Barack Obama on Wednesday notified US Congress that he intends to deploy 300 troops to Cameroon to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations. In a letter released by the White House, the president said 90 personnel had already been deployed, and would be armed for self-defense. A senior administration official told AFP the deployment was “part of the counter Boko Haram effort”. Cameroon, along with a growing number of west and central African nations, has been targeted by the Islamist militants, who are expanding operations beyond the group’s traditional base in northern Nigeria. Twin suicide blasts on Sunday killed at least nine people and injured 29 in far northern Cameroon. Two female suicide bombers carried out the attacks in the village of Kangaleri, security and local sources said. Nine people died when the first woman detonated a bomb in a tiny milk and donut restaurant. The second suicide bomber killed only herself, a local authority official said. The attack came a day after triple explosions in Chad left 41 dead. Kingmakers in Ile-Ife have asked the Giesi Ruling House to present qualified candidate(s) from the family to be selected the next Ooni of Ife. The Obalufe of Ife, Oba Solomon Omisakin, who read the address of the 16 traditional rulers of Ife at a press conference held at Ile Oodua, said the kingmakers used the 1980 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration to arrive at the decision to ask Giesi to produce the next Ooni. Omisakin stated that the new Ooni would emerge within the next 40 days. He said, ” We the 16 traditional rulers making up kingmakers by Ife traditional rules and customs hereby unanimously declare and affirm and confirm that 1980 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration is the one in existence now and we affirm as follows: “Section 19 subsection a (3) that it is the turn of the Giesi Ruling House to present a candidate/ candidates for the vacant stool of the Ooni of Ife Chieftaincy. The Sultanate Council has declared Tuesday, Sept. 15 as the first day of the Muslim month of Dhul-Hajj. This is contained in a statement issued by the Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI) Secretary General, Dr Khalid Aliyu, in Kaduna. Lagos-based senior lawyer, Femi Falana, has said he never suggested that immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, fought corruption in a more civilised manner than President Muhammadu Buhari as it is being claimed in some reports. He said at no time during during his recent interview on Channels Television did he make such a suggestion. In a statement on Wednesday, Mr. Falana said the false claim is being spread by misguided fellows desperately seeking to “discredit the anti-corruption programme of the Muhammadu Buhari administration” He explained that although he said during the interview that the Jonathan administration recovered $970 million from the Abacha loot and sacked three of his ministers, he did not say those actions were “taken quietly as they were announced and celebrated in the media”. He continued, “I was alleged to have “suggested” in an interview in the channels television, that President Jonathan fought corruption in a more civilised manner than President Buhari. I never made such a stupid statement. Hence, the “suggestion” ascribed to me is grossly misleading and downright dishonest. “In accusing the influential members of the National Peace Committee of gargantuan hypocrisy I did say that their chairman, General Abbdulsami Abubakar even probed the dead and recovered properties and over $1 billion from the Abacha loot which are contained in the Forfeiture Decree No 45 of 1999. “I questioned the motive of the members of the National Peace Committee in calling for “soft landing” for corrupt people. There is a crack within the Giesi Ruling House over the jostle by princes from the family to succeed the late Ooni of Ife Oba Okunade Sijuwade. The Adesogba family, an arm of Giesi Ruling House, said in a statement on Thursday that it had endorsed the founder of Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Prince Ramon Adedoyin, as it’s sole candidate for the race. The statement, jointly signed by eight princes and two princesses on behalf of the family, said Adedoyin, who hails from the Agbedegbede lineage of the dynasty was eminently qualified to succeed Oba Sijuwade by virtue of his immeasurable contributions towards the development of the town. The signatories to the statement are: Princess Kehinde Sijuwade Elugbaju (Nee Adewole); Princess Adekanmi Adelugba; Princeess Olufunmilayo Busayo; Princess Adedokun Adedoyin; Prince Gabriel Adedire Adewole. Others include: Prince Adebolu Adewole; Prince Adekola Adewole; Prince Adekunmi Adewole and Prince Tilewa Bimbo Adewole. “Dr” Williams Babatunde Fowler, who was on Thursday appointed to head Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) by President Muhammad Buhari, holds a dubious honorary doctorate degree in England from an institution known as the “Irish International University.” The fake institution was exposed as a degree mill by the BBC in 2008 as offering bogus and useless honorary degrees. In announcing Mr. Fowler’s appointment, presidential spokesman Femi Adesina claimed that Mr. Folwer “had his higher education in the United States where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin and a Master of Business Administration degree from the California State University.” He also stated that Fowler holds an “Honorary Doctorate Degree of the Irish International University”. That listing of Mr. Fowler’s academic degrees immediately began to provoke close enquiry. A United States-based university professor, Farooq Kperogi, writing on Facebook, said, “After months of delays, ostensibly to properly vet his appointees, President Buhari just appointed somebody that may turn out to be a total fraud. He appointed a certain "Dr." William Babatunde Fowler as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). In a news release signed by Femi Adesina, this red flag appears on the man's qualifications: "Fowler, who holds an Honorary Doctorate Degree [sic] of the Irish International University, is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria and the Business Management Association of the United Kingdom." Well, Irish International University is a fraudulent, non-existent university (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/7175730.stm). “Second, the Committee of Vice Chancellors in Nigeria has ruled that people with even legitimate honorary doctorates cannot prefix "Dr." to their names, as is the practice globally (see http://www.farooqkperogi.com/.../finally-some-good-news...). I fear that if this Fowler's other qualifications are looked into, a big scandal may break out. His bachelor's degree, for instance, is said to be from the "University of Wisconsin" and his master's degree from "California State University." According to Kperogi, “The trouble is, University of Wisconsin and California State University are multiple-campus universities; you can't just say you attended the University of Wisconsin without mentioning the location. The University of Wisconsin has 26 campuses, and California State University has 23 campuses. Something is fishy here!” However, Wikipedia has a more detailed listing of Mr. Fowler’s lower degrees which appears to grant credibility to them, stating that he “obtained his first bachelors’ degree with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a minor in Political Science in 1978.” It adds that he completed a second bachelors’ degree program at California State University, Los Angeles and also a Master of Business Administration degree program at California State University, Dominguez Hills in 1981.” Despite all that, Wikipedia does not list Fowler’s “Honorary Doctorate Degree” from the Irish International University in its citation. A cursory look at the Irish International University shows that it is a fake “university” operated by a United Kingdom aristocrat, Professor Baron Knowth, who serves as the Honorary Chancellor of the Irish International University. Despite being exposed by the BBC as a fake university offering bogus and useless honorary degrees, Irish International University has continued to do business. Several Nigerian politicians, led by former Lagos state governor and now National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, received honorary degrees from it early in 2008. In addition to Tinubu, broadcaster Bisi Olatilo, BEN TV UK owner, Alistair Soyode, Timi Alaibe, now Oba of Ugbo, Fredrick Akinrutan, Senator Grace Bent and a scion of the Ooni of Ife, all received a fake honorary degree in an event orchestrated by the fake university in London. Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State, says his administration has cut down overhead costs by 60 per cent as part of measures to rescue the state from its precarious financial situation. El-Rufa’i, in a broadcast to the people of the state on Wednesday night, said that the state was broke and had a debt burden of more than N74.297 billion, comprising N28.840 billion domestic and N45.44 billion foreign debts. He said that the administration had also taken radical steps to reduce costs of governance, shore up its internal revenue and block all revenue leakages. “It was obvious that running Kaduna the old way is a recipe for disaster. “One of the steps we took was to cut overheads spending by 60 per cent. I therefore directed the state accountant general to release only 40 per cent of budgeted overheads as we strive to improve liquidity and prioritise spending for public goods. “However, our efforts in this regard are not on the expenditure side alone. As we cut costs, plug leakages and reduce wastes, we need to grow our revenues and have more realistic budgeting in the state. “We are therefore focusing on strategies to rapidly increase our internally generated revenue.” The governor said that the reduction of ministries from 19 to 13 and the 50 per cent salary cut for himself and the deputy governor were also targeted at reducing the cost of governance. He emphasised that the administration would no longer spend money on gifts, feeding and pilgrimages. “In 2014, over 2,000 pilgrims were sponsored to the Hajj by the Kaduna State Government and the 23 local government areas. Out of the 810 Christian pilgrims, 800 were sponsored by the same governments. “All these cost the governments nearly N1.5 billion in just one year. Our state simply cannot afford this expense any longer.” El-Rufa’i said that N120 million was saved from salaries paid to ghost workers after the biometric verification of civil servants conducted by the administration, adding that those involved in the fraud would be prosecuted. The governor said, henceforth, the administration would adopt the zero-based budgeting system. “This means that every expenditure item will have to be justified both in terms of its necessity, cost and availability of funds vis-à-vis other competing needs before it can be included in the state budget. “There is no reason to legislate N200 billion as annual budget when the realistic revenue and expenditure capacity is less than N100 billion.” On tax reforms, El-Rufa’i said that the government was studying all options to improve its internally generated revenue and reduce dependence on federal allocations. Controversy is trailing the death of 26 year old Benson Obode who was said to have been arrested in Benin City on May 21, 2015, by policemen who claimed that they are from Lagos Police Command. The policemen, who had accused Benson of buying a stolen vehicle, arrested and took him to an undisclosed cell in Benin. His family and lawyer were never allowed to see him. They alleged that they were initially told that he was taken to Abuja and later Lagos, only to be informed last week that their son died in custody. At press time, no formal information had been given to the family by the police authorities. As a matter of fact, it took a local radio crew that travelled to Lagos and Abuja on several occasions before the police in Lagos said that Benson allegedly died from 'mob attack'. Family members, friends and associates yesterday, protested the killing of Benson whose corpse was deposited at the mortuary in Benin by one Corporal Oniyon Musa ,same day he was arrested. The protesters stormed the premises of the Edo State House of Assembly, Edo Government House and headquaters of Edo Police Command, demanding for an independent autopsy to ascertain the actual cause of Benson's death. His elder brother, Solomon, said the police were yet to inform the family what happened to Benson since he was arrested. He added that N200,000 cash, phones and ATM cards belonging to his late brother were still missing. When the Edo State Police Commisioner, Samuel Adegbonyi was contacted, he said he was on leave. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied the allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Lawal Daura, is a card-carrying member of the APC. APC claimed that the accusation is absurd and frivolous. In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party challenged the PDP to publish any evidence it may have to confirm the allegation. “After all, it is trite that he who alleges must prove. In the absence of that, the PDP must call another press conference to publicly apologize to all Nigerians for engaging in barefaced lies,” it said. The party expressed shock that the PDP has started exhibiting all the ‘symptoms of hallucination so soon after its gravy train derailed, saying it’s obvious that the party has now started hearing voices’. “We know that the psyche of the PDP has been badly affected by its loss of power at the centre. I had a similar experience some years ago. I was staying with my younger sister in a 3 bedroom apartment. One day my sister informed me that there was a woman in her church who had 2 children, but her husband travelled abroad, and she was planning to join her husband with the kids, but there were visa troubles. Now, her landlord sent her packing and her husband had not sent money to secure another apartment. My sister asked if she vould accommodate for 2 weeks until she sorted herself out and I said no problem. 2 weeks turned yo 1 month, 2 months, 6months and the woman refused to leave. Of course I was providing food and everything else for her and the 2 kids during this period. I had to take drastic action and gave my sister an ultimatum. I also called the woman to tell her I could no longer accommodate her, giving her 2 weeks to make alternative arrangements. When they realised I was not joking she eventually went to rent an apartment for herself within a week. Op you must be firm. Dont allow sentiments to ruin your relationship with your fiancee unless you have other undisclosed intentions. 4 Likes |

The twin bomb blasts in Damaturu, Yobe state this morning happened at the praying ground, where Muslim worshippers had gathered for the Eid-el-Fitri prayers. The Commandant General (CG) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) Dr. Ade Abolurin will bow out today as his two-term tenure ends. President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to name Abolurin’s successor. Abolurin is the pioneer CG of the corps from 2005. However, there had been reports in recent weeks suggesting that retired generals and Inspector-General were jostling for the position. Deputy spokesman of NSCDC, Shola Odumosu told Daily Trust that he was not certain if a new boss will be announced soon and dismissed a plan that Abulorin was pushing to remain in office. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday intercepted the sum of $2,198,900 from a man in Lagos. The money was seized by anti-narcotic officials on the grounds of suspected money laundering at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos. One 46-year-old Ibiteye John Bamidele is being investigated in connection with the case. The suspect was apprehended on his way to Abuja. Preliminary investigation conducted by the Assets and Financial Investigation Directorate of the NDLEA revealed that Bamidele’s action contravenes the money laundering prohibition act 2011 as amended. He told the NDLEA officials that the money belongs to one Martins Olufemi Thomas, a medical practitioner in Lagos. Investigation conducted by the agency did not link the money to proceeds of narcotics. However, a country having a challenge of insurgency cannot afford to ignore suspicious movement of large amount of money. Consequently, the Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, has directed that the suspect and the exhibit be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further action. Giade said, “The outcome of preliminary investigation did not link the money to proceeds of narcotics.
