*Hold INEC Accountable for Standard of Elections to Improve in Nigeria* Saturday, February 23, 2019 *Awka, Nigeria:* Today, I performed my civic duty as a citizen of Federal Republic of Nigeria by casting my votes to elect the president of Nigeria, and 2 federal lawmakers (federal senator and federal house of representatives). I voted at Awuda, Nnobi in Idemili South local government area, Anambra State, Nigeria. With this, I accomplished one mission for which I traveled from my base in New York City, United States to Nigeria this time. This is the first time I voted in Nigeria in a very long time. The last time was 1979 election which produced President Shehu Shagari, Governor Jim Nwobodo and others. The question now is how was this election process, how do I see it? I can only speak about my empirical observations. I can only speak about what I saw. I don't know what is happening in other polling stations. But if what I observed is what happened in polling stations across Nigeria, then I will say that INEC have done a very poor job when it has no reason to. *Experience at the Polling Stations* I got to polling station at Awuda Hall at 8.56 am. INEC officials just arrived, and were seen arranging to start attending to voters. There were 2 long lines of voters ready and eager to vote. Paper Lists of voters in the polling station were pasted with glue on the wall. I notice the paper lists kept falling down on the floor because the glue were weak. Seeing the frustration on INEC workers' faces, I asked them why can't they try using tape instead of glue. They said they don't have tape. Unknown whether INEC bought tapes and the workers forgot to bring them along to the polling station. I could not find my name on the lists. One of the election workers directed me to another polling station at Nnobi Girls Comprehensive Secondary School. On getting there at 9.32 am, INEC officials just arrived. I noticed some people who came there to vote leaving in disappointment that voting had not started. I inquired if that was actually the right polling station for me. I found out it was not the polling station for me. I was directed to go to St. Mary Catholic Church. On getting to St. Mary Catholic Church at 9.58 am, there were 2 long lines. Polling booth 011 was mine and voting has started. The other line was not so lucky. A young man eager to vote raised his voice asking a lady on Youth Corper uniform when will voting start because he has something to do, so he wants to vote and leave. The Youth Corper was equally loud responding that they are waiting for someone to arrive. She added that she has no control. The man and some other voters on that line got so frustrated that he called for the attention of policeman on duty. The anti-riot policeman went over there calmed them down. I was relieved. A young man came to my line and told us on low tone to vote for a particular candidate. A fellow on the line cautioned him that campaigning at the polling station is illegal. When it was my turn, I showed my PVC, the scanner machine could not read my fingerprints, but the lady on the register verified my name. My nail was marked with ink, I was given 3 ballot papers: one for President, one for Senate and the other for House of Representatives. I went to the booth, thumbprinted on the part of my choice candidates, folded the papaer as instructed, dropped them in respective ballot boxes and I left the polling station. *Conversation with Taxi Driver* I boarded a local transport (Keke) and left. I engaged the driver in conversation. He stated that people started trooping to the polling stations very early, very eager to vote, but because INEC officials arrived late, many people had left. He added that given that closing will end at 2.00pm, he fear that not everyone will be able to vote. That got me very upset. The facts and thoughts that people will be disenfranchised because INEC failed to arrive on time INEC scheduled, and upon arriving late and will close early, and people will be denied vote because of that is absolutely totally unacceptable. *Way Forward: Probe INEC and Hold Leadership Accountable* Let me first of all address some people who will say I'm using "US standard to judge Nigerian standard". That will be excuses of people who wish to perpetually defend mediocrity and lackluster performance, people who will want Nigeria to remain in this messy hole forever. People who will not see anything wrong with INEC collecting humongous amount of money in pretence to deliver top class services, promising to deliver class 'A' services, but instead delivering woefully sub-standard shoddy jobs, and find tens of reasons to justify their incompetence and perhaps criminality. Failure to conduct smooth, free and fair elections from beginning to end after collecting huge sum of money requested for, is nothing but fraudulent act and election fraud. It should be crime (either common or special crimes) to do this. Any clumsiness by an election body like INEC which cause people not to vote is overt, covert and subliminal vote suppression, vote denial, vote refusal, fraud and should be crimes to do these things. If Nigerians and the world don't hold election body like INEC responsible and accountable, it will continue to give lousy services while collecting huge sum of money from the treasury. The fact that INEC will collect such a huge amount of money running into hundreds of billions of Naira to enable it conduct standard job, only to be arriving late, and arriving unprepared and thereby cause people not to vote eventually, is sufficient to probe INEC leadership for incompetence, for voter frustration, for suppression, for failure to deliver, failure of leadership and perhaps see whether crimes were committed. It's about time INEC is held responsible and accountable. That's one of sure ways to get them do what they are given money for and supposed to do. So there should not be anything like US standard, UK standard, EU standard or Nigerian standard. It's just unacceptable by any standards. *Conclusion* I'm really very excited to perform my civic duty by voting in this election. And I hope my votes will count. Bonaventure Ezekwenna B. A. *How Could Buhari and His Men Fail So Woefully?* *Still Waiting for Buhari's War on Corruption* Wednesday, February 20, 2019 *Abuja, Nigeria:* I have been an activist on quite a few social causes, but I confined most of my activism in United States. However, as I observe deterioration of situation of things in Nigeria, last year 2018, I decided to prepare to take my activism to next level. First, I decided to travel to Nigeria to do voter registration. And last week, I arrived Nigeria to exercise my voting rights by participating in the national decision on who should lead this country. I have believed Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari's purported anti-corruption, strict disciplinary and highly principled credentials so much that I sponsored and organized an event in Empire State Building New York in about 2006 and invited him as the Guest Speaker. The reason I chose him as the Guest Speaker was to offer him a platform to speak to Nigerians in US and international community about his vision and mission on how to make Nigeria better. He did not attend but he sent representatives who read his prepared presentation. That was about the time I sponsored and organized an event at the same venue for launching of *Sahara Reporters*. Yes, you read me right: I financed event at the same venue for *launching of Sahara Reporters* in 2006 upon request of Sowele Omoyele. During the 2015 presidential and national elections, I traveled to Nigeria but could not vote due to voter registration issue. If I had voted in that election, I have no doubt I would have voted for Major Gen. Buhari because of my belief then in his purported anti-corruption, strict disciplinary and highly principled credentials. After Presidents Mathews Aremu Okikiola Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Eberechukwu Azikiwe Jonathan alleged monumental frauds and corrupt regimes and attempted attendant social crisis and economic stagnation at that time, I joined many in calling for democratic change in direction and leadership of Nigeria. Buhari's victory at the polls was a big relief and the world, especially the global superpowers, one after another rolled out red-carpets while welcoming him and his entourage in their various capitals. President Buhari enjoyed universal global goodwill more than any Nigerian president in modern times. I remember meeting a man in Abuja who was introduced to me as President Buhari's nephew Alhaji Rabiu (Quantity Surveyor). That was during Buhari's first official visit to US after his swearing-in. While we were watching a live television broadcast showing the visit, slim Rabiu said in a very thick accent, "Look at how America is receiving Baba, Baba is a great man, everybody loves Baba everywhere he goes, sai baba. Watch, Baba will bring peace in Nigeria, Baba will bring developments and prosperity everywhere in Nigeria", etc. But, first sign of trouble was when President Buhari could not be able to fill/form his cabinet promptly on timely fashion. After several months and when he eventually did, they were made up of mostly incompetent politicians with lots of embezzlement and corruption questions hanging around them. Some of them were former governors that allegedly robbed their state treasury silly and used some of the money to support his election. Also, President Buhari made himself Minister of Petroleum Resources, the country's financial lifeline. Nigerians allover and the world as a whole were expecting President Buhari to declare total war against corruption and indiscipline. But that never happened. Rather, news coming out of Nigeria were discovery of hundreds of millions of dollars in toilet pitholes and suckaways, cemeteries, unoccupied apartments, unoccupied 2-storey buildings filled with money, etc. Mass decamping of past government officials facing corruption and embezzlement charges from their various political parties to President Buhari's party and slowing down of law enforcement actions on their cases. There were also news reports about gross corruption in the armed forces resulting in very sad loss of our gallant soldiers in very suspicious circumstances. After the world was told that Boko Haram had been defeated, we continued to loose gallant soldiers and sometimes some whole military barracks in Boko Haram offensives. These were kind of losses and humiliations Nigerian soldiers never had before. It's either President Buhari has not declared his much promised war against corruption and indiscipline, or his Minister of Information is not reporting it, or perhaps, the news outfits are not reporting it. Either of the 3. While youths of various tribes in Nigeria were protesting lack of jobs due to under-development, caused by corruption of past and present government officials, rather than listen to these youths' cry for help, President Buhari sent men and youths of the Nigerian military to kill and maim the protesting jobless kids and youths. The slaughter of Nigerian jobless kids, the jobless youths, youths who were ready to work but had (have) no jobs because politicians and government officials looted the funds meant for development and growth touched some of us the most. President Buhari will rather protect alleged corrupt politicians who decamped to his party than protect Nigerian protesting jobless youths. This is incredible! Nigerian politicians and government officials love to quote and compare with US and UK. But no US or UK politician or government official will order the military to kill their own protesting jobless kids and youths. And should any irresponsible leader gives such order, no US or UK soldier will obey such unlawful order. How do I know? Because I learnt such from Fort-Sill School of Infantry and Artillery, Oklahoma during Basic Military Training and Advanced Military Training. One of the key lessons of UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice), is the responsibility of a soldier to disobey any unlawful order given by military superior or civilian authority. Nigeria's latest show of shame is this current mismanagement of presidential and national election scheduled for February 16, 2019. I take my desire and decision to travel to Nigeria from United States to vote in this election in Nigeria as, not just exercise of my rights as a citizen of Nigeria, but as a call to duty, a higher call to service. But the election was suspiciously postponed at passed 11th hour, despite huge amount of money requested by the nation's election agency and fully granted. That postponement is colossal national disgrace that may perhaps warrant corruption and treason investigations by a responsible government to get to the bottom of it and to hold all those responsible accountable. Prior to the passed 11th hour postponement, there were news-reported suspicious cases of fire incidence at election storage offices guarded by security personnel. It's unknown how many people have been arrested on any of those fire incidents. And if no one was arrested, the security agencies up to highest levels manning those sites need thorough investigations. I have been watching various television programs and listening to various explanations of INEC officials regarding their reasons for the postponement. None makes any atom of sense. *Example:* A man (CPS or CSP to INEC Chairman) was interviewed yesterday morning, Monday, February 18, 2019 on Channel Television, and one of the reasons he gave for the postponement was : "Nigeria is a huge country and there are places they could not reach to distribute election materials because of bad terrains and bad roads". My response to such senseless excuse was: "Because Nigeria is such a huge country is the reason your agency was given such a whopping huge amount of money running to Hundreds of Billions of Naira to implement the assignment. And if the terrains and roads are so rough/bad for cars, vans, and trucks, then rent/hire/lease bulldozers, payloaders (Caterpillar, John Dere, etc, helicopters, Nigerian Army, Airforce and Navy for super-heavy equipments). This latest mismanagement of election is not only voter frustration and suppression, it could constitute threat to national security. News reports indicate Nigeria stock is falling since the postponement, investors are jittery and Nigerians are living in fear. Buhari may still get my vote. Something is telling me he is still the anti-corruption and anti-indiscipline guy. But he has 3 days to proof that. All my options remain open at this time, and until I enter the polling booth to cast my vote. And despite the demoralizing and frustrating effect and heavy financial tolls this postponement of presidential and national elections have caused me, my determination to exercise my right to vote in these elections remains unshaken.
