ETHNIC AFFILIATION AND RESOURCE CHALLENGES IN NIGERIA A STUDY OF IGBO ETITI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ENUGU STATE. Sources: www.projectng.com

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

It is a commonplace fact that Nigeria is a multi-ethnic nation state with socio-cultural differences between its component ethnic groups all of which have resulted into cultural dissimilarity (Okafor, 2007). This cultural dissimilarity has been manifested by, for instance, the differences in language, diet, dress and types of social system. Shrewd observers have noticed that the recent event such as globalization have not significantly diminished these differences. This static situation has been due to a number of reasons.

The indigenous languages, which help to identify the various ethnic groups, are still spoken by almost the entire population of Nigeria.

The style of life has not, for the majority people, changed to such a degree as to produce appreciably greater uniformity. Against this diverse background, many ethnic problems abound in Nigeria, which arise principally from the hostility that derives from competition between ethnically different peoples for wealth and power (Okafor, 2007).

The establishment of ethno-regionalism had a significant impact in Nigerian political arena. Theoretically, Edlyne (2002) contented that, even the formations of political parties, their manifestos, system of leadership and campaign strategies were originated from ethnic and geographical dimensions. An ethnic nationality refers to people who agree to share a common language, their cultural ideology and self identity.

While Okafor (2007) observed that since the beginning of democratic system of government during the first republic Nigerian political parties were forms into regional position supporting the three major ethnic groups the Hausa/Fulani, Igbo and Yoruba. In similar vein, the third republic of Nigerian democracy follows the same train. Furthermore, the model indicates clearly that Nigerians are more loyal to their ethnic background than their state.

The phenomenon of ethnicity becomes the most essential aspect of national identity in Nigerian politics, because people are more prone to their identity than being a Nigerian (Ogundiya, (2010). Gilley (2009) observed that, majority of Nigerians in their survey prepare to be label by their ethnic background. However, Nigerians tend to cluster more readily around the cultural solidarities of kinship, traditional entity than the class solidarities of the workplace. They also opined that what is more, “religious and ethnic identities are more fully formed, more holistic and more strongly felt than class identities” as evidenced in the fact that “whereas those who identify with religious and ethnic communities are almost universally proud of their group identities…those who see themselves as members of a social class are somewhat more equivocal about their pride”. Edlyne (2002) concludes that looking at the historical antecedent of Nigeria and the effect of colonialism the Read More..

THE EVALUATION OF THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT IN SOLVING HOUSING PROBLEM IN AWKA-SOUTH LGA OF ANAMBRA STATE sources: www.projectng.com
CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Social scientists are yet to agree on which of the three basic needs of non-shelter, food and clothing which one comes first.

What is beyond debate is the fact that it takes more efforts resources and planning to meet the house needs of every society. In urban centres, provision of recent and affordable accommodation has continued to test the competence of the administrators.

Sheltr has been Universally accepted as the second most important essential human need after food. Housing in all ramifications is more than mere shelter since it embraces all the social services and utilities that go to make a community or neighbourhood a livable environment. Infact, man has been in their need of this essential commodity for his well being even the primitive men could not do without the caves, which provided shelter to them. Indeed, housing is a veritable index of measuring the social economic and technological development of a nation, “show me the quality of your people’s house and I will tell what kind of nation you are” could aptly become a maxim.

The simple refuse affording privacy and protection against the elements is beyond the reach of most members of human race.

In attempt to lessen the housing burden on the populace, various governments in Nigeria at one time to other adopted housing programmes. The policies are directed toward the production and management of climatically, socially and economically suitable housing at an affordable price.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The research was carried out to know the role of government in solving housing problems in Anambra state.
The research opts for the Anambra state housing development corporation as a good case study to review the success of housing for all by the government.

Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) is made up of eight towns, namely Okpuno, Amawbia, Awka, Ezinato, Isiagu, Mbaukwu, Nibo, Nise and Umuawulu.

Awka is the capital of Anambra state and the seat of the government: it is accessible by road form all parts of eastem region states. Nise have notable infrastructure like Read More

Educational ServicesEcology Of Soil Biota And Its Roles In Biodegradation. by fproject(op): 10:51pm On Sep 19, 2017
ECOLOGY OF SOIL BIOTA AND ITS ROLES IN BIODEGRADATION. Source: www.projectng.com
ABSTRACT

The effect of the soil biota in ecosystem was carried out by extracting the soil biota from the soil using streaking and pour plate method. By inoculating the different soil samples collected from the school premises. The media used were saboraud and nutrient afar incoperated soil sample to make it selective for the soil organisms only. The culture was incubated at 370C for 48 hours for full growth to appear. Then the isolates were finally inoculated into dead organic matter prepared with soil, just to verify effect. The biota isolated was micro-biota and mesobiota. Among the microbiota the fungi and bacterial and the mesobiota are the protozoas. And fungi was found to have the highest percentage distribution of (63.3%), bacterial (20.9%), mesofauna (32.8%) and protozoa (17.5). This shows that fungi are the predominant soil-biota.

Key words: Biota, Mesobiota, mesofauna

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Soil biota consist of the micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, archaea and algae), soil animals (protozoa, nematodes, mites, springtails, insects, and earthworms) and plants, living all or part of their lives in or on the soil or pedosphere, Van (2007; 20). Millions of species of soil organisms exist but only a fraction of them have been cultured and identified. Microorganisms (Fungi, archaea, bacteria, algae and cyanobacteria) are members of the soil biota but are not members of soil fauna. The soil fauna is the collection of all the microscopic and macroscopic animals in a given soil. Soil animals can be conventionally grouped by size classes: macrofauna (enchytraeide, earthworms, macroarthropods),mesofauna (microarthropods, mites, and collmbolan), and microfauna (protozoa, nematodes). The size of a soil organism can restrict its location in the soil habitat, Comis, (2007; 10). Smaller members of the microfauna like nematodes are basically aquatic organisms that lives in the thin water films or capillary pores of aggregates preying or grazing on other aquatic microfauna such as amoeba. Soil protozoa are also land – adapted members of aquatic microfauna that can dwell in water films in field moist soils, Tate (2002; 10). Water films are created by adsorption of water to soil particles. Soil has a direct effect on the environmental conditions, habitat and nutrient sources available on the soil biota. The term pedosphere is often used interchangeably with soil and captures the concept that soil is a habitat where the integration of sphere occurs, Simeonson (2009; 150). These spheres include the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and the biosphere, Brady and Weil (2002; 50). Numerous biogeochemical processes regulated by soil biota occur in the Read More

ABSTRACT

This research work was systematically carried out especially to ferret out the roles of co-operatives societies in rural development a case study of Nsukka Local government area

In the first chapter, the research did the introduction by having overview of what co-operators should be in order to actualize their targeted goals and objectives. The chapter also highlights the following, the objectives, significance those who are likely to benefits from the study, there was a very good hypothesis tentative guess and definitions of important terminology used in the context.

Moreso, in chapter two, the writer reviewed related literature –various authorities who has written books presented seminar papers and other library materials.

Finally, the conclusion was properly conducted to find out the real hypothesis.
CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Co-operative societies as a form or type of business organization comes about when people with common, interest unit themselves into a group, financial and controlled by them for the purpose of achieving their goals. We believe from many others, that co-operative societies started in Nigeria in the early 20th Century. It should be noted that the life parterns of various communities in the country showed some traits of co-operative societies before the advent of modern co-operative societies. This is understandably so because most communities in Nigeria and Africa in general had ( and other still have) series of association youth association etc.

These organizations, communal farming through collective efforts, construction of rural roads extension of credit facilities to members etc, many of the modern co-operative societies have the above objectives.

According to Chief Obukada Achoja, from (MPC) Bulleting review (169:p.49) said that co-operative societies started Ethiopia last local government area of Delta state, which was created from Ethiopia local government area of Bendel state of them Midwestern Region of Nigeria, in 1968 with the formation of multipurpose co-operative societies (M.P.C.S.) The late emergence of co-operative societies in Ethiopia last and other parts of the mid west region was as a result of the administrative policy adopted by the former colonial masters. The policy was such that did not permit undue influence in the activities of the mid-west region.

The recent increase in the formation of new co-operative society in the country is a clear indication that many people and institutions alike have found co-operative societies of a useful tool in the furthering different interests. In the fourth National Development toward the growth and development of the co-operative sector in the country.

Towards this end government policy would be aimed at:-

i. Strengthening the movemnet in genral through assistance in cash and kind, particularly in the area of provision of storage facilities and shops.

ii. Increasing the number and membership of co-operative societies.

iii. Relying increasing on the societies for the distribution of essential consumer goods.

iv. Strengthening the manpower support services traditionally available to the co-operative societies.

(Federal Ministry of National Planning, 1981).

Samuel O Adeyeye – (1977,p.012) after a through study of co-operative movement in Nigeria recommended the establishment of co-operative societies in Nigeria in view of the economic benefits they could involve

Ihomoju (1988, p75) also claimed that the establishment of co-operative society could enhance the standard of living of the masses, contribute to the education of member and facilitate the marketing activities of farmers. Also, co-operative movement to be in the best position to stimulate food production through extension of credits to the co-operatives as well as the financing of large scale food production scheme in the rural areas. (S.O Adeyeye 1977 p. 4) Therefore there is the need to find out whether co-operative societies in Ethiopia last local government area are capable of fostering similar societies rural development.
