Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has approved the appointment of Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi of the Giesi ruling house as the 51st Ooni of Ile-Ife, barely three months after the death of Oba Okunade Sijuwade. Aregbesola in a statement signed October 24, 2015, said that the kingmakers of Ife had completed the required process and communicated the choice of Prince Ogunwusi to his office for approval. Ogunwusi takes over from Oba Sijuade, who died on July 28, 2015, in a London hospital.

No fewer than 300 pupils of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State, have been hospitalised due to an outbreak of an unknown disease. Signs of the outbreak of the disease started manifesting on October 10, when some pupils were said to have started vomiting and stooling, creating fears of a cholera outbreak. But the state government through the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olurotimi Ojo, has come out to dismiss it as “diarrhoea” while medical investigation has begun. Parents and guardians are now trooping to the school to check if their children and wards are among the victims. The Principal of the school, Mrs Grace Ogunyomi, was said to have reported the case to the state government on Wednesday for prompt action. It was learnt that the school authorities had been taking the patients to Efon General Hospital in batches since the epidemic started. It was gathered that Governor Ayodele Fayose had ordered the commissioner to mobilise health care workers to the school to arrest the situation. Of the about 300 pupils said to be infected, only 31 of them were still receiving treatment while others had been treated and discharged, a source revealed on Thursday. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner, confirmed that only 20 of the infected pupils were still in the hospital, adding that the ministry had brought in environmental health officials. “We have alerted the water corporation to chlorinate their water. They have about six boreholes and we have got them chlorinated, because we knew as professionals that the water could be a source. “We are trying to look into their environment, so that we can get where such could have broken out. We want to know how they dump their faeces and how they discharge their sewages,” she added. |

The Senate has agreed to the decision of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to review downward the salaries and allowances of federal lawmakers at the National Assembly by 50 per cent. This was disclosed yesterday by Senator Umaru Ibrahim Kurfi ( APC Katsina Central) during a chat with senate correspondents. The Senate had recently rejected the pay cut in their salaries and allowances by suspending consideration of the report of its Finance Committee following sharp disagreements among senior lawmakers over recommendation by the committee. But Senator Kurfi said the upper chamber of the National Assembly had agreed to the 50 per cent pay cut in line with the policy of President Muhammadu Buhari administration to ensure prudence in public spending and restore dignity to governance in the country. “The Eighth Senate is doing its best to ensure the success of the present administration. In line with policy of President Muhammadu Buhari to eradicate corruption in all sectors of the economy, we (senators) have already agreed to implement 50 per cent salary cut. “We are in a change regime and we are ready to key into the zero tolerance for corruption policy of the present administration. Similarly, we have agreed to support all other policies and programmes being embarked upon for the benefit of Nigerians”, Kurfi said The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain assured that the Senate would continue to help the executive arm to build on democracy, implement the change promised Nigerians by the party and ensure that President Buhari surpass the records of his predecessors. e allayed the fears of some Nigerians that the APC-led federal government would not spread the dividends of democracy across Nigeria, saying the President as a man of integrity would ensure even development of the country. On the crisis in APC since the party came to power, he said the leadership has not been leaving any stone unturned in keeping the party as one despite “misunderstanding among some leaders over certain issues”. “We are trying hard to ensure that things take shape in the party. We are not divided, what we have is just misunderstanding among some leaders. Misunderstanding is bound to take place in any large party like the APC and this will be settled”, he assured. Senator Kurfi expressed hope that democracy would thrive with more development in the country under President Buhari, saying “he is an honest, transparent and Godfearing leader that will make things work again in Nigeria”. He therefore urged Nigerians, irrespective of tribe, religion and political party affiliation to rally round the number one citizen to succeed for the benefit of all. https://today.ng/news/21982/sen… |
