, drivers and conductors of the two lorries, escaped death by a whisker.

Further checks revealed that one lane of the dual-carriageway had been blocked by the debris of the collapsed bridge forcing motorists plying the road to divert through alternative routes for their journey.

Security operatives, officials of the Federal and Enugu State Ministries of Works, Federal Road Maintenance Agency, and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were sighted within the area to assess the situation as well as to assist the road users plying the alternative routes.

Meanwhile, Governor Peter Mbah has called for a new road maintenance model to guarantee better condition and longevity of Nigerians roads, regretting that the current model had failed woefully.

Dr. Mbah made the call when he visited the site of the collapsed bridge between the New Artisan flyover and the NNPC Mega Station along the Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway.

Fielding questions from newsmen after the first-hand inspection of the scene of the disaster, Mbah who thanked God that no life was lost despite the magnitude of the incident, urged the federal government to consider a concession of all the federal roads in each state to the state governments for proper maintenance in conjunction with the private sector.

“I think the question should be whether the current model of federal road maintenance is working or not; and I think that is the bigger question that we must ask.

“Today, we are here witnessing a tragedy that has just occurred. We are fortunate enough that no life was lost, but this could have been prevented entirely. So, the people can no longer ply this route because of this tragedy. This shows clearly that we do not have a sound federal road maintenance model.

“The bridge collapse didn’t just happen. These threats could have been identified if we had routine or regular maintenance.

“Perhaps the way to go is to find a way to concession these roads to the states. The states need to take charge of the roads within their domains and there has to be a conversation around the funding models”.

The said bridge collapsed on Monday, leaving commuters stranded.

Meanwhile, in a statement signed by the Enugu State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Gerald Otiji, the government has advised commuters to use Nza Street through New Haven or ply Ogui Road and Abakaliki Road to their various destinations, while the authorities come up with measures for immediate repair of the failed section of the bridge.

Naira Scarcity: Governors Give Malami, Emefiele Tuesday Ultimatum To Obey Supreme Court

The state governments that sued the Federal Government on the naira redesign policy gave the ultimatum.

The state governments threatened to file contempt charges against Malami and Emefiele on Tuesday if they fail to obey the ruling of the apex court.

Recall that the Supreme Court had ordered that the old N1,000, N500 and N200 should be in circulation alongside the new notes till December 31, 2023.

However, days after the ruling of the apex court, Malami and the CBN had been silent over the verdict.

The Federal Government on Friday was served with the enrolled order and Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment ordering the use of old notes as legal tender for 10 months.

According to Punch, the counsel for Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states, which dragged the Federal Government before the Supreme Court on the matter, Abdulhakeem Mustapha (SAN), disclosed that Malami was served with the enrolled order and the CTC of the judgment on Friday afternoon.

Mustapha noted that he expected immediate compliance with the judgment as the non-service of the documents had given the government and the CBN an escape route.

He said, “The Attorney-General of the Federation has been served now and we will take it up from there; if there is no compliance now, we will commence committal proceedings against the attorney-general and the CBN governor.”

The Zamfara State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Junaidu Aminu speaking on the failure of the Federal Government to comply with the apex court ruling said the plaintiffs in the suit would approach the court again to ensure compliance with the court’s order.

Aminu while speaking with Punch said that the states would file contempt charges against the Federal Government on Tuesday.

He said, “We have just served the Attorney General of the Federation with the Certified True Copy of the Enrolled Order of the Supreme Court last Friday. We are waiting for them to respect the court’s decision on the naira notes and comply with the decision. If they fail to comply on Monday, we are filing our case on Tuesday.”

The AG insisted that Emefiele must address Nigerians on the naira notes issued on or before Monday (today), noting that “that is what Nigerians are waiting for.”

“If he fails to do so, we will go back to court again to sue him and the Federal Government on contempt charges.”

The Zamfara State justice commissioner explained that it was the duty of the AGF to direct the CBN governor to implement the court’s verdict on the naira notes.

Aminu further said, “The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, is the one who should direct the CBN to comply with the Supreme Court’s verdict and allow the old naira notes to remain legal tender until December 31.”

Explaining why the CBN governor was not a party in the matter, he stated, “The matter is between some states and the Federal Government. The CBN governor is an ordinary civil servant who receives directives from the Federal Government.”

The Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dayo Apata (SAN) while speaking with Punch also said the state would align with other states on whatever legal steps would make the Federal Government comply with the Supreme Court judgment on the naira redesign and cash swap policy.

Apata said, “Definitely, we are all in the same boat and what is important to us is to ensure compliance with the court order. So, whatever we will do legally that will make the parties comply, we will align with it.

“Whatever that is going to be legally possible for us to achieve the aims and objectives of our going to court, we will align with other states.”

The likes of Kogi State, Cross River State and Ondo State vowed to join the suit if filed against Malami and Emefiele.

Foremost of the frontrunners, Peter Ndubisi Mbah, 50, attorney at law, and native of Owo, in Nkanu East Local Government Area, is the governorship candidate of the PDP. Quiet, unassuming and soft spoken, he is an innovative business entrepreneur based in Lagos. He first got into the politics of Enugu State on invitation by Governor Chimaroke Nnamani. That was about 2003. First appointed the Chief of Staff, he later became the Commissioner for Finance. Then, as now, he was always benign, focused and purposeful. He avoided the rattles, rancor and razzmatazz of politics, especially the political circuses. Many actually thought that he was either shy or timid. And immediately after government, he proceeded back to Lagos, where he threw himself back into both formative and heady businesses. He never looked back, and had soon emerged a billionaire, at least in the Naira. Today, he plays in sectors like finance, investment, tourism/hospitality, real estate as well asthe heady oil & gas, among others.

Mba was then not a first timer in businessman. He actually went into trading immediately after secondary education, buying and selling commodities and stuffs on the West coast – Lagos, Cotonou, Lome and Accra – among other merchantile routes along the Atlantic. Prior to joining government, he had already established and ran thriving private high schools in Lagos – the Focus International Schools Group. He had run a thriving trading company and had become rich when he went for his degree in Law. This makes it laughable when people make the spurious claims that he got rich by his participation in Government in Enugu State.

Not true. Mbah became the Chief of Staff about the same time I was appointed a Commissioner, having been upgraded from my position as Chief Press Secretary. Mbah has always been an ambitious businessman, who always complained, albeit quietly, that he missed his business runs. For those close to him, he never hid his dislike for being in political circle where some inexplicable bickering, often not leading to making business and trading deals, were endless.

He commenced the oil & gas business from the scratch and made sudden strides by what he still calls simple disruptive innovation. He was the first to start out on what is called, ‘ship-to-dock barging.’ This is a kind of spot oil trading business. This meant running barges from tankers at high sea to docks, which helped in solving the problem of vessels waiting for months on end before securing the anchorage slots to enter and offload at the docks. Big players in the industry hardly considered such liberalized method of easing of the high pressure of lifting oil from giant tankers at sea to the docks. Before long, his business innovative was thriving and lucrative and he was in an upward swing in the field. So, when Mbah talks about ‘disruptive innovation’ as a kernel of his development plans, he appears to be stating what worked astoundingly for him..

Second of the quadruped is Frank Nweke Jnr, 57, of the APGA. He is a native of Ishi-Ozala in Nkanu West Local Government Area. He was the sleek, smooth, suave and urbane minister of Information in the Olusegun Obasanjo Federal Administration of 2004 to 2007. He first served as a Member of the Enugu Economic Team, 1999 – 2002, before he became the Chief of Staff to Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, he was actually succeeded by Dr. Mbah as he proceeded to Abuja to become a Minister. Contrary to the claims that Nnamani could not be challenged by his subordinates, this writer was a witness to many incidences where Nweke quietly, steadily and stubbornly disagreed with his principal. He once or twice got his principal to reverse his decisions to dismiss some political appointees on claims made by some local political chieftains. He shares this closeness and courage in dealing with the Principal with other capable strikers like Peter Mbah, Dan Shere, Chinyeaka Ohaa, and others not necessarily fitted to be mentioned here.

He has since been this usual rovingdeal maker, investment media promoter,social conciliator and informal diplomat, amidst playing politics as it comes along.Nweke is perpetually in search of peace and friendly relations.

When the books are written, he would not miss the description,‘a sedate and serene surrogate of ChimarokeNnamani,’ busting with immeasurable capacity, loyalty and courage. On that account, it is correct to state that Nwekedeals, breathes and exudes Ebeano, without the oft claimed predilection to violence. He is not timid. More than once, this writer had heard Governor Nnamani growl, “Frank delivers…he is a smooth operator…he can go into any office in this land.” Nweke speaks the three major Nigeria languages, Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa, with the flourish of downtown happy-go-luckies. Born and raised in Maiduguri, schooled in Lagos and of Ishi-Ozala, Nkanu parentage, he blows the Nkanu-Igbo dialect with the taunts, gestures, jabs-and-stabs of playmates in the typical village square.

The third is Chijioke Edeoga, 61, native of EhaAmufu. He is the Labour Party candidate, and has been openly stated to be a cousin of the present governor, Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi. Ugwuanyi who appointed him as a double-Commissioner for two ministries: Local Government and Environment.

He started his political career in the old Enugu State government of Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo. By the time General Sani Abacha sacked all politicians, in 1993, he embarked on series of engagements and political forays, and soon headed for Lagos, where he joined yours truly and many other journalists in the Post Express newspapers, Apapa, Lagos. He was a Special Project Correspondent on the Special Projects Desk then headed by Mr. Chukwuemeka Gahia. This writer was then the Group Political Editor. Gahia, a seasoned journalist and fatherly personality later gave Edeogaa ‘privileged leave and cover’ as he returned to Enugu and successfully contested for the office of the Chairman, Isiuzo Local Government of Enugu State. In 1999, the Nwodos of Ukehe ensured a‘ packaging’ that landed him asthe Member representing Isiuzo/Enugu East Federal Constituency, in the House of Representatives. Unable to return to the HoR after 2003, he was now ‘packaged’ by Governor Nnamani to be elected the President General of Nkanu Peoples Assembly.

So, Edeoga is a redoubtable Ebeano man, despite efforts to distance self from the political organization.

He is also a formidable Gburugburu practitioner, being the only and first ever, two-tenure double-ministerial-Commissioner in the Gburugburuadministration. Strangely, though, the Ugwuanyiadministration is strongly criticized for failed performances in three major departments of Government: waste management services, local government services and public water services. Edeoga, his cousin, headed the first two under the Ministries of Environment and Local Government.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has refused to openly endorse the governorship candidate of Labour Party in Enugu State, Chijioke Edeoga, fearing that he would be booed over the glaring incompetences and abysmal failure of the candidate while he held juicy offices in the PDP for over 23 years.

Mr. Obi was in Enugu today for the burial former senatorial candidate of the party, Barr. Oyibo Chukwu, who was murdered by suspected unknown gunmen shortly before the February 25 general election.

Mr. Peter Obi who made it clear that he was in Enugu on a condolence visit to the family of the deceased, only said some of the candidates of the party from other states, including Enugu, joined him for the condolence visit and burial ceremony.

According to Peter Obi, Labour Party members may consider supporting the party, warning that only those with competence, capacity, character, compassion, track records and outstanding career outside politics should be voted for.

Earlier on, Obi’s supporters had trailed the presidential candidate to the venue of the condolence visit in order to protest against him should he consider endorsing Edeoga who is perceived to be incompetent and corrupt.

Peter Obi, however, deliberately refused to campaign for Edeoga or mention his name to the disappointment of the Labour Party’s supporters and the candidate.

Recall that Aisha Yusuf, a frontline Peter Obi’s supporter and other Obidients Movement members in the state had strongly disagreed with the presidential candidate, warning him not to endorse Edeoga over his failure in the Ministry of Environment, and his alleged criminal record while he was Commissioner for Local Government under Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.


The governorship election was recently moved from 11 to 18 March by the Independent National Electoral Commission citing BVAS reconfiguration and logistics problems.

The Ebeano political family in Enugu state claims that the family of Oyibo Chukwu, Labour Party’s senatorial candidate for the Enugu East who was fatally Killed on Wednesday, made a ridiculous and false complaint.

Professor Arthur Chukwu, the brother of the late senatorial candidate asserted that before his brother passed away, his late brother told a few people that he was being hunted by Ebeano political family members who wanted to assassinate him. Could it be from our in circles no?

In response to the assertion made by the professor, the zonal leader of the Ebeano political family, Chief Emmanuel Okwor, stated that the group consists of dependable, accountable men and women with a history of integrity throughout Nigeria.

Chief Emmanuel Okwor stated: “We are pained by the senseless Murders . We expect people to be rational. It’s unfair to accuse innocent persons of something they do not know anything about”.

He asserted that the Ebeano political dynasty had previously been resolute in its criticism of violent crimes and the backward Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) injunction to stay at home, both of which had a detrimental effect on the populace’s economic and social lives.

Chief Emmanuel Okwor, “It is unfair and uncharitable to accuse the Ebeano family of this heinous crime. As much as we do not want to join issues with the family, we strongly take exception to this accusation.

“We have challenged the security operatives not to leave any stone unturned in the quest to unravel the circumstances of Chukwu’s murder to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We are concerned about the deteriorating security situation and call on all citizens to cooperate with security agencies to get to the root of the matter. We do not expect reckless and unfounded accusations at this point”.

Chief Emmanuel Okwor stated that unidentified gunmen who wanted to impose the no-election agenda are believed to have organized and carried out the attacks on the election campaign convoys of several political parties, beginning with the PDP bus at Topland, the APC at Agbani, and the LP at Amechi Akwunanaw.

Ahead of the March 18, 2023 Governorship and National Assembly elections, former Governor of Enugu State, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani has embarked on ward to ward campaign in his Enugu East Senatorial District seeking the support of constituents to return to the Senate .

The Senator Nnamani ward to ward – Ebeano campaigns train went through major roads , streets , markets and neighborhoods structures in the Senatorial District canvassing for votes .

The campaign train distributed customized exercise books , T-shirts and face-caps to constituents along the roads, streets, markets and neighborhood structures in Enugu North, Enugu south, Isi Uzo, Nkanu East and Nkanu West local government areas.

They listed some projects attracted by Senator Nnamani to the constituency in the last four years to justify why they should vote for him in the forthcoming election in order to continue his quality representation and more dividends of democracy.

These includes but not limited to installation of all-in -one solar powered street lights in the Senatorial District; markets , parking lots, schools , hospitals , streets and roads in the local government areas .

They also listed the construction of 154- meter drainage line and development of rural access roads for farmers in the Senatorial District among others .

Senator Nnamani had also sponsored 3,991 female students in the Senatorial District for their West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) as well as entrepreneurship skills acquisition and empowerment of 100 unemployed women and youths with deep freezers and sewing machines .

Senator Nnamani has been an advocate of gender parity and women emancipation in the Senate . He believes that an educated and empowered female folks would be an advantage to the quest for development in the country.

He has been unrelenting in the battle to eliminate all forms of discrimination such as women right to inheritance, denial of access to education, under aged marriages and some harmful cultural practices like female genital mutilation against women .

Senator Nnamani promised to consolidate and attract more dividends of democracy to the constituency if elected again .

The PDP zonal chairman Nwafor noted the achievements of Nnamani from his days as governor to the present tenure in National Assembly and submitted that he is the best choice for them.

Enugu has come to a point where we don’t need leaders that will just dabble their way through for a whole eight years.

We need a leader who espouses a vision, which blueprint must be well laid out for us to see and interrogate. But as I write, Edeoga is yet to present any manifests, less than two weeks to the election. And even if he does so, there is no way the citizens can interrogate him.

His candidacy can be likened to someone, who is promising to build a mansion for Ndi Enugu, but has no building plan or architectural design.

Conversely, Dr. Peter Mbah of the PDP has not only marshalled out his vision of a new Enugu State in his detailed manifesto since October 2022, he has additionally gone round Enugu State to market his blueprint for a new Enugu in town hall meetings in the 68 development areas or centres.

He has made himself available during those engagements to be interrogated by community leaders, market women, youths, traditional institutions, women groups, and political leaders across the state on his manifesto.

He has had exclusive engagements with Enugu youth, women organisations, churches, professional bodies, the Chamber of Commerce, etc. to answer questions on his manifesto.

The midstream focuses on how pipelines convey water from source to storage. We understand that this needs sufficient power supply to function effectively.

Enugu State, he said, had the capacity “to produce 130,000 cubits of water and this would be enough for Ndi Enugu and we would aggressively bring in private sector investment to revive the water sector, by addressing the mechanical and electrical concerns.

“Our government if voted, he said would set up boreholes in the rural areas. The proximity between the boreholes and the houses of the residents will not exceed five minutes walk.”

Mbah said, that he shall industrialise Enugu State, attract investors and change it from being a public sector driven economy to private sector driven economy.

The campaign train distributed customized exercise books , T-shirts and face-caps to constituents along the roads, streets, markets and neighborhood structures in Enugu North, Enugu south, Isi Uzo, Nkanu East and Nkanu West local government areas.

They listed some projects attracted by Senator Nnamani to the constituency in the last four years to justify why they should vote for him in the forthcoming election in order to continue his quality representation and more dividends of democracy.

Enugu NPC releases salary, allowances for 2023 population, housing census ad hoc staff in Enugu State Nigeria. From Foxxymobile Nigeria.

The National Population Commission (NPC) has outlined the salary and allowances structure for its ad hoc staff who will be involved in the conduct of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.


The remuneration is divided into two categories – allowances and main salary.

In the category of allowances, according to the Director of Census Department, Mrs Evelyn Arinola Olanipekun, the NPC ad hoc staff will receive three types of allowances, namely; feeding allowance: (a) Specialised Workforce (SWF) – N2,000 per day x 13 days (three days of SWF and 10 days of state training). However, states that did not observe the first three days are exempted. Total N26,000. (b) State Facilitators: N2,000 per person, per day x 10 days. Total: N20,000

For the transport allowance it is N20,000 per person. Training allowance: (a) Trainer: N15,000 per day x 13 (SWF) and 10 (state facilitator) (b) Trainee: N10,000 per day x 13 (SWF) and 10 (state facilitator).


The commission said payment will be made twice for all categories, as follows: transport and feeding: N46,000 (SWF), N40,000 (state facilitators). Training allowance: trainer (SWF) – N195,000; trainee – N130,000; state trainers (facilitators) -N150, 000; trainees – 100,000.

It added that the above allowances would also apply to other categories such as enumerators and supervisors, but with a shorter number of training days and a slight reduction in the amount. On average, the total allowances for specialised workforce, facilitators, enumerators, supervisors, and other census functionaries range from N50,000 to N100,000.

NPC said that the main salary for NPC ad hoc staff will be paid after the completion of the census exercise. The average basic or main salary for each census functionary ranges from N50,000 to N250,000, depending on the position.

It summarised the salary and allowances for NPC ad hoc staff during the 2023 Population and Housing Census as follows: facilitators – N150,000 to N300,000; field coordinator – N140,000 to N280,000; quality assurance assistants/rovers – N130,000 to N280,000; supervisor – N130,000 to N230,000; enumerator – N100,000 to N220,000; monitoring and evaluation officer – N150,000 to N300,000.
