THE IMPACT OF TELEVISION VIEWING ON EDUCATION CHILDREN IN NIGERIA. A STUDY OF CHILDREN IN FUTURE HOPE PRIMARY SCHOOL OHAUKWU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA source: www.projectng.com
CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND Of THE STUDY

Communication to a great extent Is very important in the existence of man. Every thing that man do to survive in life requires communication.

This idea has lead to the development of various devices to enhance communication and information flow in the world, which television was one of them. Its viewing also became necessary as the events occurring in the society were been televised through the television set. Television viewing is the exposure of Individuals to the programmes of television in order to be aware of the things happening in the society for information improvement.

Adult and children are involved In television viewing but the people that formed the basis of discussion In this study are the children.

The global history of television shows that this mass

medium came Into existence in the 1920s, though its beginnings were discernible in the nineteenth century.

As Amafili (1993:18), points out, television developed from the combination of firm and radio.

The development of modern television began with the invention of the iconoscope and kinescope. These devices were the basis for television transmission and reception respectively, and were invented in 1923 by a Russian immigrant in the United states of American, named Vladimir Zworykin.

The iconoscope tube used electrons to detect and transmit pictures instantly, its invention transformed television into an electric medium. Before this time, television technology depend mechanical reproduction of visual images.

In Nigeria unlike radio, television broadcasting started from the regional rather than the federal government.

This was as result of the urge by the various regions to develop television as much emphasis was laid on the central development of the medium.

This scenario was in line with the political realities of that era. As Okenwa (1993: 55) argues, the polities of Nigeria before independence place more emphasis on the development of the region more than the centre. The first television station was established in 1959. This was followed by the Eastern Nigeria television (ENlV) which came into existence in 1960 and the radio television kaduna (RTK) established In 1962 as an arm of the broadcasting cooperation of Northern Nigeria. Another television station that started in 1962 was NBC-TV known as Nigeria broadcasting services channels 10.

It started broadcasting in a small wooden studio until 1963 when its permanent television house with studio and offices was opened in 1975.

It acquired Its own colour equipment and was sending out signals to the delight of its viewers.

Through govemment Initiatives in 1977 the Nigerian television Authority was created to handle television broadcasting in the country. It was given exclusive right over television broadcasting in Nigeria. Later the 1979, constitution broke the monopoly so that states which wish to operate television stations could do so. This right of ownership was later extended to private indiViduals, resulting in the granting of licenses to private individuals and organizations by the general Ibrahim Babangida Military government in 1993. As is the case with radio broadcasting, this development revolutionalised television broadcasting in modern Nigeria.

In considering the advantages of television, It has the power of combining sound with vision qualities to make "one of the most powerful communication forces In the history of civilization" (sandman et al; 1976).

Amafili (1993: 18), is correct when he says that most striking characteristics of television is the speed with which it disseminates information.

Television messages came in the form of programmes.

Among the programmes are news, musical variety show, entertainment, dramatic programmes, comedy shows Read More

THE CONSTRUCTION AND FABRICATION OF A CANDLE MOULDING MACHINE. SOURCES: www.projectng.com
CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

In every developing nation like ours, it is supremely pertinent to acquaint ourselves with fabrication of machines and components. The clamour for indigenous technology should not be a lip service but should be pragmatic, so that our abundant local raw materials can be affectively utilized.

One area effort has been made is in the fabrication of candle moulding machine. Candle is one of the domestic items which all and sundry is cognizance of the indispensable role it plays in our various homes. We should not depend on the importation of such vital domestic item –candle.

However, there are already exiting machines for moulding of max into candle. Most of them are complicated in their design and their operation require the knowledge of skilled men and personnel to supervise the operation. Not only this, the cost of importing them here is not a taken, consequently, a candle moulding machine which does the same function of converting max into candle stick has been developed.

The candle mould is not costly, not complicated in design and does not require the knowledge of skilled men for its operation. It is manually operated and can be used in our college industries but owning to the limited number of mould cavities it is more advantageous in our home to produce candlestick when the need arises.

This project, aims at giving solutions to the problems encountered in the previous related project at most economic level. In our material selection we put into consideration of various materials that can be used to produce the fabrication and with which the machine can function satisfactorily at maximum level of safety.

1.1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION OF CANDLE MOULDING MACHINE

The candle moulding machine shares the same principle as the giant ones produced before it. Likes the gaint ones, it works on the principle of casting. Candle making can be described as the casting of wax into stick form. The molten wax is poured into the mould cavity and is allowed to solidify.

The machine has a moulding box (made of aluminum) having 15 cavities with each cavity making 15mm diameter and mm length approximately.

There is adjustable screw which move the mould in horizontal axis and also open and closes as each cast. Due to its opening system the solidification Read More

Over the century, man has been able to achieve many fear is the ability to like the whole world together invisible thread called Communication. Without communication, we utterly be isolated groups without the coordination we have today. THE PROBLEMS OF YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT AND RURAL CRIME IN NGOR OKPALA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF IMO STATE sources: www.projectng.com

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE PROBLEM

The problem of youth unemployment and rural crime has over the years become an Area of interest and great concern to most nations of the world. It is the intention of this nations to completely eliminate or at least minimize youth unemployment and rural crime in their various nations.

The menace of youth unemployment in Nigeria could be said to a recent occurrence because in the pre-colonial days great value and dignity was attached to labour as a means of acquiring wealth but now the end justifies the means. Even if unemployment existed it was not the intractable problem it is today.

According to Balogun (2010:82), he opined that of Nigerian’s 150 million population 40 million are unemployed. As 45% of the population is between the ages of 15 to 40 years this means unemployment mainly affect the youth. The Nigeria ruling class is incapable of solving this problem, only the working class can take on the task of eradicating youth unemployment and rural crime

Balogun (2010), argued that it is estimated that over 3 trillion naira has been spent since 2003 just to combat youth unemployment and rural crime. The question is where has this money gone and why does the menace still persist to solve the problem, the government buy a few thousand pepper grinding machines or five thousand bikes and distributes these to hungry youths numbering millions. These methods gives rise to massive corruption and provide room for political patronage. This methods also has been used for close to 10 years now and what has it been able to achieve or deliver?

With the extent of human and national resources Nigeria possesses, she ought not to know any poverty, let alone this extent of youth unemployment and rural crime.

According to Chigunta (2002:89) these large-scale unemployment among youths is encouraging the development of street youths in Nigeria. the street youths, denied of legitimate means of livelihood, grow up in a culture that encourages criminal behavior in rural and urban areas where they engages in various activities such as petty trading, casual work, stealing, pick pocketing prostitution, touting and other illegal activities.

Ngor Okpala is a local government area of Imo state Nigeria, its head quarters are in the town of Umuneke Ngor. It has an area of 56Ikm and a population of 159,932 at the 2006 census. Ngor-Okpala is a notable place in Imo state because of her locational position. Ngor Okpala is the largest local government in Imo state and one of the largest in Nigeria.

Ngor is the fastest developing local government in Imo state. Ngor Okpala is blessed with natural mineral resources which has not been tapped. This prominent status of Ngor Okpala as a state local government Areas and its consequent of population explosion and the problems of youth unemployment and rural crime makes it unique for this study.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Youth unemployment and rural crime has been a threatening menace in Ngor Okpala as a whole, thus it has became necessary to give full attention as regards how to curb this ugly trend. With over 40 million Nigeria youth effectively unemployed in a population of 150 million, no doubt Nigeria has one of the highest youth unemployment in the figure of the world despite her economic potential. This situation clearly reveals its social essence when we consider it against the fact that Nigeria has 45% of her population between the ages of 15-45 years and due to the extremely low life expectancy of 45 years.

However, Nigerian youth are the hardest hit by this menace of employment. With this figures in mind, it does not need the wisdom of Solomon to clearly understand why there is so much crime, spates of kidnapping, youth unrest and most significantly an extremely unstable social economic structure that has hitherto been bedeviling Nigeria with particular reference to Ngor Okpala.

It is one of the major social problems facing all societies in Ngor Okpala. It creates and perpetuates poverty and frustration and even aids uneven distribution of national wealth.

Moreso, it also contributes to low productivity and lack of economic growth it gradually contribute to increase in the level of crime and other anti-social behaviour in the communities and societies especially in Ngor Okpala local government of Imo State. As a result of unemployment the youth went into different rural crimes like robbing cars on roads leading to different villages in the local government.

Nevertheless, in my community Umuhu in Ngor Okpala local government there are recent cases of unemployed youths who engage in crimes like drug abuse and intake of marijuana, and this motivates them to unleash havoc on innocent villagers . Also, they go ahead to steal domestic animals and disrupt rural market in disguised theft. There are also reported cases of these individuals raping young innocent girls and also committing incest taboo and other abominable acts.

Consequently, the above is against the culture of the people of Umuhu community and Ngor Okpala local government of Imo State. This menace known as youth unemployment and rural crime is potentially dangerous as Read More...

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Marketing operates within a dynamic environment and today’s companies are wreathing with customer values and orientations; economic stagnation, environmental decline, increased global competition, and a host of other economic political, social and pricing challenges which if Ignored will be detrimental to the company. Marketing is concerned with getting the right product to the right customer at the right price.

Price for a product is one of the factors that determine the demand for the product, that is why economic theory states that price is determined by the interaction of demand and supply cost and price usually affect demand and these three are in continuous inter play. For economist, it is a key factor describing the level and movement of demand. The basic assumption made about demand is that all things being equal, price plays a decisive role in determination of the rate of purchase by the consumers. Price presents a thorny but interesting phenomenon under our current economic system.

Traditionally, price occupies the second position of the internal or important variables of the marketing mix otherwise known as 4ps.

Product, price and promotion, place pricing decision aspect of a firms marketing programme arises partly from the fact that of all the elements of the marketing mix, price is the only one that generates income and revenue while the next represent lost to the firm (Adirika, Ebue and Nwachukwu 1996:59). Price is also one of the flexible elements of other elements of the marketing mix unlike, product features and channel commitment, price can be changed quickly and if price is well blended with way in achieving better result. Price is a very sensitive issues facing a company of which a company cannot do without because of that, it can make or mar a company’s image. Price communicates to the market the company’s interview value/positioning of its products/services.

No company will want to incur loss through the sales of its products. Inspite of this firms want to achieve certain level of customer satisfaction translated in price terms, that is why both manufacturers and marketers use price to accomplish multiple objectives price may be use as a clue to product quality while conveying to the customers that a seller has high quality goods and services. Price wears many hats, stated by (Mark 1979) of the authors in pricing strategies and this emphasizes the crucial role of pricing in the survival of a company. At the same time price are pricing competition is the number one problem facing many marketing executives. Yet, many companies do not handle pricing well. The most common mistake are: pricing that is too cost oriented; prices that are not revised often enough to take the rest of the marketing mix into account; prices that are various enough for different products, market segment and purchase occasions.
