Foxychev, I heard that the amt of money required to register a business name differs from state to state? The agent told me that business name registration in Lagos and Abuja are more expensive compared to other states in Nigeria.

Is this true... If so, why?
CAC fees are the same every where in the country.

@ foxy

Thanks for your contribution.
I did an NGO registration, name reservation was approved and publications was done on national dailies. To my suprise CAC rejected the name at the point of issuing certificate.
I was told to bring another name and start the process all over again.

Can you suggest what could have caused the denial of the name.

Thank you.
There must have been a clause in the constitution that makes the reserved name inappropriate for the NGO. Your agent should know the real problem.

Jah bless today, thanks for sharing, how much is involve to register
Business names can be done for less than 20k. But for limited companies, you need a CAC accredited customer, which I am one. Prices vary, depending on share capital.

Name Availability search is the first step to take when you want to register your business with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), whether it is an enterprise, limited liability company (Ltd or Plc), or a non-profit organization like NGOs or churches.
First let me give you possible reasons why your proposed business name may be rejected at the CAC:
1. Names that are ambiguous or unclear, or confusing. Names that can confuse the public about the nature of your business, or awkward combination of words. E.g. Johnson Enterprises Company; or Johnson Motors and Health Ltd.
2. Use of reserved names like Johnson Chamber of Commerce, or John Department of Agriculture.
3. Use of names that are closely similar to that of existing registered companies with the CAC. For instance, you cannot use a name like "Dangots Sugar Ltd", because you know quite well that there is an existing company called "Dangote Sugar Plc". People can easily confuse those two names together.
Well, it is obvious we all know "Dangote Sugar", but there are thousands of registered companies we don't know about, and if we try to reserve a name close to theirs, it will be rejected by CAC.
Can we see the list of all registered companies in Nigeria before choosing our own name? Yes, but not practicable!
So what do we do?
Here are some tips to assist you in selecting a good business name that flies at the CAC Name Availability Search...
1. Be creative, very creative.
Some names are common and can be easily thought of. If you are thinking of using "Amazing Grace Nigeria Ltd", that is an easy name to come by! You can be certain that there will be existing companies having one or both words in their names. Think of unique words.
2. Explore other Languages.
For instance, if you are a fan of French or Spanish, or your native language, you can simply translate common words into them. You have a higher chance of getting your name reserved. For instance, you can translate "Red" into "Rouge" (French), or "Colorado" (Spanish).
3. Combine words that are rarely used together.
Everyone knows “Amazing Grace” are two words that are used together most of the time. “Abundant Grace” won’t be a good choice either. But if we say something like “Colossal Grace” we stand a better chance.
4. Combine more words (Don’t exceed 5 words!).
The reason for this is to reduce the chances of having closely similar words with the names of other companies. For instance, suppose we have “Johnson Nigeria Limited” already registered and we love the name Johnson so much that we don’t want to drop it or interpret it into another language. CAC may reject “Johnson Engineering Ltd”, or “Johnson Electrical Ltd”. But if we have two additional words different from those of the existing one, we can get ours approved. So if we choose “Johnson Engineering Services Ltd”, we will likely get an approval.
5. Specialize your business name
Let the nature of your business reflect in the name. E.g. adding suffixes like Engineering, Publishing, Health Services, Business Solutions, Farms, etc. will help you to distinguish your company name from others baring similar names but are into different natures of business, and consequently get an approval. Now, assuming “Johnson Nigeria Limited” and “Johnson Engineering Services Ltd” are registered, and we are into publishing, we can use “Johnson Publishing House Ltd”. It will likely get approved.
6. Google up your intended name.
Many businesses are creating online presence via corporate websites, blogs, online business directories, social media pages, etc. If you Google search your proposed name, you might come across an existing company with similar name. This will help you to fine tune yours further.
7. Be flexible, don’t be obsessed with a particular name.
I have seen people do like 5 name searches, and still don’t get an approved name. That is like 10 rejected names, since they have two options for each search! Being flexible will allow you to follow advices 1 to 6 above, thereby saving you money, energy and time expended on multiple searches.
Note that CAC has the right to approve or reject any name, based on their discretion. But a well thought of, unambiguous name will get you an approval.
Finally, seek advice from friends, family and professionals. Don’t be alone.
Contributions are welcome, please.

Registering a Business Name is very easy with CAC. You can do this yourself without any stress. Visit any of their state offices.
For Limited Companies, you need to go through an accredited CAC customer.

I realize many people are concerned about tax. Tax is only paid when your business has operated for at least a year. First year exemption applies in a lot of cases, especially for SMEs.
However, still call if you need to register your company with CAC:

Politics › Buhari To Visit USA At The End Of March by foxychev(op): 7:58am On Mar 10, 2016
Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to visit the United States of America for the third time since he was inaugurated as the president.
Buhari is to attend the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington DC at the end of March.
Nigeria is among countries and international organizations to confirmed to attend the summit as of March 8, 2016.
President Barak Obama will host the event between March 30 and April 1.
The president will reportedly be accompanied to the three-day event by three governors and six ministers.
The preliminary list prepared by the presidency showed that 11 principal officers and a 23-member Advance team will also be include in Buhari’s team.
President Buhari has recently returned from his one-week state tour to Middle East. He visited Saudi Arabia and Qatar for stabilization oil prices and for lesser Hajj in Medina.

Agriculture › Re: Poultry Farming, For Meat Or For Egg? by foxychev(m): 6:38pm On Mar 08, 2016
Both are equally profitable in the long term.
if you breed for meat you can turn over your capital four to five times a year, but it the con is you have to wait for a few months to make the money each time.
For eggs, you get daily income on sales, and a good stock will give you daily profits after you deduct money for the feed and other expenses.
But you need huge capital to start egg farming, the cages alone will amount to hundreds of thousands. NEVER breed layers without battery cages, they won't perform very well.
For broilers or cockerels, they do better on a wide floor range where they can move about.
To make your choice, think of the capital, layers need more start up capitals, though they give daily income (make sure your initial stock is not less than 16 weeks old, better if you get 20-22 weeks). Broilers need less start up capital, but you have to wait for them to grow, besides dealing with younglings require more attention and care.

Business › Re: Everything About Registering A Company In Nigeria: Step By Step Guide by foxychev(m):
I get a lot of calls on what is required to register a business with CAC. The truth is, it's very simple. One major thing are required:
1. Valid ID
Driver's license, international passport, national ID or permanent voters card.

Other things (not required in all cases) may include:
* Academic or Professional certificate
Only required if you want to register a specialized company that offers consultancy and expert services in certain fields (e.g. Audit, Engineering, Medical services, ICT). Certificate can be a university degree or HND, or professional certification.

* Passport photographs
Only required if you are registering a Business Name

* An address
You don't have to open a shop or get an office space in advance. Your residential apartment (rented or owned) will do.

Any other requirements apart from the above means you are intending to register a company that is beyond the ordinary.

Two types of registrations exist for a profit oriented business
1. Business Name
This is typically the sole proprietorship or partnership business types that we are all familiar with. Many professional consultants register this type; including chartered accountants and legal practitioners.
This is also the choice for starter low budget businesses; the certificate issued along with its documents can be used to obtain a corporate bank account, TAX Identification Number (TIN), and Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC).
Cummulative Cost of registering is typically below N20,000 if you go to CAC by yourself, which you can do without any agent or lawyer.

2. Limited Company
This is the preferred choice for you if you are ready for a full scale business. This carries more recognition in the Nigerian business environment. It needs at least two people to set up, and a third person to be the secretary (a CAC accredited agent ). It can be public PLC or private LTD. My focus here is the private company.
You need a CAC accredited agent here, that is the policy. Charges are always negotiable with the agent depending on the circumstances and other services but average is between N60,000 and N75,000.

It takes between two to five weeks to complete registration with CAC depending on the the state office and the readiness and accuracy of the required documents. you can visit www.benniesmasterpiece.net/index/company-incorporation for more info.

Call or text my line if you need more information or assistance. Am an accredited agent with CAC
