I later reported it to the general manager after I discovered that the dude went about talking _shit with my name to other co-workers. I decided to rise above the whole drama and put in my resignation. |
The second time I lost my temper at work was some days back. It was on a Sunday morning, I was scheduled to work from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Work was going slow as was expected for a Sunday morning. One of the customary down-time conversations ensued. This time someone brought up a topic about flu (common cold). So this gay dude chips in, that these days the flu shots are becoming less effective because the mosquitoes have gotten bigger. I replied, telling him the size of mosquitoes have nothing to do with the effectiveness of flu shots. Next thing, he goes: "well, the mosquitoes have gotten bigger because of you immigrants" I sarcastically asked him "How, please explain" Being too shallow to understand sarcasm, this dude went ahead to say, (we) immigrants carry mosquito eggs in our luggage when coming into the USA, that that's the reason the flu shots are no longer effective. I swear, my jaw dropped in astonishment. I jejely told him mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water and that there's no way immigrants could enter the USA with mosquito eggs. I ended the "conversation" with: "you are so loud and ignorant, read a book" The dude started raining insults on me o. And hit me with "go back to your country you f*cking immigrant" I could feel the adrenaline rise, I could feel myself 2 seconds away from losing my temper, but I just smiled and walked away. |
Honestly guys, if I could update this thread every single day, I would. In all honesty, My life is not that interesting. Some of my days consist of working all day, barely grabbing stuff to eat, getting home and going straight to bed out of exhaustion. |
Bossman:Lol. I learnt my lesson that night. Experience is the best teacher ![]() |
janykute:Lol, but he has a point na. Read his post well. You go see say he make better sense lionlee216:Interesting |
guiddoti:Thanks bro. Ikengawo:Thanks sir |
Hmm |
bigtt76:I had a brief stint at fiverr. But I wasn't getting much gigs (jobs). |
I've contacted amazon via email, asking them to clarify the termination letter they sent to me. Hopefully, I would get an explanation. ===================================================================================== What's happening guys? I hear say nigerians cause wahala for twitter because of SARS? ![]() Abeg make una knack me gist. |
Okay, time don reach to go party, I now remembered the sad condition of my motor and how cold the weather is. Coupled with the fact that its a party, I couldn't dress my normal 5-sweatshirt way, so I wouldn't fall my hand na, as a fresh young man. ![]() I went and begged my elder sister for her car, she declined, I beg tire, she no gree (she was trying to get back at me for something I did earlier). I decided to go for the party like that, wearing normal clothes, jean, boots and winter jacket Bad decision I told the young lady to text me the address. She did, I put it on my waze app (for navigation), it told me 40 minutes to destination. "40 mins in this freezing weather?" I almost shunned the movement, but when I thought about the free nigerian food and drinks, plus the nice time I would miss out on, I strongheadedly decided to go. ![]() I had barely driven for 10 minutes when I started feeling my fingers go numb. One mind was telling me to go back, the other mind was confusing me with food I had to continually flex my fingers to keep up the circulation while alternating hands on the steering wheel. After what seemed like an eternity, I arrived at the party venue shivering like a leaf, I had to sit in the parking lot waiting for my car to gather some heat so I could warm myself up before getting into the hall. Driving back home was another case altogether. Im glad I made it home without dying from the cold. I had a nice time that evening though, but I wouldn't try this again ![]() |
So, sometime ago, I was driving my jalopy jejely, when I noticed my "check engine" light had come on on my dashboard. I was bewildered, befuddled, bamboozled and flabbergasted . Nevertheless, I booked an appointment with my mechanic. After like a week or two, I went to see him at the workshop (that's the day I met the Tesla on my instagram page)..So, he found out that my thermostat was misbehaving and advised me to buy new one and change it sharp sharp. I obliged, ordered it on ebay, it cost me like $24 for the thermostat itself and the gasket. free shipping though. I was managing the car like that, but the problem was that I couldn't get enough heat to warm up the car. The only time the thermostat would rise up a little and I would get some heat was when I stopped at a traffic light. Hmm. As a young black man, I was managing it like that. But what I would do each time is I would pad up my clothes, I would wear like 3 sweatshirts plus my thick winter jacket ![]() Remember that naija girl I said was responding to treatment, it turns out I was the one responding to treatment. ![]() One saturday afternoon, this girl texted me that she and her siblings would be going for a work colleague's pre-wedding party that evening and asked if I would like to join them. (those for obodo oyibo here know that african/nigerian party means free food and drinks) ![]() As onye nri wey I be, I said yes o! I forget say my motor no good. ![]() |
No be the job itself dey vex me, na the manner wey I take lose am dey pain me pass. Plus as an employee, you get a lot of benefits, including special stock offers. Nothing spoil sha, life goes on. |
So, I told you guys I was waiting on the results of the background check and drug tests. Everything came out fine, I got an email congratulating me on the success of the process. Got another one telling me where and when to come for orientation and my first day of job. The date was 6th of December, time: 6:30 pm. I had made up my mind on how I would alternate my time between BurgerKing, Amazon and the CNA jobs I applied for. I had made so much plans men. On the morning of the 6th, I don arrange my waka finish, arrange wetin I go wear. Went and had a fresh shave. My mum sent me to post some letters and documents for her at the post office, I gladly did it with a spring to my step. I got back home at around 2:45 pm and decided to lay down a little and close my eye to sleep. I woke up by some minutes past 7:00 pm. My siblings (who had come back from school and work respectively) did not wake me up. I went into overdrive. I just threw on any clothes I could grab, grabbed my car keys and ran out. They were asking me what happened, I no answer them. No matter how fast I drove, my map kept saying 34 minutes to destination. God knows I was hitting 90 - 100Mph, overtaking cars, changing lanes. I wasn't even thinking. I got there by some minutes to 8:00pm. I found the venue by around 8:06 pm (or thereabouts). It was when I got to the place I discovered that I forgot my wallet which contains my driver's license. I couldn't get into the warehouse as you need a photo id and key card to access the place. I finally caught the attention of someone wearing a yellow vest. She walked over to me, took my names, typed some stuff on her computer and said HR would contact me. On my way back home, I picked up the pizza I ordered earlier, it was supposed to be some sort of celebratory pizza congratulating me on the new job and also marking one year of our stay in the USA. I couldn't even eat it, it was a bitter-sweet day for me. I just got back from my BurgerKing work this evening, checked my mail and found termination letter sitting jejely for me in my email.. |
This life na pot of beans sha. I lost the amazon job |
This man has their time today ![]() |
jimikata:From my experience with burger king, you don't manually pay the income tax. They deduct it automatically before the cash is paid into your account. I think both state and federal collect their cut from your pay check but all the deductions are documented on your paystub (which is a document showing hrs you worked, how much you're paid per hour, estimated income per annum and tax deducted). |
guiddoti:Thanks for the heads up. |
Infamous:I've applied for two schools Chicago state university and Governor state university. If my movement get head, I could get back to school as early as January next year. After the long wait, my transcript is finally being evaluated. I'm just keeping a close eye on the situation. Thanks for asking. |
guiddoti:Done. Thanks |
The "interview" wasn't infact, an interview. It was a high volume hiring process. All they needed was for you to show up, give consent for them to run a background check and take a drug test. We had our picture taken, filled out some forms and picked the shifts. I picked 3 day, 12 hr shift, pay rate is $15.50/hr. The drug test consisted of us putting one cotton-like apparatus against the cheeks on the inside of our mouths which would absorb some saliva, after which you'd put it in a test tube, seal it, label and submit. The process lasted for like an hr. They said we should keep checking our emails in the following days, that we would be notified on their decision if/when the background and drug tests results come in clean. Fingers crossed. ![]()

How I overcame Homophobia Believe it or not, Nigeria(ns) are one of the most homophobic people on the planet, I was not an exception. I was most homophobic; not until I left Nigeria. Working at a fast paced job, where you meet different persons with different personalities, you would come across some weird stuff. You come across gay people, people with tattoos covering every inch of their skin, piercings on every part of their bodies (including tongue and _nipples ). I had not encountered any gay person up close and personal until one dude was employed at the store where I work. Being naturally observant, I noticed the boy was different. Being Nigerian, I noticed he is gay and thus, my nigerianness kicked in, I avoided him, I saw him as sub-human and I would cringe at the mere sight of him. I did not see anything wrong in what I was doing. Funny enough, there was also a bisexual lady working at the store at the same time and I was relating well with her ![]() On one occasion, during the normal "down-time" discussions (when work is slow), someone brought up the topic of sexuality, in my characteristic curiosity, I jokingly asked the girl why she's attracted to girls, she said she was led to lesbianism out of the urge to explore, that when she was little, her cousin would playfully start kissing and touching her, and they would trib and she would "get off" and feel happy. I threw the same question at the boy, I asked him why he likes guys, he said he was born that way, that right from when he was little, he had always loved girly things, he had always felt attracted to guys. . It was then it hit me, it was right there it dawned on me. I asked myself why I was hating this boy? Did he do anything to me? Did he commit any crime towards me? no be my prick or yansh he dey use. My hatred and animosity towards this boy was irrelevant, I could hate from now till next year and it wouldn't change anything. From then, I made a conscious decision not to hate on gay people. Highest, if I'm in public and I see a PDA between two guys (which is very common) and I feel disgusted or find it uncomfortable, the least I can do is look the other way or leave that vicinity. It's their business what two grownups decide to do with their genitals. Slowly, I started seeing the dude as a normal person, I started relating with the dude like everyone else in the store. Slowly, I'm unlearning my homophobia. https://yankeexperience./2017/11/21/how-i-overcame-homophobia/ |
