Its almost like being a Nigerian is already a minus one for those in this field. Lol ![]() |
tensazangetsu20:True talk |
tensazangetsu20:At least you proved one of my points, "Highest open source will do for you is get you an interview", just because I said open source matters doesn't mean one should ignore all the other important steps |
Open source matters too
|
tensazangetsu20:Actually, that's just one of the requirements, being good at the interview also matters too lol https://www.quora.com/I-come-from-a-third-world-country-where-software-developers-are-underpaid-and-theres-actually-no-serious-software-company-Im-a-pretty-serious-software-developer-What-should-I-do read this to understand my point |
Fr4nk:Sad part is, open source sucks to some 9ja devs because it ain't bringing profit (Disclaimer: using git as a VCS for your own projects doesn't really count as contributing to open source) |
ichidodo:I hope to either go into data science and/or AI/ML, because I feel like there's a lot of cool stuff that is yet to be made in this field, and especially by a Nigerian, even if I want a job I'm not going to aim for one Nigerian company that may or may not exist, I would like to work somewhere where such technologies are highly appreciated, Here's the crazy part: As a Nigerian hoping to work in a big tech company you have to really prove your worth by making meaningful contributions to open source, prove that you are worth that work visa, its much easier to focus on building your dream project when you are earning six figures in dollars and with a better standard of living. |

ichidodo:Fellow pythonista I understand your POV, 9ja devs are coding for a living, if all programmers in the world where Nigerian, then there probably won't be anything like Free and Open Source Software, I code for the passion and not really to survive, its cool when I get paid to do what I love though but its even cooler when your making your own unique ideas whether or not you get paid for it, Elon musk said a lot of people would rather settle for a boring job for the pay (paraphrased) instead of working on something exciting, its hard to imagine 9ja devs doing something cool at places like Tesla, SpaceX or neuralink when na only web development we dey practice. Mark Zuckerberg didn't create Facebook just because someone was going to pay him for it, he made his own idea a reality and ended up earning billions because he invested in his own idea. |
Rgade:Like I said, I no sabi web ![]() |
prior to now I was able to answer python questions from beginners on stackoverflow, it was cool and I mainly did it as a hobby, I started learning python since 2019 - 2020 (completely on my own, I was 15 then and everyone thought i was a jobless fool) though lack of consistency has always been a problem for me (I'm still stuck at intermediate level python, I can solve 89% of codewars kata that i attempt and I am pretty sure I can solve most beginner issues), I'll be more consistent from now on, before discovering this thread I was pretty lost at what I actually wanted to do with python, I was more like "learn the language first, figure out your specialization later", Now that I have a clear picture of data science and data analytics thanks to this thread and a few other articles I feel like this is what I really want to do. I have one question though, is starting young an extra advantage (I'm 17 now and I hope to have achieved python mastery before I turn 18, so I can invest more time in studying more computer theory, advanced math, DSA, and more Data Science, ML/AI related stuff), am i on the right path, or is there something I need to correct. |
Damn, I'm 3 years too late, this thread is awesome, but it's just too big to read all 126 pages ![]() |
Belkid01:I understand the lack of community but I don't understand the systems and structures part |
niel63:I'm not a pro in web but I thought it was main.js XD |
It's either person X is a full stack developer, frontend developer, or back end developer, using WXYZ stack all the time, why do I rarely come across people like person Z who is an IoT programmer, or person Y who just built a pothole detector with Open CV, Tensor flow etc, for a semi automated car prototype. I feel like if some people like me here in this country are going to be motivated to pursue tech careers other than Web development, we'll need Nigerians to inspire and motivate us, let us believe that we are not lying to ourselves when we dream of these careers and that it is absolutely possible for Nigerians like us to do well in these fields. |
Fr4nk:More targeted towards back end development (I guess that's why it's missing a few things) |
In case you're interested in learning / mastering python, I found this roadmap of "*questionable" accuracy * questionable in the sense that some things might be missing

LUAN:HTML is not a waste of time, as a matter of fact, HTML, CSS and JavaScript are the 3 main languages of the web (correct me if I'm wrong, I might be an idiot), you can't build anything for the web without those three languages (again, correct me if need be), even if you're going to use frameworks like django or flask (python), you must learn HTML, CSS and some basic JavaScript to build functioning web apps, you can't even get away with using Bootstrap without adequate HTML, CSS and JavaScript knowledge ![]() |
avalon7:Thanks for the advice, I have already decided that I'll focus mainly on mastering python and a few frameworks necessary for what I might want to do, I might not even need to learn c++ or java (unless I'm hit with a problem which would surpass the capabilities of python, which I'm guessing would rarely happen), I'm also planning on going deep into Data Structures and Algorithms and some other computer theory topics related to my "chosen" career, and I Google a lot, I'll definitely find more resources to help me on this journey (This forum is one of them :smiles ![]() |
Hi, I'm Franklin (17), I've been coding for a while now (like since 2019, or earlier) but I haven't really been consistent due to school work, I'm already very proficient in the language even if I haven't completely mastered it, I'm planning on re learning a few basic and intermediate concepts I must have forgotten, and learning advanced concepts from scratch, but recently I've been seeing a few articles online like "why you shouldn't start your coding career with Python " and others, I strongly refuse to believe that I have been wasting my time learn Python since all these years, to be honest I really love the language and I already consider myself to be a pythonista, I would like to focus on one or some of the following AI/ML, web app development (Data science, IoT, and Standalone software maybe later), I also wish to learn another language to compliment python in areas where it could be lacking (like performance speed for example), maybe I could get the best of both worlds, maybe I could choose between C++ and Java. I'm sorry for the very long writeup, I'm new here ![]() Here's a summary (TL; DR) Am I right for choosing to stick with python, and what should I choose as a secondary language from C++ and Java (I know I'll still need HTML, CSS, and JS for web) |
