The problem with fuel subsidy is that the government does not control production cost.

As a result , oil prices can for example shoot up very high in the year, and the government may not have the money to pay for the difference between subsidised prices and production cost...so borrowing.

Also, when a subsidy is in place, consumption of fuel increases. As fuel is cheap, people go buy am well well, and let's not forget, mass smuggling...these increase subsidy costs, and since money is not always available to pay for subsidy costs...borrowing results.

Also budgeting for subsidy in year X is always a hit and go game...as rises in oil prices can mean that the budget for subsidy would shoot up beyond what is budgeted...meaning more borrowing

This has been happening for decades in Nigeria. If not for debt forgiveness in 2005, and partial removals over the year, our debt today would be ten times higher than it is now in part because of repeated borrowing to pay for subsidy

I haven't even mentioned the stealing and corruption implicit in the thing. Anytime there is free money, stealing go happen.

It even gets worse when oil prices fall...subsidy costs may reduce, but so also does revenue to pay for the subsidies. Also, since naira value is falling at the same time, the cost of subsidy in naira terms would go up as well, meaning government may have to ironically spend more to pay for subsidy...which means printing of naira and more borrowing.

Also, before the borrowing happens, monies are taken from other parts of the budget to pay for subsides, and when that cannot be sustained, borrowing ramps up to pay for the subsidy and to fill in the gaps left in the budget (Angola has a subsidy, but it has a lot of abandoned schools, hospitals and road projects because money that would have been spent on them was spent on subsidy...hence angola wants to remove subsidy before 2028 ends.)>

(There is a reason why I don't like tinubu...he knew the above, yet mobilized people against gej attempt to remove subsidy because he wanted to be called presidnet some day. The irony is that if he had supported gej on subsidy, Nigeria would have had more money saved to pay for a limited subsidy today)>

Also, NIgeria's debt is very high...the debt we have incurred plus interest, which means that we have to spend a large chunk of our revenue from oil on paying it back. Subsidy removal just reduced the percentage of revenue we used to pay off the debt, but it also means that not only is the money not enough, we have to borrow a lot for the normal budget

Bringing back subsidy right now would entail using money we borrowed to pay for it, or defaulting on our loans. That won't please our creditors...and as Argentina found out to its cost over ten years ago...displeasing the IMF is not a funny thing to do...those people can cut you off the world market and bring your economy to its knees , meaning you will end up begging them for mercy...on their terms.

From my observation, when it comes to development, the villages in the East are a bit developed with beautiful houses compared to the cities.

The issue is, there are no business activities in the villages, people mostly build the big houses and visit once in a while which is not contributing to the economy of the community

Eventually the young ones will need to go outside their community to make money and when old ones get too old, the community getting empty is inevitable

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has dismissed viral claims that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders became ill after attending the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

The ministry’s fact-checking unit labelled the claims misleading and warned social media users against what it described as malicious posts.

The BRICS Summit was held in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September under the theme Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.

The claims gained traction after Ramaphosa’s office confirmed that the South African president had been booked off from public engagementHe was advised by his doctors to rest and recover, although his office did not disclose the nature of his illness.

However, India’s MEA has rejected the suggestion that world leaders fell ill because of food served at the event.

The ministry’s fact-checking account on X directly addressed the claims, describing them as misleading and urging people to be cautious of unverified information circulating online.

Separate social media claims suggested that Xi had fainted or had left India early because of health concerns.

Those claims are also disputed by available information.

Xi attended the second session of the BRICS Summit alongside Cyril Ramaphosa and other leaders on 13 September, before completing his scheduled engagements.

There has been no verified evidence presented linking Xi’s health, or Ramaphosa’s subsequent medical leave, to food served at the summit.

The New Delhi meeting brought together leaders of the BRICS grouping as discussions focused on cooperation, economic development, resilience and other international issues.

LOL, i hate to do this, really, especially since I am no supporter of this government, but

1. Most of that money is probably in the federation account, being shared to states and FG
2. Most of the money is being used to pay salaries and exectue projects and do stuff like NELFUND.

Now, 10 billion is SCANTY. for a nation our size, which is why even though the above has been done, it is still not a success for the government

Salaries are being paid, yes, but they are not adequate, and need to be increased, which is what state governments are afraid of ....and which may lead to more borrowing when the day comes. NELFUND Is just a bandaid on a wound that needs massive surgery.

The real koko is that government is not making enough money by diversifying the economy

This guy is not serious. I sent over $50,000 per year to family and friends over the last several years( more than a decade) and still counting. $12,000 in 2 years is not even close to what I gave to my Brother alone as allowance per year.
